The Atlantic Coast Conference again demonstrated its strength during the recently –concluded NFL Draft, as the ACC had a total of 31 players selected, the second highest of any conference in the nation. The ACC had 10 of the first 51 players chosen in the Draft, or produced almost 20% of the most-valued players in this year's draft.
By having 31 of its players tabbed for 2013 NFL Draft, the ACC continued a streak that now stretches to nine consecutive years with at least 31 players chosen in the NFL Draft or every year since 2005, the year the Conference became a 12-team league. That is the second-longest streak in the nation.
The ACC had the first quarterback chosen in Florida State's EJ Manuel, who was selected 16th by the Buffalo Bills and the first offensive guard taken in North Carolina Jonathan Cooper, who was tabbed 7th by the Arizona Cardinals.
The ACC is fast becoming the preferred training ground for professional quarterbacks as the Conference had more starting NFL quarterbacks lead their teams into the NFL playoffs this year (4—Russell Wilson of Seattle (NC State), Matt Schaub of Houston (Virginia), Matt Ryan of Atlanta (Boston College) and Christian Ponder of Minnesota (Florida State) than any other conference. In all, the ACC had six starting QBs in the NFL which tied for the most of any conference in the nation.
In this year's draft the ACC had three quarterbacks selected—Florida State's EJ Manuel, NC State's Mike Glennon and Duke's Sean Renfree—again, more than any other conference in the nation.
Florida State had a total of 11 players chosen in the draft, the most of any school in the nation. National champion Alabama was tied for 2nd with LSU (9), while Florida and Georgia were tied for 4th (8 each). Ten of the 12 current ACC schools had at least one player selected in this year's NFL Draft.
Miami had two players chosen in the draft, CB Brandon McGee in the 5th round and RB Mike James in the 6th round. That continues the Hurricanes' streak of having at least one player drafted in every NFL Draft since 1975, a string of 39 consecutive years. Since 1962, Miami has only had one year when it did not have a player drafted—1974—having at least one player in every NFL Draft in 51 of 52 years.
The Atlantic Coast Conference enjoyed a very successful first day of the 2013 National Football League draft Thursday, with no fewer than six ACC players selected among the first 28 overall picks in the first round, the second highest total of any conference nationally.
The six first-round selections is the highest total for the League since the 2008 Draft when seven ACC players were taken in the first round. The six draftees gives the ACC a total of 51 first-round draft selections since 2005, the second-highest total of any conference nationally.
In all, the SEC led all leagues with 12 players selected on the first round, followed by the ACC with 6, the Pac-12 (5), the Big 12 (3) and the Big Ten, Big East, the Mid-American and Conference USA with one player chosen each.
The SEC tied the ACC’s record for first-round selections set in 2005 when the ACC was a 12-team league. The SEC counted 14 teams this year.
This year marked the second straight year an ACC player has been chosen in the Top 10. Boston College’s Luke Kuechly was chosen 9th last year on the first round. Florida State’s EJ Manuel was the first quarterback taken in the 2013 NFL Draft when he was tabbed 16th overall by the Buffalo Bills.
2013 ACC First-Round Selections:
Jonathan Cooper, UNC Arizona Cardinals Guard 7th
EJ Manuel, Florida State Buffalo Bills Quarterback 2nd
Bjoern Werner, Florida State Indianapolis Colts Defensive End 24th
Xavier Rhodes, Florida State Minnesota Vikings Cornerback 25th
DeAndre Hopkins, Clemson Houston Texans Wide Receiver 27th
Sylvester Williams, UNC Denver Broncos Defensive Tackle 28th

Look at Hurns numbers, then look at Dorsett & Scott's numbers. You can fix catching. You can't fix exposiveness & durablility...

Posted by: UMike | April 30, 2013 at 01:40 PM
And I like Walford's potential, He just has to show up in the BIG! games.
And I like Coley's run after the catch ability, those skills will definitely transition to the next level.

