Jack, from your comment on the previous blog....I think that Shannon could recruit. Two factors:

1) Player development...his players tended to not grow in skills as expected, with the exception of Leonard Hankerson who saw Mark Duper for outside coaching. Too many changes at OC and DC. WAY too many changes,

2) Early departures. There was a high number of early departures last year that thinned out this year's NFL class.

Also keep in mind that Arthur Brown, originally a Shannon recruit was drafted in the second round. Of course he had to go to K State to develop into the player he became.

Recruiting Update from Pete Ariz at CanesInsight...

**With Spring practice starting for schools in South Florida today, I thought it would be a good time to kick things back into gear. Here are the latest happenings on the recruiting front for Miami.

**The recent failures at DT have left a portion of fans feeling wary about Miami's chances with Chaminade star Khairi Clark. There was even a thread on here tonight with people concerned about a tweet regarding Clark not mentioning Miami in his "schools of high interest" (http://canesinsight.com/threads/5263...-interest-quot), but I've been reassured multiple times by a close source that Miami is in very, very good shape and that nothing has changed recently. I can understand why some are being cautious with him, but Clark is a different case and has a good head on his shoulders.

**A prospect that I see Miami taking a hard look at in the coming weeks is Fort Lauderdale LB Jaboree Williams. I caught up with him three weeks ago (http://canesinsight.com/content/1676...nique-prospect ) and he has since been offered by Wake Forest, Marshall, and most recently Pittsburgh. With a rather weak linebacker class in South Florida this year and Miami's depth at the position decreasing with the losses of Gabe Terry and Eddie Johnson, Williams is a prospect that continues to rise. An impressive spring could really put him on the map with larger schools and Miami has a great opportunity to swoop in early on him.

**Although this isn't a surprise to some, the smart money on the next commitment is LB Mike Smith from Northwestern. Smith is a prospect who I've thought very highly of since the first time I saw him play. I went to 4-5 MNW games last season and he made plays in every single one of them. Smith played primarily as a rush-end with his hand in the dirt last season, but is making the transition to linebacker this spring. I've seen him multiple times this offseason and it's obvious that he's been putting in work in the weight room. Look for him to announce his intentions at the end of spring ball.

**The hot topic right now is the running back situation. Sony Michel to Georgia was inevitable for a few weeks now, Dalvin Cook switched from Clemson to UF this last month, and Joseph Yearby will remain committed to Miami as long as James Coley is here. The obvious goal for Miami is to flip either Michel or Cook, and that is definitely possible, but it is nearly impossible to make predictions on that right now. There are factors with Cook that are in Miami's favor, while there are others against Miami. Cook's brother, DeAndre Burnett (basketball signee), will be a positive influence for the 'Canes and I suspect Cook will be around the school a lot once basketball season starts since the two are close. On the other hand, I've continuously been told that Yearby and Cook (current teammates at Central) would preferably not play with each other at the next level. The bottom-line is that signing day is so far away and situations like this change so frequently.

**Here are some updates I received on 2013 signees via text message and what they are focusing on as they plan to begin their Miami careers in a matter of months:

Devante Bond: "I've been working hard. I'm 240 right now and faster and quicker than before. Been doing 2-a-days getting right for this season coming up!! Working hard on the field and weight room!!"

Augustus Edwards: "A lot of lifting and speed training"

Jamal Carter: "I been putting in work at Shaq gym. Squating, benching, pull-ups, curls, and I been running track trying to get faster. Also running the 40 with the parachute. A lot of stuff. Trying to go in there besting."

--Carter also added he has been putting in work with former Southridge teammate and current FIU defensive back Jeremiah McKinnon

I will be getting updates with more signees over the next few weeks.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.–Defensive tackle Travonte Valentine is one of the top rated prospects in Florida for the Class of 2014. The Palm Bay (Fla.) Bayside product participated in the ESS Combine at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., this past Sunday putting in some extra work and performed very well.

“[I did good],” Valentine said. “It was fun out here and it was good practice out here for me. I did what I do best and played football.”

While “Alabama, Tennessee and Miami” remain his top three without one clear leader, the Canes are making a hard push for his services. Coach Hurlie Brown has made a lot of headway with the former Florida commit.

“I’m visiting Miami Friday,” Valentine said. “I felt like home when I went to Miami and I was like ‘wow, this campus is amazing,’ so I can’t wait.”

Even though he had just visited UM’s campus at the end of March, Valentine wants to get another look. “I just want to go out there and have fun. I want to enjoy life and see some things I didn’t see before.”

Valentine, 6-foot-4 and 300-pounds, is planning to make his final college announcement in November.

Another visit coming up it's looking good for him but it is still early.

at this point I'd take a recruiting class that was nothing but D players.....scoring points isn't our problem

With the exception of another RB or two, a couple WR's and maybe 1 more OL, i think the rest of the class will be on the D side of the ball..imo

According to Rivals Corn to play 2 positions as a freshman.

There IT is right there.

Defense is paramount, and the only way to fix the depth (unfortunately) is recruiting. Defensive tackles and linebackers are paramount, and it wouldn't surprise me if Golden went to the northeast to fill it out. Taking three elite defensive tackles wouldn't hurt a bit. Hell, I'd take four.

We also need at least three linebackers, and one who can play right away.

I'm not concerned about tailback, offensive line, or receiver at all. Taking a QB every year is smart for depth purposes, but the only vital offensive position is Ricky Town for 2015. Other than that, Ermon Lane?
-------------
Depth Chart Thoughts and Questions:

WR: I like Hurns a lot. Still not sold on Scott or Dorsett due to drops. Lewis will help.
TE: I expect Sandland/Dobard to be starting here by midseason.
FB: I guess Gus Edwards would be backing up Hagens?
RB: Is Corn Elder the next Dallas Crawford (RB/WR hybrid)?
OL: One last ride for Susan's man. Sunny Odogwu!
DL: Any new positive news would make me happy.
LB: McCord is an edge rusher, period. How does Kirby look?
DB: Is there someone not on the two deep we should pay attention to?
P/K: Good call bringing in O'Donnell.

SOUP

"TE: I expect Sandland/Dobard to be starting here by midseason."

Don't count out Clive Walford so fast, but if he falters Sandland is the most likely replacement this year and Dobard more likely next year.

INTERESTING FACT: Miami only had 11 scholarship players on the men's basketball team last season even though the NCAA allows 13.

INTERESTING FACT: Miami currently has 5 open scholarships on the men's basketball team for the 2013-14 season.

INTERESTING FACT: Keep in mind that Cornelius Elder and Derrick Griffin want to play both football and basketball at Miami.

That is all.

UMike

I know offense is not a priority, but you have to keep players coming in. We cannot have gaps in years at skill positions like we did under RS. So while offense shouldn't be the focus of this class, you still need to take a handful of RB's and WR's, especially if you can get elite ones like Lane, Dixson, Yearby etc...But I do agree we need major debt at LB and DT

LB... I like Hurns sure too but he can't make the explosive plays that Dorsett & Scott makes. Give game changers. Also, Hurns isn't durable. As for Wafford. He's gotten better every year. He'll improve more this year & be the clear cut starter. Watch...

LB

"LB... I like Hurns sure too but he can't make the explosive plays that Dorsett & Scott makes."

But yet, if they don't catch the ball consistently...

UMike

I definitely think Walford did enough last year when he got the chances to be a starter..imo

I didn't know that FSU had six new assistants. Transitioning to a new QB, too. Perhaps they're a touch overranked?
