Three or four years from now, when it is all said and done, the University of Miami's 2012 recruiting class may go down in history as THE class that turned it all around for Miami and restored the Hurricanes to their rightful place among college football's elite programs.
In terms of quality, and the sheer quantity of players signed by UM on National Signing Day 2012, this class of high school recruits has the chance to rank among the best ever at Miami.
On paper and on potential this class of 33 players that now accounts for almost 40% of the entire 85 man roster at UM is the infusion of talent and toughness that Hurricanes head coach Al Golden said he needed to get things right in Coral Gables.
Now it will be up to Golden and his assistant coaches to coach up this new group of players at "The U" so that they can reach their maximum potential and return the Hurricanes to national prominence and championship glory.
With the cards stacked against them, UM head coach Al Golden and his assistant coaches managed to work their magic to land this tremendous class in spite of a mediocre 2011 season and potential NCAA sanctions looming over the program like a black cloud.
Miami fans I talked to at the NSD party on the UM Campus Wednesday night were wondering out loud: "If Golden can recruit like this under circumstances like this what can he do if and when the sanctions are gone and Miami starts winning again?"
Our first article about NSD 2012 will break down the recruiting class by the numbers:
- Number of players signed: 24 (not counting the 9 EEs)
- Number of defensive players on NSD: 14
- Number of offensive players on NSD: 10
- Number of players from Florida (NSD): 21
- Number of players from Southwest Florida: 6
- Number of players from Dade County: 5
- Number of players from Broward County: 5
- Number of players from Palm Beach County: 3
- Number of players from other States: 3 (GA, PA, LA)
- Number of defensive backs: 6
- Number of wide receivers: 5
- Number of defensive lineman: 4
- Number of NSD hits on Canespace: 14,773
- Number of NSD comments on Canespace: 590
We appreciate the hard work and effort that UM head coach Al Golden and his staff put into the recruiting process this year. We believe that by they have brought in one of the best classes in Miami Hurricane football history.
Can U only imagine what 2013 will bring?
86,
For the most part, they don't show to much love for the "U".
Canerock, I'm going to have some malice, for someone if we lose most of these dudes to FSU and their brand new coaching staff. I know Goldie wants to build the 100 mile wall back around DA U but if these dudes skip town, he better take that picket fence he has up now and get to buiding.

Not a bad attempt, needs more veiled references to how bad the '07 coordinated offense was under Cristobal at FIU though. Making indirect fun of Staten Island high school football was spot on though my friend, lol.
UM, SOUP knows you and I have been sighted in the same place at the same time previously so he can't claim a Wayne/Batman scenario regarding the two of us. Mcginns though might take a stab in the dark at it however if you bring up the defensive coaches moving Kirkland's replacement to OT two practices into spring though . . .

Uh, I saw a lot of "Snitches get stitches," shirts this year at some embarrassing home defeats on those who decided not to go to the beach that particular day and couldn't help but think of Moss and not a single Broward County carry he ever had CR. I'm just saying . . .

HI, if we land Collins and Coley, I straight, everything else is just icing on the cake. I know they're not bad players, but from a recruiting standpoint, I was never really sold on Thomas and Kirkland. Some kids, just are not U kids, and I just never got that vibe from them...it is what it is.

CR, one one hand we have stitches which are being applied to snitches, on the other a multi-OT win at Clemson in the middle of a decades long ACC title drought for the Tigers.
One rhymes, one was a little pinhole of light in a ditch digging era thanks to that rhyme. Which one would Johnny Cochran side with in his closing arguments of how best to surmise Ty Moss at UM's contribution to history if he where alive today? I bet there was more money netted on the shirts than there were at all the home games in the OB Moss played in already.

His time on the field is done, let Moss LIVE HIS LIFE!

And SOUP, if I'm not mistaken, Moss did make it to the NFL, the Cleveland Browns IIRC.

Tyrone Moss' Browns Career Lasts a Week
May/09/07 11:47 AM Filed in: Tyrone Moss
Just a couple of days ago, the Akron Beacon-Herald was suggesting that Tyrone Moss could work his way into the Browns' running back rotation as an undrafted free agent., and Moss was comparing himself to Jamal Lewis.
Sure, he ran an unimpressive 4.75 40-yard dash, but the thought was that he was a very solid back at Miami before some injuries, so maybe he could be an interesting power back. He had been considered by many draft guides as a potential late-round pick heading into the draft.
Well apparently he looked worse than awful in the Browns rookie minicamp. Without a chance to ever put on some shoulder pads, Moss was cut on Tuesday.

