The Shortlist to South Beach has hit the home stretch in the race to the finish line and is reconfigured to rank the 10 teams left by order of worthiness as follows:
Notre Dame, Kansas State, Oregon, Ohio State, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, FSU, Clemson and Louisville.
Just a single team lost a game last week to fall out of Shortlist contention as the Oregon State Beavers get pounded into submission by the Stanford Cardinal 27-23. Mike Riley's team watches a lot of potential conference payday dissipate into thin air thanks to this final but the year still has the potential to be one to remember if they can somehow triumph in their rivalry game to end the season and really shake the BCS standings to their core before it's all over.
For another week I predict that no teams will find themselves eliminated from the Shortlist to South Beach, as a lot of the remaining squads once again see a low level of on field competition before rivalry finales are on deck for many. A few upsets in the last week of play could cause absolute havoc with the best laid projections as always seems to be the case when the stone engravings of the postseason get too settled in college football.
Enjoy the games this week and join me back here next week as the Shortlist to South Beach draws to the doorstep of its conclusion in 2012.

On Aug. 17, two weeks before the 2000 football season would begin, Parker got the DNA results back. It was a match.
From the get-go, Stevens was crucial to the team's success. The Huskies' top receiver from 1999 was injured. Others were inexperienced. The UW's passing game was a question mark.
Stevens provided an answer.
In September, the UW won its first three games of the season, twice coming from behind. When the Huskies upset No. 4 Miami in the second game, Stevens recorded a career day: seven catches, 89 yards, one touchdown. The next week — on Sept. 16 — he did even better against Colorado, making seven catches for 102 yards, winning team honors as offensive MVP.
With its 3-0 start, the UW climbed to No. 8 in the national rankings.

This just in, UVA = really bad team in 2012.
Great job Philly mutants, still not as embarrassing as that opener last year though at least.

I wonder if its out of bounds to suggest that Miami trade tannehill and draft Barkley next april

o much for any argument that UVA was really a good team with a crappy record. They are what we thought they were. We blew it.
Posted by: j.w. | November 15, 2012 at 11:34 PM
Not to mention there were two linebackers missing from the defense and it was the UVA passing game that lit D'No's scheme up mostly. Well, he does like to cover those slot wide-outs with linebackers, so maybe he needed better linebackers for that particular job?
No that sounds too stupid to be a UM defensive M.O. So then why do they insist on continually calling that personnel grouping in throwing situations? Somebody better be losing there job and he better not have any UM or Super Bowl championships rings on his fingers when the ax drops.

Tony,
What has barkley shown you this year???? Imo he missed out last year cuz his stock has dropped this year

That Stevens article is wow! That dude is a f@g. Right up there with Big Ben and Vick. I hope Stevens kills himself. UVA sucks. Why is D'Onofrio still our D Coordinator again? Hasn't he proven he isn't good at his job. Seriously, I'd have to be banging the boss to screw up as bad as he does and still keep my job. Oh, wait... I don't want to start any rumors.
Posted by: The Dude | November 16, 2012 at 12:59 AM
Jim Larranaga doesn't seem very well...I wonder how the players can be motivated by a coach like him.
I watched the first two games and a number of interviews with him since training camp and this guy is so boring. Perhaps he is sick, i hope not.
His interview today...

Ok, after seeing UVA lose lastnight I am now PISSED OFF at the canes and the coaches! Both need to be accountable! Get mad canes and do something about it these last two games. I can't believe we lost to both those teams I was watching lastnight! We have a long way to go. Damn it!

The nU Normal - A "successful season" is 6 wins and a self-imposed bowl ban.
Posted by: nemo2002 | November 16, 2012 at 08:02 AM
For those upset about the UVA loss.....realize that NC is a pretty good team and certainly better than us. It all starts with the front four and North Carolina was putting pressure on the QB all night long.....something we didn't (and can't) do.
Posted by: raizecane | November 16, 2012 at 08:05 AM
geez-I hate to beat a dead horse but was this school ever investigated for this stuff? If the U players did this we would be on National news, and facing the death penalty:

His stock has dropped significantly. Still may go high, but was reading that a lot of scouts consider him the next Sanchez. Not a good thing.

Welcome to the world of the ACC where mediocracy is the name of the game. Games are won up front. Miami's offensive line is above average, really good enough to be at worst 9-3 or 8-4 but alas, it takes the defensive front to make the equation true and for us, unfortunately, our De-Line doesn't rate a grade, so there's the problem. Here we go again with a nobody QB facing us and maybe just maybe this will be the week we break our streak of these nobodies lighting us up. If ever there was a week somebody finally threw us a bone this is it. If we blow this, some heads need to roll. "Da U" 31-17.

On this Date in Hurricanes History: November 16, 1991 - Wide Right I
Miami’s win represented the fourth time in five years that the Hurricanes knocked Florida State out of national championship contention. The game was also the first of a peculiar string of five over the next 12 years in which Florida State lost to Miami due to a late missed field goal that would have won or tied the game, often with national championship implications at stake

Off to the 954 then the 305.
OGV there is no party on the patio tonight as Raize and I have other commitments with our respective families in SoFl so U and the lovely Anatasia are on your own.
We can all ride together to the game IF we can meet at The Hampton EARLY at 10AM and leave by 10:30 AM. Raize wants to arrive early to tailgate since this is his only and last game of the season.
Kenny is heading out at 9:30 AM so that opition is out too.

