After a dominant showing from sophomore Chris Diaz earlier in the day, Salas delivered a quality start of his own in the series-clinching win. The Coral Gables native went six innings, allowing only four hits and one unearned run. He finished the night with four strikeouts.
It was the Hurricanes who struck first in the nightcap, a rare seven-inning affair due to the rain-caused doubleheader. Miami registered four of their 10 hits in the first, including back-to-back doubles from senior Chantz Mack and freshman David Thompson, to jump out to the early lead. Dale Carey’s triple off Rutgers' Tyler Gebler, which made its way to the wall in the rightfield gap, plated Thompson for a 2-0 advantage.
With two of the team’s top starters out due to injury, Salas, who served as the team’s midweek starter in 2012, stepped up in front of a crowd of 2,981 on a cold night at A-Rod Park. The junior retired his first eight opposing batters, working himself out of jams in the third and fourth innings to
maintain the lead. A lone unearned run, which came on a passed ball in the fifth inning, cut the Hurricanes’ lead in half.
But the Hurricanes would respond with a run of their own, as junior infielder Alex Hernandez doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on a Thompson groundout. Another run in the sixth, this one on a sacrifice fly from Brad Fieger that plated Alex San Juan, gave the Hurricanes a late 4-1 advantage.
By game’s end, every Hurricane starter had recorded at least one hit, while San Juan recorded the first multi-hit game of his career with a 2-for-3 effort. Sophomore catcher Garrett Kennedy, who delivered the walk-off hit in game one, reached base three times Saturday night.
Freshman lefthander Thomas Woodrey entered the game in relief of Salas and recorded his first career save by pitching a clean final inning. The Lighthouse Point, Fla., native, who became the sixth Hurricane to make his debut Saturday, induced a groundout from second baseman Nick Favatella to clinch the victory.
The Hurricanes look to close out the sweep of Rutgers Sunday when they face the Scarlet Knights in a 1 p.m. matchup at A-Rod Park at Mark Light Field.

### Though the NCAA hasn’t yet publicly released results of the investigation into its improper handling of a portion of the UM case, an NCAA source says UM has a good sense of what’s in the report, including confirmation of the NCAA agreeing to pay Nevin Shapiro’s attorney for her legal services.
UM and the NCAA spoke last week about two issues they’re still debating --- how the NCAA’s misconduct will affect the forthcoming notice of allegations and how the case will proceed from here.
UM continues to push for a settlement --- without having to appear before the infractions committee –-but NCAA president Mark Emmert knows he needs the blessing of two NCAA committees to take that highly unusual step, and whether that will happen is still very much up in the air.
One person in contact with the NCAA said a settlement cannot be ruled out, though several NCAA experts (such as John Infante) have said it's unlikely because there's no precedent for a settlement in a recruiting case. Remember, Emmert bypassed the usual protocol only in the Penn State case, which involved Jerry Sandusky's child molestation.
The 35 presidents on those two committees could balk at a UM settlement. But some believe they could be pursuaded if Emmert makes a convincing case why this matter should be resolved quickly. Emmert also could tell UM it must go before the infractions committee but instruct the infractions committee to expedite the process.
“Hopefully, we’ll get to a conclusion here very quickly,” UM coach Al Golden said.
And how long could this go on if the NCAA doesn’t settle?
For perspective, consider that after receiving its allegations in November 2011, Central Florida didn’t get its penalties for nearly nine months (July 31). UCF appealed its one-year football bowl ban in September, and is still awaiting a decision – 15 ½ months after getting its allegations.
That’s an absolute worst-case scenario UM could face if it appeals --- a saga that drags into a fourth year and past next February's football signing day. But Donna Shalala told Trustees recently that this NCAA mess cannot affect another football and basketball recruiting class.
By the way, UM has no current plans to sue the NCAA, though it has not been ruled out.
And UM expects to receive its notice of allegations very quickly after the NCAA publicly releases the report on the investigation into the NCAA's misconduct in the UM case.

To better fill up the stands for the TV camera next year, the student and band sections will be moved from the end zone to behind the opponents bench. TV cameras are normally pointed at the toward the opponents side.
To fill up the stands and help with recruiting long term (Assuming the NCAA allows it) I would add that for non sell-out games, we should be giving away or at least deeply discounting tickets to local high school, junior high and other football teams like PAL.
If we're not going to sell out, at least use it to our advantage. That's something the small town universities with their sell outs no matter who the opposing team is couldn't compete with.

Cane rock, I guess that answers the question of whether or not Miami would self impose a third consecutive bowl ban if the NCAA had not finished its investigation by the fall.

Only two posts in for the win has to be the record here, right? Seeing as how there's no topping WWiN on this one I'll just add, "FIRE JIM MORRIS," and take my leave until The Pimp is back in the news on the blog.

