A four-run first inning gave the Hurricanes an early lead they would not relinquish, as sophomore lefthander Chris Diaz (1-0) provided the hosts another strong start. With the win, Miami improved its season record to a perfect 5-0, including a 4-0 mark at Alex Rodriguez Park.
Leadoff hitter Tyler Palmer got the offense started early with a bunt laid perfectly down the third-base line. After junior Alex Hernandez was plunked by an offering from Milwaukee righthander Cale Tassi (0-1), senior Chantz Mack laid down another good bunt to load the bases.
Freshman David Thompson, who provided late-game heroics in Miami’s win over FAU Wednesday, then connected on a two-RBI double to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead. A hard-hit ball from junior Brad Fieger would add to the Panthers’ early struggles, as third baseman Sam Koenig’s error plated Mack from third.
Thompson would eventually score on an overthrow from catcher Will Fadness that found its way into centerfield. By the time Diaz returned to the mound to start the second inning, his team was already sporting a 4-0 advantage.
The Florida City, Fla., native did well to protect the lead, allowing only one run in his six innings of work. Despite scattering six hits, Diaz benefitted from a season-high four double plays turned by the Miami infield. Newcomers Brandon Lopez and Alex Hernandez, who have helped the Hurricanes soar to the top of the Atlantic Coast Conference in fielding percentage, were impressive up the middle once again for head coach Jim Morris’ club.
Hernandez helped Miami add two insurance runs in the inning, as his one-out single extended his personal hitting streak to five straight. After Hernandez advanced two bases on separate wild pitches, Thompson drove the junior in with his second double of the night, giving the Hurricanes a 5-1 advantage. Back-to-back, opposite-field singles from Fieger and Alex San Juan upped Miami’s lead to five runs.
Freshman Frank Grandinette was impressive once again in relief, throwing two scoreless innings. Senior Vince Kossak tossed a final scoreless frame, needing only eight pitches to get through the ninth inning.
The Hurricanes return to the diamond Saturday for the “Remembering Ron Fraser” Game at Alex Rodriguez Park. First pitch against Milwaukee is set for 7 p.m.

Thanks for the shout CaneRock, Whitlock is usually controversial but he calls it preety good here. Even Stephen A and Bayless see the bulls#*t with NCAA. Man I played NCAA football in the 70s, but times have changed and these tired old white men controlling young peoples futures is just plain wrong!!! I am a old white man, but not tired!!!! Stop harassing these young kids futures....many whom are black inner city kids who have dealt with enough BS!!! They need a foothold, they need a break, a chance!!
I know so many white people who do not know how these kids struggle, the different kind of life they live. I coach them and see it!!! Level the table for once, give these young people....who are our future a fair shake dammit!!!

Right on VA Cane, RIGHT...ON!
And not just disadvantaged kids, but they have NO IDEA! what these coaches have to deal with when recruiting, coaching, and mentoring these kids.
These clowns have NO IDEA! what goes on on the ground.
Hopefully with our case, the "chickens come home to roost" on their asses.

Anyone wanna bet Wake won't shoot 70% from 3 after half like they did in the 1st half?
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 23, 2013 at 01:50 PM
Hoop team has become too reliant on jump shots. 1-2 losses before March Madness is not a bad thing. This team will be fine.
Posted by: Canesteeler | February 23, 2013 at 01:50 PM
This performance has been coming. They've been playing like shyt lately. It ain't over but maybe they need to lose to understand you can't play like shyt & expect to win. Winning in spite of playing bad has made them complacent. I'd rather them lose to Duke. A loss to garbage azz WF would hurt our seeding...
Posted by: CoCane | February 23, 2013 at 01:52 PM
Not sure the defensive effort is there today especially in transition and it's very iffy that a redoubled effort in the 2nd half can cool off a hot shooting home team today.
Championship caliber teams can ratchet it up for the win in situations like this, we'll see what's up today.

Hassan I just read your post on the last blog. Awesome article and I think change is about to happen within the NCAA and if politicians become involved , the dirty secrets of college athletics will bring about drastic changes. Just think how football players in the SEC would feel after taking pay cuts to go to the NFL.
Posted by: Canesteeler | February 23, 2013 at 02:03 PM
OGV they were due for a poor performance.
Posted by: Canesteeler | February 23, 2013 at 02:04 PM
OGV..I was thinking the exact same thing. The effort on the defenisve end is simply not there today. Looks like TIRED legs?
I agree with Coke, this day was going to happen eventually, and today MIGHT be the day.
Miami cold on the road + Wake hot at home = Bad Medicine

Let's go Canes. Time for the comeback win but like CoCANE and others said above our Canes are due for at least one loss. Rather get it out the way now as opposed to March and hopefully April. Congrats to the baseball team for being undefeated so far.

This isn't just a random bad game resulting in a loss. This is the 3rd bad game in a row. Now it's a trend. The team & coach L were too satisfied after 2 games of crap. Let's see how they respond...
Posted by: CoCane | February 23, 2013 at 02:59 PM
Miami can't play that bad and expect to overcome ACC road team officiating. The Pimp is going to have to get his stable in line because they're looking rough these last couple of weeks.
Nothing like making money off cancer to buy off refs in your basketball league for college though. Ever since they've been ranked you can expect one ref any given game to be biased for UM's ACC opposition, one to be from generally clueless to just having a bad night and thus having to give a few makeup calls in the 2nd half to rectify a bad call net deficit toward them on his part in the 1st and one ref who tries to pull the other two dead weights toward an evenly called game before succumbing to failure by the final buzzer, at best.
Then there's what we'll have in the Duke game where every call and non-call by the refs will go to the home team and the announcers on TV will be basically holding blue and white pompoms while applying human foaming mouth spray to K's crotch for two hours along with the guys in stripes as well. That will be something.

OGV i just exchanged emails about it with assistant coach Caputo. The kids in question have been great all year but they tweet a bit too late prior to a 1:00 pm game. The coaches will get them refocused on what they can achieve.
The CBS broadcasters just love to put down Miami. Us against the world.

Shane Larkin had overlooked playin offense and the canes have overlooked shooting the ball in the past 4 games. Team has been playing like a top 50 team - not a top 5.
Posted by: BEERicane | February 23, 2013 at 05:41 PM
And if it's true they "overlooked" an opponent (sorry ass excuse lark) you deserve to get your ass beat in -- you did.
Bball team needs to set some modest goals for the game vs VT: 1. Hold green to under 35 and 2. Shoot over 40% (which is still pathetic but would be a drastic improvement of late)
