Sinister...I think maybe Palermo got an offer he couldn't refuse. Maybe he didn't wanna wind up sleepin with da fishes? LOL

orange 'n green in the vein

Either Petri or Palermo would coach circles around D'No, with their hands tied behind their backs and blindfolded if they so chose.

Q, first of all, this is Paterno's scheme/philosophy, yes Al honed it under Groh, but he picked it up from good riddance Joe. Second, I'm going to lay this out there right now; 9-10 wins in '13 = FAILURE in my book. If, and I mean by a nailbiter, UM loses to FSU (new QB, Dumbo might bolt, even if he stays, he proved this year he's not going to ever win a title there so it's time to take the initiative back in the rivalry) and wins out the rest of the way including and ACC rematch victory and BCS win, or better it's a success. You're returning a 3000 yard passer, the best pure talent at RB this school probably has ever seen off a record freshman year and most of the worst defense they've ever fielded including all starters of consequence now going into year three of the same program, it's not time to win like he didn't his first year with a similar veteran team.

Remember, Al said don't lower the expectations, well one game over .500 after 24 months still isn't going to change that so it's put up or STFU time for MAC football schemes in the ACC. Lose to the 'turds at home and watch the seat turn white hot with a quickness, 6-win-Odai-contrat-for-life or not.

JW, they can't self-impose a bowl ban before they're bowl eligible.

Ohio- you can self-impose at any time so long as it is mathematically possible to go to one- including the pre-season.

LB

2013:

Thoughts:
- They will be strong in the secondary.
- I'm curious to see how the linebacking corps will shape up.
- Defensive line is up in the air.
- I'm happy we return the top offensive linemen.
- We're in a good place at running back.
- One good game against a Big East team does not make the tight end position. We need a dangerous motherscratcher to own the middle, and we don't have it yet.
- Stephen Morris coming back for another year is really good. His TD/INT ration was good, too. Needs to complete more passes, but many weren't his fault.
- Dropped passes killed us in many a spot.
- We need replacements for the kickers yesterday.

Well Duke did not play KSU or ND so the stats are not comparable. But I will say this:

Duke has 21 sacks and 51 TFLs and they are doing it with 1 SR, 1 JR and 4 So.

Miami has 12 sacks and 50 TFLs and they are doing it with 1 SR, 2 JRs, 2 SO and 3 FR.

Herbie, Ohio, 86, others:
I am just pissed we're going through this again. Not saying you don't have very good points, they are very worthy and I want to believe next year is finally the year things turn around. But I'm always going to choose a bird in hand over two in the bush as they say- we have the division with a win over a team we're favored to beat. We're giving this up for the hope that next year is better. There's no guarantee what the NCAA will do, including that they won't tack on a third ban just to make sure we feel their sting.

What, the 3-4?
If so, Miami hasn't lined up in anything even remotely resembling a 3-4.
This is what I remember seeing this year:

4-3 Over and Under
3-3-5 <-----I think this was their "Dime" package.
"46" in short yardage, and goal-line situations.

Now you may be right on philosophy, but the above alignments is all I remember seeing.

Didn't mean "can't" as in "not allowed". Merely stating it would look bad to impose before you're eligible.

Imagine how bad it would look if you self-impose a bowl ban, then don't win enough games to be bowl eligible in the first place?

"LB...good comment, spot on."

Where do we stand recruiting/current staff wise with replacing the kickers?

herbieibis

Hey J.W., even if they would be so kind as to give us three years, at least 2 of them would be out of the way and it shouldn't affect recruiting because most coming in will probably get R.S. We should be able to punch drunk our selves into 9 wins next year. *All starters back on defense, all starters back on Oh, except James, plus 85% of their back-ups. We'll just need a little more star power, through the draft(recruiting). These other coaches can't use negative recruiting against us, now that we have this out of the way. I can't see them giving us any more years other than what we have self-imposed.
The eternal optimist, OGV just has nothing but hate for the Golden one. I'll admit, I'm tired of waiting for the worm to turn and if it weren't for the greed and self entitlement for some of our former players, we wouldn't be in this situation to begin with. Goldie has to deal with suspensions, looming sanctions, and bowl bans since he signed on with us. Plus the talent level wasn't where it needed to be, so I'd say the hand he was dealt sucked. I'm giving the dude and his beloved DENO a pass until mid Oct. next year and as I've said before, if the results are still the same, then someones got to go.

pbcfrcane13

Btw Golden interview he stated hes already given out scholarships for this class. Makes me think that UM has a good idea about what may be coming down the pipe IMO.

Ohio, I feel you and all that, the NCAA's gonna do what they wanna do, true dat and true dat. But with all that said, and in all seriousness...PHUCK! Mark Emmert's monkey ass and His NCAA cronies!

Seriously, He basically gets His monkey ass on TV and says that Miami is "everything that's wrong with CFB"...YEAH?!...REALLY?! And just last week somebody posted an article detailing all the RAPES and ASSAULTS that went on at Washington BEFORE He got there, the rapes and assaults that players seemingly got away with, but yet, what went on at Miami is everything that's wrong with CFB...GTFOH with that BS!

