After a week of tumultuous upsets in college football the Shortlist to South Beach stands at a mere 13 lucky teams still left, ranked by order of worthiness for one of the two top spots as follows;
Notre Dame, Kansas State, Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State, Louisville, Georgia, Florida, LSU, FSU, Oregon State, Clemson and Mississippi State.
Not a single team won a game last week that I called for them to lose and be eliminated from Shortlist contention in 2012, not even the double digit favorite Sooners who gave a perfect illustration between the difference of the top two teams on the Shortlist this week in their marque match-up loss.
Three teams this week find themselves removed from the Shortlist thanks to unpredicted losses stemming respectively from poor coaching, looking ahead, and costly mental lapses from the most important position on the field;
1) Southern Cal gets their overpaid reverse nepotism coaching connection laid bare for the charade it really is as they fall to Arizona in Tucson 39-36. Apparently the media just voted them first in the preseason for the press junkets because it certainly wasn't for their strength of schedule or talent of their quarterback who was bested by an old high school rival he used to own at the last level of football he was any good at. Well, at least there's always next week for this perennial overrated program to try and save some face, or have it disfigured completely, by beating the historical conference giant coming to visit.
2) Rutgers ruins homecoming in New Jersey by losing to an under the radar Kent State team 35-23. In a flash Kyle Flood's great coaching start comes rushing back to reality as the Scarlet Knights now go into November for a stretch run with only a weakened Big East championship to play for. Even Greg Schiano's historically bad, but improving, Rutgers squads didn't end up on the short end of the final score against Kent State, as a reference point, so how his replacement refocuses this team will determine if they can climb to the next level of success despite this big setback.
3) Ohio closes the Shortlist this year on the non-auto-qualifying BCS conferences as they let a chance at forcing overtime in Miami or Ohio slip away due to a mental error on behalf of the quarterback for a 23-20 loss. Whether this becomes the enduring memory of signal caller Tyler Tettleton's college career remains to be seen but forgetting the lack of any number of timeouts remaining while you take a sack in the red-zone with only enough time on the clock to run one play for the win and another for the tie to force overtime to ruin an undefeated season is something most will never forget regardless of how the rest of his starts play out in Athens.
I predict a single team will be eliminated from the Shortlist this week, no matter how much cowbell they bring to face the Aggies;
Mississippi State.
Enjoy the games this week and join me back here next week as what transpires in November will be recalled for all time here on the Shortlist to South Beach!

Al is going to find out just what a matchup of two five hundred teams draws in a pro city tonight, even with first place in the worst division in college football in the line.

Here's the keys from the Herb for tonights tilt vs the Roosters.
1.Hold dem scrubs to under 150 yds rushing. Hey that would be a milestone for us.
2.Have to get up in Thomas's grill and don't let him sit back & sign autographs before he has to throw. Got them orders De-Line.
3.We have to be able to run the ball. Another 29 yd. effort and we get beat!
4.Don't play stupid football. (Penalties, 5 or less).
5.Win the T.O. battle. (Remember Tech thrives off your mistakes).
6.Don't get out coached.
7.Follow my simple words and the Herb sees it, 28-24.

this game will determine what kind of coaches we have. When you have these many days to prepare, there is no excuse.
If we lose, it will be soley on the coaches and perhaps we need to start looking elsewhere. Yes, I have had a few captn-n-cokes already but still.....

