Over the years, since Canespace began way back in June of 2006, we have steadily become more than just your typical college sports blog.
We have been kicking bass and taking names for a long, long time now. As we have gone through the years we have learned that "community" matters as much as the score of the game, the season record or anything else.
We have traveled long and far to North Carolina and Fort Myers, Tampa, Jacksonville, deep into the heart of Gator Country in Gainesville and even to Tallahassee to see our Miami Hurricanes take on the Florida State Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium (football), Dick Howser Stadium (baseball) and The Civic Center (basketball) in the State's Capitol.
In fact, Canespace has become a family, a social club and group of people who do things together well beyond the scope of University of Miami athletic events. Sure hanging by your computer for 24 hours around National Signing Day is fun and all but believe me, there is life outside of those four walls surrounding you as you read this.
We strongly recommend that at least every once in a while that you get up, put down the texting device and go outside and play. Try it, you'll like it!
Since we started this blog a little over six years ago we have been white water rafting, scalloping, dining, partying, camping, fishing, traveling and site-seeing.
We have also participated in many other activities that most people who read the blog on a casual or even a regular basis have no idea is going on.
On Monday, February 25th long-time blogger Old Skool and myself went on another Canespace fishing trip in Central Florida on Lake Istokpoga near Sebring. And needless to say, we kicked bass!
So, again as usual, and as you can clearly see, a good time was had by all.
It is the Canespace way.
Yearby to the Canes at this stage is a good sign for South Florida recruiting.

If Barrow doesn't leave, yes, we have an excellent chance.

Absolutely.
I'd say "he's been a Cane fan all his life...", but that hasn't mattered much lately.

CANES WIN, CANES WIN!!
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 26, 2013 at 09:05 PM
It's not far-fetched to potentially get Yearby, Cook and Michel (assuming NCAA stuff doesn't get out of control), which would pretty much cover the desire to see Canes who don't mind competing (heck, Cook and Yearby already play on the same team) and show that the offense, at least, is already beginning to reload with lots of depth. Just want to see it happen before getting too excited. Still a long way til Feb, and there's a whole season of football to enjoy first.
Now, gotta hope the basketball team comes back together tomorrow night and takes down the Hokies. Again, I expect a closer than I'd like first half but a second half of playing better and pulling away, assuming Coach L. and the boys have things back on track again.

Nice win by the Canes on the diamond. Ohio got the results out already. Way to work, OC. Getting to be more fun again to be a Cane, although it's fun even in lean times!

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.
If Saban can get 4 top flight RBs in one recruting class, WHY NOT US!

Or...WHY NOT U$! :(
Posted by: CaneRock | February 26, 2013 at 09:12 PM
I don't think McGahee always liked backing up Portis, especially given how obnoxious Portis was about his superiority, but it all worked out okay (well, except for the game vs. OSU when he tore his knee up). Why not have RBs who push each other and help the team be great and the individuals go to the league?! The O appears to be turning a bit ahead of the D, but that's okay. The team starts winning......well, if you build it, they will come!
As for Saban, Canerock, he can offer (okay, maybe not him personally, but his school indirectly) $ now, while the U hopes it will be offered after the U playing days are done.

Huge upset in college basketball
Minnesota beating Indiana 77-73
Posted by: Montreal-Cane | February 26, 2013 at 09:20 PM
Yeah, MC. Minn took down IU, and it shows that there really isn't just one team that is clearly way above all others this year. There are at least 10-12 teams that are all capable of being #1, at least for a week!
Last night's non charge call with 5 sec. left on KU was one of the worst I've seen in years. It allowed them to tie Iowa State and then win in OT. Huge.

Michel and Yearby are RBs (speedy, shifty and change of direction bursts).
Cook could be a WR or Safety (straight line speed).

No. 20 Miami continued its winning ways Tuesday night, as a walk-off single from junior Alex Hernandez in the bottom of the ninth inning sent the Hurricanes to their eighth consecutive victory, this one over visiting St. Thomas University by a final margin of 5-4.
Hernandez’ hit capped off an impressive comeback for the Hurricanes, who were trailing most of the game. Senior Michael Broad’s two-RBI double in the bottom of the eighth tied the game at 4-4, while Hernandez’ single to right field with the bases loaded helped the Canes stay perfect in the ninth. The West Palm Beach, Fla., native extended his career-opening hitting streak to eight games in the win.
Tuesday’s midweek matchup saw the return of two veteran hurlers for Miami: junior southpaw Bryan Radziewski and senior righthander Eric Whaley. While they received different results on the mound Tuesday against the Bobcats, both pitchers are sure to factor heavily into Miami’s chances of success this season. Relievers Frank Grandinette, Vince Kossak, Enrique Sosa and AJ Salcines (2-0) pitched 5.2 innings in relief, combining for four hits and one earned run.
Miami improved to a perfect 8-0 on the season, opening their campaign with eight consecutive victories for the second straight year. The Hurricanes will battle visiting Barry University Wednesday at Alex Rodriguez Park before traveling to Gainesville, Fla., for a three-game set with Florida. First pitch Wednesday is set for 6 p.m.

Daaayuuum! I think our RB position is pretty strong already.I don't think 2 time Mr. Football Tennessee has ever been challenged at any level yet. Can't wait to see what he can do after a couple years behind Duke at the U.