Seeing what He inherited at Washington, His monkey ass should've been sympathizing with Al Golden, instead of throwing salt on the wound with that "everything that's wrong with CFB" comment.

Now I admit, we have to accept and comply with the punishment, but that doesn't mean I have to respect those SOBs at the NCAA...PHUCK EM'!

BigSonnyCane

In actuality, the last bit of players that should have been punished would have graduated in this year's class anyhow....

Therefore, it's best to get it over with now, and end this chapter now.

It's likely that our scholarship #'s will take a hit; without any additional bowl bans from the NCAA.

Yes, we had a big class last year... But, it's going to be very important for this staff to keep these guys motivated, because we can't afford to lose any depth at all.

This year's class is going to be very small, and once we here from the NCAA, the quality of players may not be of the same caliber as 2012 either.

On the contrary, I think that gives more ammo to the "immediate playing time" sales pitch, that I'm sure Al and staff will use on the recruiting trail...especially if we don't get any more bowl bans. But you're right though, it will hurt depth, but at the same time, your youngins' will get a lot of reps due to that lack of depth.

herbieibis

Another thing, with taking this bowl ban, instead of next year, the NCAA can't say, well I guess they could, that the upper classmen could transfer out, without having to sit out a year because of the ban. We don't need any mass transfers going on. We need to add not subtract.

BigSonnyCane

Posted by: CaneRock | November 19, 2012 at 04:33 PM

I understand your thiking, but "kids" want to win championships right away, as if it's that easy...

Which make it easy for some kids to buy the "other" sales pitch of playing time right away at the "Natn'l Champshp" team of last year. But "we" know darn well, they'll play nothing but special teams for 2 years.

orange 'n green in the vein

I'm glad the herb cleared the smoke out of his eyes long enough to recognize my eternal optimism since just under two years ago I told all the Golden-pun makers that they'd be waiting until 2013 for the guy to have any chance of winning big despite having a seasoned roster that a truly great coach would have whipped the under-achieving out of post haste and landed something substantial right away with ala Hoke at Michigan. If 24 months of lead-in optimism isn't eternal when the world is going to end next month, I don't know what qualifies as being so.

I won't even to mention the fact that burning Morris' red-shirt last year for all of less than 40 attempts in mop-up time basically restarted the rebuilding in 2014 with a brand new QB plus some scholarship reductions kicking in by then lagging the program down so it's truly '13 title or bust for UM now thanks to Al's shortsighted roster management on that front in a lost season last year.

Oh wait, I just did. Well, how about a weight-lifting video to make everybody feel better today UM?

Holy crap! (And you said OGV is either drunk or delusional?) LOL

I REALLY hope the NCAA gives us SOME break for our self imposed bans, but my fear is that they still have the "Thug U" mentality about us, (despite our YEARS of high academic standards & high graduation rates), and will STILL come down hard on this program because of the public misconception about our fine institution. They don't want to be seen as giving us a slap on the wrist...

I just wish they would impose their penalties already... this is ridiculous...

WWIN

To help my boy 86's prediction I'll post what I posted the other day

WWIN

I heard I few people say that they haven't seen ANY improvement from the D. I'll be the first to say I would have fired D'no last year. Did the D suck every game last year except for maybe ga tech? Yes. Did it suck halfway thru this season? Yes. Is it improving? Yes. I keep it real, also stats keep it real too.

Team Total yds

NC State 664
Notre Dame 587
UNC 486
FSU 447
Va Tech 421
*Virginia *482
South Fla 358

*Game without Zel, EJ, and Bush. Also note 87 yds came on the game winning drive, had the offense been able to run out the clock the total would be 395.

I believe it looks like improvements every game until Virginia. Also notice that out of these games the offensive production wasn't great until today which also helped the D get its lowest total yds. Is it great? Nope. But its improving and that's a good sign.

^^^^^^^^^^

So we've knocked off 306 yds from NC State 664 to south Fla 358, but yeah I guess y'all are right I don't see ANY improvements. LMAO

Old Skool

SI.com splaining why Maryland and Rutgers are on the move.

According to a television executive familiar with the Northeast corridor, the move could ultimately be worth as much as $200 million annually for the Big Ten in cable subscription fees. This is a Pollyannaish figure that's unlikely to ever materialize, but it shows the scope of the potential value. The interesting part, considering the current cable climate, is that the move also comes with considerable risk.

There are an estimated 15 million available households in the New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C. markets. If the Big Ten Network got on basic cable in all those places, which is an enormous long shot, the per-household figure by the time Rutgers and Maryland joined the league would project in the neighborhood of $1.25 per month. That would equate to about $200 million per year.

The risk comes because none of that money is guaranteed.

OGV- Nice point about not redshirting Morris last year. On the other hand, Morris will finish with over 3,000 yds 20+ tds with less than 10 int's. He's probably going to be 1st team all acc in the preseason & if he has a big year next season, with that big arm & escape ability he'll be a 1st round pick. Still going pro as a rs junior. So there wasn't any guarantee that red shirting him would've kept him a year longer...

