I hate to be the one to have to break it to you but that rancid stench you smell could be what is left of the rotting corpse of the once proud University of Miami baseball program.
For the first time in forever, your Miami Hurricanes hardballers are in danger of missing the ACC tournament and the NCAA playoffs after dropping two of three games to the worst team in the ACC: The Boston College Golden Eagles.
Guess how many games the Golden Eagles have won this season overall and in the ACC? Go ahead, take a guess, I'll wait.
OK, the numbers are precisely EIGHT and TWO, which also happens to be exactly how many games BC (8-35, 2-21 ACC) took from Miami this weekend in their three game series in chilly Chestnut Hill, MA.
The Hurricanes' record on the season now stands at 29-18 and 11-13 in the ACC which qualifies them for next to last in the Coastal Division of the ACC.
Ooh-ooh, that smell.
In the first game on Friday UM managed to score ZERO runs. My expert college baseball sources tell me that it is really hard to win a game when you don't score any runs but that is still unconfirmed at this time. Miami followed that up with a 5-0 win on Saturday in what would have to be considered an offensive explosion for the low scoring Canes.
On Sunday, in another pitchers' duel at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond, the Miami Hurricanes fell to Boston College in extra innings by a final score of 3-2.
The Eagles tied the game late on a two-run homerun in the eighth inning, and a walk-off homer from catcher Matt Pare off Miami reliever AJ Salcines with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning sent the Eagles to a series victory.
Following up stellar starts by Chris Diaz and Bryan Radziewski in the first two games of the series, sophomore lefthander Andrew Suarez twirled a gem of his own Sunday afternoon to help guide the visitors to a rubber-match win over the Eagles (to continue a strong stretch for Miami pitchers). The Miami, Fla., native and reigning ACC Pitcher of the Week allowed five hits on the afternoon, striking out seven while walking just one in eight innings.
Suarez, coming off a complete game shutout of then-No. 12 Clemson last time out, was unable to finish off a series win for Miami despite another great start. The Hurricanes' starting rotation allowed just two earned runs over 25.0 combined innings against the Eagles, dominating to the tune of an 0.72 ERA over the weekend series.
The team’s offense struggled to generate much offense off Eagles' starter Andrew Chin, who yielded just two hits in the game's first six innings - both singles to junior Tyler Palmer.
Ooh-ooh, that smell.
The Hurricanes offense broke through in the seventh, aided by four defensive miscues from Boston College in the inning. With Alex Hernandez and Chantz Mack on base via two errors from the Eagles' infield, a failed pick-off attempt from Chin to second base sailed into centerfield to advance both runners into scoring position. A sacrifice fly from Fieger gave Miami a 1-0 advantage, while a well-executed hit-and-run down the first base line by senior Alex San Juan scored Mack from his perch at second to make it 2-0.
San Juan would advance to third on a steal and error charged to Boston College catcher Matt Pare, but was stranded there after a strikeout from freshman Christopher Barr ended the inning.
Ooh-ooh, that smell.
Boston College tied up the game in the eighth on a two-run homerun from pinch-hitter Chris Shaw. Suarez, who entered the eighth having retired the previous five batters, allowed a double to pinch-hitter Jimmy Dowdell before Shaw took him deep to rightfield to tie the game at 2-2. Suarez would retire the next three batters in order, finishing off his eighth and final inning.
Salcines (3-4) pitched well in relief of Suarez, allowing just two hits during his first 2.2 innings of relief. But with two outs in the 11th, Pare lined a ball deep over the rightfield fence, sending Boston College to a 3-2 walk-off win with the team’s second homerun of the game.
Ooh-ooh, that smell.
The Hurricanes will return to Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field Friday for their series opener with St. John’s University. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

Yeah, but even the likes of Kosar,Erickson, AND Dorsey did't have those qualities, until they took ownership of the offense.
Posted by: CaneRock | April 28, 2013 at 04:34 PM
Uh, excuse me but NO WAY!
Kosar was a born leader and was as firey and vocal as they came. I hope that U remember in the National Championship game he told none other than his head coach the legendary Howard Schnellenberger and OC Gary Stevens whio wanted to throw the ball: "Let's play F$%#&* football!" He beat out Testaverde, who had MORE physical talent then him, because he was a LEADER.
Erickson was more subdude than Kosar but still command of the huddle and the team. Erickson was the most like Morris in temperment and throwing style.
Dorsey was also a born leader and it was his team. Dorsey was highly respected and a hard worker in the film room and in practice. He was bright eyed and sharp as a tack and could read defenses in his sleep.

