After a week of tumultuous upsets in college football the Shortlist to South Beach stands at a mere 13 lucky teams still left, ranked by order of worthiness for one of the two top spots as follows;
Notre Dame, Kansas State, Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State, Louisville, Georgia, Florida, LSU, FSU, Oregon State, Clemson and Mississippi State.
Not a single team won a game last week that I called for them to lose and be eliminated from Shortlist contention in 2012, not even the double digit favorite Sooners who gave a perfect illustration between the difference of the top two teams on the Shortlist this week in their marque match-up loss.
Three teams this week find themselves removed from the Shortlist thanks to unpredicted losses stemming respectively from poor coaching, looking ahead, and costly mental lapses from the most important position on the field;
1) Southern Cal gets their overpaid reverse nepotism coaching connection laid bare for the charade it really is as they fall to Arizona in Tucson 39-36. Apparently the media just voted them first in the preseason for the press junkets because it certainly wasn't for their strength of schedule or talent of their quarterback who was bested by an old high school rival he used to own at the last level of football he was any good at. Well, at least there's always next week for this perennial overrated program to try and save some face, or have it disfigured completely, by beating the historical conference giant coming to visit.
2) Rutgers ruins homecoming in New Jersey by losing to an under the radar Kent State team 35-23. In a flash Kyle Flood's great coaching start comes rushing back to reality as the Scarlet Knights now go into November for a stretch run with only a weakened Big East championship to play for. Even Greg Schiano's historically bad, but improving, Rutgers squads didn't end up on the short end of the final score against Kent State, as a reference point, so how his replacement refocuses this team will determine if they can climb to the next level of success despite this big setback.
3) Ohio closes the Shortlist this year on the non-auto-qualifying BCS conferences as they let a chance at forcing overtime in Miami or Ohio slip away due to a mental error on behalf of the quarterback for a 23-20 loss. Whether this becomes the enduring memory of signal caller Tyler Tettleton's college career remains to be seen but forgetting the lack of any number of timeouts remaining while you take a sack in the red-zone with only enough time on the clock to run one play for the win and another for the tie to force overtime to ruin an undefeated season is something most will never forget regardless of how the rest of his starts play out in Athens.
I predict a single team will be eliminated from the Shortlist this week, no matter how much cowbell they bring to face the Aggies;
Mississippi State.
Enjoy the games this week and join me back here next week as what transpires in November will be recalled for all time here on the Shortlist to South Beach!

Native, sounds like a PLAN! Just add, 'lands on D'No's head, knocking him out and forcing Barrow to call the plays from upstairs resulting in noticeably improved situational defensive deployment,' and we're all set
Now, where did I leave my packed chute lying around after trick or treating last night?

The margin of victory is as irrelevant as candidates for political office. Just win, baby. At all costs.
A win probably puts us alone in first (as Duke plays Clemson).
Just win. We need something. Anything. Win. Win. Win.
Win ugly, win beautiful. Just win.

Papa Cane - FSU continues its attack on UM verbal recruits and offers TE Jeremy Kerr, who committed to Miami several months ago. Don't see him flipping.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | November 01, 2012 at 08:57 AM
Papa - FSU "insiders" will tell you that they pushed DL Keith Bryant away and that's why he committed to UM. False. Always a Cane. 100% solid. #BS

A win tonight puts the Canes in the driver's seat, and the Golden plan is still on track, despite the naysayers.
I will say it again - this is could be the biggest game of Al Golden's tenure. A lot is riding on this game. A win on national TV will put the Canes ahead of its rebuilding schedule, help in recruiting battles and build confidence and momentum into the final 3 weeks and the beginning of next season. A loss would bring the slow the momentum and also mean a longer rebuilding process.
If Golden and the Canes win this game, take sole possession of the Coastal, win the last 3 winnable games (finish 8-4), make the ACC-CG and maybe creep into the top 25 -- Golden will silence his critics and naysayers for a long, long time.

