Take my advice: This is going to be one wild ride!
Another National Signing Day (NSD) is just around the corner and just like the opening ceremony at the Olympic Games every few years you never know quite what to expect. However, we can be almost certain that head games, hat games, misdirection plays, double switches and some dirty dealing and double crossing are definitely on the agenda.
The only thing that is clear is that at some designated time in the early morning hours of Wednesday, February 6 the NCAAwill declare NSD open for business at college campuses all around the Nation with what basically amounts to a loud proclamation of: "Let the Games begin!"
Fax machines will begin to whir as they spring to life with what is the life blood of any college football team: A National Letter of Intent (NOI) from high school seniors and JUCO players across the Country.
Both coaches and fans alike will alternately cheer and curse as the news of who signs where comes out in rapid-fire succession as each NOI is received and formally approved by the compliance departments at each school. Spontaneous celebrations of joy will break out and a few cell phones will be smashed in mad desperation about the one that got away.
To follow the fast-paced action, of course you can tune into Canespace as our recruiting gurus will be on hand all day to report each official "Welcome to The U!" as it is announced. In addition, we strongly encourage Hurricane fans to check out these exciting options that the University of Miami athletic department is offering Hurricane fans on NSD 2013:
Both HurricaneSports.com and ESPN3 will provide live Signing Day Coverage of the Miami Hurricanes footballprogram. The Voice of the Miami Hurricanes, Joe Zagacki, and color analyst Don Bailey Jr. will host a live Signing Day show from 8:30-10 a.m. on HurricaneSports.comas NLIs begin rolling in on Wed., Feb. 6. ESPN3 will then pick up national coverage from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.Joe Z and DBJ will interview head coach Al Goldenand the Hurricanes assistant coaches in addition to Miami’s early enrollees and some of its current stars. As Miami receives each NLI, HurricaneSports.com will have video highlights, recruiting rankings and assistant coaches on camera to talk about the Hurricanes’ Class of 2013 additions.
Coach Golden will address the media for National Signing Day press conference at 4 p.m., followed by the Hurricanes’ Fan Signing Day Party from 5-7 p.m. at Buffalo Wild Wings in Sunset Place.
However you choose to spend your National Signing Day we recommend that you buckle up tight. It is sure to be one wild and crazy ride all day long.

Three things, albeit of questionable importance but hopefully entertaining/useful nonetheless:
(1) Dan Marino's CBS lover is hot (and married!): http://www.newyorksocialdiary.com/i/partypictures/07_06_09/15_6338242437274675002730204_32_DYounisCYounisNYounis_070309.jpg
http://www.heavy.com/regions/2013/01/donna-savattere-dan-marino-love-child-mother-facts/
(2) Sandwiched between Alex Collins' announcement and NSD is NATIONAL PANCAKE DAY at IHOP! Whether they're victory pancakes or "go to hell/we don't need you anyways/you're making the biggest mistake of your life" pancakes (in classic Canefanatic fashion lol), make sure you make your way over to IHOP for a free shortstack on Tuesday Feb. 5th! http://www.ihoppancakeday.com/
(3) Sometimes the world is TOO small in the sense that the dude formerly from the 49ers who allegedly raped the other dude is the brother of former Cane (and 5-star bust) Orien Harris (some of you probably already knew about this connection, but it was news to me): http://www.i4u.com/2013/01/kwame-harris/kwame-one-time-former-sauce-his-over-baller-ex-boyfriend-fade-harris
Final note: has there ever been a crazier start to a new year?!?!?!
GO CANES!!!

Willie,
Sorry I haven't got back to you with my reply but I'll make this short and sweet. Talent wins Ships and if you follow the recruiting circuit, you'll see the teams with the most 4 & 5 star players are the teams winning the ships. Now some of those stars are going to be bust, it happens. It's a new age and it's just the facts. Eddie Johnson had a nice year but where was he at at the end of the year. Al had him on ice. Consistency, dog! We've had plenty of 1 year wonders. Show me some all ACC, type talent on the field, Like Duke did.I'll give you these names and you tell me what kind of talent do we have. Rodgers, Highsmith, Cain, Gaines, L. Robinson, Porter, Green, Armbrister, & Cornelius. These Guys have started at one time or another on defense. Where's the star power. Not even a 3RD team all ACC & Green had no sacks as a DE. He's a great story and he's a tough kid but for the most part these guys would be nothing more than descent back ups at your top schools. If this is being negative then the truth must hurt because you ain't watching the same games I was watching. I'm not loving these guys because it's a dam pity party, it's only results I'm looking for and we ain't winning nothing with a bunch mediocre players. You can love them all you want but it's the truth. You like 6'1 DT's, then I suggest you watch division 3 Football, because the last time I checked, we don't play no 3-4 and we have 4 that size. I like what Al is doing, I believe in him and I hope the pot at the end of this rainbow, is flowing with Bryant, Coley, Thomas, Kirkland, Collins, Edwards, Bostwick & Grace, that my friend is what I call a lot of talent.

