It is about time. Finally, after two long years, it is time to play hardball.
The President of the University of Miami, Donna Shalala, released this statement just a few minutes ago:
“The University takes full responsibility for the conduct of its employees and student-athletes. Where the evidence of NCAA violations has been substantiated, we have self-imposed appropriate sanctions, including unilaterally eliminating once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for our students and coaches over the past two years, and disciplining and withholding players from competition.
We believe strongly in the principles and values of fairness and due process. However, we have been wronged in this investigation, and we believe that this process must come to a swift resolution, which includes no additional punitive measures beyond those already self-imposed.
In September 2010—two and a half years ago—the University of Miami advised the NCAA of allegations made by a convicted felon against former players and, at that time, we pledged our full cooperation with any investigation into the matter.
One year later, in August 2011, when the NCAA’s investigation into alleged rules violations was made public, I pledged we would ‘vigorously pursue the truth, wherever that path may lead’ and insisted upon ‘complete, honest, and transparent cooperation with the NCAA from our staff and students.’
The University of Miami has lived up to those promises, but sadly the NCAA has not lived up to their own core principles. The lengthy and already flawed investigation has demonstrated a disappointing pattern of unprofessional and unethical behavior. By the NCAA leadership’s own admission, the University of Miami has suffered from inappropriate practices by NCAA staff.
There have also been damaging leaks to the media of unproven charges. Regardless of where blame lies internally with the NCAA, even one individual, one act, one instance of malfeasance both taints the entire process and breaches the public’s trust.
There must be a strong sense of urgency to bring this to closure. Our dedicated staff and coaches, our outstanding student-athletes, and our supporters deserve nothing less.” –
Donna E. Shalala, University of Miami President

Greatest written statement ever! Period. End of story.

Donna took round 1 with a couple of quick jabs, two solid uppercuts and a roundhouse right hook to end the round.
Emmert looks dazed, he had no idea his competition would fight back. As he went to his corner, he was seen with a nasty welt below his left eye.
Posted by: 86Cane | February 18, 2013 at 07:01 PM
It's not "about time", it's the "right time"! Donna has played this perfectly from the beginning. One thing that has been lost in all of this is that with the exception of the abortion allegation most of what was alleged was true.
We didn't have anything to "go get" until 23 Jan 13 when the NCAA admitted their wrongdoing. NOW we can go on the offensive! Before we were hoping for (eyes roll) mercy from the NCAA.
The smart play here is still a settlement, but Donna just put the NCAA on blast that she will accept nothing short of time served! Well played!
Go 'canes!

Disagree, Sarasota. We had this info a long time ago and those shake-down letters would have Ben a food time to shoot one over their bow. But at least we're fighting and we're not getting yesterday back. So now we're all on the same page.

I love it Donna bring the Heat to the NCAA.

Round two is just starting: Shalala looks really angry, she snarles and spits at Emmert, and then launches her attack...
Posted by: 86Cane | February 18, 2013 at 07:15 PM
I'm no expert in PR, but the NCAA is really shocking me with its decision to keep blustering forward. They sort of got away with abandoning any semblance of due process at Penn State because the allegations were so . . . evil. But in this instance, where the NCAA isn't just making up rules as it goes along, but actively defying existing rules, I just don't see how they hope to maintain any illusion of legitimacy.
Posted by: dj moonbat | February 18, 2013 at 07:22 PM
most of what was alleged was true.
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | February 18, 2013 at 07:03 PM
I agree with your statement for the most part, but totally and completely disagree with the quote from ypu above.
There were violations for sure, and we punished ourselves for those. Like Donna said, for those were there was substantiation, we self imposed. What's been alleged is much more than what we've punished ourselves for. said, for those were there was substantiation, we self imposed. What's been alleged is much more than what we've punished ourselves for. What's been alleged has only been from media sources, like Robinson and Navarro. There have been no formal allegations from the NCAA. This is fact.
Show me where, how, when, and by whom, "most of what was alleged was true." Show me how the allegations were proven true.
I'm waiting.

