Lord, there's more action on this board over recruiting than on game day!

Time will tell what AG has going on here. My GUESS is the that they have someone on the D side they feel they can get, and another OL isn't going to make a big difference.

Or to be simple, they just got tired of the games and moved on to someone else...

Barry Jackson's take from the Sports Buzz:

02/01/2013
UM recruiting update with Signing Day looming; NFL media column

Five days before National Signing Day, here’s the most stunning factoid about UM’s recruiting class: The Canes have as many commitments from players who grew up in Nigeria as they do from recruits who attended high school in Dade or Broward.

As one clever fan cracked to Manny Navarro on Twitter, UM is putting up a wall.

Around Nigeria.

But seriously… the fact that UM has snagged only two local kids – defensive backs Artie Burns and Jamal Carter – is eye-opening and a bit disconcerting at this late date. That’s not to say UM’s class is inferior. There are some very good players in this group of 12 – quarterback Kevin Olsen, Burns, defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammed and tight ends Beau Sandland and Standish Dobard.

But UM needs to close with a flourish.

That’s why many will question UM’s decision to pull its scholarship offer to Denver Kirkland after Kirkland refused to accept what amounted to a take-it-or-leave-it offer on Thursday.

Kirkland, ranked ninth nationally among offensive tackles by rivals.com, is universally rated higher than the three offensive linemen who are orally committed to UM: Alex Gall, Hunter Knighton and Sonny Odogwu.

Booker T. Washington coach Tim Harris, who used to work for UM, reacted angrily; check out Manny Navarro’s UM blog for details.

Harris didn’t go as far as to say it would hurt UM’s chances of luring Matthew Thomas, one of the nation’s top linebackers, but you have to wonder.

A quick Canes update with signing day approaching:

### Defensive tackle: Considering Miami's need for impact d-tackles, it will be a disappointment if UM can’t lure either Jaynard Bostwick or Keith Bryant. But Bryant has said Miami is trailing FSU and South Carolina, and Bostwick has a strong relationship with the Gators’ defensive coaches and will spend the weekend visiting UF.

UM still believes it has a real chance with Bostwick, but the Hurricanes are no longer a favorite here. At best, it’s a tossup for the Port St. Lucie tackle. And Alabama isn’t out of the question. If Bryant reverses course and picks UM, it would be a major surprise.

UM has a decent chance of grabbing defensive tackle Terrell Brooks, a junior college All-American in Texas this season. But his coach told me tonight that he’s not sure what Brooks will do, and that Kansas State and Baylor also are in the mix.

### Running back: As long as UM gets either Alex Collins or Augustus Edwards, the Canes will be content. But it would be troublesome if they don’t get either.

Collins’ coach, Doug Gatewood, told both me and Manny Navarro today that he isn’t pushing Collins to Arkansas, contrary to Internet chatter. He said "I don't think Alex knows" what to do. That gives him only the weekend to choose among UM, Arkansas, UF and Wisconsin before he announces on Fox Sports at 10 p.m. Monday.

Gatewood denied a report that Collins has cut the field to just Miami and Arkansas, but it would be a surprise if he doesn’t end up at one of those two schools.

Meanwhile, Edwards told Rivals.com tonight that he no longer ranks FSU ahead of UM and has both schools about even heading into his Coral Gables visit this weekend.

### Linebacker: FSU always has been confident about landing Thomas, but UM and Alabama remained strongly in the mix as of Thursday. But it remains to be seen whether Thomas is influenced by the Hurricanes’ spurning of Kirkland…. Louisville and Tennessee are making a hard push for Miramar’s Jermaine Grace, but it would be a mild surprise if he doesn’t pick UM.

### Receiver: Stacy Coley, the only receiver that UM really covets, hasn’t tipped his hand, but is said to be strongly considering UM, FSU and USF. Mississippi also has drawn consideration. His coach said he loved his USF visit this past weekend.