What ever USF's yards per game is go ahead and triple it with Coach NO d
Posted by: Sinistercane | November 16, 2012 at 12:04 PM
This weeks game may tell the story for No'D and AG. Like last week it's a game we should be able to win. But another loss and I'm not sure the fans won't turn on them both, and like last year the players will pack in it.
It's all or nothing this weekend! I think we pull it out, 31-28.....
86, I left alot of weeds to pull just in case...

C'mon now, we did have a 3 game streak before the Virginia game where qb's didn't look heisman like. Renner, Thomas, and Manuel didn't look heisman like.
Posted by: WWIN | November 16, 2012 at 02:22 PM
That makes sense, Willie Will
Of course most of these posters prefer to be chicken littles, sky is falling types. These are some of the most negative fans around but it's typical of a lot of canes fans. They bitch and moan and then don't even bother to show up. It's called being frontrunners.
Posted by: Caneitis | November 16, 2012 at 02:39 PM
Pretty sure both 'bitching' and 'moaning' are completely warranted when a coach produces the worst edition of a football program in history statistically. Also not much demand for a mediocrity addled product playing terrible product in sports but by all means, blame the fans as the problem some more so you can sperg off to your Al Golden plushie at night with a clear conscience if it helps.
86, give you a call Saturday morning to meet up.

And I was one that talked about how but our D was last year and half way thru this year, but I would be lying if I said I haven't seen any improvements, I keep it real. And a lot of them can't accept being wrong, even when the D stepped up and the offense was horrible they still blame it on the D. To be honest canes fans suck now and they say the team suck, its going to take all four to get back on top. Fans, players, coaches, and administration.
Posted by: WWIN | November 16, 2012 at 02:58 PM
Actually it's not going to take all 4 to get back on top. Winning will take care of the fans and that's coming. We need about 6 more difference makers, to get back near the top. We still have depth issues at certain positions or should I say we need a little more star power at certain positions. That's 2 issues out of the way. The administration, is another issue. We need an AD that eats, sleeps, and Drinks the Canes. The coaching staff I'm giving them a pass until mid season next year and if the ZHerb is still witnessing the Defense getting gutted to the tune of 200 yds a game on the ground, then the lynch mob needs to go get a rope. Golden has had only one true class to call his own. With everyone back on the 3 deep depth chart but 5, we should have no excuses for mediocracy, the only real problem will be the DEE line again. We have 2 many space takers and we definetly don't need to be playing off the ball 10 yds next year. We should be back to man in your face bump and run. That's one reason we don't support sweeps, until they've gotten 5 yds or so because once the ball is snapped the corners are even further back, back peddling and don't react quick enough in run support. Our LB's should be a hellave lot better next year. The line & lb's has to get better, no doubt if we are to turn the DEE around but you have to have some players who are studs or who are going to be studs and we are a little void of that right now. We all knew coming in that this was going to be an iffy season. I mean if everything went right, we could of ended up 9-3 or as you've seen it could be potentially 5-7 but more realistically 7-5.
Posted by: herbieibis | November 16, 2012 at 03:31 PM
I meant 2 deep depth chart.

WHEN IS CGNC COMING DOWN FOR A GAME? 2013 GATORS?
Posted by: canezilla | November 16, 2012 at 03:44 PM
Herb,
Good post. I just think if the kids had more support they would play better. You wouldn't tell your son that sucks in basketball that you're not coming to his games until he gets better or until his team is good would you?? I'm not asking you herb I'm just saying. I hate the excuse of fans saying they won't come to games until the team is good, real fans are down for the good and the bad not just the good times
Posted by: WWIN | November 16, 2012 at 03:49 PM
OGV - it's clearly personal with you and this coaching staff. It's obsessive and almost childish, to be honest, the way you express yourself.
I have serious doubts about the staff, specifically the defense, but I don't have a crystal ball, I don't know what will happen over the next couple of years, and am trying to remain optimistic. Mainly because I have no other choice. This is who we have as a staff. That's not changing. No amount of negativity on my part will change that.
So I guess if I'm trying to keep an even keel about this I must be somebody who "spergs off to a Golden plushie". I mean that's not even funny. But in the spirit of reciprocity, this team failing must make you feel better at night as you sperg off to your Randy Shannon plushie.

Posted by: Sinistercane | November 16, 2012 at 04:26 PM
Here us a post from another fan site that more eloquently explains the choice between a negative and positive attitude:
"
Posted: Today 4:12 PM
My take on what grassy has become...
This board (IMHO) comes down to one of two things for virtually everyone: Positive attitude and Negative attitude.
If you love college football (particularly University of Miami College Football) you can choose to enjoy each game and all that comes with it ...
Or your can choose to measure everything with the glossy excellence and pure superiority of past glories (not yours but the 'Canes of '83, '87, '89, '91, and '01). I call this negative because nothing (including the games, players and staffs from those MNC years) can measure up to your lofty expectations of what Miami football should be. Negative because the projected attitude is that the University OWES you that level of success and satisfaction.
I have more than half of the contributors to this site on ignore but that does not mean I only view the positive attitude. I appreciate the frustration and disappointment of fellow 'Cane fans and welcome all opinions expressed with at least a minimum of respect for the program, it's coaches, players, staff and administration.
If you choose to support them, this is your team and they compete and perform, in part, to satisfy you. The "U" is a family that welcomes your participation and we all have some responsibility for what this brand represents and how it is perceived.
Enjoy and
Go 'Canes!"
The only difference I would have with this is that I do believe we can reclaim past glory sometime in the future with the right players and coaches. Whether these coaches are the right ones, I don't know, only time will tell.