From previous comments, Elder's going to end up at receiver.
I honestly think the tailback position in the 2014 class is extremely deep, and a fluid number.
I'm happy that Yearby decided with UM early, and that it could give us momentum in this class. However, until they put pen to paper... it's about as valuable as used toilet paper. Only the hardcore recruiters like Duke Johnson and Standish Dobard should be considered Canes before they sign. I haven't heard a name like that in this class so far.
The most important piece of news is the schedule, and it looks excellent.
Cons:
- Bye weeks aren't spread out.
- Playing Va. Tech and FSU back to back.
- Perhaps deceptively difficult?
Pros:
- Everything else
1. Our opener isn't against a conference opponent, and it gives a week to enter the flow of things.
2. Sun Life Stadium shouldn't be considered at all a homefield advantage, but it's great to see that UM won't leave the state of Florida until October 17th.
3. We should win at least three of our out of conference games by default.
4. The ACC is a severely weak conference. I don't expect Va. Tech to flounder for consecutive years, but getting an upper hand on a powerful program in a transition year was very good. There is no reason why we can't at least win 6 conference games and outright sweep the Coastal.
5. We don't play Clemson.
6. We also do not have consecutive road games.
I believe this team will play hard against the marquee names (Va. Tech, Florida, FSU). the crux of it all is on the coaching staff keeping this team focused on winning the Coastal and beating the teams they should (Virginia, USF, North Carolina, etc.).
An Al Golden UM team isn't used to this type of success. If they win like I think they are, it's unchartered ground for the staff.
Despite it all, there is absolutely no excuse for this team not to win at least 9 games. None... not with a top 10 QB, a returning offensive line, and the most dangerous player in the NCAA. This team has every opportunity to succeed.
So let's see it. Win.

It will. Same with Alin Eduoard. He's been out recruiting ever since he committed. He said there's a lot of talent that told him they're coming to The U, but he won't say to ruin their "moment in the spotlight"

Yearby's good, but I like Cook better, kid has some great breakaway speed.
Posted by: CaneRock | February 27, 2013 at 10:16 AM
The one person who I think will benefit the most from having this deep stable of running backs is Olsen. Coming off of a redshirt year, he won't be expected to carry the team since he should have Duke as a junior, Elder as a sophomore, Yearby coming in, and conceivably Michel coming in as well. This should alleviate a lot of the pressure that comes with being a first time starter.
Posted by: semperfi_cane | February 27, 2013 at 10:26 AM
Yearby and Cook are good, but i like Michel better! :)
Better yet, let's just have all 3 of em'!
I don't think it's really that farfetched!
Posted by: Sean Spence is a Beast!!! | February 27, 2013 at 11:00 AM
Good pick up in Yearby. I hope Sony doesn't get to caught up in his own hype. I've heard this been a canes fan my whole life a thousand times, only to commit to some other school. Now to the defensive side of the ball, we need to be securing some DL & LB early. Not waiting to offer guys in January. You have to figure next years class has to be weighted heavy on the defensive side. 4-DL, 3-LB and 3 to 4 DB's. We already have 4 verbs and of course that doesn't mean squat at this juncture but none of those, so far are defense.

"Coming off of a redshirt year, he won't be expected to carry the team since he should have Duke as a junior, Elder as a sophomore, Yearby coming in, and conceivably Michel coming in as well."
For now: Elder is at receiver, Lewis is at corner.
We certainly have room for two to three tailbacks. And I agree with you, Olsen is going majorly profit from redshirting.
He will have to compete with Ryan Williams! for the starting job.
In 2014:
- Clements will be gone.
- Duke and Dallas will be juniors.
- Dillard will be a sophomore.
- Edwards seems like a natural replacement for Hagens.
- The tight ends should be broken in. Sandland will be on his last year of eligibility.
- Hurns will be gone.
- Dorsett and Scott will be seniors.
- Waters will be a junior.
- Lewis should have a redshirt and be a sophomore.
- Depending on redshirting, Coley and Griffin will be either freshmen or sophomores (I think at least one will play immediately).
With good offensive line depth, this team has offensive weapons for years to come...
...now, about that defense...
Posted by: LB | February 27, 2013 at 11:46 AM
All things aside, we don't have one defensive commit for 2014. Maybe we should make a big board for targets and numbers by position.
Posted by: LB | February 27, 2013 at 11:49 AM
I think the DE position has been addressed with McCord, Hamilton, O'Donnell & Hoilet from last year. Ricardo Williams & Chickallo from the year before. Then we bring in Muhammad this year, so we're good at DE.
DT is where we need to tighten up. I think Kamalu will be a DT & a freak at 6'5 280 running a 4.6 forty. "IF" he's coached up. I also think we'll get elite at DT in 2014 with Clark, Moten & 1 or 2 more at that position.
Ohio Cane...
I'm pretty sure about us getting Moten & feel really good about Clark. What you think?

CoCane,
I don't know about you but 2 of the last three years we have wiffed at the DT position. Now, we have moved Grimble & Pierre to DT, both were ends coming in and we got Briscoe & Ivery at the very last minute a year ago. It shouldn't take no year to get 2 or 3 DT's secured, especially at the very last minute. I know Flo. is usually not stock piled with DT talent but we have to be one of the only schools out of what 122 that didn't get a legitimate DT recruit.
