How many times during a recruiting cycle have U heard this said about a certain high school football player: "He is a lock" to be a 'Cane, 'Nole or Gator? Well in this case, the term "Cane Lock" is very fitting and accurate.
Ryheem Lockley, an athlete from Saluda, VA became the newest addition to the University of Miami football program's 17-member 2013 signing class Tuesday, inking his National Letter of Intent.
The 6-foot-4, 220-pounds athletic speedster played on both sides of the ball for head coach Josh Franke at Middlesex High School. Lockley was rated a 3-star athlete by ESPN, 247Sports.com, Rivals.com and Scout.com. He ranked as the No. 55 athlete nationally by 247Sports.com.
Lockley finished his senior season with 1,034 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, while adding 598 receiving yards and eight scores. Defensively, he tallied 50 tackles with two sacks and one interception. His athleticism also translates well to the basketball court, as Lockley averages 30 points per game for the Middlesex High School basketball team.
Miami's 2013 signing class is ranked No. 17 in 247Sports.com's composite rankings and No. 21 by ESPN.
The Canes will kick off their spring practice schedule Sat., March 2 at the GreenTree Practice Field.

It might be the other way around, ala Clive Walford. I like the athleticism Lockley adds to the TE corp.

SOUP, reading AG's "Stand With The U" quote on the previous blog...I wonder if He used that on the recruiting trail...
If He didn't, He SHOULD! have.
Reminds me of those concession speeches by pols, that they should've used on the campaign trail.

I think Lockley still needs to get his SAT score up to officially come in the fall. He should have a couple more chance though, if he needs, given that it's still early in the year.
Unfortunately the 'turds are up on UKy by 18 with 4 min. left in the game. Looking like an easy win for them now. Later we have Mich vs. MSU. Lots of teams right behind the U will be breathing down their neck with wins, but I don't see the U giving up their position without losing. Road games are coming up with teams they should beat, but the road has been a bit tougher in terms of the easy victories. Fortunately, UVa will be at home, but this week gotta get by the Noles and Tigers first.

Weird and sad news from college hoops for those who remember the amazing 1979 Final Four with MSU (Magic), ISU (Bird), DePaul and U Penn (maybe the biggest final four underdog entrant over the years other than Larranaga's George Mason U a few y/a):

Nice ESPN article on the Canes basketball team:

Mich. State is about to finish beating up on soon to be former top 5 Mich., with just under 10 min. left and a 23 point lead.

Still dumfounded--could of had Solinger--could of had a great HS coach for recruiting-BUT got a DB!!!

Had me scratching my head a little, too.
Posted by: 360Cane | February 12, 2013 at 11:40 AM
Me too!! I really hope AG is able to use Sol in a way that doesn't require him to put so much of his time into recruiting. I recall 86 posting that Sol doesn't care much to kiss teenager ass.
Sol would offer so much to the team!

Posted by: Hassan | February 12, 2013 at 10:00 PM
Hassan, what is your rationale for suggesting Lockley RS??
He seems to have a frame that would allow him to compete his first year - Just curious

Canes hoops getting some love in Minneapolis for crying out loud! sports radio morning show saying SoBe could very well have two hoops champs!
Also, New Jags HC was interviewed (he's from MN) & had comments about Jedd. Said he was impressed with the way he he is able to beat D's in multiple ways. Said Jedd had consulted a few times with Chip Kelly while he was at OR. I never knew that.

You know, BJ's article brings up "The Elephant In The Room",AKA, the NCAA investigation. Without a doubt, we'll go dancing in March...but do ya'll think that we'll self impose? Given Larranaga's age, our rise in the polls, and having to replace so many players next season, I think Larranaga at least would be pretty defiant against self imposing...
### With five roster openings to fill for next basketball season, UM is recruiting players in Europe and is a finalist (with USF and South Carolina) for Demetrius Henry (the nation’s No. 14 center) and a finalist (with USF) for high-scoring three-star guard Niem Stevenson, Henry’s teammate at Faith Baptist Christian in Brandon, Fl.
But former Lakers coach Mike Brown’s son, point guard Elijah, chose Butler over UM and others. Recruits keep asking UM coaches about whether the Canes will face NCAA sanctions. But Jim Larranaga believes the team's exceptional play is going to help recruiting by the time April's signing period rolls around.

"Looking like 2014 DT's Anthony Moten and Khairi Clark both have Canes as front-runners behind the scenes.
Hope it stays that way. Can see Golden going all out after missing on DT's this year."
Good to hear, but way too early. Wins and a resolution to the NCAA nonsense cure everything.

I read that Clark's family are Miami season ticket holder. Also, Miami has seemed to always get the guys they want from that school.. Beason, Futch etc
Posted by: UMike | February 13, 2013 at 07:13 AM
Do you think UM and the NCAA are working out a deal this week? It sure is quiet.. Maybe a few more scholly's next season along with time served? The investigation is tainted, rouge investigators screwed up the whole investigation! NCAA had a "lack of institutional control".
Since the NCAA can't even control their own employee's, then how in the hell is a University supposed to control boosters who are non-employee's? TIME TO MOVE FORWARD.
Go Canes!!

Early stargazing craziness for 2014 (UM Targets):
5. Sony Michel
29. Ermon Lane
50. K.C. McDermott
69. Khairi Clark
121. Treon Harris (FSU)
161. Trevor Darling (UM commit)
170. Anthony Moten
207. Chad Thomas (FSU)

LB, I think we can get Chad Thomas. Even though he's at Booker T.
I think Treon Harris pulls a Denard Robinson & goes to a school that will let him play QB. That won't be FSU...
Posted by: CoCane | February 13, 2013 at 08:40 AM
CoCane...I agree with you on both points. Especially if we get the NCAA cloud off us, Golden and staff (with key additions Mario and Coley) will do wonders in South Florida next year.

"LB, I think we can get Chad Thomas. Even though he's at Booker T."
I don't know. More than a few little birds told me that a certain chilly coach will always be problematic for crime-fighting ties.
But again, wins cure everything.
