When the bully comes to town, and constantly beats you down, eventually U have to fight back. The mighty Duke basketball team has been the ACC's big bully for a long, long time.
But on Wednesday night, Miami finally decided to fight back and gave the bully a taste of its own medicine. The Hurricanes opened one man-sized can of whoop ass and in a epic beat down of major proportions just totally trashed Duke by 27 points: Miami 90, Duke 63.
With a steady roar coming from the sea of orange and green behind the visitors' basket, No. 1-ranked Duke had a tough time making a shot.
The Blue Devils went more than 8 minutes without a field goal in the first half Wednesday night, and a sellout became a blowout for No. 25 Miami, which delighted a boisterous crowd with a 90-63 victory.
The defeat was the third-worst ever for a No. 1 team, and Duke's worst in nearly five years.
Durand Scott scored a season-high 25 points for the Hurricanes, and Kenny Kadji added a season-high 22. Shane Larkin had 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and Durham, N.C. native Julian Gamble had 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.
Miami (14-3, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat a No. 1 team for the first time, taking control with a stunning 25-1 run midway through the opening half. The Blue Devils missed 13 consecutive shots despite numerous good looks, while four Hurricanes hit 3-pointers during the run that transformed a 14-13 deficit into a 38-15 lead.
The bottom line is that on Wednesday night, the #25 ranked University of Miami men's basketball team completely dominated #1 ranked Duke.
Yeah,I see that smile on your face.

NCAA inspector GAVE PEREZ QUESTIONS TO ASK HIM regarding the NCAA investigation.
Perez may be disbarred from what I've read, and NCAA will probably offer Canes some weak sanctions with "time served" (bowl bans already taken, etc) hoping this will all go away.

Am I mistaken, or does Miami NOT currently have a QB coach?

UMike, pretty sure Coley will take that role over just like Fisch had done.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 24, 2013 at 02:07 PM
Looks like he should be the WR coach too...
An assistant at Miami High from 1998 to 2000, Coley coached future NFL players Roscoe Parrish and Andre Johnson. He then served as offensive coordinator at Miami Norland when wide receiver Dwyane Bowe and the Vikings won a state title in 2002.
He was then a grad assistant at LSU under Nick Saban for two years before moving on to the Miami Dolphins with him for two more years.

I wouldn't be shocked by disbarment, but you'd be surprised what a lawyer can do and still just get suspended.
But a thought just occurred to me in the shower: it does look like the NCAA guy's purpose here was specifically to circumvent the NCAA's lack of subpoena power. If anything Perez did DOES rise to the level of some sort of crime, that may make the NCAA a conspirator. I think it's fair to say that the NCAA does not want even the slightest chance that they (or their investigator) get indicted for a a conspiracy to commit even the mildest of crimes.
So I think this thing goes bye-bye, and fast.

Typepad ate my post but it was:
Coke, those six schollys are going to have a few of them eaten by the NCAA regardless what Pee Wee evidence gets tossed here, then we just have to trust The Pimp to add to his stable judiciously. I like that freshman 7 footer, great defensive help awareness, very active feet, looked like he had a great future last night as he held his own against Plumlee.
The moment you first kick the neighborhood bully in the nuts, punch him 27 consecutive times in the face, drop him to the pavement with a broken nose and looking at the result of his bloody lip while you spit on him and tell him that things are going to be different around here between you and I from now on is so great to relish that I'm not even letting a flaccid hire of an underachieving OC to replace the best UM's had since Chud steal the shine from it for me.

Anytime Duke gets gets smashed is a great day. I feel about them in basketball as I do about N. dame in football.
What do Jedd & James have in common, neither was a household name as an O-Coordinator. the big difference is Coley is a very good recruiter. Now for all you recruits on the fence about us and FSU, lets take a look: except for one or 2 coaches, Dawsey & Haggins, the rest are all new. That's not what I call stability, more like mass Mutiny! This is the team on the rise, so don't miss the boat, Bryant, Thomas, Coley and Kirkland, you 4 who we weighing between us and those zeros.
I just hope Coley is a good QB coach, that position is what makes or breaks a team.
The NCAA is nothing more than a itch to us right now, nothing that we can't scratch and feel better! HA HA!

Calling a person in for a one case and asking them questions on another is at the same level as breaking attorney/client privileges. There is no way that she is not disbarred - it would set a really bad precedent if she isn't disbarred.
The other item is other lawyers in the investigation team, if they knew anything about such a scam would have to report her as well. I think that's why the ex-president of the bar association said that the NCAA would not be doing enough just to throw out those bits.

I've been the absolute worst at making fun of FSU for their underperforming and pathetic play in big games. I'll still do that, and hopefully 86 will grant me the title of "favorite Nole hater." However, Jimbo ran that offense.

For those of you concerned about Shalala's letter to the NCAA, there are rumblings that she is ready to tell the NCAA that they can f**k off. I think if you know anything about Shalala's background, this sounds about right, despite some of her failings in regards to the football team in the past. UM now has all the leverage. The NCAA has actually made UM a sympathetic figure in the court of public opinion, and if they move forward with anything harsh in the way of accusations or allegations, it will be challenged, probably publicly (because what does UM have to fear at this point), at every step. In addition, the Feds are inevitably going to be investigating this whole matter because they get pretty serious when a third party (the NCAA) attempts to use federal resources/powers in a federal investigation to advance their own agenda. Mark my words, Emmert and his lackies will be deposed at some point by federal ivestigators, and anyone who is proven to have colluded in what amounts to defrauding the government, could do jail time. If these kinds of charges loom, you better believe people within the NCAA who were involved, especially those who have since been fired, will offer up their superiors in excchange for amnesty or reduced charges. Heads are gonna roll.

