Email from acting UM Athletic Director Blake James:
Moments ago, I met with our football team, coaches and staff to inform them that the University of Miami will not be accepting a bowl invitation at the conclusion of the season. This unprecedented step of voluntarily withholding our team from a second consecutive postseason came after considerable deliberation and discussion with University leadership, including President Shalala, the Office of the General Counsel and Department of Athletics leaders.
LINK: Miami to Forgo Bowl Game for Second Season
While this is a difficult day for many in our family, I am confident that it will allow our football program and the University to move forward in the most expedited manner possible. I can assure you that the University and Athletic Department are doing everything in our powers to bring the inquiry to a conclusion and I am confident that we will emerge stronger than ever before.
Much of that strength comes from the continued support and partnership of people like you. Thank you for standing with the University of Miami and we look forward to many more successful years together.
Sincerely,
Blake James
Interim Director of Athletics
The Miami Hurricanes’ regular-season finale Nov. 24 at Duke will be televised live at 12:30 p.m. ET on the ACC Network, the Atlantic Coast Conference office announced Sunday.
Miami (6-5, 4-3 ACC) is currently tied for second in the ACC Coastal Division, one-half game behind division leader Georgia Tech (6-5, 5-3 ACC). The Hurricanes closed out their home schedule Saturday with a convincing 40-9 rout of USF on Senior Day at Sun Life Stadium. Junior QB Stephen Morris threw for 413 yards and 3 TD, while three Canes receivers tallied 100-yard games – Phillip Dorsett (12 rec., 111 yds), Herb Waters (4 rec., 130 yds) and Clive Walford (3 rec., 135 yds).

Miami Head Coach Al Golden
On his team’s win… We knew they were going to bring a lot of energy - the game means a lot to both teams. I was nervous with them coming off a bye week. We did whatever we could to get them fresh this week. We didn’t go in pads very much, and the kids responded today. I was very pleased with the effort, and obviously the amount of kids that stepped up - most particularly at wideout, to answer the call, because we had some injures at that spot.
On the performance of the wide receivers… Obviously we really believe Herb [Waters] is going to be a really good player for us. Philip [Dorsett] grew up tonight. I was so proud of Kendal [Thompkins], the plays he made, the blocks he made, the unselfishness he showed out there - he really deserved to go out that way. I’m very happy for Kendal.
On the performance of Clive Walford… Our biggest thing with Clive, and what we keep saying to him, is we have to keep pushing you to five, six, seven catches a game. He has that ability. If he didn’t have that in his talent zone, we wouldn’t push him. We have to get him out of his comfort zone and into his talent zone. We think he’s a six-, seven-, eight-catch [guy], he’s in that range. We haven’t got there yet with him. He’s getting better. Sometimes you look out there and you forget he doesn’t have a long lineage in the game. He’s a sophomore. I’m pleased with the direction he’s going and how he’s working.

pbcfr...WVU has NO CHANCE at joining the ACC with their academics. They are HORRIBLE! Louisville isn't far behind.

More from Al Golden post USF:
On being bowl eligible…It’s nice. Obviously we lost by five points to the two ACC Coastal teams, which is disappointing. We’ve had a tough road to get to this point. I just stay focused on moving the team forward. When I look out there and see Herb Waters doing what he did today, and some of the other guys respond the way they did, the young guys, it’s really exciting for the future.

So Maryland will pay the 50 Million buyout to move to a league that alsmost wasn't last year? There is a reason Nebraska left...

OOPS.....Big 10, Not Big 12.....excuse Nebraska comment.

"pbcfr...WVU has NO CHANCE at joining the ACC with their academics. They are HORRIBLE! Louisville isn't far behind."
WVU's law school went from almost a tier 1 to possibly a tier 4 a few years back. The decision to shut down the law school on a Thursday and Friday for a Saturday game is one of many. There is no chance they would even sniff the ACC from an academic standpoint. They're on FSU levels when it comes to grades, and I'm being nice.
From a football standpoint, it would be excellent. WVU/Va. Tech was a pretty nasty rivalry. WVU is clearly in over its head from a travel standpoint in the Big 12.
Not going to happen.
UCF? Not bad. Connecticut's a descent market, too.

JW....bro you wont be saying this if next year we have 2-3 losses and were playing and have a real chance to win the ACC and go to a BCS bowl.....as well as in 2014 if they give us one more.

Best decision made since firing Coker!!!
Posted by: dg | November 19, 2012 at 12:08 PM
I was reading where recruits are saying they want miami to ban themselves now so they can play in bowls later, it does help with their decision. This is good for recruiting. This gives us a shot at a real title in the future. Might as well do it during a down year anyway. Look at ohio state..might be playing for a national title this year but instead they played in a garbage bowl last year and now their banned. This is a good thing. Yes it sucks not to have a chance for the first time at an acc title but who are we kidding we probably would lose to fsu again. Just being real.
Posted by: panamacitycane | November 19, 2012 at 12:31 PM
PB- don't see it happening. We are an 8-4 team next year IMO. No depth, no DL, and all of these freshmen are not necessarily going to get better next year (See Chickillo and Finnie for examples). Announcing this late, again, is poor sportsmanship- we don't like our potential bowl game, know we probably will get killed by FSU in the ACC title game, so we're going to try to bargain our way out of trouble by giving up something we really don't want. If they really believed this was strictly an act of contrition, we would have limited scholarships for the 2012 class, and announced the same for the 2013 class.
This is like my 10-year old daughter telling me she's sorry she didn't do her homework, and as punishment she isn't going to play computer games for more than 2 hours a day. Or that she's willing to ban herself from watching an NBA game with me.

smillerdegnan #UM #Canes, per Golden, are already accounting for a reduction in scholarships & planning to sign fewer guys.