### Tight end: With Jeremy Kerr switching his commitment to FSU, UM has an opening for a third tight end in this class and is targeting Virginia-based Ryheem Lockley, who will visit this weekend. UM and UF appear the top contenders, according to canesport.com, but Lockley likely will spend this fall in prep school. Miami also has resumed speaking to Indiana-based Nate Wozniak, who also can play offensive tackle.

GO CANES!!!

UMike

calGary..I agree...BUT..IF he so torn up about it and really wants to come to Miami, I find it hard to believe the coaches would accept him.

herbieibis

You have to remember guys, Al's only been at this big time recuiting stuff for a couple of years. He's still like a kid in a candy store, who can't understand his good fortune.
UMike, I feel ya pain dog! Every year someones telling me to take a chill pill too! If Kirk would of just said coach I'm going to "DA U" but don't tell know one then I'm sure they wouldn't of had to come up with a lame excuse to yank his paper, if that is indeed the way it went down. I'm sure they're are at least 3 of those boys, who will have Goldie waiting until signing day to know if we are the chosen ones! They have that opportunity but kirkland doesn't?
We also have about 3 or 4 guys verballed that we probably could have gotten anyway, if al else failed.

This is why I take everything Barry Jackson has to say with a grain of salt.

Is he actually listening to Keef? Keef's been lying to everyone for months now. A day after he said this, he posted something along the lines of "All about them Canes"

RBLCane

No matter how you put it, something doesn't add up here and there's gotta be more to this story than what's been published.

There are a bunch of players inferior to Kirkland who have either verbally committed to or are still considering us and hence getting more courteous treatment than Kirkland (players without a Matthew Thomas as a teammate mind you).

It doesn't make sense that UM would do what Harris is alleging given the numerous potential repercussions when it could have easily pulled an inferior recruit's offer instead (as has happened in the past under both Golden (Belen Jesuit's Menocal) and Shannon (MNW's Todd Chandler).

Something just doesn't add up here.

Because you hired your college roommate to be the worst coordinator that your current employer has ever had and won't fire him for his lack of performance?

Good to see the herb is lighting the Miami Golden strain today for all our enjoyment. I thought he was moving on to 2014 for his own mental health though? Don't say we didn't try to keep you above this fray before the fact herb, the 'Space tried to do right by you before it got crazy at the NSD finish line! You should have listened to your friends on the 'Space herb!

The Dude got me to LOL this morning too.

I just want to understand this, sir. Every time a thunder is micturated upon on this fair blog, I have to compensate the owner?

j.w.

Damn, love and hate recruiting at the same time. FWIW, I don't think the Kirkland saga was handled well at all, too many hurt feelings. Not saying this is all on UM, but communication appears to have been lacking on this one.
On to the next one- Barry Jackson's concerns are realistic, and he is in the business of selling papers, so you can't really expect him to say "don't worry, everything is going to be fine." having said that, my advice is don't worry, everything is going to turn out fine. :)

Sean Spence is a Beast!!!

Jermaine Grace is doing the same thing but nobody seems to be annoyed by it. Shiit, didn't he change his announcement date like a thousand times and at one point solid to commit to Miami but is now looking like it's a two team race along with L'ville.

Point is, we have time to wait for kids like KB who trolls around with fans and Grace who is in the same boat as DK and yet most of you blast the kid for waiting until nsd, it doesn't make sense, i know we all love the U but there's no way to spin this story.

Ya'll can keep saying he shouldn't have waited this long, in the end he did it the right way we have all wished a kid would do to his recruitment.

Face it, that hat trick isn't going anywhere and a 17 yr old kid will always be a 17 yr old kid, he ain't the last that would do it. Accept the games of recruiting coz' it is here to stay.

SSIB, the difference between Kirkland and Grace is... wait for it... Grace is already a silent commit. Has been for a while.

They wanted Kirkland to commit NOW. Not publicly, but just to them. He could still have his day on TV, give his school the TV time, etc. He didn't want to, so we moved on instead of getting left at the altar.

