Fear The Spear! That is what we always hear from the FSU faithful.
Oh yes, we are certain that it is a very proud and popular saying all around the Florida State campus in Tallahassee. That flaming, well you know, spear thing that they always like to throw around.
But probably not so much in South Florida. At least not so much anymore.
Which is exactly why University of Miami head coach Jim Larranaga and his men's basketball team sent a brief and personal message to the FSU team:
Take your spear, flaming and all, and just stuff it!
Your Miami Hurricanes confiscated and then destroyed any remaining and flaming spears that the formerly mighty Noles may have had left after losing their best recruiter and offensive coordinator James Coley to the UM football team and Hurricane head coach Al Golden just last week.
Here is how the flame went out tonight at the BankUnited Center:
Trey McKinney Jones scored 15 points Sunday for the Miami Hurricanes, and the Atlantic Coast Conference leaders won their seventh game in a row by beating Florida State, 71-47.
The blowout victory before a capacity crowd was the second in a row for the 25th-ranked Hurricanes, ensuring a significant jump in Monday's poll. They drubbed No. 1 Duke on Wednesday.
Miami (15-3, 6-0) is off to its best start in the conference, alone atop the standings, and is 9-0 at home. Florida State (11-8, 3-3) fell to 0-3 this season against ranked teams.
The Seminoles endured repeated long scoring droughts against Miami's man-to-man defense and shot a season-low 31 percent, the fourth time in the past five games they've been under 42 percent. Their starters went 7 for 26 and totaled 19 points.
Miami has not allowed an opponent to shoot better than 50 percent from the field this season. Michael Snaer went 2 for 5 and was held to four points, 10.5 below his average. The Seminoles went 3 for 17 from 3-point range.
McKinney Jones had three 3-pointers for the Hurricanes, who went 8 for 22 from beyond the arc. Durand Scott and Kenny Kadji scored 11 points apiece, and Shane Larkin had eight points, nine rebounds and six assists. The Hurricanes had a 44-32 rebounding edge and outscored the Seminoles 15-2 on second-chance points.
Tonight's Game News and Notes:
The attendance for tonight's game was 7,972. This is the first time in program history that there have been back-to-back sellouts at the BankUnited Center.
The starters for Miami were Shane Larkin, Durand Scott, Trey McKinney Jones, Kenny Kadji and Julian Gamble.
Miami starts conference play 6-0 for the first time in school history, dating back to the 1991-92 season when UM joined the BIG EAST Conference.
UM is on a seven-game winning streak for the first time since the Canes won eight-straight in 2009-10. That season UM went on to a 15-1 record to start the season before dropping four-straight ACC games.
Miami held Florida State to 47 points. This is the fifth time this season that Miami has held opponents to 50 or fewer points, most recently on Jan. 13, 2013 against Maryland (47).
The Canes held FSU's shooting to 30.8 percent from the field. The Canes have held 30 opponents to less than 41 percent from the field under Coach Larranaga, including 14 of 18 this season.
Ohio..is that kid a JUCO? His commitment status shows he signed a LOI lol

Yes, he's JUCO. Committed to Baylor right now. I did a quick search and posted that when I saw it.
Don't know much about him, but believe he visited when Kamalu did last week.

This Ray Lewis story is so dumb.
Why would RL need a middle man, to buy something He could've anonymously bought on Amazon.

Ohio Cane, malik Price commited the other day, he has had an offer for awhile now.
orsicana (TX) Navarro High School DT Terrell Brooks hosted a pair of Kansas State assistant coaches this morning at his house, and then coaches Al Golden and Jethro Franklin arrived to make their pitch for why he should be a Hurricane.
"The Miami visit went perfect," Brooks said. "It couldn't have gone any better. Just having the head coach come to my house and sit down and talk with me, show their interest in me, it really gave me a good feeling."
Brooks said the coaches were at his house "for 10 or 15 minutes."
"They were talking about the opportunities I will have at Miami, how much I can impact their program, things of that nature," Brooks said.
Brooks says he will announce a decision on Signing Day at his junior college.
"I'll sit down, place my hats and pick the hat of where I commit to," he said.
He's choosing between Miami, Kansas State, North Texas and Baylor. He says he has one more hat left to buy - from Baylor.
He'll pick that up this weekend - he's taking an official visit there.
Brooks visited Kansas State last weekend and he took his UM visit the weekend of Jan. 18. He got married a day before the visit, but he doesn't count Miami as their honeymoon.
"We'll take a separate honeymoon," he said.
Brooks says his new wife will attend the college he chooses. She's a scholarship-level volleyball player, but Brooks says he's unaware if she'll land a scholarship at any of his final four schools.
The defensive tackle also says he already has a pretty good idea where he'll wind up.
"I've known for a few days - it was just by going over the pros and cons," Brooks said, adding that "I'm kind of nervous (for Signing Day), but I'm pretty sure of my decision."
Brooks also says Cane fans shouldn't read into the brevity of the UM visit to his house today.
"We'd already talked about everything we needed to, because I've been discussing everything with them already," Brooks said.
Brooks said of Franklin that "I love coach Franklin. He's a great coach. I think he can help me with that next step."
Asked if he has a message to Cane fans leading up to Signing Day, Brooks said, "I would say to the Hurricane fans that you all have to be there on Signing Day. I'm working out a whole little speech."