Already being done jw. The administration is NOT going to come out before the season and forfeit a bowl and risk losing the team for the season. Remember BC last year? Don't think for a minute AG didn't have a say on the bowl band either.

Al Golden knew about this yesterday but I think it's amazing thing to do. Think of the future we are trying to build here. Imposing a bowl ban again and we could just have possibly just less scholarships which im fine with. We don't want to be like OSU and be undefeated and not going bowling. But we still get to work out so here comes utough which is amazing. Go canes.

Maryland can leave the acc all they want. 50 mill to a billionaire is nothing. The founder of under Armor was making all the decisions and didnt even include the board of trustees. He is much like the founder of nike at Oregon. Arrogant and rich
Posted by: laquinton | November 19, 2012 at 12:53 PM
JW, they can't self-impose a bowl ban before they're bowl eligible.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | November 19, 2012 at 12:54 PM
The Plug played against USF. At least, I heard his name on the radio. They'll probably rotate more DL in an out than just the two deep. Otherwise, I believe the Plug is a senior and if he's not producing, then give the young-uns the experience.
So is anyone other than Seantrel likely to go for an EE (early exit) and make himself draft eligible?
Posted by: Old Skool | November 19, 2012 at 12:54 PM
J.W.
I hope your daughter had common sense enough too, to ban herself from watching boring NBA games, LOL!
You can call it poor sportsmanship or whatever, it's the most intellegent thing we've done, since we got rid of Dandy & hired BIG AL. Even if we bombed Duke, we ain't got the horses to beat FSU and then we'd have to play in some scum-bag bowl, for what, because we are worried about sportsmanship! I'm cutting cartwheels, in jubilation. I hate to say this, but getting 6 wins and taking a bowl ban, is like giving ourselves a early christmas present.
We do have depth, just not enough on defense and whomever we get this year, unless, they are some kind of super hero recruit, they won't help us much next year, except with depth, which anything has got to be better than what it is right now but with that being said, our rise begins now. We'll probably have to cough up 15 to 20 ships over 3 years, but the worst has to be over, HOPEFULLY!

Soup here's your next headline or if you want to change today's ... Ban of Bowlers
Posted by: Old Skool | November 19, 2012 at 12:56 PM
Q, with that defensive signal calling I've seen the last two years from D'No, there's no need to worry about getting 'OSU'd' next year or anytime after that. Still, might as well play this ban issue conservative so there's no lack of motivation excuses to fall back on in '13 when the defense keeps getting tore up like always and Al can finally be forced to address the root causes of the issue for once in his time at UM instead of his grab bag of peripheral quickly water losing explanations he normally relies on when one of those 'disappointing' Coastal results washes up on shore near the Gables.
Shouldn't Al be getting ready for the 'Odai six wins lifetime contract' offer today instead of answering questions about games that UM won't be playing in anyway?

"We don't like our potential bowl game"? How so?
I know I damn sure would like to see a UM/FSU rematch, regardless of what others think the outcome might be.
I'm gettin' sick of our season ending in November, I wanna see my U play some more.
Make no mistake about it, this is a freakin' mess.

Actually you can as long as its mathematically possible to get to 6 wins.

Posted by: Sinistercane | November 19, 2012 at 01:21 PM
jw...I usually agree with you but in this case I think U are totally wrong. This was the right thing to do and the right time to do it. Beat Duke and look forward to next year because it will be ebtter than this one.
Offense - Everyone is back except Mike James and all of the young WRs will be healthy and experienced.
Defense - Most if not all of the young players will be better and be more experienced and I predict that D'No will win ACC Coordinator of the Year.
That's right I said it!

Petri was after Hurt.
Palermo is who I think Sinister is refering to, took over for Coker's last year and they set a rushing yards allowed per game average record for the season.
Clint already did a good job erasing himself as a player by being a snake-bitten non-factor.

Palermo spent 15 years under head coach Barry Alvarez at the University of Wisconsin, during which time he coached four first-team All-Americans, four Big Ten Defensive Linemen of the Year, two Big Ten Defensive Players of the Year, and a pair of first-round draft selections in Wendell Bryant (2002) and Erasmus James (2005). In 2004, the entire Wisconsin starting defensive line was selected in the NFL Draft, and the Badgers won two Big 10 titles during his tenure.
Palermo served as assistant head coach during his 15 years at Wisconsin, leading the outside linebackers from 1991-95 and the defensive line from 1996-2005. Before joining the Badgers, Palermo spent one season as the head coach at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville.
Most recently on the staff at Middle Tennessee for two seasons (2010-11), Palermo's 2010 Blue Raider defensive line unit featured Jamari Lattimore, who earned Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year that season and currently plays for the Green Bay Packers.
Palermo spent two seasons at Notre Dame under head coach Lou Holtz from 1988-89, including the Fighting Irish's national championship season of 1988. While at Notre Dame, Palermo coached defensive lineman Chris Zorich, a two-time consensus All-American and the 1990 winner of Lombardi Award.
Other coaching stops for Palermo include a four-year stint as the defensive line coach at Minnesota (1984-87), service as assistant head coach, defensive line, and linebackers coach at Appalachian State from 1983-84, three years as the defensive line coach at Memphis from 1980-82, and one year as the defensive line coach at Austin Peay. He began his coaching career as an assistant at North Carolina State from 1977-78 following three years at Bainbridge High School in Georgia.
Palermo is a native of Newburgh, N.Y., and lettered at Florida State in 1972-73. A 1974 graduate of Florida State, Palermo and his wife, Donna, have a son, Jason, who coaches tight ends and special teams at Southern University, and a daughter, Jessica, who is the assistant director of championships at the Big 10 Conference.
