When I first heard the news that UM football player Thomas Finnie had turned himself in for criminal charges associated with the theft of a laptop computer I felt many things. However, unlike some others out there on the Internet, joy or pride were not among them.
No, the three emotions I felt most strongly were: sadness, disappointment and frustration.
I felt sad that any of the current Miami players would get arrested or have an encounter with the criminal justice system. I felt even sadder that one of my favorite players had apparently or allegedly made a bad decision.
But the saddest I felt was when some Hurricane fans somehow found a sense of accomplishment in reporting what was once only a rumor and was possibly completely false that later turned out to be news and was now possibly or seemingly true. Maybe it's just me but I fail to see the joy or pride in that?
Now before we get too far ahead of ourselves, Thomas Finnie, like all defendants, is innocent until proven guilty. And let us all hope that he is innocent of the charges against him. Let us ALL hope.
I felt disappointment that a young person with their whole life in front of them, a student-athlete at the university that I attended, was subject to criminal charges against another UM student. Things like that should not happen. Not in Coral Gables, and no, not anywhere.
I felt frustration for the Miami Hurricanes' athletes, coaches and administration. After all the effort and hard work that the University of Miami has put into restoring a positive image towards its academic accomplishments and its athletic department's reputation it was frustrating to see this potential black eye being displayed publicly for all the world to see.
But most of all I felt sad, disappointed and frustrated for the young man in question.
Thomas Finnie was a good player who may have made a bad decision.
Let us all hope that is not the case.

Warren Sapp, University of Miami teammate (1992-1995): "He was a specimen. He looked great. He always looked great. He was tan, curly hair. He was the kind of guy you want your sister to date, because he was a nice guy. I always said that to him.
"When he was [first] there, I was a tight end in high school and I got [to Miami] as a tight end and linebacker, and they moved me over to D-line. I was real reluctant to do so. I thought I was a pretty good tight end and a pretty good athlete, but being 290 pounds, they moved me to D-line and said, 'We need you to rush the passer or you can go home.'
"So I came into the D-line room and sat down, and Dwayne Johnson walks in and says, 'What are you doing here?'
"I said, 'I’m here for your job.' So that’s how me and him had our introduction to each other. I said it jokingly, but I was there for his job."
Warren Sapp was a te in HS. I did not remember that. Why cant we find guys with motors and put them on the d line?
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | December 12, 2012 at 07:28 PM
It seems like to me we are looking for the wrong kind of player. We used to get athletes and put the weight on them. Why do they need to weigh 270 coming out of High School? Get a big athlete and pack the weight on him.
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | December 12, 2012 at 07:42 PM
That was not real UMike or hassan. Both those guys know.

#34 & WWIN,
I can tell you, I hated horses. They scared the crap out of me. Then when I went through Teton National Forrest on a snowy winters day, it just kind of made sense. It turned out to be fun. I still dont trust them when they are roped up and stuff. I always think they will kick me or bite me, but they are fun to ride in the wilderness. Something primal about it.

I think we still do that. Just not as successfully as before. Calais Campbell and Allen Bailey come to mind. They were both good players.

It's funny that Sapp said He was linebacker, because I always viewed Him as a fat ass linebacker, who was glorified as a D-Tackle (LMAO).

To DE?
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | December 12, 2012 at 08:36 PM
I honestly dont think D'Onofrio or Golden want a Warren Sapp for their scheme. I think they are looking for a Vince Wilfork to plug the run and a Clay Matthews to rush the QB.

A.J. McCarron announces he’s coming back to Alabama for his senior season
We need to recruit players like him.

Duke Johnson @BrickByBrick_8
I'm gonna have fun over the break, but I still have to work hard I haven't accomplish anything yet...
And players like him too.
Posted by: Montreal-Cane | December 12, 2012 at 08:58 PM
My point is that all these players who put us in the top five on d in the country were nobodies coming out of hs. I remember guys like brown and sap, even wilfork kind of smallish when they were soph.
Seems to me that we want guys 300 pounds coming out of hs. I always question how athletic the big guys were. Just because a guy is big and benches more than anyone else doesnt mean hes gonna move like he needs to. So I always thought thats what we did back in the day when we were respected was to get an athletic tall guy maybe a lot underweight and then by his junior year we get him fully developed. So thats why we were always in the top five in the country on d.
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | December 12, 2012 at 09:01 PM
Russell Maryland was another not so highly recruited guy.I think the difference between then and now was the culture at Miami. It used to be that losing was the end of the world. We developed the best players in the country not recruited the best players in the country. We also developed the best mentality for the game.