Like I said, boys and girls, it's the week of NSD! LOL! Believe none of what U hear, and only 10% of what U see! LOLOLOL

Sean Spence is a Beast!!!

Ok, granted that's true so what is the whole point of switching announcement dates? Regardless of dates, he would've been on TV or radio whatever anyways. That alone can get into a coaches skin as well, whether he is silently committed or not. Remember, commitments are non-binding and kids mind could change in a heartbeat so it's not like he is a sure thing either.

Why can't we respect the kid for wanting to keep us in the top 3 and wait until nsd? I mean if they ain't sure about DK signing on wednesday then have a plan B, shiit, i'm sure there are a lot of Juco ranked players who would love to sign with us at the very last minute regrdless if they've seen the campus or not. After all, we pretty much have chosen a juco in place of DK so what is there to lose?

Ohio_Cane

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to pass this situation off as good. For those who don't follow things much, or just listen to the radio/Ice/Luther, it looks horrible for Golden and staff.

I'm saying the reasoning and outcome because of this situation will be a good one.

Sean Spence is a Beast!!!

86, much respect to you but not every canes fans will have the same opinion or say in things.

We are just concern, we are not against anyone especially Golden. I love our coach and what he does.

However, this situation is bigger than most people think and i'm hoping everything we'll be fixed sooner than later.

We all can't just agree to 'We all bleed orange and green' and 'Trust the tie' or the '5>3>2 argument so everything will take care of itself coz' we have a legend and we are the U'.

Times have changed so we need to take care of relationships, especially to local community! It is what makes the University of Miami and it's not just the alumni.

j.w., I've been playing catch-up since all the Hawaii catfishing jokes got stale on me before I could capitalize properly on them, so I appreciate The Dude leaving easy spares for me to convert to compensate with. Something that is quite obvious to me...

The same way Porter, Linder & Henderson announced they were staying to give the "U" some positive press & vibes. The large number of UM targets to announce on signing day is being set up for the same purpose. I believe this is by design. Imagine the momentum created by 1/2 dozen top notch recruits choosing the "U" on NSD. All of the analyst will on our dikk, swearing the "U" is coming. ON A NATIONAL TV AUDIENCE.

This is precise planning by Golden & his staff. WATCH

Tyrone Moss' Browns Career Lasts a Week

May/09/07 11:47 AM Filed in: Tyrone Moss

Just a couple of days ago, the Akron Beacon-Herald was suggesting that Tyrone Moss could work his way into the Browns' running back rotation as an undrafted free agent., and Moss was comparing himself to Jamal Lewis.

Sure, he ran an unimpressive 4.75 40-yard dash, but the thought was that he was a very solid back at Miami before some injuries, so maybe he could be an interesting power back. He had been considered by many draft guides as a potential late-round pick heading into the draft.

Well apparently he looked worse than awful in the Browns rookie minicamp. Without a chance to ever put on some shoulder pads, Moss was cut on Tuesday.

dg

I'm baffled that a lot of you say "Trust Al Golden". What has he done to even allow that thought to think about crossing your mind? alot of worry over an OL.....when we really need some DT's and DE's.....

Can you imagine the impact if instead of Seantrell (a good player) we had gotten a few decent D lineman? I would offer we'd have won more games as a result of it than we ended up with.

Great OL are a luxury. DL are what win games....

I wish the kid best of luck, but what I'm looking for is players who are ready to play for the U and not become a storyline before they even show up.

Bottom line: recruiting is a way to occupy the fandom's time until football season comes.

I care about productivity: wins, losses, and statistics to prove that we're going in the right direction.

Despite having one of the worst defenses in the country and in the history of UM, this team almost nabbed 9 wins. They also won the Coastal, and had a shot at playing for the Orange Bowl in year two under Golden.

We addressed the glaring need at tight end and got our QB. We need defensive help, and we're getting some.

That's why I'm positive.

