BREAKING: Two FSU athletes arrested after reports of gunshots

Two Florida State track and field athletes have been arrested in connection with a report of gunfire within the city limits.

Stephen Newbold, 18, is charged with discharging a firearm in public and resisting arrest without violence.

Ronnell J. Mance, 21, is charged with possession of a forged driver’s license and resisting arrest without violence.

According to the police report, Tallahassee Police Department responded to reports of gunshots in the area of the pool at 810 Wadsworth Street, Campus Walk Apartments, around 3:36 a.m. this morning.

Arresting officer Terry Mahan arrived at the scene and encountered five men and ordered them to put their hands on their heads. An officer ordered the men searched and one suspect, later identified as Stephen Newbold, fled the scene.

The four remaining suspects were searched. Mance resisted an officer during the pat down and was placed under arrest. An ID card was found on Mance that did not belong to him with a date that had been altered.

Newbold was tracked and located by a K-9 officer and arrested for resisting an officer without violence.

A witness living at Campus Walk Apartments who said she heard two gunshots. She then looked out her window and saw a man later identified as Newbold fire two more times in the direction of the apartments' pool.

Florida State Athletics issued a statement in response to news of the incident:

“We are aware of the arrests and are working to gather all the facts. The students have been suspended from the team effective immediately. Whether they can return as student-athletes will be determined through our discipline policy and any legal proceedings,” said Director of Athletics Randy Spetman regarding the included probable cause reports.

The shooting appears to have not caused injuries, involved a couple of track athletes somehow. Don't know much about it but thank God nobody was hurt.

Per CaneInsider, via ESPN:

Beginning of ESPN article:

MIAMI, Fla. -- Sony Michel (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage) has spent the spring working on his hands and trying to become a student of the game as he prepares for the next level. Now at 205 pounds, Michel hopes to add to his 4,819 career rushing yards and 57 touchdowns this fall, but the ESPN Watch List running back also admitted he could be ready to make a decision well before his senior season.

Poster from CI breaking the article down:

-decision will be mid april, no more visits, decision will be final
-"miami is a team I always see myself playing for. I like the offense they run and the backs they produce as well
- says there is no local pressure to pick miami
- says he already as a school in mind that he plans to commit too

on georgia- "Their running backs coach, Bryan McClendon, is a great guy that really relates well to the players. I feel like the success of their running backs in that offense is something that would be great for me."

on notre dame- Notre Dame: "Me and running backs coach Tony Alford have a great relationship and when I visited it was something different for me. I felt good on campus and Coach Alford made me feel comfortable."

Syracuse hoops under investigation by NCAA
March 20, 2013 3:20 pm ET

Syracuse University basketball has been under NCAA investigation for a period of “years,” a source with knowledge of the case told CBSSports.com.

That source said the school has received a letter of preliminary inquiry from the NCAA.

The specific nature of the alleged violations was not disclosed by the source but the transgressions were described as both major and wide-ranging in nature. The investigation also encompasses football but is believed to primarily involve basketball.

First, Odogwu won't need any Tide until his redshirt soph. year. Hype & Hope is what spring forecast are all about. Spring football is great for the coaches evaluation but for the ultra fan like the Herb, I could careless. I care naught, about legends of the Spring only about the end product on game day.
Checking out Canesport today and I saw where Hamilton was talking about the defense and all the disrespect he got from friends and family because of last years production and he had the Gaul to say they didn't need to be like the defenses of the 80's but start their own identity, this was a new time. Last I remember, defense is defense, no matter what era and the objective still remains to score more than your opponent. I'd call last years defense "Sisters of the poor" best I can give them. To Mr. Hamilton, being compared to the 80's defense, would be an upgrade from what I witnessed last year and a damn great complement.

CaneRock

And Ogdogwu...love His attitude and perspective on life.
BUT!, He's gonna be a project as far as football is concerned, I don't see Him in the O-Line rotation anytime soon.

CaneRock

When watching drills be careful because drills are not Football, they are designed to do something, so when you see a 330 lb man move a 270 man why does that shock you, Football is not wrestling, it is not weight lifting, it is Football. Do you think Von Miller can win those drills against an NFL tackle? NOOOOO and it is not designed for him to.

Posted by: Hassan | March 20, 2013 at 12:41 PM

True that.
That was basically a drive block drill for the O-Line, so a stalemate was basically a win for the D-Line.
And Chick didn't do that bad, I was just pointing out Flowers' quickness and technique coming off the ball, He has that quick twitch that you look for on the D-Line.
And Bunche is a freakin' ROAD-GRADER!, but I don't see Him as a Tackle on the next level.