Lets see predictions for the Clemson game today.
I've got the "U" 76 - Clemson 65

OGV,
I hit a cockroach with my "ram antler spray" formula on the side of my building. By the time I lit my cigarette. He grew red bull wings, flew down off the wall, rammed a stray cat into the side of the stairs, gave him a Dwayne Johnson "rock bottom" wrestling move & slammed it on the concrete. Then he threw up the "U" with his antenna's & took off flying after a pigeon. THIS SHYT IS AMAZING!!! Lol!

That's what she said, from what WWiN tells me. Going to need three cases of your product Coke (DEA alert!) if what Feldman says in his latest mailbag is true;
"From @Stanley_emile: Can UM have a dreamlike 2013 similar to Notre Dame 2012?
I expect Miami to be much-improved in 2013 from last year's team that qualified for a spot in the ACC title game, but also had been beaten by double-digits three times. The 'Canes were one of the youngest teams in the country. The best talent in the program was all freshmen and sophomores, so with an added year of seasoning, they figure to be a lot better, tougher, smarter. They should be very explosive on offense, but the biggest difference between the 2012 Notre Dame team and what Miami returns is the Fighting Irish had some legit difference-makers in the middle of their defense. I don't see that with UM right now. That's what's missing, and while Miami can be a Top 25 team without studs anchoring the D, the 'Canes aren't going to be competing for titles without them. All the great Miami teams had speed and difference-makers up the middle of the D. Miami has the speed now, but it's the other part of the equation that isn't there yet."
Working on Chimpanzee neo-cortex spray for D'No right now myself, hope to have something useable to carpet bomb him with at the spring game so he understands you send six or more on 3rd and more than 14 every time the down and distance presents itself. Oh, and a fake girlfriend for DZP to play for the memory of when she dies from unicorn horn ingestion poisoning after a meteor strike hits her personal rocket pack while she's flying to the top of mount Olympus also the Wednesday before they play UF.

OGV...hilarious! Perhaps you could put real-time subliminal messaging into the video replays at the stadium, and thereby dictate playcalling to DNo.
Posted by: TonyCane | February 17, 2013 at 02:08 PM
I tried that the year before this last one TC, the result was this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqffXDLY56A&feature=player_embedded
Unfortunately it only appears to work if you ignore the fact that Fisch basically ran his play calls in slow motion the entire year thus making the game shorter for the mutant from Philly by giving him less chances to do what he does and screw up every time. As of this year the technique was extinct on the 'trons and you saw what happened when the offense decided to actually try and set records instead of help the special needs cases on the coaching staff by putting the restriction plates on their engine.

I've got a new formule: its bear penis spray. we'll get some for the D line. it will make them strong so they can 'penetrate' the line of scrimmage.

Time to change the blog title to "three is better than two" -- Canes win 7-0 to sweep Rutgers. Great defensive effort through 3 games.

Continuing the terrible start. Clemson is packing the paint & daring us to hit perimeter shots. It's working for them so far...

Miami 14 Clemson 15 4 minutes left in the first half.
Miami 5-21 from the field 1-10 from 3 point range

Miami 18 Clemson 16 at the half.
We look terrible tonight. Settling for jumpshots instead of taking it inside. Also we're turning it over too much. We look nothing like the #3 team in the country so far...
Posted by: CoCane | February 17, 2013 at 06:46 PM
Another thing. Durand Scott picked up his 2nd foul early in the 1st half. Clemson was able to trap Larkin in the half court offense because of it. Scott's the only other player from Larkin that can create shots for other players. If Scott stays out of foul trouble in the 2nd half, take the ball to the rim more, hit the open perimeter shots & stop turning the ball over, we should pull away.

4STAR DE FROM GULLIVER PREP INKS WITH LOUISVILLE?? WE'RE WE EVEN A THOUGHT FOR HIM?
Posted by: canezilla | February 17, 2013 at 06:54 PM
As obvious as having your top scorer in foul trouble is going to gum up a basketball team's ability to score points, Scott also is the key piece to making all four of the other guys on the court tougher to defend from his drive and finish ability forcing defensive rotations that can be exploited.

Wow Jay Williams is cheering so much for Clemson I want him to take a very short ride on his motorcycle into the wall rather than listen to him. Vitale must have implored him to extract revenge for the Duke blowout tonight for them both.

Miami 33 Clemson 33
The longer this game goes. The worse feeling I get about it
Posted by: CoCane | February 17, 2013 at 07:19 PM
UM's scoring depth will pull them through, the defensive effort is there tonight so they'll need to hit free throws down the stretch to pull it out and if they can get hot and not double off from the hot hand on the perimeter for Clemson still can run away with this late here.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | February 17, 2013 at 07:21 PM
Commercial timeout.
Miami 35 Clemson 33
I want to see more cutting to the rim. Clemson's doubling hard everytime Reggie or Kadji posts up.
