As expected by many of the so-called experts, legal wranglers, alleged insiders and average fans, today the University of Miami eagerly and loudly proclaimed "No soup for U" as they self-imposed a post-season ban for the second consecutive year for its football program.
This means that Miami will not be able to compete in the ACC Championship Game even if they win the Coastal Division by beating Duke next Saturday in Durham or go to a bowl game this post-season.
The only bowling Al Golden's team will likely be doing during the off-season in between the many brutal sessions of Andreu Swasey's "U Tough" conditioning program will be at Bird Bowl for some much needed team building activity.
As all UM fans know this move comes in anticipation of the looming NCAA sanctions in the wake of the now infamous Nelson Shapiro scandal at Miami involving alleged extra benefits to players and potential recruiting violations in the football and basketball programs.
The investigation into the NCAA rule violations has dragged on for two years now as University officials and the Hurricane fan base anxiously await the formal NCAA findings and the associated sanctions that are sure to follow.
Now that UM has announced the post-season ban it is likely that the NCAA report is soon to follow and should be announced by the end of November. The University then has the right to accept the sanctions as is or appeal them. That process could easily drag into January or February of next year.
At this point I think that all Hurricane fans will be glad when the University of Miami, its athletic department and its student-athletes can turn the page and put the past sins of this ugly situation clearly in their rear view mirror.
That is when UM head coach Al Golden and the 85 players on the current UM roster will be able to move forward with the much more positive pursuit of winning a sixth National Championship at "The U".
pbcfr...I'm only gonna tell U this one time:
WORRY IS JUST LIKE A ROCKING CHAIR,
IT KEEPS U BUSY, BUT GETS U NOWHERE.

We'll see how improved the D is this weekend. VA moved the ball at ease, esp through the air. USF had a 3rd string QB and a losing record. Not sure holding them to fewer yards proves very much after what VA did.
I said it weeks ago, if No'D is back next season and the results are a 118th ranked D again both AG and No'D will be gone.....

CBS Sports.com report that the ACC has targeted Big East members USF, Connecticut, Louisville and Cincinnati as potential replacements for Maryland.
Posted by: Old Skool | November 20, 2012 at 11:22 AM
If this is true, then it appears that the ACC is backing away from ACademiCs as a criteria for membership. However, CT and L'ville are good basketball schools - and the ACC is a premier basketball conference. So, anything is possible, I guess?
IT'S ALL ABOUT THE $$$.

Willie,
It would have to be the Golden one. Dopey was one dope o-coordiantor but head coaching was not his forte, at least not at the end of his tenure. Goldie, is a little like B.D.He's got this problem figured out, he just needs a few more horses to carry out the full assault. He isn't going anywhere either, at least not for a while. He's smart enough to understand, there is light at the end of this tunnel.

Interesting reading
The NYTimes 538 blog cross referenced Google search traffic in the various media market size to determine the respective sizes of the major colleges' fan bases
Number One: Ohio State which has an estimated 3,167,000+ fans
Michigan and Penn State round out the top three
The U is number 7 with an estimated 1,322,000+ fans which is almost 500,000 more than FSU
Other tidbits include:
the term “college football” is searched for about 5 times as often in Birmingham, Alabama as it is in New York City, relative to overall search traffic.
Miami is estimated to be the 7th most popular college football team in NYC.

Regarding the salaries of college coaches, I am surprised that it is not used as a political talking point by some. You would think that either one progressive state would view such salaries as unfair. Or a conservative dominated state calling into question the fiscal responsibility. Seems like an issue that either side could make into an issue. I wonder if and when it will happen.

Duke Johnson only needs 59 yards to break Portis' freshman rushing record, and Golden plans to try to help him break it.

The Chokies are politically required to be an ACC member until UVA is no longer one are they not? I thought when their governor of the state forced UVA to only vote for their inclusion in the expansion to 12 that was the catch wasn't it? Maybe I'm confused.