This is Golden's biggest game, am sorry to say if he loses this game, i think he is heading down the Shannon road. Shannon could never win a game to truly mattered even though he was 2-2 v FSU....So far Golden is 0-3 v FSU and VT and this game matters the most. VT is not a great team, they have not won one single game away from home this season. There are no excuses, week 10 coming off a bye at home against your second biggest rival with everything to play for. Lets see what they are going to do, Quite intrigued. Personally i expect nothing would hope if they surprise me.

Miami Hurricanes vs. Virginia Tech Hokies – By The Numbers
5 – Sacks compiled by the Virginia Tech defense in each of its last two games.
6 – Consecutive road games lost by the Hokies, matching the longest such losing streak for the program since the 1991 season.
9 – Number of quarters (out of 32) this season that Miami has led in time of possession.
9.6 – Average number of games won by Virginia Tech in the last 19 seasons, all of which have ended in bowl appearances.
29 – Times the Hurricanes and the Hokies have met in the past; Miami holds a 17-12 advantage, while Virginia Tech has won the last three meetings.
31 – of 47 tackles by Canes linebacker Denzel Perryman’s that have come in the last three games, including a season-high 12 stops against Florida State.
56 – Seconds remaining in the last head-to-head match-up when Tech quarterback Logan Thomas ran for a touchdown, clinching a 38-35 win.
82.8 – Percentage of red zone opportunities the Hurricanes offense has converted through its first eight games.
179 – Completions by Miami quarterback Stephen Morris through eight games, which leads the Atlantic Coast Conference. Morris also leads the conference in passing attempts (311) and passing yards (2,219), and is second in yards per game with 277.4.
225 – Consecutive games in which Virginia Tech has scored, beginning with a win over Miami in 1995.

What up Zilla, I see you slept a lil too late this morning lol. Man I'm tryna stay clear from them Memphis folks, they goin too hard but it ain't much better in Da Ville neither tho. Its a shoot out on my street every other day, outside folks wouldn't understand they think its all country music down here lol. But you know that I know that you know lol.
I know a couple of years ago Memphis had the #1 murder rate in the country and Cashville was #4, I don't know it has changed or not.

I'm a Memphis native..it is one of the most dangerous cities in the country. If you visit, there are a lot of cool things. BUT do not wonder and get adventurous..you will come up short. Memphis is a major drug hub so a lot of turf and senseless violence. Much like Miami is not South Beach-Elvis is not Memphis.

Hoping these Canes pick it up tonight man and put in some serious work we need this game man, this is a big game for us.

I'd say Collins goes to UM by depth chart alone. It will be difficult to play anywhere at FSU... they're three deep at pretty much every position.
UM? We can use everything and everyone. Come on down.

Examining coaching stability thru RobertMarve: 48 assts recruited him. Only 2 are still at same college:
I think this speaks to the instability of coaching and also how important getting a good QB is. Marve has been in CFB since the Bush administration. Remember how Shannon hitched his wagon to Jacory and look where that got him.

Zilla...I'm at The Hampton waiting for OGV to show up so we can ride together to the Fort Lauderdale Airport. I'm dropping him off for the parachute drop into the stadium tonight while holding the UM flag, a purple chicken and a keg of beer.
He first planned to land on D'No's head but then decided against that and instead is aiming for the UM student section. He feels that if he can land safely with a keg there that they will never let security get to him to kick him out.
I aksed him where he got the purple chicken and how he was gonna carry a KEG of beer while parachuting in and all he would say was: "I GOT THIS!"
Posted by: SOUP | November 01, 2012 at 02:47 PM
We should arrive at Row E5 Green Lot around 3:30. White Isuzu Rodeo next to a green p/u truck nearer to the stadium than the actual E5 sign in the center of the row.

If there was ever a MUST win then this MUST be it. Go Canes, beat VT! I agree with the 21 point win tonight so I have revised my score to: UM 41, VT 20.
And no, I have not started drinking...yet!
Posted by: SOUP | November 01, 2012 at 02:52 PM
Canes - 47
VT - 34

Change in plans...OGV could notfind his parachute so instead will repel in from a helicopter hovering over the field.
We are off, be there at 4 PM.

I think the defense will take another step forward tonight and surprise some people, mainly OGV
