There is no need to read between the lines.
There is no hidden meaning or hidden agenda.
There is no mystery, intrigue or puzzle to solve.
There is no top secret information that needs to be shared.
And, if you are a University of Miami football fan, there is certainly no need to get your knickers all in a wad over the Denver Kirkland situation.
As everyone reading this already knows, Kirkland is the highly sought after, four star offensive lineman from Booker T Washington high school in Miami. UM was one of many schools that were heavily recruiting Kirkland and had even offered him a scholarship to become a Miami Hurricane.
At least until yesterday that is. That was when Kirkland, apparently playing the always popular but not always effective "recruiting game" that usually involves more hats tricks than a full season of hockey games, was informed by Miami that the Hurricane train had left the station.
Every single one of the Internets that Al Gore created were all abuzz on Thursday night after news of the situation broke in the late afternoon. So, I thought I would weigh in and offer my humble opinion on this issue.
To me it would appear that UM head coach Al Golden sent a clear, concise and long overdue message to all potential high school recruits who might like to spend their college years as a student-athlete at "The U": U snooze, U lose.
And, I for one, totally, completely and fully approve of this message.
So now, the day after the smoke has cleared, it appears that Booker T. Washington high school football Coach Ice "Ice Baby" Harris is back-pedaling a little on the comments he made on Twitter last night to the Miami Herald's Manny Navarro.
It seems coach Harris may have had big dreams of getting some serious media attention for himself and his school by playing match-maker between Kirkland and his many college suitors and instead fumbled the ball at the goal line and was shocked that his little scheme and his client wound up paying a heavy price in what basically amounted to recruiting divorce court.
Personally, I respected, appreciated and valued the move by Golden and the way he handled this situation so much that I have invented a new term to mark the day, and the way, that he single-handedly brought college football recruiting finally crashing back to earth: "Kirklanded".
Definition: (1) The act of waiting too long to make your decision on verbally committing to your school of choice and thereby having the school pull your scholarship offer and leaving you standing all alone out in the cold looking more foolish than you are young; (2) trying to get too cute during the recruiting process by telling the school you really want to attend that they are in your "top three" schools under the delusion of having all of the power in the recruiting process and thereby losing your best option; (3) the act of having your high school coach get in the way, give you bad advice and fumble away the only real chance you ever had to attend your dream school.
Just a word of advice to all high school football recruits out there: hat tricks are for kids, so commit to Miami while you can.
And please, whatever U do, don't get "Kirklanded".

The Pimp is going to wait just how long to play Gamble at C, Reggie at PF and slide Kadji to SF as his starting front-court, second half of the ACC schedule?
It only took 5 3/4 years but Julian Gamble now shouldn't come off the court unless he's in foul trouble for UM.

I love it! More coaches should take this approach.

Great Canes win...We were able to appreciate the great coaching from coach L...His game plan was good along with the time outs always at the right time.
Posted by: Montreal-Cane | February 02, 2013 at 06:27 PM
I've said it before, but IF the Canes get to a dominant position in college basketball look out. All the keys needed to rule that sport are in place. The sweet on-campus arena. A beautiful campus, which makes Duke or Florida State look like barren wastelands. And a pool of local talent that just need a reason to consider the U.
And once they do, look out.
IT HAS BEGUN!

Thank you Terrance, now back to my obvious anti-bias against that guy who can't win on the road at UM's other revenue sport and his pet mutant college dorm catfish from Philly . . . wait, I meant mythical, not obvious, yeah.

Not only an amazing win on a poor 3 point shooting night on the road, but lots of the 13 teams ahead of them in the polls losing over the last few days and today (Oregon and Butler getting blasted a few d/a, and Syracuse and Kansas getting taken down today). I don't know that the U will leapfrog over KU with today's win and their loss, but moving up to at least #11 is a strong possibility if no other top teams go down before the polls.

11 would be big. Its like a perfect storm no pun intended. We are starting to really make a believer the nations been put on notice folks. Im excited, ohio and umike have got me frothing at the mouth. I cant wait for wed