I think everyone in the ACC is going to be looking around in the next few years. I didn't believe Maryland would leave until they did. Fees, politics, loyalty, geography are all secondary issues now. the good news for UM? If it really is about tv numbers, and fans in the stands become secondary concerns, UM is miles ahead of the rest of the nation.

We are dealing with serious a-holes in the NCAA:
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/sports-buzz/2012/11/ncaa-gives-ultimatum-to-players-in-um-investigation-canes-dolphins-marlins-heat-chatter.html
If former players don't cooperate by Nov. 23 and agree to interviews, they will consider their fialure to cooperate as an admission of Shapiro's allegations.
Wow, just wow. No amount of contrition will ever satisfy these arrogant SOB's.

The NCAA acts like a bunch of Nazi's! As a consumer of college football i am growing tired of all these "investigations" THESE PLAYERS NEED TO UNIONIZE AND NEGOTIATE THESE RIDICULOUS RULES! These universities treat these players like a bunch of employees with no pay! The players SHOULD have some rights! Write a blog about that....
Posted by: Jack | November 21, 2012 at 07:22 AM
I don't see how they can substantiate the word of a convicted felon. This would never hold up in court. In my opinion they are bluffing. If I were a former player I would tell them to sod off

""The purpose of this letter is to apprise you that the NCAA enforcement staff is requesting to schedule an interview with your clients regarding their knowledge of or involvement in possible NCAA violations concerning the University of Miami, Florida, football program.
"Interviewing your clients is important in order for the enforcement staff to conduct a thorough investigation, and both the staff and the institution request you and your clients’ cooperation in this matter. However, at this time, all attempts to schedule and execute interviews with [blank] have been unsuccessful. As a result, this letter serves as a formal and final request by the NCAA enforcement staff for interviews with [blank] to be completed by Nov. 23, 2012.
“If we do not hear back from you or your clients by that time, the staff will consider the non-response as your client’s admission of involvement in NCAA violations. You may contact me at [blank] in order to arrange this interview. Your assistance in this matter is appreciated.”
Sincerely,
Molly Richman,
Assistant Director of Enforcement
Come on, people. There's more to it. Read between the lines.
First, let's address the fact that the NCAA is setting a DANGEROUS precedent. Previously, the NCAA acted as an independent, fact-finding governing body. Their decisions may have seemed a little extreme, but their process was at least thorough. The possible exception to this was the Penn State affair, publicly responding in such a manner when the investigating had been done for them.
This new "talk now or else" tells a lot of things.
1. The clients refuse to speak to the NCAA. They either have been advised to do so or independently have done so. This is hardly an admission of guilt, but instead a plea of the 5th. Given the NCAA's mindset of decisions, there is nothing to gain by talking to them. Don't simplify by assuming there's something to hide. Innocent people accused of crimes are advised by council. "Anything you say can and will be used against you..."
2. The NCAA needs their stories to move forward. They can't move forward without them. Reading between the lines, the NCAA wants to wrap this up and clear their docket. But it can't due to the complexity of the case and the varying amounts of information. This comes from the decision makers ("suits") in the NCAA trying to make their image NFL-esque, and it isn't that simple.
3. The process itself has been a strain to the NCAA. Golden knows nothing. He himself has been shielded from such a process and has admitted that more than a few times in interviews. What did fall under his watch has been presented to the NCAA (suspensions last year, Armstrong, etc). Shannon warned the players about Shapiro. The Charles Robinson story is filled with more holes and inconsistencies than a Presidential debate. They've been fact-finding with an accused felon, coaches at different schools, players with professional careers, and other evidence. For them, it's frustrating.
4. Consider the timing. UM removes itself from postseason consideration despite pressure from the ACC to do so. A few days later, here comes the letter with a deadline for response. The letter is sent out close to the holidays. The deadline is Black Friday. Interesting set of circumstances, especially the dates.
Happy holidays.