Seantrel is playing just fine, he is not a sorry player he is an NFL talent, and still improving, he is plenty strong, he is not "weight room strong" he has long arms he will not put up big reps but even around 25 reps is not bad and he will get closer to 30 at the combine. Flowers is a very impressive OL and will be one of the best to come through here in a long time, he has a great family too. When watching drills be careful because drills are not Football, they are designed to do something, so when you see a 330 lb man move a 270 man why does that shock you, Football is not wrestling, it is not weight lifting, it is Football. Good morning, all. Hoping to get through two more work days, can't get sick before Friday. :)

CoCane

Montreal Cane,

I know it's early in the spring but I don't expect much from the D-Line. I think the talent is better than the production we'll see. The problem is Jethro Franklin & the scheme we run. Until an aggressive scheme & D-Line coach is in place, we're going to see what we saw last year. I think they'll be a little better but not much.

As for the O-line. Flowers should start at LT, Henderson RT, with Bunche rotating at both spots to keep them fresh...

Ohio_Cane

Canes offered 2015 ATH Shawn Burgess-Becker yesterday. So did Bama.

Coley likes him at WR, but said he's special at DB also.

This is Golden's kinda player. Expect him to go hard after this one.

"While I think our OL will be a strength this fall seems we may be seeing the same old story.

Way too early. However, remember that even if Flowers beats Seantrel... that Susan's man is probably the very best 6th offensive lineman in the ACC (if he is considered 6).

Defensive line? Another story. Until we get at least one dominant force on the line (preferably in the middle), the d-line will continue to be a liability.

Just as a bit of trivia, per ESPN it turns out the Canes aren't the first ACC team to win the regular season ACC and the ACC tnmt. and not get a 1 seed:

And going back to the start of NCAA seeding in 1979, only one team -- Georgia Tech in 1985 -- had failed to earn a No. 1 after winning at least a share of the regular-season crown to go with the tournament title, according to STATS LLC.

Also, per the article, the ACC coaches feel slighted by way of UVa and UMaryland being left out of the NCAA tnmt, along with Miami not getting a 1 seed, etc. (Duke, UM and UNC were all in the top 20 of the RPI). Unfortunately bad losses follow teams the rest of their seasons, just like having an affair does for the rest of the relationship (except there's no way to keep the bad loss from being heard about).

Jon Bastian:

Louisiana’s Kenny Young “Feels Good” About Miami Offer

Part of a national championship high school team, New Orleans (La.) John Curtis linebacker Kenny Young has become one of the most recruited prospects in the Southeast. Less than two weeks ago, the 2014 standout received an offer from the University of Miami and has been in contact with them ever since.

“I had talked to Coach (Michael) Barrow and Coach (Hurlie) Brown last week,” Young said. “I’m getting to know them a little bit. They want me to come up there. They just want me to make it because they know it’s a pretty far ride, so they just want me to make it. Not too many people get an offer from Miami, especially from where I’m from, Louisiana. It just feels good.”

Young, 6-foot-2 and 215-pounds, knows the history of Miami, but is looking forward to learning more things about the program that he doesn’t know.

“I’ve never really been down there,” Young said. “Obviously, they had a lot of great players come out of Miami. They had a lot of great linebackers. Ray Lewis is the best linebacker to watch and Ed Reed is from where I’m from. So, they had a lot of great players that came out of there.”

Since the beginning of 2013, Young has accumulated 20 Division 1 offers–all of which he says has a chance to land his services.

“My only offer in January was LSU,” Young said. “I picked up my offers in February and March. I got some [offers] after LSU, then I got a ‘Bama one and everybody started offering. It’s still early and I’m just enjoying the process. I’m giving everybody a fair chance. I don’t have any favorites yet.”

His college decision isn’t likely to come any time soon. “I think it’s best for me to weigh all my options out and see what’s best for me. It’s a once in a lifetime thing. It’s my future in my hands, so I think signing day will be the best time for me.”

Honestly, it was nearly impossible at the time to find any fault with a hire who had that one postseason run where they lost a lead in the second half to a .500 team from the pacific coast playing in Washington DC against his team based in the eastern timezone, then when you get to the dreamy interviews with the media filled with the same quotes again and again and all rational evaluation of his career naturally got tossed out the window by the fans and anybody with any doubts is just an obvious hater of some nebulous something the guy had achieved to that point or some such claim.

I have to respect people that admit when they're not right. I agree with orang' about the prez, and it just bugs me when such a narrow view is taken but it's so true about those November days being dark ones.