ALL wr's drop passes, nfl and college, but the good wr's get a lot of attempts to make catches
Posted by: WWIN | April 30, 2013 at 01:49 PM
LB,
Even with the drops Dorsett & Scott still produce WAY more than Hurns. Which means they get open more & make things happen. WTF??? C'mon maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan

That's riiiiiight...GRIFFIN!
I think Lewis would've been on that list too, He has that ability to RAC too.
Posted by: CaneRock | April 30, 2013 at 01:52 PM
I think ALL of our WR's are productive and could start just about anywhere in the Country..BUT...Dorsett and Scott are definitely the big play guys. With that said, Hurns will get you those tough yards and make the touch catches..so we really need them ALL
Posted by: UMike | April 30, 2013 at 02:02 PM
"Oh yeah... & they stay healthy. I don't get your logic. Shyt. I don't think you get your logic on this subject..."
That's fine. But yes, I get my own logic. I totally understand where you're coming from, but those dropped passes have lowered the win ceiling significantly since '06. There are too many examples to cite and too much in nature.
I'd kill to be proven wrong. Seriously. We do need all of them. We also need a Coley/Griffin to come in and snatch it by the throat. We haven't had a "lights out" threat in a while. Maybe Scott is that guy. I hope he shows up, because if so... we're going to win a crapton of games.
Posted by: LB | April 30, 2013 at 03:14 PM
Hurns gets no credit for contributing as both a freshman and sophomore consistently, thus proving he already wasn't just a flash in the pan?
His numbers Harris as the primary trigger-man behind center;
Allen Hurns 31 415 13.4 4
Scott and Dorsett hardly made an impact with less than 15 catches between them playing behind Streeter and Benjarmin.

George McDonald's article on the last post make me glad he was gone before someone could accuse him of bringing that CRACK around the program! What is he smokin'? Seriously, Syracuse had some great ones in the 60's but will never have another back like that or The Duke!

WURD ON DA SKREETZ IZ:
SM17 has to learn how to understand a playbook and take some f n time to watch film on what he did wrong and not just good playz he brags all the time on.
Flowers has great footwork when pass blockin or run blockin. His strength is unreal when makin contact with DL and just crushes LBs tryin to come off edge. When we watched his film I didnt realize how quick he could block the DL and get to the 2nd level defenders on run playz. Hes the most complete OL I seen here in many years. Aint a doubt he keeps ballin Miami fans wont be seein a sr. year from him. Art has created a straight up MAN just goin into year 2. Sh$# even last year I seen that boi block that 350lb Plug and tossin him like he was 150lb CB. I thought Art was goin to dry hump Flowers cause he was bout as I seen him. The part that has NFLU droolin is that he could put on 25/30lbs and still be in great shape. Thats f n scary.
Posted by: SOUP | April 30, 2013 at 04:18 PM
Hurns ain't do shit his frosh year either. Most frosh don't. But then to compare them to a SR & redshirt JR during their frosh year is rediculous. Why didn't you menrion that both Scott & Dorsett's numbers their sophomore years, are both better than Hurns career best season. Duuuuuh...

I love our receiver group, but if I am Morris and its 3rd and 5, I'm gonna chuck the rock real hard at Hurns. Kid takes a beating and always hangs on. Dorsett, Waters, Lewis and Scott are definately more skilled, but if I have to get a first down, Hurns is my guy. His ability to catch in traffic is the best on the team.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | April 30, 2013 at 04:26 PM
SOUP, that is very concerning about SM17. He needs to understand QB is for nerds. To be great, you gotta nerd out in that film room.

To Golden's credit, at every position on offense, we are no longer DEPENDING on the play of some Johnny Freshman. Its all depth now. We are getting there SLOWLY on defense. Our scheme is so awful on D though I wonder if any amount of talent will help?

You'd this SM17 would know the drill after having watched JH12 rest on his laurels. How did that end up for JH12 Morris?
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | April 30, 2013 at 05:06 PM
Coke, you're right about the years of eligibility, my point remains, anybody can have a good year and get a target placed on them as a result, if you can still produce when your number is getting game-planed for every week, it's worth a little more than someone who's yet to show they can handle that attention from the opposition.
I think Golden should release a video about winning a golf tournament with his part time spring QB who already owns a Heisman and has no eligibility left to celebrate this big victory. If this football coaching thing continues on the pace it has for him at UM he'll always have a fallback option of coaching golf apparently, just don't expect him to get off the hole if he's on his third stroke and more than 10 yards from the marker however Hurricane golf fans.

I'm more concerned about the OTHER team having 3 strokes & more than 10. We've GOT to stop THEM from holing out every time!
Ugh... we don't seem to be moving in the right direction on D...
