Miami’s 11-under round was one better than the Gamecocks duo of Steve Spurrier and Sterling Sharpe. With the victory in the 14-team field, The Hurricanes took home the first-place scholarship prize of $125,000.
Team Miami finished the front nine with five straight birdies to make the turn at 8-under, one stroke ahead of two-time defending champion Georgia Tech and two shots clear of South Carolina.
The Hurricanes and Yellow Jackets played stroke-for-stroke on the back nine until Miami pulled ahead with birdies on 16 and 17. The Gamecocks went birdie-eagle-birdie over the final three holes to make a run at Miami, but fell just short when Al Golden holed a five-foot putt for par on 18.
“South Carolina and Georgia Tech are really good teams. We had a lot of fun down the stretch and Gino hit some big putts to keep us in it,” Golden said. “We scrambled and got lucky down the stretch.”
“Hitting that 30-footer for par on 15 and another big putt on 17 were huge. We didn’t know they were so close on our heels until we finished 17,” Torretta said. “We just tried to stay within ourselves and we kept the ball in play. It just seemed to work today.”
Final official results from the 2013 Chick-fil-A Bowl Challenge including scholarship winnings:
1. Miami (Al Golden, Gino Torretta) -11 $125,000
2. South Carolina (Steve Spurrier, Sterling Sharpe) -10 $65,000
t3. Georgia Tech (Paul Johnson, Jon Barry) -9 $50,000
t3. Clemson (Dabo Swinney, Steve Fuller) -9 $50,000
5. Virginia Tech (Frank Beamer, Dell Curry) -8 $35,000
The Chick-fil-A Bowl Challenge is the country’s premier head coach and celebrity charity golf event featuring NCAA head coaches and former athletes and celebrities from the same school competing against their rivals for a share of a $520,000 scholarship purse.
In addition to the $520,000 scholarship purse, another $144,000 was generated for charitable organizations including Chick-fil-A’s WinShape Homes foster care program.
Over the last seven years, the event has contributed a total of $3.8 million in scholarship and charity, helping make the Chick-fil-A Bowl college football’s most charitable bowl game.

From CanesInsight via Canesport...
Travonte Valentine UPDATE
Here is what he is saying in a new article on canesport.
Palm Bay (FL) Bayside High School 4-star DL Travonte Valentine currently lists a top three of Miami, Alabama and Tennessee.
And he has one standing out on top.
"Miami is in the lead," he says.
Asked how big a lead the Canes have, he said, "Right now they're in a good position, but you never know."
UM will have a chance to get in an even better position this weekend - Valentine plans on taking an unofficial visit to the school.
"I just want to look around, check the campus out again, see how I like it," said Valentine, who lists 28 offers including Miami. "My visit last time was fun - that was last month."
He's taken other visits to Florida, Florida State, Clemson and South Carolina. He also plans summer visits that will include Alabama and Tennessee.
Valentine is in regular contact with Cane coaches Hurlie Brown and Jethro Franklin.
"They say how much of an impact I can make on the D line, how important I am to them, how quick I am off the ball," Valentine said.
Valentine says he decided on his top three based on "How their football teams play tough, how their defensive players are known to get drafted early."
And he says UM is in the lead because "It's the family (atmosphere), how things are, all the legendary people that have gone there."
Valentine says there's a chance he'll make a commitment in July but that he hopes to wait until his birthday Nov. 15.
"I love Miami and if I had to pull the trigger for how I feel about Miami I will," he said. "But right now I just have to stay calm, stay focused and see where this path will go."

Jones...well, hey, the coaches didn't mention Him either, so WHY! should WE! LMAO!

Note that Golden and Saban are on the same side, but as far away from each other as you can get. Urban looks sour as hell.
That email could send a Canes fan into a rage. I'll advise all folks involved to keep quiet, but I'll say this:
If UM doesn't have a top 50 defense, heads will roll (and friendships won't matter). On a positive note, I'm glad we're attacking defensive prospects.
Hooray for Malcolm Lewis! He's a good dude that deserves the spotlight.

LB..I have said it numerous times..Goldens tenure will succeed or fail based on D'No. If there isn't drastic change and D'No doesn't get fired, Golden will fail. NOT because Golden isn't a good coach and doing great in many areas, but our D is horrible and there is enough talent for it to not be that way. I also think it is effecting defensive recruits.

Lockhart may be in some caca from what I recently heard and Jones wears #15 and is not in the three deep and may be a possible transfer later on.
The one to watch for is: Jontavious Carter

I agree. It reminds me of the way Shannon hitched his wagon to J12 to sink or swim. Seems like Golden's wagon is hitched to D'No sink or swim.
Somebody throw them a life jacket, QUICK!

UMike...Carter is 6-2 and 210 and red-shirted last year. He wears #81, is a BIG target and was a standout this Spring.
Posted by: SOUP | May 01, 2013 at 09:13 AM
Best of luck to Dewey, but by all accounts Crow was ahead of him. Add in Ryan Williams and Kevin Olsen to battle for the 2014 starting job, and I can completely understand trying to nab opportunity elsewhere. Also, there's a chance UM brings in two additional QB's this year (I doubt that the current commit stays).