When it comes to this

letters to the alumni to talk to the NCAA or else face ostracism from their alma mater for example is going to be her low point to her presidency to date

I think she was left with no choice even though I hated that it happened. But with 20/20 it's a good move now because the school can argue forcefully that they cooperated and went way way way above what was required. I'm hoping for no more penalties of any kind.

Maybe I'm nuts, but as much as I enjoy victories and all the recognition, I enjoy following my team no matter what, and rejoicing and suffering with others fans of the team. There's always a up time and a down time, no matter who you root for. The hard times of the hoops team made this ACC title all the more sweeter. I'll bet you anything we have enjoyed this season and title a lot more than a dukie or heel would enjoy a title season. I'm a diehard tennis fan and despite the fact that they are ranked #70, struggling to get into the NCAA tourney and doing a lousy job of recruiting right now, they are my team and I'm gonna enjoy it when they finally reach the top.
Sorry, turning into a rant, but my point is, we all get down when we lose and feel great when we win, but the main thing is that we support the team no matter what. That's the fun part.

orange 'n green in the vein

Yeah, safe to say the middle of November last year was not a fun time for the dyed in the wool Hurricane supporters on here CAD. Historically bad football defense does that to the posters on here, like full moons making lycanthropes turn hairy and grow fangs. The Don doesn't walk on water by any means (letters to the alumni to talk to the NCAA or else face ostracism from their alma mater for example is going to be her low point to her presidency to date) but as a president she's done a better job than all her predecessors and I'm glad I got to shake her hand at my graduation.

How long did it take you to go back and piece that together in your estimation BTW? If you have an hour or several to spare, go back and dig up the really old stuff from when Gamble was a freshman about how good the football team was going to be three years ago. Now that's some funny 20/20 hindsight!

5shipsago

Ebb & flow, that's what college sports is. It's hard to stay on top and recruiting is the focal point. The "U" should revel in this basketball accomplishment because with all the player losses from this squad, it could be back to reality next year.
The baseball team keeps losing top flight players to the draft coming from High School and that keeps hindering the teams ability to stay consistent and it seems every year we have a top flight pitcher go down with a Tommy John.
The football team is on it's way back from a long vacation and in my estimation we are still 5 or 6 players away from getting back to the top. Good Recruiting & coaching stability, that's what we need.

CanesAllDay

I have to laugh at the people that were calling for Shalala to be fired after our loss to FGCU. Some people don't get that athletics is only one portion of a president's responsibility.

Next time, think before you post.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Just thinking about some of the recent comments. Do you really think the school is simply not supporting the athletics dept?

Despite the overall average performance, I think football will improve though I don't see us competing with the elites anymore.

If the answer is yes, why? Do they cut corners in sports to pay the bills elsewhere. Just thinking someone closer to the school might have insight.

Posted by: USAFCane | November 13, 2012 at 10:01 PM

Need to pay the going rate in some sports, need to cut the dead weight in others, need to get the lifetime achievment coaches a nice gold watch and upgrade in others, USAF. The basketball team is an embarrassment right now, we can't handle Fl Gul Coast, yet we're supposed to be able to handle UNC, NC State, or Duke? I guess that joke is on us. For my own santity, I can't support this team, Maybe I'm 100% wrong, but I don't think I'll miss much. I honestly don't remember seeing UM be so awful at all three major sports at the same time, yet here we are on year 3 or 4 of overall mediocrity.

November 13, 2012 at 09:05 PM

The "best team in school history" per Larranaga. Really? So good we kept it close against a D2 team in an exhibition game? That get embarrassed against a school nobody outside of the State of FLorida has ever heard of, a team with no basketball history? Thank God Eichorst did leave. Resigning the women's basketball coach will go down as his biggest achievement. Larranaga should offer his resignation on the spot if this is the best he can do.

A great president and a great AD are needed now!!!

Gamble has been in college only slightly less time than this website has been in existence so he probably told Shane where the real fan commenting action has always been I bet 86, LOL.

Rocky over The Rock? Somebody got some explaining to do! I was going to say it was a bad day for MAC man losing to Bob Sagat, but then I realized he's lucky he went to that pedo university and they didn't make the tournament this year so he would have lost out to Gene Kelly on that list instead if they had been decent this season.

Ironically, the alumni association website doesn't even list MAC man, or his pet mutant roommate from college, unsurprisingly, as a famous living alumni;

So much for the 'most recognizable brand in college football.'

Kiri - talk to us when you get to be my age. And age that listened to music on reel to reel or 8 track.
