This history lesson is brought to you by the UM Sports Hall of Fame:
Talk about "Being On The Clock", former University of Miami Hurricanes football players set an all-time record by having SIX Canes selected in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft!
Selected at #5 was Sean Taylor by the Washington Redskins, followed by Kellen Winslow at #6 for the Cleveland Browns, Jonathan Vilma was selected by the New York Jets at #12, D.J Williams taken by the Denver Broncos at #17, and the Miami Dolphins picked Vernon Carey with pick # 19 and Vince Wolfork was the 21st pick by the New England Patriots.
That is a total of SIX Canes taken in the first 21 picks of the 2004 NFL Draft.
Known officially as the "NFL Player Selection Meeting", it was held at a theater at Madison Square Garden in New York and telecast live on ESPN. The six players selected give UM a total of 19 players who have been taken in the first round over the 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 drafts.
That four-year total is an all-time record for any college football program.
Miami's 10 first-rounders over the last two years surpasses the mark set by UM in 2001 and 2002 and then again in 2002 and 2003. The previous record was seven set by USC in 1968-69 and matched by Notre Dame in 1993-94.
Prior to the last four years, Miami's previous best two-year total was five, achieved three times (1987-88, 1988-89 and 2000-01). Florida State also produced five first-round lections in 1995-96, as did Tennessee in 1991-92.
Hopefully in the very near future we are winning championships and churning out 1st round picks like the period you just described in this blog 86. Hope you had a blast in South Florida the last couple of days. Go Canes.

Also, haven't heard much about Corn Elder lately... What's his status?
Posted by: roachcane77 | April 25, 2013 at 07:22 PM
Corn is all good and ALL Cane. He will be ready to rock come Fall ball.

Terrance...the night at the ballpark was delicious. The weather was remarkable given that it is late April. The Titanic Brewery was the usual good times, the Wednesday night $1 stadium hot dogs hit the spot (mustard and onions) but the Mark Light milkshake was the clincher! I had the Nestor Special: coffee ice cream with hot fudge mixed in: YUMMY!

Dolphins pick Dion? HUH?
Posted by: SOUP | April 25, 2013 at 10:32 PM
That's awesome Soup. Yes I was wondering what was your thoughts on your Dolphins pick. Hopefully my Ravens pick is good and it's not Manti lol. Cant wait to see Corn this fall. Titanic Brewery is awesome. I got to try that Mark Light Milkshake and U cant beat 1 dollar hot dogs. Go Canes.

Aparently Ireland is working some angle with KC that will still get the 'phins the tackle they need. If they pull it off great, but my money is on Ireland outsmarting himself again!
Go Dolphins!

Dang man. Butch's boys still getting drafted in the NFL. We should bring him in as a football consultant. And bring back Soldinger also.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | April 25, 2013 at 11:47 PM
I thought it was good move Sota'.
The Dolphins needed somebody opposite Wake, to make Brady VERY! UNcomfortable.
Posted by: CaneRock | April 25, 2013 at 11:49 PM
I hear ya Canerock, but Miami has to replace Long or the draft is a wash in my opinion.
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | April 26, 2013 at 12:04 AM
I like the pick by my Ravens.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | April 26, 2013 at 12:09 AM
Should have brought butch back as head coach. Another sad case of hurt pride. :(
Posted by: 4-Real | April 26, 2013 at 12:11 AM
I like the pick by your Ravens too Terrance, mainly because we won't have to play against Elam on September 7!
My favorite player in the 1st round is Jarvis Jones from Georgia! That kid is a man child, a beast!
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | April 26, 2013 at 12:35 AM
Butch? Still whining about Butch? Are you 4-Real?
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | April 26, 2013 at 12:37 AM
I'm really happy my Chargers picked up D.J. Fluker. We needed tackles on both sides of the line. He is a wide body and should help open running lanes so Ryan Matthews can fumble after a few more yards are gained.

I talked to his mom when they came back from the spring game. They both LOVED it and said Al Golden is the man!!!
Posted by: WWIN | April 26, 2013 at 01:25 AM
^^^^^^^^
Also said they want him on kick return, punt return, rb, slot, and db. So he's wanted for everything! Lol
Posted by: WWIN | April 26, 2013 at 01:27 AM
Yes sir Sarasota.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | April 26, 2013 at 01:33 AM
I'm realer than a $2 bill sarasota. Butch is UNEMPLOYED and still producing 1 st rounders... Just saying
Posted by: 4-Real | April 26, 2013 at 03:06 AM
All things considered... Butch is the best college football coach in America. His talent evaluation and production is second to none. Wasn't his name cleared? I wonder why an SEC team hasn't offered him. Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Auburn. He would win there. I would like him to be our DC, and assistant HC in waiting. So win Golden wins the BCS playoffs, Butch could roll it on.
This is obviously a dream situation. I took some ambien about 15 minutes ago. Don't care about the legistics of it all. I like Golden. I think DNO is going to lose games for us. I would like to see Butch be back in Coral Gables to help Golden move this thing. Maybe Burtch could mentor DNO? Okay they sleepy timmes are here. The Dude will abide.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | April 26, 2013 at 05:53 AM
Its interesting that Golden and the coaches feel that Stephen Morris is even better than he was at the end of last season.
So, if you have an improved Morris, one of the best RBs in college (Duke) and one of the best OLs, it can only mean the Canes will have an explosive offense this season and should score a ton of points.

IDK nothing about Ismael, but I do knot Dixon was at the spring game and I believe the family/team Barbeque. He does attend a Gator feeder school though lol

Butch hates UM 4-Real. And I never forgave him for stabbing the program at Sean T's funeral.

Follow them more like the directions to your daughters barbie doll house - glance at them, but don't follow it step-by-step.

50% UM, 50% UGA.

Prediction
By tonight, Sony Michel and Dalvin Cook will be committed to SEC schools.
One of them will wind up at Miami.

I'm 50/50..but Im predicting Sony commits to UGA and it sticks. But unlike what I said it the past, I do think this might help with Cook. With all the RB's being newly offered this week I have to think Sony informed the coaches and last night was just one last attempt by the staff.

So we can make that 3 2-stars drafted in the first round.
Can't find anything on Ezekiel Ansah

me neither...I even went back and looked at BYU classes going back to 2008 and nothing lol
Posted by: UMike | April 26, 2013 at 10:26 AM
Even if Sony does go to UGA, I still believe we end up with a top 10 class. We still should get Lane and Clark along with Lammons and maybe Valentine.
Posted by: UMike | April 26, 2013 at 10:27 AM
I think Ansah might've walked on from either the basketball, or the soccer team.
Posted by: CaneRock | April 26, 2013 at 10:42 AM
If Sony goes to Georgia Cook WILL be a cane. Vault it!
Posted by: 4-Real | April 26, 2013 at 10:45 AM
Good call, CR.
"Ansah applied to and was accepted at BYU and awarded an academic scholarship in 2008. Ansah tried out for the basketball team twice, but was cut from both the 2008 and 2009 teams. Finally, Ansah was persuaded to try out for the football team, and he began playing football for the Cougars in 2010.
After facing rejection in basketball, Ansah did successfully walk on to the BYU track team, where he ran a 10.91 in the 100 meter in addition to clocking a time of 21.89 seconds in the 200 meter.
So, would he have been a 2* since he never played the sport before? LOL