I dont mind the actually game be played in NY, but I do think it effects all the lead-up activities before the game. Not sure the community/fans would really get to enjoy it as much IF the wealthy was to bad.

Its 50's here today and the sun is out in Manhattan, and may even make it to 60 tomorrow. It would be fun for Super Bowl week in the city. The parties would be sick!

I agree..what I meant was IF the weather got bad it would really suck for those activities..then again..it could poor rain in Miami lol

Why would we talk to a kid who has signed a LOI?
Posted by: UMike | January 29, 2013 at 02:45 PM
Herb, the zone read shotgun spread had it's day under Meyer at UF, got reeled back in by Saban showing how you blitz the read exchange from the weak side to disrupt it with a large athletic linebacker and now it's back to pro style owning college football.
Get that gimmick off the field at UM and put Morris under center with a TE on the line with his hand on the ground and a FB/RB I backfield so as to not tip the play selection's run/pass designation at the line. Maintain the initiative, surprise, and the ability to dictate to the defense how you will attack them rather than how you will be forced to try to attack them by your opponent.
Miami isn't a talent deficient squad that needs to make their running game easily disrupted by a low risk for a defense blitz strategy in order to spread out the defensive backfield as much as possible to be able to move the ball. UM doesn't require that crutch and shouldn't be stupid enough to rely on it when they should have no problem moving the ball without it.

Got to disagree with you, Schweaty- playing the SB outdoors in NY is a bad, bad idea. There's a reason why the game is always played in warm weather or a a dome, and this has led to some great games over the last decade. But outdoors, at Met Life, in February? Eli Manning struggles playing there in regular season games, as do most QB's. Football in the snow is fun a few times a year, and I agree its part of the game, but not for the Super Bowl.

OGV, nothing wrong with the zone read.
If you remember Dukes longest gain from scrimmage against VT, that was a zone read play.

I dont disagree with what you are saying. I'm just saying everybody does it. Enough to say that everybody does it. Anyone who is serious about their respective sport, including many Hurricanes greats. Its not the only kind of drug being used either. USC, The SEC, Noles and Ohio State, all juicing. We have too. In LARGE numbers. I just think it is a part of the sport now. Keep in mind also, many of these leagues, like baseball had no rules against it for a long time. Or like the NFL, or the NCAA, they have rules, but they are a joke.
I also dont think some one like Barry Bonds or Brian Cushing or Clay Matthews are good because they juice. I think they are better because they juice.

As for Keef, all bets are off.
Equal chances of:
- Silent Cane
- Skipping college altogether and declaring for the NFL
- Signs with FSU, then pulls a Jacoby Brissett
- Working for Target security in four months
- Works as R. Kelly's stunt double
Good luck predicting him.

You may need to rethink the Ole Miss thing guys. While I do agree that its a little fishy of who they are getting all of a sudden, but my question to you guys is have you seen the women there? If you have never seen a game there, you need to go, its unreal the amount of hot chicks walking around, 9's and 10's everywhere. By FAR, #1 on my list, there is not even a close second. Texas, USC, FSU and Alabama are up there but do not come close to Ole Miss. And have you been to The Grove? I am not saying what they are doing is legit, but the fact is the right coach can recruit there and get good players with what they have in place.

True. Plus it is a marketing ploy - most people in February want to get out of the cold or potential cold and go to a warm place which equals longer staying time and more money spent

Good point, CGNC.
LB, Ohio (or anyone who knows) Why is everyone calling Bryant "Keef?" Isn't it Keith?
Posted by: j.w. | January 29, 2013 at 04:34 PM
Listening to some commentators for FSU and they brought up an interesting thing about Thomas, in that his Mom prefers he go to FSU. Apparently she loves her some Jimbo. They still only believe they have a slight lead for his services.
Has anyone heard that before? I had heard that about Bryant but not about Thomas.