From Pete Ariz
**The big news for today that is worth tracking is the meeting between Denver Kirkland and Miami, which I've confirmed will happen today and plan on getting information from it as the day goes on. Miami reached out to Kirkland and his family and they agreed to meet with the coaches, which shows me a couple things. 1) That the door has not completely closed on the possibility of Kirkland coming to Miami. If there was no interest from Kirkland's side, him and his family would not have agreed to meet with Miami. And 2) Miami had a change of heart about something. Whether it's that they feel like they handled the situation wrong and just want to smooth things out, or if they want to grant him another opportunity to commit to Miami on signing day, something triggered this to happen, but it's tough to pinpoint exactly what it was. If, and that's a big "if", things can be worked out between the two sides and Kirkland would have his offer again, this would put Miami back into a better spot with Matthew Thomas, who I don't feel confident about at the moment.
**I posted earlier today that Miami's visit with Keith Bryant yesterday went well, according to Bryant himself. Al Golden, Brennan Carroll, and Jethro Franklin were the three coaches that sat down with him. Tito Benach and I have both been told by separate people with knowledge of the situation that while Bryant is leaning towards Florida State, and has been for a while, that his mother is on Miami's side and wants him closer to home. This is an interesting development because Bryant told me back in November that his mom was telling him to get out of South Florida because it would help him "grow up." There were also quotes from Bryant's mother a few weeks back, stating she wanted him at Miami, so this latest info goes along with that.
**As I posted a few hours ago, the LSU side continues to feel very strong about holding onto Rashard Robinson. A person I spoke to earlier who has spoken to Rashard in the last few days asked him why he has been telling local media that Miami is in it, and Robinson responded by saying that he didn't want to burn any bridges and show respect for the hometown team. This same person told me there was no credence to a rumor that LSU was "on the verge" of pulling Robinson's offer because of his flirtation with Miami. Apparently Robinson has never expressed to the LSU staff that Miami was a threat, but I am still not counting out a switch from happening because Miami still feels there is a legit shot with him.
**I plan on catching up with Augustus Edwards after his visit this weekend, but I'm told it's going well so far. I still believe that Miami would take both him and Collins. The 'Canes were in a good spot with him before this weekend so I suspect a solid visit will put Miami in the driver's seat.

Another Manny article was just posted which indicated Kirkland said thanks but no thanks to Barrow at the 3pm meeting this afternoon. In the article Kirkland's stepfather stated it is between Miami and FSU. Which is it Manny?

Great tip in by BIG REGGIEEEEE!!! GREAT WIN!!! As good as this team is, they could be better. Imagine if Daniels doesn't leave & Adams wasn't out for the year. How good would they be then??? WOW

Kirkland tells UM thanks, but no thanks
They tried.
UM coaches met with Booker T. All-American offensive tackle Denver Kirkland Saturday and his mother, but weren't able to sway him to commit.
Kirkland's stepfather Shanton Crummie told CanesInsider's Brandon Odoi Kirkland will choose between FSU and Miami.
A source told The Miami Herald, assistants Art Kehoe, James Coley and Micheal Barrow were among those who attended the meeting. Head coach Al Golden the source said was not there.
Crummie didn't return phone calls from The Herald.
UM still has hope it will land Kirkland's teammate star linebacker Matthew Thomas. National Signing Day is Wednesday.
The good news? Miami's men's basketball team is 8-0 in ACC play. And the Canes still have a heck of a freshman class coming back for Golden next year.

Soooo Manny just tweeted that there WAS an agreement in place between Kirkland's family and Miami to give them an answer by Feb 1st, but that coach Harris was not aware of it. I would expect some kind of public apology from Harris to be forthcoming for the unwarranted invective hurled at Golden and Co.

OGV - why was the pimp hand sheathed until late in the game?
Either way, the hand was stinging and hard at the end.
Posted by: Canesfan_1 | February 02, 2013 at 07:49 PM
Kirkland says thanks but no thanks??? After walking away heartbroken because his scholly got pulled... Then going up to the campus to meet with coaches... To say thanks but no thanks??? But it's STILL between FSU & the "U"... That don't sound right... Could it be that he really committed behind the scenes but they're pulling a public hoax so he can pull out the cane hat on signing day & throw up the "U". Or, just wanted to vengefully dis the program after being embarrased. Who knows these things. We'll see on NSD. It'll be interesting...
Posted by: CoCane | February 02, 2013 at 07:57 PM
Because of the poor three point shooting by UM in the 1st half C_1.
The Pimp got things straightened out the 2nd half even with NC State getting on track from three range.
That's why he's gunning for the Odai lifetime extension now that .500 in ACC play is guaranteed. MIRACLES! IN MIAMI!

So...seems the story wasn't we were first told after all.
Kirkland had till Feb 1, still won't commit and then his coach came into the game.
My view, he was backing out all the way, and AG called it game over.
Credit to the U, they gave the kid one more chance, and he's still not willing to commit.
Time to move on, this story is over and getting old.
Let's find some kids who want a free quality education and a chance to play at the U. Once we have them it's up to AG to get them ready to win.

If you're referring to the "deadline"...according to DK's Dad, it was the family that suggested 2-1 or 2-2, NOT UM.
•Per Manny:
"The confusion here is that not many people were aware they had been telling us things were getting tight with scholarships. We told them Denver might have a decision by Feb. 1 or Feb. 2. We were just surprised and upset when they came to school Thursday and told him they couldn't wait any longer. We thought he would have until Signing Day as long as we told them they were in front or close. But they couldn't wait."
Posted by: CaneRock | February 02, 2013 at 09:25 PM
And does anyone know if Ira Denson is on campus this weekend...
Posted by: CaneRock | February 02, 2013 at 09:29 PM

So, in a HILARIOUS turn, Keef was sent home early on his FAU visit for not being serious.
Apparently, FAU coaches thought they could get him? LOL
