Fear The Spear! That is what we always hear from the FSU faithful.
Oh yes, we are certain that it is a very proud and popular saying all around the Florida State campus in Tallahassee. That flaming, well you know, spear thing that they always like to throw around.
But probably not so much in South Florida. At least not so much anymore.
Which is exactly why University of Miami head coach Jim Larranaga and his men's basketball team sent a brief and personal message to the FSU team:
Take your spear, flaming and all, and just stuff it!
Your Miami Hurricanes confiscated and then destroyed any remaining and flaming spears that the formerly mighty Noles may have had left after losing their best recruiter and offensive coordinator James Coley to the UM football team and Hurricane head coach Al Golden just last week.
Here is how the flame went out tonight at the BankUnited Center:
Trey McKinney Jones scored 15 points Sunday for the Miami Hurricanes, and the Atlantic Coast Conference leaders won their seventh game in a row by beating Florida State, 71-47.
The blowout victory before a capacity crowd was the second in a row for the 25th-ranked Hurricanes, ensuring a significant jump in Monday's poll. They drubbed No. 1 Duke on Wednesday.
Miami (15-3, 6-0) is off to its best start in the conference, alone atop the standings, and is 9-0 at home. Florida State (11-8, 3-3) fell to 0-3 this season against ranked teams.
The Seminoles endured repeated long scoring droughts against Miami's man-to-man defense and shot a season-low 31 percent, the fourth time in the past five games they've been under 42 percent. Their starters went 7 for 26 and totaled 19 points.
Miami has not allowed an opponent to shoot better than 50 percent from the field this season. Michael Snaer went 2 for 5 and was held to four points, 10.5 below his average. The Seminoles went 3 for 17 from 3-point range.
McKinney Jones had three 3-pointers for the Hurricanes, who went 8 for 22 from beyond the arc. Durand Scott and Kenny Kadji scored 11 points apiece, and Shane Larkin had eight points, nine rebounds and six assists. The Hurricanes had a 44-32 rebounding edge and outscored the Seminoles 15-2 on second-chance points.
Tonight's Game News and Notes:
The attendance for tonight's game was 7,972. This is the first time in program history that there have been back-to-back sellouts at the BankUnited Center.
The starters for Miami were Shane Larkin, Durand Scott, Trey McKinney Jones, Kenny Kadji and Julian Gamble.
Miami starts conference play 6-0 for the first time in school history, dating back to the 1991-92 season when UM joined the BIG EAST Conference.
UM is on a seven-game winning streak for the first time since the Canes won eight-straight in 2009-10. That season UM went on to a 15-1 record to start the season before dropping four-straight ACC games.
Miami held Florida State to 47 points. This is the fifth time this season that Miami has held opponents to 50 or fewer points, most recently on Jan. 13, 2013 against Maryland (47).
The Canes held FSU's shooting to 30.8 percent from the field. The Canes have held 30 opponents to less than 41 percent from the field under Coach Larranaga, including 14 of 18 this season.
Yup

Saturday night will be a good test. One thing to win at home another to win on the road against good competition.

Nice art. Soup! Game was fun to watch, ,ove seeing this team make the extra pass to the open guy, and going for the easy lobs/dunks rather than jacking contested jump shots. Fun team to watch. And I'll predict a 3 seed when all is said and done.

I'm hope the team isn't thinking the way the fans on the space is thinking. The only game that should be on their mind is the next game at VaTech. Have to play & beat them Wednsday before they can think about NC State saturday. I hope they're focused...

LOL, oh wow, the innuendo's flying in this one SOUP.
BTW, possibly the most famous Miami alumni in the world, The Great One, The Most Electrifying Man in Entertainment, The Rock, is your new WWE champion as of tonight in Phoenix so rest easy knowing the universe is spinning properly on its axis once again for the first time in a decade as a result.
No word on Rock laying the smack down on Terry Porter in the Fiesta Bowl after the PPV yet for an encore though unfortunately.

Coke, The Pimp obviously has their attention here, when you stress tenacious man to man defense and deny the perimeter and post entry passing lanes the way he has them do, the nightly effort required to employ that style will help ward off letdowns in concentration and overconfidence.
Now a cold shooting night will make you beatable any given game but if the communication and effort is there defensively, you'll still have a chance to extend the game and pull it out if the other team misses their stretch free throws. Just like when Hamilton made that his trademark in Coral Gables.