So nobody cares bout the fact that our canes is running from a supposed azz whuppin from LSU...again?
Posted by: 4-Real | April 28, 2013 at 06:55 PM
First of all it's our canes not yours 4-Real, and second of all no I'm tired of the SEC dictating schedules. They won't play UM in November so why should we play them in August? Nice try though troll!
Go 'canes!
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | April 28, 2013 at 07:03 PM
That's not a fact 4-Real. Its your opinion. Could have a lot to do with business agendas and who we are already planning on playing. Further more that far out Miami could be the one "whuppin" LSU. Next years schedule is the only one that matters to me right now.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | April 28, 2013 at 07:06 PM
Lemme guess the games in Georgia or Louisiana? UM has a Freshman QB? That's how they schedule. If LSU is feeling froggy then schedule a home and home and see what happens.
Go 'canes!
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | April 28, 2013 at 07:08 PM
4-Real, where's the link because I haven't heard anything about not signing up for the kickoff game in Atlanta but for some reason I do remember it being floated previously as a possibility?
The schedule has been scaled back so much in the next few years out of conference that The Pipe wouldn't recognize the mantra of the day, "two warmups, possibly no road games other than in Tampa out of conference, maybe only the five ACC mandated road games all year." The ACC even split up the Chokie/Villiage People impersonator road games to even and odd years now. This schedule most reminds me of the '83 one going into the year, win the War Canoe, beat up a bunch of teams that had obvious weaknesses going from last year, hope the chips nationally fall in place to get a shot at 'the best ever, three in a row, four out of five 'Tide' team of a century.
It's not hard to fix it though, just look at who claims more all time championships than UM, and schedule the home and home.
Bonus points if the school scheduled is in one of the states SOUP got broken down in the UM HOF analysis last week or so.

Posted by: 4-Real | April 28, 2013 at 09:58 PM
Ss cane the articles on Pain & Gain are amazing. The past several years with the decline of the football program our early schedules were down right stupid and exposed the lack of guidance under the past several AD's. Playing LSU in the opener would be down right crazy. Let's get back to being a top 5 program before we act as if we are the Canes of old.
Posted by: Canesteelers | April 28, 2013 at 10:06 PM
Sports buzz for the LSU thing? I'm with UM on this. If LSU wants to schedule a home and home with UM then I'm all in. But they don't, they scour the ACC schedule looking for a name school that has an apparent weakness and then they try to schedule that team to play in the heart of SEC country for their marquee opener.
It's bull sh**! Then they play their three patsies while the other conferences play each other. It's worked great for them but the rest of the country is on to the formula. I would turn down their offer and counter with the home & home.

The 10th-ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team won its first ACC Championship on Sunday, after defeating 30th-ranked and rival Florida State, 4-1, at the North Carolina’s Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
“My players are starting to learn things about themselves that they never knew existed,” said UM head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews. “For a coach, that is really cool.
“I am so happy for them and this institution. Conference titles are huge for everyone!”
Sophomore Lina Lileikite was named the tournament’s most outstanding performer after claiming her second win in as many days from her No. 3 position. Her 6-2, 6-2 victory over the Seminoles’ Mia Vriens gave the Canes a 3-1 lead before junior Melissa Bolivar clinched the team’s first title.
Against second-ranked North Carolina on Saturday, Lileikite won a three-set match over the Tar Heels’ 36th-ranked Whitney Kay, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. Combined with her win over Vriens, that was more than enough to earn the heralded award.
After capturing yet another doubles point, Monique Albuquerque extended the Canes lead to 2-0 with her brisk, 6-4, 6-1, win over FSU’s Kerrie Cartwright at the No. 5 position.
The Seminoles’ Amy Sargeant gave her team their only point, downing Clementina Riobueno, 6-2, 6-1, before Lileikite won her match.
Bolivar’s 6-3, 6-4 straight-set victory over Kristina Schleich was all that Miami would need to clinch the win. Both Stephanie Wagner and Kelsey Laurente will still competing on Courts 1 and 2, respectively, when the match came to a victorious end.
After rain halted doubles play just 30 minutes into the match at the Cary Tennis Center, both teams made their way to the nearby Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the University of North Carolina’s campus.
The young Hurricanes, ranked 10th in the nation have been a story all season long. Four collegiate newcomers make up the majority of Miami’s roster and each has played a huge role in helping the Canes earn their first conference title since joining the league in 2004.
“This team was just so tough throughout the tournament,” said Yaroshuk-Tews. To be so young and come away with this win is amazing.”
Two of the newcomers helped set the tone for Miami in earning the interrupted doubles point. Albuquerque and Riobueno sealed the early point with an 8-5 win over the Noles’ Francesca Segarelli and Daneika Brothwick.
Up next for the Hurricanes will be the Division One Women’s Tennis Selection Show on April 30. The show will be aired on NCAA.com at 5:30 p.m. and will reveal who the Canes will face in the upcoming NCAA tournament.

Anywhere...home & home
Anytime...Anytime, any year
Florida...can't do it!
That theories alive and well!! I'm surprised UF didn't try to use realignment to duck UM this season!
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | April 28, 2013 at 11:43 PM
Miami already has a OOC game with Nebraska in 2014. The LSU game would of been played in Houston....thats a 4 hour drive from Baton Rouge which hardly makes it "neutral".
Posted by: The []_[] | April 29, 2013 at 09:07 AM
Not playing LSU, at least to open the year makes sense. This is not the 80's where you play anyone anywhere. Opening up the season against good teams has hurt Miami in recent years and most successful programs do not do it. If we opened the season against LSU, we would be breaking in a new starting QB against one of the nations top defenses. Also, dont we either have Nebraska or ND scheduled for 2014? It is one thing to play ONE tough out of conference game, but any more than that simply isnt smart, especially if your not in the SEC. Teams will have to go undefeated to make the new 4-team playoff system and even then a 1-loss SEC team might sneak in. Just makes no sense to do it..not in the college football world of today.