But Mrs.Feliciano...sh!!!!!T, now She's hot in a "just slap some margarine on that b!tch and sprinkle some a lot of that Lawrys seasoning on that mutheffa type of way".
And my orange and green shades work just fine THANK YOU! LMAO!
Posted by: CaneRock | January 31, 2013 at 02:21 PM
Herb,
That is avery mediocre list. What makes your vision questionable is that you continue to mention Porter with those scrubs. Not just Golden, D'No & Franklin but even Kirk Herbstreit plus other notable analysts all agreed that Curtis Porter is the difference maker at DT they've been missing. He's had some bad roll of the dice injuries, so obviously there's no production if you don't play. I won't say he's all acc but he has that potential if healthy if people that really know the game says our Entire defensive production suffers when he's not on the field.
Bottom line you're entitled to your own opinion but I would never disrespect Porter but mentioning his talent & ability with the players that you grouped him with.
Posted by: CoCane | January 31, 2013 at 02:38 PM
CoCane,
The dudes been here going on 5 years and yes he has been hurt and when he has played he's been descent but he hasn't been a game changer and he ain't sacking the QB, now if he supposedly makes everyone around him start playing better, so be it but we still coughed up over 400 yds a game, so you be the judge.

1st of all. Even the most dominant DT's usually don't get a lot of sacks. 2nd, he didn't come back until the 9th game of the season after HIS APPENDIX BURST. He didn't play in top condition. 3rd the run defense was much better when he came back. Lastly & the biggest point I was making. He's not as garbage as the other players you mentioned. PERIOD. They're career back ups. Porter would have started the last couple of seasons if healthy. And he's the best DT we have including Olson Pierre, that helped that D-line suck azz until Porter came back. I would say he's injury prone but you can't say his play is as bad as those guys you named. To be fair, I'll wait til I see him play next year to officially label him a difference maker. Can't really judge him until he's healthy for a full season.

----------------------------------------
Have to completely agree with this. Vince Wilfork, all bias aside, has been one of the most dominant DT's EVER.
U know how many sacks he has for his career? 16
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 31, 2013 at 03:39 PM
CoCane,
You're right about that, he is the best we got, which isn't saying much. You are also right about the dt's not getting to many sacks, but where does it say, in the rules that they can't put pressure on the QB? Last, our defense can't help but be better next year, another year stronger, another year wiser, plus we didn't lose anyone, except Mcgee.
Posted by: herbieibis | January 31, 2013 at 03:42 PM
And for all of the those that want to
BE part of the CANES family & tradition!
The "loved football" part was perhaps most important. Gore was a great example, as he came to Miami despite having to wait behind Portis and McGahee. Asked at Super Bowl media day Tuesday why he didn't shy away from that, Gore said, "Competition. If you want to be the best, you have to play with the best. I wasn't scared of competition."
Gore carried a football around campus in those days, held high and tight, because he knew his day would come. "He could care less about anything but school and football," says Mike Rumph, one of those 17 first-round picks. "Most guys are chasing girls, thinking about stuff at home. Not him. First day out to practice, most guys have special sleeves or new shoes. He's out there with no gloves. Just a jersey, shorts, and helmet. He was like Mike Tyson."
---------
"The toughest battle was Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday," says Schiano. "That's the thing I remember – the competition." Asked if it was as intense as the NFL, Schiano said: "In some ways even more so. At the U of Miami, we were trying to bring the program back. There was such a hunger there. That's one of the reasons they practiced so hard against each other."

Herb,
Thanks for responding. Although I asked you like 30 questions and you only answered 0. I like how you said you like what Golden is doing but you don't think he's going to close on signing day. So a 6'2 dt is better than a 6'1 dt?
Posted by: WWIN | January 31, 2013 at 04:12 PM
Herb,
Also it's a BIG DIFFERENCE between Golden's 2* & 3*'s vs Coker and Shannon's

Great work lately 86 and all U posters bringing the news. The articles have been as good as the hoops squad this off season! Seems like all kinds of things are looking up for The U these days! Now, if the baseball team can get thier act together...RIP Coach Fraser. Thank U.