Miami had 19 assists as compared to Florida State's six, and UM only had eight turnovers compared to 12 by the Seminoles.
Kenny Kadji scored the first basket for Miami with 19:22 remaining in the first half. The Canes are now 5-0 when Kadji hits the first bucket.
Miami led FSU by as many as 11 points with 00:44 remaining in the first half leading 37-28 at halftime. Miami's lead stretched to 24 with 00:19 remaining in the second half on a dunk by Rion Brown.
Trey McKinney Jones led the Canes in scoring with 15 points.
Durand Scott added 11 points and four assists.
Shane Larkin finished with eight points, nine rebounds and six assists, making this his eleventh game with four or more assists. In back-to-back games, Larkin has had nine or more rebounds.
Julian Gamble recorded four blocks, tying his career high.
Kenny Kadji finished with 11 points. This was his ninth-straight game scoring in double figures, and he's done so in 15 out of 18 games this season.
Tonye Jekiri set a new career high with four points, besting his previous high of three, set on Dec. 18, 2012 against UCF.

"Keeping the Hand Strong."
Of course, anything that questions that sputtering ACC champ's (just for the record, is FSU now the standard for ACC football according to UM's coach or is that still the worst VT team this century?), uh, competitive fires works for me too.

Posted by: Hassan | January 28, 2013 at 01:18 AM
Man, the Canes are laughing at teams right now. If they can keep their collective feet on the ground, this team will be even scarier than the potential it has.
I've always loved watching Miami play basketball, but I am absolutely psyched about this year.

Great win by the Canes. Lot of momentum going forward. It's great to see what having a competent coach can do for a program. I was on here years and years ago saying that Haith was an absolute bum. Everyone kept saying "oh give him more time, he's a great recruiter." HA! Keep your pimp hand strong Coach L.

From what I understand..and I mentioned this a while ago..but recently read more about it..Collins HS coach has REALLY been involved with his recruiting. I read he was even on the radio in Arkansas. I could be wrong, but I think he has his mom pulling for UM and his HS coach constantly in his ear about every school BUT Miami. Hassan, Ohio..can anyone second that?
Posted by: UMike | January 28, 2013 at 07:02 AM
Umike-his coach sounds like the coach at Dwyer Jack Daniels who is a graduate of UF and sends his kids to every school but Miami..look how it worked out for Jacoby Brissett

Correct.

Gatewood, who has maintained long-term friendships with Bielema, Gran and Partridge through recruiting in his time as a coach in South Florida, said anyone who gets the idea he wants Collins to leave South Florida "is off base." He said he would love to see Collins play at Miami, but is staying out of the decision-making process.
"In the end, I'm just hoping to get an answer after these next two visits," Collins said. "It's not going to be easy. I'm going to have say 'No' to a few people on Feb. 6.'"

FROM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED:
If this were a criminal case, the judge would immediately declare a mistrial. How do you prosecute a party after admitting you acquired some evidence through nefarious means? Yet, this being Emmert's NCAA, the governing body has hired a corporate investigator, Kenneth L. Wainstein, to conduct a review. Emmert said the probe should take an estimated seven to 10 days -- two weeks tops -- at which point it will discard whatever information Wainstein decrees was obtained inappropriately (which Emmert says is a "small portion" of the overall evidence against Miami) and proceed with the case as planned.
Wow, what a credible process that will be. But then again, credibility has moved swiftly in the opposite direction of the organization's Indianapolis headquarters throughout Emmert's tenure at the helm.
Remember the Cam Newton "loophole?" That was a good one. How about Ohio State's Tattoo Five being allowed to play in the Sugar Bowl thanks to some obscure waiver? Thank goodness they protected the "integrity" of a game that was later vacated. Last year, in a shameless abuse of power, Emmert shucked any notion of precedent or protocol in doling out his own personal Penn State penalties. The state of Pennsylvania is filing a suit over that one. Meanwhile, last fall, an NCAA investigator was reportedly fired after her boyfriend blabbed to a fellow airplane passenger about her pursuit of UCLA basketball freshman Shabazz Muhammad (he was reinstated shortly thereafter), while a Los Angeles judge ripped the organization for its "malicious" treatment of former USC running backs coach Todd McNair (implicated in the Reggie Bush case).
But this Miami thing -- this one takes the cake.