LB's Monday Morning Update on Perspective:
I assume the world didn't end since the Michel family jumped up to upper class. If there's any update on the forthcoming apocalypse, please let your friends here at Canespace know.
Every time I look at the 2013 schedule, the more beautiful it becomes. The Canes don't leave the state of Florida until October 17th (N.C.), and they return back the very next week. They've also got seven (!) home games, including the Gators. It's like Christmas came early, and even with the foul stench of the 2012 defense... there is absolutely no reason for this team to win less than 9 games. If such were to occur, it's absolutely time to start questioning the Golden regime.
To the emotionally-charged, illogical Spacer calling me a "fair weather" and "not real" fan, grow up. 1987 called, and they'd like their cassettes back.
Presuming the receivers stop dropping passes and Morris stays healthy, this offense has the opportunity to crack the top ten. It has every reason in the world to succeed.
Our linebacker depth is absolutely a mess given the last three years of graduations, injuries, and ascensions to community college. Three more are seniors and one (Perryman) could declare early. We need linebackers in a hurry, and Grace can't get to campus fast enough. I'd say it's safe to presume that Perryman, Kirby/Gaines, and Figeroua will be the starters come opening day (barring injury). McCord absolutely has no business being a linebacker, unless it's in a pure rush capacity (a la Kevin Greene). I don't know anything about Blue. Recruiting is paramount here for long-term health. We need bodies. Now.
It's assumed that we have three solid defensive tackles. I don't buy that at all. I'll take one at this point.
Inventing a pass rush is going to take creativity and perhaps new blood. McCord is absolutely the best rusher and it makes no sense to make him a linebacker. Shayon Green has taken a lot of heat, but he was the best player on the defensive line last year by far. All he did was lead the team with 67 tackles.
But he's a run stopper. That is absolutely a positive. The running games of many of the teams this year should be weaker.
As for Sony Michel: this could actually work out to the benefit of the Canes. I will not breach confidentiality, but I'm also not going to presume ignorance. The $EC has a virtually unlimited cashflow. It is also protected by the NCAA due to titles, revenue, and ratings. The only way the NCAA stops protecting the conference is for folks to start asking questions and for another power to rise to balance out the sway of the conference.
The NCAA will protect its ASSets, every time. There was virtually no chance for Michel to end up at UM because of the $EC. But perspective, please. He's a "diehard Cane but still committed to Georgia." Cane fan for life, but money talks. I'm not blaming the kid or the family. I understand. Life sucks, and if you can get ahead and secure your family's financial future... do it. Good for him.
But it's also a will thing. If you can't resist the temptation of the $EC, then are you really a Cane?
I saw Stephen Morris by himself WILL this team to at least two wins last year. Will. Leadership. Mental toughness. Golden's been preaching that to his team and the fanbase exhaustively since he stepped on campus. Imposing your will on another team is absolutely a necessary part of defeating an opponent. It's philosophical, but it's a part of this whole mess.
Point: Michel may not be cut out to be a Cane, and that's absolutely okay.
Also, it's not NSD. Best weed out the non-Canes before then. He's also not in a position of high need. See linebacker and defensive tackle. And it's recruiting, which in itself is paradoxical madness at best.
We beat these odds by winning, and this team has every opportunity to win right now. We win even more with a pass rush and catching catchable passes. Own this mediocre conference and win a freaking bowl game. Let's win.
Writer's Note: Soupers is tearing it up with the blogs. Let's give him a much deserved round of applause. Gratitude for the best place for orange and green news.

LB...Miami should be able to get a few DT's in this class. I think Clark is a lock and we have a good shot at valentine and some JUCO guys. I think a lot of it will have to do with D'Nos defense this year.

"1987 called, and they'd like their cassettes back."
Dude don't be knocking 1987, it was very, very good year and I had some of the best times of my life back then. I had cassett tapes of Aerosmith, Bad Company, REO and Van Halen rocking my car stereo in my metallic blue Olds Cutlass SS. It was happenin!
Of course 1987, apart from UM winning a National Championship, was not quite as good as 1986, but really good nonetheless.

Well, the schedule setting us up for success is not going to happen if we can't get some double teams on the DL. And didn't we depend on the offense last year? What happens when they have a bad day? See KSU and ND.
Not trying to be negative at all. Just being a realist and until I see some push from our DL, it'll be another 6-7 win season. And I seriously doubt you can blame the Golden regime. We don't reload like Bama. We're not reloading until 2 more years. Maybe 1, if we're lucky.
CFB sure does make a lot more money when guys leave SoFlo. Think about it. ;-)