Willie,
6'2 is closer to 6'3 than 6'1 is. What's the difference between Shannon's & Coker's 2's & 3's than Al's? What have Al's 2's & 3's done yet. That's not a fair question because Al's boy's haven't had time to mature yet. I guess the jury is still out.
I also hope Goldie is hooping & hollaring on NSD and you dam right, I do want them signed, sealed & delivered. Read on Canesport, what Gary Ferman said about recruiting. He must of stole my story from canespace yesterday because he's saying the same thing I said yesterday on here. We shouldn't be sitting here waiting on 8 or 9 guys to define our class, maybe 2 to 4 but not that many. Hop on over and read it.

They did win the ship. They did shut N.D. down.I beleive they were ranked #1 defensively, so what do we have in common with them?

Herb,
According to you a smurf is 6'1 but a beast is 6'2???
Who have YOU PERSONALLY seen play in person????
Golden is a helluva lot better at recruiting and evaluating talent than Coker and Shannon. But which side are you on? Because I thought you said you liked what Golden is doing? But you just mentioning gary ferman, now I understand where you come up wit all this stuff now.
Posted by: WWIN | January 31, 2013 at 05:47 PM
I just looked at the announcement schedule televised by ESPN. Stacey Coley is scheduled at 11:00 am. Makenzie Alexander is scheduled for 11:15 am. Canes are on from 11-12.

Stars are a funny thing... U don't need them to create a winning, successful program (see TCU, Boise, etc)... Having them is no guarantee of success (see TX or USC lately)... BUT, not having them seems to make winning the NC close to impossible these days (all the past 7 NCs had significant numbers of highly ranked classes and NFL caliber talent).

Wow, Manny Navarro reporting that Denver Kirkland is "OUT OF THE PICTURE" !
Posted by: The Wizard | January 31, 2013 at 08:24 PM
Per John Bastian on twitter, Canes have informed Denver Kirkland that they no longer have a schollie available for him.
Posted by: semperfi_cane | January 31, 2013 at 08:25 PM
Per Manny:
Guess I should have stuck around for the end of Booker T. Washington's state championship parade.
All-American offensive lineman Denver Kirkland confirmed Thursday night UM is no longer in the picture for him, just a couple of hours after saying he loved the coaches and the program.
What led to this surprising news? Kirkland said he had a private conversation with UM assistant coach Micheal Barrow and Booker T. head coach Tim "Ice" Harris following the parade in which they discussed an issue that came up with him going to UM.
Was it academics? "Yeah, it was an academic thing," Kirkland said.
Is it that you didn't have the grades or test score to get in? "No, not that," he said.
Is he upset? "No. I'm still going to play college football somewhere," he said.
Kirkland said his final four is now South Florida, Florida State, Ole Miss sand Arkansas.

How does it affect '6'? Also, how does he state is has to do with academic issues in the conversation, but not that he hasn't qualified. It's a confusing statement.
Posted by: HawaiiCane | January 31, 2013 at 08:40 PM
The train has left Denver Kirkland.
Posted by: The Wizard | January 31, 2013 at 08:48 PM
Doesn't affect 6 whatsoever. From what it looks like, staff has known for a while.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 31, 2013 at 08:54 PM
I'm just hoping that the coaches have already been notified which players are picking the Canes, and the schollies just ran out. However, hope is certainly not a strategy.
Posted by: semperfi_cane | January 31, 2013 at 09:01 PM
Why we have to say no to Denver? Imo, let's just use Edwards scholly offer for Kirkland and make sure we keep a lineage with BTW, that is more important to me and majority of south florida canes fans. This is not gonna sit well with Six and future recruits coming out of that high school.
I know Coley likes the FB commit to syracuse but Edwards is not a big need, we have Dillard to play as fullback.

I'm just about done with this recruiting cycle, it's frustrating to see how everything is unfolding.
Would very much love for us to compete nationally in recruiting, i'm not much of a stargazer but there is certain perception in a team that finishes up with big time recruits, i want that quality of perception to be back in coral gables, that's all!

Funny how Denver's last tweet was 'Trust no one but God', i think there's more to this story, Denver done it the right way, we all wish for kids to do it the right way and not horse around with commitments, this kid waits and approaches everything with class, with less than a week he was told by coaches you have no spot. I think this is on our coaches and not him.