If Golden & No'D don't get a new d-line coach & aggressively tighten up their defensive scheme in the off season. Next year's defense will just look like last year's defense. Slightly more fukked up than mediocre...

orange 'n green in the vein

That's pretty much all true Coke, plus Golden has not exactly been very good at keeping the early entries out of the draft at UM to this point. We'll see what happens with The Thing, I think he needs another year of weight room development unless he's willing to just lop off a huge chunk of draft contract money as a marginal first round pick at best right now. If Al can't talk him into staying as being his best option all around, Al probably can't talk anybody into saying no to the draft at all.

roachcane77

Willie... There was almost NO chance we could go DOWN from where we were defensively... so yes... we've improved. (It would have been nearly impossible NOT to.)

WOOHOO!

Kept USF to just under 400 yards with their 3rd string quarterback and receivers with hands of stone...

But yes... we've improved... We're currently "up" to 112 in total defense. YEAH BABY! WE'VE IMPROVED!
http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/1042/p3

Do you really see D'No with his schemes and defensive philosophy EVER getting the U into the top 10 in defense?

I for one think NOT... but that's JMHO.

Don't set your standards so LOW dude... 112... 112! (Gimmie a break.)

We're The U DAMMIT... this D is UNACCEPTABLE! PERIOD.

CoCane

OGV,

I'm not as against Golden as you are but I'm not still sold either. I DEFINETLY want his defensive philosophy, DC & d-line coach thrown into the Fat Bastards digestive system to be shyt out into a "portable potty" & thrown back into the fukkin sewer from wist it came! SMMFH :-(

orange 'n green in the vein

Still not computing how correctly predicting the guy wasn't as great of an out the gate hire as the worst AD in UM history made him out to be at the time and then correctly predicting he'd struggle to just get to .500 in year two is being 'against' someone but we both agree that defensive changes are going to be necessary or else '13 is going to go down as a pretty glaring missed opportunity. Coker would have a bit of trouble not winning the ACC next year with this team, Al better breeze on by most of these suckers.

roach, Willie is scheduled to end his honeymoon with D'No sometime in the winter of 2013 right now, but he might spring for another trip to the Caribbean if UM ranks in the last 3/4ths of teams defensively by then I think.

CoCane

I'll be SHOCKED if the defense ever finishes in the top 50 under these geniuses...

What is strange about this situation is that it reminds me of the years the old ball coach couldnt keep up with the top ten teams until he got Stoops as d coordinator... its very similar here now.

Ed Reed suspended for one game

November 19, 2012, 4:15 pm

Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed has been suspended without pay for one game for repeated violations of the NFL rule prohibiting helmet to helmet hits.

Reed was penalized for unnecessary roughness in the third quarter of Sunday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers for a hit to the head and neck area of, Emmanuel Sanders.

Due to the suspension Reed will not be allowed to practice this week as the Ravens’ prepare to play the San Diego Charges on Sunday. He also will not be allowed to be present at the team practice facility during any point of the suspension. Reed will be eligible to return on Monday, November 26.

jiggafras

We have a problem holding people accountable for their product. The D was garbage last year, it was atrocious this year, it will be terrible next year. We are not under sanctions yet, the NCAA is affecting recruiting not the current players, NO'D is just a poor.....check that, horrible DC. Golden keeping him around is only putting both of them on a short leash. Everyone sitting there saying he will get it better, is basing that off faith or Temple stats....both of which is ridiculous. I trust my eyes, and the ease with which some of the worst offenses in the country absolutely gut us...even with 3rd and 4th string QBs. The longer we keep this dude the more time it will take for us to get back to be even respectable.

orange 'n green in the vein

jiggafras, there's no reason the defense should be horrible next year, but the excuses that start when a terrible UF offense goes through them like a chainsaw the second week in the season will be equally parts hilarious and sad if it happens.

That is the prediction of all predictions to vault. I am not convinced, but I hope you are right because I am confident that Fisch will put some points on the board next year, so with DNo being the best coordinator that would mean that the Canes will win the ACC.

Hassan

Merriweather out with a ACL for the year after playing only 1 game this year and recording a INT in his only game....

Mcgahee has an MCL as an over 30 back this could really be a big set back, expected out 4-6 weeks.

today has been a bad day for Canes fans

BigWindyCane1

I also thought the Canes would announce their intentions for a bowl ban on Sunday, but they waited until today. It was the right thing to do because it allows the ACC to make arrangements for its bowl pairings.

I was thrilled to learn that the Canes could still be eligible to win the first-ever ACC Coastal Division title, and that is certainly progress under Golden.

The Canes should play this last game as if it were a bowl game and beat the Blue Devils senseless. This would create momentum on the recruiting trail and for next season.

The NCAA should certainly go lenient on the Canes given that UM graduates players, UM doesn't don't have many player arrests, current coaches and staff cooperated with the NCAA investigation and imposed an unprecedented two bowl bans and voluntary scholarship reductions.

Forgoing another bowl ban will help keep Seantrel and also help Golden keep and maybe strengthen its recruting class.

I feel bad for the seniors who did everything right and cannot compete in a bowl, but I guess it is better to swallow the bitter medicine now so the Canes prognosis is bright for the future.
