Today it was confirmed by the University of Miami that former UM player and coach Mario Cristobal was returning to his Alma Mater, this time as Associate Head Coach, Recruiting Coordinator and Tight Ends Coach.
Current TE coach Brennan Carroll will move over to make room for Cristobal and coach wide receivers for UM offensive Coordinator Jedd Fisch. Carroll will also relinquish his role as National Recruiting Coordinator to "Super Mario" who looks to us like he will be really busy at The U.
It was also announced was that former UM defensive lineman Kareem Brown would be joining Al Golden's staff at UM as a Graduate Assistant. Brown, as you may have guessed, will help UM DL coach Jethro Franklin coach the big uglies in the trenches. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL Draft. Brown was also a member of the New York Jets, New York Giants, and Tennessee Titans.
Cristobal returns to UM for the fourth time. As a player, he won two National Championships at Miami in 1989 and 1991 and then coached at UM twice before, once as a Graduate Assistant (1998-2000) and then again as Tight Ends Coach (2004-05) and Offensive Line Coach (2006).
During his time as tight ends coach at Miami, Cristobal coached two NFL Draft picks in Kevin Everett (3rd Round, 2005 NFL Draft) and Greg Olsen (1st Round, 2007 NFL Draft).
Cristobal also coached at Rutgers under former UM Defensive Coordinator Greg Schiano from 2001-2003 and was most recently the Head Coach just a few miles down the road at FIU. While at FIU he apparently turned down the head coaching job at Rutgers just last year when Schiano left the Scarlet Knights position to become the Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Bucs.
At FIU, Cristobal led the Golden Panthers to their first ever Sun Belt conference title in 2010 and their first ever winning record was accomplished during that season (7-6). He led FIU to two consecutive bowl games in 2010 and 2011, before being fired suddenly in 2012 over what were alleged to be professional differences with FIU Athletic Director Pete Garcia.
From his previous time at UM and his six years at FIU Cristobal has strong ties to the South Florida community and is widely known as a passionate coach and an excellent recruiter. His return to UM can only help Al Golden build a much stronger coaching staff and a significantly higher wall around the always fertile South Florida recruiting area.
We like that. Yeah, we like that a lot.
UM training room going from 3,500 to 13,000 sq ft? WOW!

Oh, we are ready for FSU & Flo.It may have to be a shootout. FSU will have a new QB and Flo. loses some key people off of defense. Then, alas, there is our defense, well like I said it 's probably going to be a shootout!

So you're telling us that Duke got 2,000 yards and 14 touchdowns (1 passing) with injuries and without a full workout regime? That is FRIGHTENING for opposing teams, especially with the manbeast Hagens and the o-line returning.

how good do you think Robinson is??? I heard he'll probably have to red shirt

I would guess he would redshirt too just by his weight. But he could put on some good weight by next fall.

I think Matthew Thomas could play safety. Kid is a freak. Reminds be of Brian Urlacher.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAy to early to make predictions about what the Canes record will be next season. If we can get our ol to dominate next season, offensively we should be very good. I have very little confidence in the D under Dno, however I am very optimistic.

canesteeler - you are right but I have been at 9-3 for so long I am bound to hit it sooner or later - LOL

On the BB team:
From the Winston-Salem Journal
CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina couldn’t stop Miami’s 3-point shooting at critical times Thursday night or handle its tall frontline most any time, and the Tar Heels suffered a second consecutive ACC loss.
Behind forward Kenny Kadji, Miami won 68-59 at the Smith Center, which kept UNC winless in conference play. Miami pulled away in the final 4:30, right after the Tar Heels chopped their deficit to 56-55 on a 3-point basket by P.J. Hairston.
Miami held firm by getting four shots on its next possession, starting with a missed 3-pointer by Durand Scott. Julian Gamble, a former Durham high-school player, grabbed the rebound and missed two follow shots, but stuck in a third for a three-point lead.
he Hurricanes then sealed the victory by making two 3-point shots, both from almost the same spot on the floor. Taking advantage of UNC defensive breakdowns and what Coach Roy Williams called miscommunication, Trey McKinney Jones hit from deep on the left baseline, and Scott hit from there 38 seconds later.
“We let Miami have too many open shots at the end,” Hairston said. “The good shooters had the ball. We wanted to get the ball out of the good shooters’ hands and play good defense down the stretch because we still had a chance with three minutes left.”

Good stuff, CGNC, thanks! I was so busy last week I didn't know we had hired Cristobal until 24 hours later, and would have forgot about the UNC game if it wasn't on at the gym.
Steeler- I'm with you, too early for a prediction from me, I want to see who is healthy, who steps up at LB, whether we get another RB to sign, and how many JC DL come in. Cautiously optimistic about this one. Last year I was right with a 7-5 prediction, I hope my prediciton this year includes more wins.
CGNC- got two opportunities on horses, now- one is a "free lease" (my best guess on exactly what this means is that I pay room and board, the rest is free), or a very good, broke mare for $2,500, who is a bit rusty but has an incredible lope. The free one is a gelding who knows very little other than her brakes, but tries real hard to learn. Tough decision, but it looks like opportunities are there for me.

I will always love U, and yes CGNC we had some good times with 9-3.
Breaking up is hard to do, but now it is time for some MaryLou and 10-2.
Speaking of MaryLou are U still out there?

Prediction 9-3 but it would be safer to make a prediction after NSD and spring training.

About f*cking time NCAA!
By the way, it wasn't so crazy after all to move an existing coach to WR was it 86? I still think they should have hired Sol, but Cristobal I am happy with.

3 weeks before NSD That is viscious, the NCAA is like the mafia, it's a fraud. They don't care to tarnish the dreams and hopes of innoncent student athletes. It's time to dismantle the NCAA universities presidents...
Posted by: Montreal-Cane | January 12, 2013 at 02:16 PM
Dude...I am happy with the hire also.
Ohio...I just saw that CaneInsider article flash across on Twitter re: the NOA coming within 72 hours. Funny that the NCAA waited until right before NSD, but UM is likely to appeal any findings so that actual penalty phase will not be for another 3-6 months.

One thing that folks may not know is that Kehoe and Cristobal did not always get along and will have to mend some relationships for this to work out well.
Posted by: 86Cane | January 12, 2013 at 02:21 PM
I did not know that fact 86...
Any idea what their disagreements stemmed from?
Posted by: roachcane77 | January 12, 2013 at 02:23 PM
FROM THE CANEINSIDER ARTICLE:
According to a source close to the University of Miami’s NCAA investigation, the University is expected to receive the Notice of Allegations (NOA) from the NCAA within the next 72 hours. Upon receiving the NOA the University will have up to three months to respond at which time they will go before NCAA infractions committee . According to the source, whom spoke under the condition of anonymity, the University can elect which of the allegations in the NOA to release publicly due to being a private institution. It is not likely the University will release the entire NOA to the general public and will elect to release certain aspects of the NOA that are believed to have already been a known allegation.

Roach...not sure exactly, maybe just their competitive natures. Both are VERY pssionate about what they do and tempers flare in practice. Obviously Golden would not have hired him unless they felt it would work so I trust him on this one.
Also, Mario could have gone to the Tampa Bay Bucs (Schiano) or Cleveland Browns (Chudzinski) but turned down more $$$ to coach at UM. Mad props to him for that!

So, the day is finally just about here. Very strange that they wouldn't release everything, but maybe that's just the source talking without knowing. These things are never going to stay quiet, and the NCAA will publicly release its findings after the hearing, so my bet is that we see the entire thing at some point in time. I'm glad the wondering is just about over, that is often worse than the NOA. I'm w
