Dear University of Miami Alumni,
The statement below has been sent out to the media—we held our statement as a professional courtesy to the University of Nebraska which sent out their announcement at 12 pm CST.
CoralGables, FL – University of Miami President Donna Shalala announces the resignation of Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst effective immediately.
"I am deeply disappointed in Shawn's departure to the University of Nebraska as I thoroughly enjoyed working with him. We wish Shawn and his wonderful family the very best at their new post."
President Shalala has appointed Blake James, Senior Associate Athletic Director, as the Acting Director of Athletics. James served as the Director of Athletics at the University of Maine from 2005-2010 and returned to the University of Miami in 2010, having previously worked at UM from 1995-1997 and from 1998-2001.
The University of Miami Family will be traveling to Chicago this weekend to support the Hurricanes in the Miami-Notre Dame rivalry. The UM Alumni Association and Athletics are very excited about the turnout of fans and look forward to seeing fellow 'Canes in Chicago.

What's up with being AD at The U?
Is it THAT tough a gig?
C'mon, who's vetting these people?
We need some continuity in our athletic program already!

Must not pay enough to stick around. DS is on the cheap side, we have underachieved during Clappy and Onionheads tenures in what is supposed to be our best sport, the base is small, the success is minimal, we are fairly irrelevant in the scope of college athletics.....would you want the job? Nebraska is a football school, been one for a long time....not that good now....but try to tell their base that. They continue to sell out game after game, they pack it, they sell millions in attire. They had a huge contigent of people at the VT game...a distant away game....damn near what we draw at home....way more than we have at VT....I bet the AD job at UM pays $300k tops....would you triple your income...For sure...JMO

University of Maine? do they play sports? bear wrestling? tree climbing? streaking through the woods? moose calling? snake racing? hand fishing? I hope this is a temp fix to a long term problem....I think you can have academics and sports succeed if you work at it. AG was a great hire...time for the pres to spend some $ on a real AD....Holcutt and Eichorst were band aids...get a real AD.... a pretty resume is one thing, substance is another...JMO

They need to get someone that is very familiar and comfortable with Miami, stop getting these dudes from out in the midwest and get someone from the southeast and more importantly someone who has some connection with Miami. What the hell. the next thing miami needs to do, they need to build a stronger connection with the entire South Florida, from palm beach to dade. There is no big alumni base there they need to be a community team. One thing i was thinking about, the mediocre attendance we seen recently...it wasn't like that ever under Shannon i can't remember..why is that?

What about Tony Hernandez.
Posted by: Tsully76 | October 04, 2012 at 08:09 PM
NO, he does not have the communication skills. He is not the "face" of UM athletics. He is a good company man and steady as they come but not a front man. He is an operations specialist, not a PR guy.

I want Feliciano's mom.
Posted by: 4-Real | October 04, 2012 at 08:21 PM
Highsmith is still a little "raw". Moss is a complete professional, a finished product. Sharp as they come.

I want Feliciano's mom.
Posted by: 4-Real | October 04, 2012 at 08:21 PM
I hear she is as thick as cold grits.
Don't know if that qualifies her to be AD?
Posted by: 86Cane | October 04, 2012 at 08:23 PM
Great stuff 86.
Posted by: Tsully76 | October 04, 2012 at 08:25 PM
Winston Moss + Al Golden = SUCCESS!
Plus Moss would be a LIFER if he wants to go the AD route VS the coaching route?
Coaches make more $$$.

Did that ND dweeb just call us out to fight or was he referring to the players fighting each other? Either way that vid was hilarious...I'm dying laughin!
If I see him..I'm smacking fire out of him lol!
They're LBs are going to be in the box keyed on the run and their Safeties are gonna be back deep for the bomb to Dorsett (they fear Dorsett and are game planning for him), what they can't prepare for is the fact that Dorsett runs at the speed in the 1st and 4th quarters lol! The middle of the field will be open sesame all day.
Our conditioning must show through
No more than 1 turnover
Win the battle up front on at least one side of the ball--i have a feeling that our OL will get handled for 3 quarters, but UTough the 4th!
If history is any indication of whats going to happen Saturday then we know the unexpected will occur.
The Miami defense will be the surprise of this game folks, but the offense will struggle.
We win this game on 3:
1) superior conditioning
2) special teams
3) Stephen Morris' come back spirit (he loves being down so much that he'll subconscious set the comeback scenario up with his slumber-like psychosis in the 3rd and 4th quarters).
He is gonna light up the 4th quarter. If the WRs run hard thru every route, are loose and aren't cold (mentally).

86 I like your pick of Winston Moss. Jimmy J. Likes his current setup to much. 4-real Ms. Feliciano is as thick as Heinz you should try to holla at her. Great lady.

AD is a position for all UM sports..What does Jimmy Johnson know about UM tennis? :-)
But we do need someone from sofla. One with connections to big donors. We also need to stop filling ourselves with this pro stadium. I live 15 mins from it and would love to go back to my orange bowl. "If you build it that will come" meaning our own stadium and a decent program which Golden is doing...if he leaves forget about it...we may as well go back to the Big East

Dwayne Johnson....
- He can multitask - wrestling and acting
- He doesn't need a large salary.
- He's already U Tough.
- He loves the U
- And he would lay the smack down to other conferences and ADs, tell a penny pinching administration to know its role, shut its mouth, and build UM a football stadium, if you smell what the Rock is cooking.

Cocane, nobody likes a sore winner! :(

I am just going to repeat what I said last night and apply it with respect to the AD position.
Experience matters. It matters in life when you do your job. It matters in love when you make mistakes before you find your loved one. It matters in how you manage your money. You wouldn't hire a money manager who is fresh out of college to manage your money. It is too important to take the chance.
I'll double down and say with respect to the AD position, there is no way you hire a former player or coach who doesn't have a successful business background, and someone you believe can fund raise for the position.
Miami hired Eichorst because he had some experience and was recommended by Barry Alvarez. He lied well enough to get the job. I question, like everyone else, how someone who was invisible, was even doing the job. I think the proverbial don't let the door hit you on the way out was Miami's response to the resignation.
The problem at Miami has always been finding the replacement. Every time an AD or Coach leaves, there is acrimony by the boosters. Butch leaves, he is banned for life even though he might have been the ideal candidate to rehire before Golden. Fern Labati leaves, we got to punish her. Kehoe leaves, he was a bad guy. And so on. They never think about needing the former successful player or coach to be the AD one day.
None of those deserve to be AD without experience of course. But why hasn't Miami DEVELOPED an AD in waiting over thirty years. Why do we have to look to Wisconsin and not develop someone through the years within. Oh wait, we did, Pete Garcia, but he left for FIU, so he is FOREVER banned.
Does that make any sense? No, but it is what happens when boosters carry a grudge and don't look at things objectively. And by the way, when I look at the FIU stadium at tropical park, which could have been ours all along if we ever asked Dade County to do it, I see a home field advantage.
I don't see a home field advantage at JRS. You get what you deserve in life. Our boosters have given us this and the team deserves better. Whoever gets the AD job needs to listen less to the noise and take this program to a path that is sustainable for the future.

Who's the next big name to leave the U?
Yep, Al Golden. FEAR THE TIE
If he receives national attention for having done a good job at Miami (under notoriously Tough U conditions) AND
The NCAA comes down hard on the Canes AND
Some other school offers him a big, fat raise AND
He finally realizes that empty stadiums and lack of resources make the U2Tough . . .
Then he's out of here in a flash!
Al Golden? In truth . . . We Hardly Know U