So is the NCAA. They just want to stretch this to August.
Posted by: TonyCane | February 18, 2013 at 07:59 PM
Time to lawyer up and bring the big guns! The NCAA has no credibility and it is time for a settlement! My son was called out on a bad call to end a high school baseball game. His dumb ass drops an f bomb at the umpire. I am upset with him and I tell the coach he needs to sit for a couple of games in addition to running his ass off at, during and after practice. The coach (an ex college teammate) informs me that the umpire will send a report to the FHSAA and he is looking at a 3-5 game suspension. I say good, he deserves to be punished. I receive a call 24 hours later informing me my son has been suspended SIX WEEKS! Needless to say I researched what the FHSAA guidelines state and of course the ruling and guidelines don't match the punishment. This is about to get interesting.

Very well written! Miami once again may change college athletics! I don't think a university has ever sued the NCAA. Miami may be the first.
Hahaha....NCAA had a lack of institutional control, so damn funny!!!!

yessssss !! that's what im talking about Donna !
now its time to move Brennon Carroll back to TE coach and get Lockette now ! Lets go canes
Posted by: laquinton | February 18, 2013 at 09:30 PM
Shapiro didn't have the cell phone, the NCAA investigator had a pre-paid phone, known as a "burner" on the street, so that his contact with Shapiro could not be traced! It's actually worse than giving the phone to Shapiro! This case gets better and better everyday!
Go 'canes!

Great letter by Pres. Shalala. I'll be very curious to see how the next few days play out.
Huge game vs. UVa at home tomorrow, and maybe a scarier game at Wake Forest on the 23rd, as these road games may all be trap games at this stage. It's hard to win repeatedly...almost like a team needs a loss to get the monkey and pressure off its back. On the other hand, IU goes to now #4 Mich. State tomorrow night. If the U takes care of business this week, there's a good chance the #1 spot will be theirs for the taking imo. I'd say 80% MSU will take down IU at home, although both are hot right now. Nice that the U managed to get an early season win over MSU mixed amongst those games like FGCU and Ind. State...

We need to find under the radar assistant coaches that r fundamentally sound in their discipline. They wouldn't be hired away for about 3 years. By then we would have gotten the best/most out of them. This superstars we r bringing in r been picked apart by pro teams & power houses. We need continuity in coaching staff to complete our recovery.

After a three-game sweep of Rutgers to open their spring campaign, the Miami Hurricanes rose eight spots to No. 20 in the first Collegiate Baseball poll of the 2013 regular season released Monday.
The Hurricanes, ranked No. 28 in the publication’s preseason poll, outscored the visiting Scarlet Knights 16-5 over the weekend. Despite adverse weather conditions and still missing two top arms due to injury, the Hurricane starters allowed zero earned runs in 17 combined innings of work.
Nine Hurricanes rookies made their debuts over the course of the weekend, and a number of them delivered key performances to help Miami open its season with a sweep. David Thompson (five RBI's), Alex Hernandez (three hits), Brandon Lopez (three hits) and Thomas Woodrey (one save), all part of a recruiting class ranked ninth-best in the nation by Collegiate Baseball, helped guide the Canes to a perfect weekend at Alex Rodriguez Park.
The Hurricanes return to the diamond Wednesday, when they travel to FAU for a midweek matchup with the Owls. First pitch from FAU Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m.

Easy folks, EASY.
I just found SOME of your comments in the filter and posted them. But please do not attack each other, attack the NCAA.

Per the Herald:
"Shapiro, now serving a 20-year federal prison sentence for his $930-million Ponzi scheme, has spent countless hours telling the NCAA how he provided more than 100 mostly former UM athletes with several thousand dollars worth of improper benefits from 2002 to 2010.
Read more here: http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/02/18/3241012_p2/external-review-some-ncaa-staffers.html#storylink=cpy
So ultimately what we are talking about is several thousand dollars, total? That's it?