The more important question is: Can Coley coach to the level of Fisch?

Well damn, everybody is catching the herbitis

This is for Janice:
Oh lord, won't you find me a defensive tackle
Been looking for a life time but got three on the fence,
It'd be nice for once to get one to commit,
Oh lord, won't you give me the pill to Chill!

Great OL are a luxury. DL are what win games....

Definitely agree that DL is the priority right now but I have to say that OL is a necessity, not a luxury. As it's been said in the past, "It all starts and ends in the trenches."

Could you imagine what Jacory could've done with a decent OL the year we went 9-4, the same year he got sacked a record number of times (I think the number was around 40 or 50) and banged up God know how many other times? We could've been a one-loss team that year if he wasn't running for his life the entire game.

GO CANES!!!

What would you say if I told you I have unnamed sources who know that the 'wife' Golden keeps saying can't stop raving about loving living in Miami was really just his college roommate with a Skype account sporting a picture from a former PSU cheerleader skimmed off of failbook as the profile icon and that's why he won't let Golden take another job because the worst coordinator in Hurricane history knows he won't be allowed to tag along for the ride to faded SEC powers like Tennessee dg?

*"They might have told him it was getting a little tight for them or he needed to give them an assurance, but he wasn't ready to do that," Harris Jr. said.

- That is fine, there is no problem with DK's stance (IMO). And the fact that he was "man" enough to make the decision to not give assurance, AL had to take a stance as well.

*Harris Jr. said. "But we told them -- told assistant Micheal Barrow -- we felt strongly he was going to go there. He just had to go through the process and make sure he was going to go there."

- So he wasn't sure he was choosing Miami (though the BTW coaches did), and everyone is upset the the school moved on? Really?

*Maybe, Canes coaches thought Kirkland wasn't going to Miami (maybe new offensive coordinator James Coley had some better insight into the situation).

- Who'd of thought?

*And that's where the confusion lies on Booker T.'s side. Ice Harris trusted his word to Barrow was good enough, that it was infiltrating the offices at UM and that the offer Kirkland had wasn't going to vanish. He still trusts Barrow, insisting he's " a great guy and the way he recruited his players is the right way." Ice Harris said his conversation with Barrow Friday morning "went well" and both sides are "trying to smooth things over."

- Harris SR dropped the ball on this one.

SHEEZ! This guy again:

"After Golden and his staff walked out the door Thursday, Harris said Jimbo Fisher and FSU was waiting to talk to Kirkland."

Quit being a "straw-man".

Seems not many fans here trust the Three Headed Monster.

UMike

In that same article the BTW coaches say they told UM they felts strongly Kirkland would sign with UM..and then go on to say that FSU was Kirklands leader for a long time lol

laquinton

they expressed delivered jermaime graces loi to his school ? can they do that.. ? golden aint playing.. ! don't like what went on with Kirkland but its over and nothing we can do. just hope it was worth a top notch dt that can contribute either his first or second year also hope this doesnr affect mt6

Hassan

Golden is changing recruiting by UM in SFLA, you get on board the train or you get left at the station.

Ice Harris is learning to fall in line.

UMike

LA3

Of course he is visiting LSU....And I bet gets some rides to Superbowl or Superbowl related events. Great weekend to close to BIG EASY!

BigWindyCane1

Ice Harris is doing his best Manti Teo impersonation - he is either lying or stupid. If UM has visited you dozens of times and asks you to (silent or otherwise) commit or loose your scholly a week before NSD, then you commit - period.

Ohio_Cane

In case U didn't believe me about Grace being a Cane:

Miramar requests that ALL LOI's be turned in to the school by today, 5 days before NSD. The only one that arrived for Grace was from Coral Gables.

Hassan

Umike there has been a lot going on. AG is that dude, he is like a Texas Holdem Champion that is all I will say...

Ohio is correct and of course this kid has been a Cane since birth so no surprise.

Our DL is going to get turned around fast.