Someone please record this lol..SOUP agreed with me on something negative lol
Posted by: UMike | May 01, 2013 at 09:36 AM
UMike...I prefer the term "fair and balanced" rather than "negative". LOL
I can be critical or negative when I have to be and when it is justified (see my baseball article from the other day: "Hey, What's That Smell?"), but I just try to approach everything from as positive a perspective as possible until I am given no other choice than to be negative.
So yes I admit I spin things to the positive maybe more than most but when the spin no longer works or doesn't seem to be valid anymore I am left no choice but to call it for what it is.
The bottom line is this: Our Defense HAS TO BE a top 50 defense (in total D and scoring D) THIS YEAR or heads MUST roll.

I'ma sound like "Da Herb", but D-LINE! D-LINE! D-LIIIIINE!!!
And this may sound funny, but the biggest problem I see with the D-Line is...We have too many kids that we recruited as DEs, that have grown into DTs! Either that, or D'Onofrio has a FETISH! LMAO!
I mean really, when's the last time we've had a kid that was 6'4-6'5 plus,260 plus, that had the physical ability to get after the passer...Calais Campbell?

Kansas State transfer Angel Rodriguez is heading to Miami, multiple sources told CBSSports.com.
The 5-foot-11 point guard, who spent his first two seasons with the Wildcats, will attempt to get a waiver from the NCAA to play next season due to health issues with his family, sources told CBSSports.com. Rodriguez played high school ball at Krop High near Miami, and his family lives in Puerto Rico. Rodriguez said he was leaving Kansas State to be near his family.
Rodriguez averaged 11.4 points and 5.2 assists last season for a Kansas State team that won 27 games.
If granted a waiver by the NCAA, he'd step in and fill the void created when point guard Shane Larkin decided to leave for the NBA. The 'Canes also lose the rest of their starting lineup. Next year, though, will likely be a rebuilding season in Coral Gables, anyway, and it could be more beneficial for Jim Larranaga and his staff if Rodriguez sits out next season and has two years remaining.

Good for UM basketball.
As for the Soupers being negative, that's oversimplfying. Criticism is GOOD. We critique the strengths (OL, tailback, Morris) and weaknesses (DL, LB depth) because we want them to WIN.
-----------
Interesting discussion on defensive line.
"I mean really, when's the last time we've had a kid that was 6'4-6'5 plus,260 plus, that had the physical ability to get after the passer...Calais Campbell?"
On the entire defensive line (including the six that will probably play and excluding the freshmen: Chickillo, Green, Hamilton, Pierre, Porter, Robinson), we're averaging 286.
The ends? 270. The tackles? 301. I think the size is okay, and completely comparable size-wise to elite pass rushers.
Green is solid and consistent, but he's a run stopper. Chickillo is streaky. Perhaps he had a sophomore slump (like Spence). Hamilton is an unknown. I don't trust the defensive tackles at all. Putting McCord off the edge is idiotic. He's easily the best pass rusher we have.
Either A. McCord is purely a rush linebacker or B. D'Onofrio is simply insane. Based on the information we share in private, I'm leaning towards B.
If you're a defensive line recruit, you'd have to be nuts not to come here. If you have a good work ethic and any talent at all... you could start day one on a historical power in a mediocre conference with a guaranteed BCS appearance, play against one of the best offensive lines in the country, NFL pipeline, and a top 40 education. Dude X has a guaranteed spotlight.
Muhammad and Kamalu have a shot to nab it day one. I hope they're ready, because they could absolutely be the difference between 12 wins and 10.

Or 8 wins or 10?
Posted by: SOUP | May 01, 2013 at 01:15 PM
Given the schedule, this team won't win less than 9 games unless complete catastrophy strikes. I'm leaning towards 10-12 because we have an experienced quarterback and our opponents are mostly mediocre to awful.
FAU, Savannah, USF, Wake, Duke, UVA, and Pitt should be a given 7 wins. Duke lost their QB.
Va. Tech's running game is as bleak as Tim Tebow's passing proficency. Georgia Tech is at home.
That's nine wins. I'm leaning slightly to 10, but 9 is my prediction unless D'Onofrio unretards himself and puts McCord on the edge and creates a pass rush.

If you can keep the Head Ball Coach out of first place in a golf tournament, both you and your partner are pretty decent at the game to outright good.
Like I said, he'll always have golf coaching to fall back on even if he'll be coaching the women's team.

Roger Kuznia Sporting News
With Shane Larkin off to the NBA, the Miami Hurricanes lack a point guard. They may have one option with incoming football freshman Corn Elder, who told Sporting News via Twitter that he’ll be playing basketball, too.
Elder told Sporting News that he and the 6-7 Derrick Griffin, also an incoming freshman for Al Golden’s football team, will be playing basketball for Jim Larranaga’s squad.
The University of Miami could not confirm the news Tuesday afternoon.
Larranaga said in the Larkin news conference on Sunday that he would inquire about the status of both players. The 5-11 Elder was named The Tennessean’s football and basketball player of the year this past season, while the 6-7 Griffin could be a valuable addition to the Hurricanes’ frontcourt. He told 247Sports.com that he wants to play college basketball, too.