I'm baffled that a lot of you say "Trust Al Golden". What has he done to even allow that thought to think about crossing your mind? Oh yeah, he did say he knew nothing about the whole Shapiro allegations. But nearly everyone on this blog and college football knew. This guy is a poser and pretender. If it takes firing him to get rid of his guy with the title of Defense Coordinator, please do it.
Posted by: dg | February 01, 2013 at 02:57 PM
alot of worry over an OL.....when we really need some DT's and DE's.....
Can you imagine the impact if instead of Seantrell (a good player) we had gotten a few decent D lineman? I would offer we'd have won more games as a result of it than we ended up with.
Great OL are a luxury. DL are what win games....
I wish the kid best of luck, but what I'm looking for is players who are ready to play for the U and not become a storyline before they even show up.

That's the part I hate. I love the excitement of seeing how we fill our needs, but I have paid less attention this year and seem to enjoy the process more. Maybe there's a correlation.

Posted by: CoCane | February 01, 2013 at 03:12 PM
Bottom line: recruiting is a way to occupy the fandom's time until football season comes.
I care about productivity: wins, losses, and statistics to prove that we're going in the right direction.
Despite having one of the worst defenses in the country and in the history of UM, this team almost nabbed 9 wins. They also won the Coastal, and had a shot at playing for the Orange Bowl in year two under Golden.
We addressed the glaring need at tight end and got our QB. We need defensive help, and we're getting some.
That's why I'm positive.
The more important question is: Can Coley coach to the level of Fisch?

Been looking for a life time but got three on the fence,
It'd be nice for once to get one to commit,
Oh lord, won't you give me the pill to Chill!

Posted by: longtimecanefan | February 01, 2013 at 02:59 PM
Definitely agree that DL is the priority right now but I have to say that OL is a necessity, not a luxury. As it's been said in the past, "It all starts and ends in the trenches."
Could you imagine what Jacory could've done with a decent OL the year we went 9-4, the same year he got sacked a record number of times (I think the number was around 40 or 50) and banged up God know how many other times? We could've been a one-loss team that year if he wasn't running for his life the entire game.
GO CANES!!!

What would you say if I told you I have unnamed sources who know that the 'wife' Golden keeps saying can't stop raving about loving living in Miami was really just his college roommate with a Skype account sporting a picture from a former PSU cheerleader skimmed off of failbook as the profile icon and that's why he won't let Golden take another job because the worst coordinator in Hurricane history knows he won't be allowed to tag along for the ride to faded SEC powers like Tennessee dg?

*"They might have told him it was getting a little tight for them or he needed to give them an assurance, but he wasn't ready to do that," Harris Jr. said.
- That is fine, there is no problem with DK's stance (IMO). And the fact that he was "man" enough to make the decision to not give assurance, AL had to take a stance as well.
*Harris Jr. said. "But we told them -- told assistant Micheal Barrow -- we felt strongly he was going to go there. He just had to go through the process and make sure he was going to go there."
- So he wasn't sure he was choosing Miami (though the BTW coaches did), and everyone is upset the the school moved on? Really?
*Maybe, Canes coaches thought Kirkland wasn't going to Miami (maybe new offensive coordinator James Coley had some better insight into the situation).
- Who'd of thought?
*And that's where the confusion lies on Booker T.'s side. Ice Harris trusted his word to Barrow was good enough, that it was infiltrating the offices at UM and that the offer Kirkland had wasn't going to vanish. He still trusts Barrow, insisting he's " a great guy and the way he recruited his players is the right way." Ice Harris said his conversation with Barrow Friday morning "went well" and both sides are "trying to smooth things over."
- Harris SR dropped the ball on this one.

SHEEZ! This guy again:
"After Golden and his staff walked out the door Thursday, Harris said Jimbo Fisher and FSU was waiting to talk to Kirkland."

Ice Harris is doing his best Manti Teo impersonation - he is either lying or stupid. If UM has visited you dozens of times and asks you to (silent or otherwise) commit or loose your scholly a week before NSD, then you commit - period.

Miramar requests that ALL LOI's be turned in to the school by today, 5 days before NSD. The only one that arrived for Grace was from Coral Gables.