Golden: "We're excited about adding James Coley's leadership, expertise and passion to our staff and Miami Hurricane Football. I've been an admirer of his offenses output and execution, his commitment to student-athlete development. as well as his relentless approach to recruiting Dade and Broward counties."
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 24, 2013 at 03:48 PM
I can hear the recruiting pitch now to Thomas and Kirkland from Coley..."Guys, I was at FSU but the best opportunity for me was at Miami, which it is now for you too. And you can see how much I believe that Miami will not be hit by any additional NCAA sanctions by me taking this new job and leaving the cushy press box and my sipping on capri sun's for 4 hours on every saturday in the fall. In addition, I was making an easy $390K to gameplan, and decided to give it all up b/c I believe in Al Golden and where he is taking Miami. On top of that, I left my own alma mater for this new role. To top it off, FSU just lost 6 coaches and the program is in turnover mode due to the personel losses. This is a no brainer for all of us."
Posted by: Schweaty Balls | January 24, 2013 at 03:48 PM
CalGary- We need to hear from Florida attorneys to really know what Perez might be facing. Disbarments and suspensions are hard to get, as bad as her conduct appears to us, it isn't nearly as bad as violating the A-C privilege. It is possible that her conduct didn't violate the Florida Bar's rules of ethics.

Here's the Q & A from State of the U with a lawyer, in lay-person terms, for the most part.
Snip: "Q: Holy crap! How will everyone be penalized?
A: Well, Shapiro's lawyer will probably be disbarred. A court has already said she's incompetent, and now she's crooked too. Dave Barry articles have taught me that the bar for being a lawyer in South Florida is set pretty low, but this should be the end of the line for her legal career."

"The NCAA investigators who used Shapiro's
lawyers could face criminal penalties. They could be charged with obstruction of justice for interfering with a bankruptcy proceeding. Or they could be held in contempt of court, which allows judges broad discretion to penalize people who interfere with court matters. An NCAA employee could go to jail for his actions during the Miami investigation."
Yeap... I don't think that the US court of justice takes lightly to their powers being subverted!

I think some people just want to jump Donna any chance they get, without actually thinking it through and analyzing the facts objectively. I understand the criticism she gets on other issues, but the criticism she gets for this is not justified.
Anyone with any level of knowledge or sophistication in negotiations and public relations would realize this. The dirty work is done behind the scenes, the front stays calm, collected and sympathetic to the public. This has been handled extremely well by her.

This is good info, Ohio and CalGary. Still, I've seen a number of poor attorneys avoid punishment for questionable tactics. If the Bk court goes after them, all bets are off because losing your right to practice before a court isn't good for your standing in a state bar. But, will the Bk court take action? They may not really care, it doesn't affect them all that much. The media and college football's outrage is one thing, but did this really affect the USDC at all? I don't know the answer. Don't get me wrong, I hope they go after her, revoke her license, and make an example of her. But federal courts are extremely difficult to predict on issues like this.

Maria Elena Perez, who represents former Hurricane booster Nevin Shapiro, said she's
the NCAA's "patsy," as the governing body launches an internal probe into its UM investigation.
She did say the NCAA paid her a small amount of money for her services but did not consider herself a member of its legal team.
You are toast!

If Perez was my client I'd be telling her to shut her mouth! It's embarrassing that she graduated from UM Law!
Karma is a byotch!
Go 'canes!

These last 48 hours have been like the ending of The Return of the King. The tower bearing the Eye of Sauron...aka the NCAA investigation crashing with a resounding roar. The ground opening up to swallow the trolls and orcs (both online and at rival campuses).
Thus begins the Third Age of Miami Hurricanes Football.

McGinnis, what's Fred Smoot got to do with FSU?
Posted by: CaneRock | January 24, 2013 at 10:55 PM
Smoot has already had his share of "news" over the years (ie Viking sexboat scandal), but he's not from a FL school. He's a Miss. St. Bulldog.
Back to discussion about the U, as if there hasn't been enough to discuss the last two days....

Suriya McGuire hit a game-winning layup after a magnificent spin move in the lane with just 5.3 seconds remaining, giving the Hurricanes a 79-78 win over Wake Forest Thursday night at the Joel Coliseum.
McGuire twice gave the Canes (14-5, 5-3 ACC) a lead in the game’s final 32 seconds, but none more clutch than her game-winner, her second of the season. The first came against then No. 6 Penn in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. In the end, the Minneapolis native had a career-best 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Thirteen of her points came in the second half.
The Canes led by as much as 13 points with less than nine minute to play, but a 17-4 Wake Forest run over the next 4:23 tied the game at 69. For the remainder of the contest, the teams traded baskets, with McGuire hitting Miami’s final two shots.
Seniors Shawnice Wilson and Stefanie Yderstrom had big first halves for Miami, on their way to 14 and 12 points respectively. Fellow senior Morgan Stroman had 10 points and a team best six rebounds.

Per the Sun Sentinel, for Ms. Perez, any publicity is good publicity! Too bad she's not much of a poker player, because she's been stripped down to her panties, with NCAA holding her skirt and Ms. Shalala is still fully clothed, with perhaps her blouse undone. Imagine that ;) (or maybe not)