That was unexcusable
Posted by: Raizecane | November 01, 2012 at 08:28 PM
I am sorry but to let a QB go 73 yards is pathetic. The saftey looked outside, never turned and looked at the guy getting the ball. Some of this D is scheme, yes, but these kids had terrible HS coaches. They are unaware of what a team is doing, and by in large cannot tackle. A coach in college should not have to teach people to be alert, think and how to tackle. We are small, we do not attack the offense, we get caught out of place and we do not tackle. That cannot happen. JMO
Duke sure came to play though!!!!
Posted by: VA Cane | November 01, 2012 at 08:31 PM
OGV get your tail down there, put on the headset and get that D straight!!!!
Posted by: VA Cane | November 01, 2012 at 08:32 PM
Duke Johnson is a true playmaker when he is healthy
Posted by: BigWindyCane | November 01, 2012 at 08:36 PM
No D's play call was bad. Then Denzel and the safety followed it up with bad reads. This late in the season it's just sad.
Posted by: Texcane | November 01, 2012 at 08:37 PM
Phone will die soon, good luck to us all tonight, we need it, OFF signing off from section 444!
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | November 01, 2012 at 08:37 PM
Look at Duke having to coach up older players. Why is this not already done?
Posted by: Texcane | November 01, 2012 at 08:42 PM
Even the commentators questioned the defensive call on the draw.
Please please please Miami hurricanes fans do not attempt to find an outlet to avoid crediting the horrible call made by D'omino////
His call left no one to cover the middle of the field. It wasn't unfortunate or a mistake by the players. It was bad coaching simple and plain.
Their offense is SEVERELY inept
Run Blitz the hell out of them!
Vaughn Telemaque is ten times better than Highsmith or Rodgers, so be careful what you ask for. They will nt make a play and Telemaque is inconsistent (he will make plays occasionally).
Telemaque is only effective in an attacking/aggressive scheme, thats part of why his play has declined.
These coordinators are a piece of work. Fisch in the red zone one vie!

Dorsett has dropped a lot of passes, and then he fields that punt....this is what I am talking about...what are you thinking...never mind....you are not thinking. I have an undefeated teen team, and am helping DBs on an undefeated HS team....both think more and tackle better. This is why we struggle so much....we do not think and we do not execute the fundamentals on a regular basis. You do not teach people to tackle or think in college.
We have done some good things so far, if we would think more, and execute more, combined with hard work and enthusiasm and the teamwork I see in place.....we would be a really good team.
Posted by: VA Cane | November 01, 2012 at 08:46 PM
TE sighting
Rashawn Scott with NFL hands and moves
Easy TD if Dallas keeps it or runs it. Wow just wow!!!
Good play call although we have abandoned the run.
Posted by: Zakkee | November 01, 2012 at 08:47 PM
We win tonight.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | November 01, 2012 at 08:49 PM
Yes we were in a poor set, but you have to look at VT....no big run guy, short yardage, a QB who is big and likes to run....damn he gets the ball every play....at least take a look....and after he gets going....did anybody really bust their tail to catch him....not really. Thats a bust all around, but man you got to know down and distance....I am at saftey....hell I look at the guy with the ball at least. JMO
Posted by: VA Cane | November 01, 2012 at 08:49 PM
Up by 9 points ... nice job.. just worried that our d will not give us a chance to win...I hope they prove me wrong
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | November 01, 2012 at 08:50 PM
Keep working hard....we got to get that ST fired up as well....too many yards on KO!!
Posted by: VA Cane | November 01, 2012 at 08:51 PM
oh 11 points
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | November 01, 2012 at 08:51 PM
We still give up too much space to the WRs.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | November 01, 2012 at 08:54 PM
So what is the problem with the canes VA Canes?
You credit yourself for being a successful coach (your coaching helps your kid's succeed) but when you relate it to our games, you don't mention the coaching, just that the players aren't executing. I'm confused.
You accept your impact on kid's performance, but excuse our coaches impact on the kid's performance.
Posted by: Zakkee | November 01, 2012 at 08:54 PM
Dallas with a bad read. I'm not even mad at him though bc there are basic mental errors all over the place
Posted by: Texcane | November 01, 2012 at 08:55 PM
Losing safeties left and right. Deon looks mad about it.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | November 01, 2012 at 08:56 PM
its no surprise that Logan Thomas is gonna do most of the ball movement... why arent we keying on this guy?
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | November 01, 2012 at 08:56 PM
So we are down to telemaque? Awww shit!
Posted by: panamacitycane | November 01, 2012 at 08:56 PM
I gues u can't hit a running back??
Posted by: Jack | November 01, 2012 at 08:56 PM

Logan thomas on a roll out ...its obvious
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | November 01, 2012 at 09:00 PM
We are gonna win this game and its gonna mask this horrible defensive game plan and lack of adjustment by D'omino////
This is sad football
V tECH is horrible.
