CoCane

BEERicane,

You're joking right?

The Dolphins drafts are pretty good. Jordan is a freak athlete & he'll have 1 of the best DE's in the league schooling him. Taylor at CB fills a need & he's talented. The 3rd pick for the O-Line fills a need. He's athletic & versatile. The trade for LT Albert is still possible. If we pull that off, plus the free agent aquisitions & draft picks... This will be the most successful Dolphins personel upgrade IN DECADES.

As for canes draft prospects. You'll see a big difference in next years draft. So far, I see these players getting drafted in 2014:

QB Stephen Morris 1-2 round
RT Seantrel Henderson 1-2 round
G Brandon Linder 3-5 round
DT Curtis Porter 5-7 round
WR Allen Hurns 5-7 round

If the offense performs the way we expect it to this year. Morris & Henderson will go 1st round picks & end the drout...

BEERicane

Co,

How do you justify giving away your best receiver for zip in back-to-back years? Horrible!

BEERicane

Morris stands a decent shot at being one of the top QBs taken. Huge arm, mobile, plenty of upside. Has the look and feel of an NFL QB

CoCane

They got a pick for Bess & he was the second best. He hasn't had a 1,000 yard season. Hartline did it last year. They also signed Keller at TE, Gibson & WALLACE at WR. I'll take Gibson, Wallace & Hartline over Bess. Also, Bess is more of a Dolfan favorite than a hot commodity to other teams. They were never going to get big value for him.

CaneRock

Besides getting open and catching the ball, another thing I look for in WRs, is YAC/RAC ability. Bess was alright at the former, but left much to be desired with the latter.

And BTW Coke, Miami drafted Dion Sims and Jelani Jenkins today. I like the Sims pick, a big TE to go along with Keller. I'd like to see them get a KR though, I wouldn't mind them takin' a chance on Greg Reid as an UDFA.

Players drafted so far today -

Rutgers UConn Syracuse (combined) 10

Ohio State Michigan Nebraska Penn St 4

BEERicane

I don't know which is a bigger slap in the face for Miami

FIU getting picked before canes or not 1 but 2! Ivy kids getting picked up.

This should be a wakeup call for OGV and time for him tomrecognize Golden's coaching ability despite having the worst D-coordinator in the land and managing to win the division. Don't underestimate Golden, OGV. clearly there was no talent nor leadership for him to work with. In Golden we trust!

BEERicane

86, you can add Miami to that bottom group and keep the sum at 4

TriangleCane

Gentlemen. Mike James and McGee will make and contribute to nfl rosters regardless where they are picked. They both held tight and were coachable
thru some tuff times. They are men, and the nfl is a mans league.
Go Canes!!!

O and the 49ers are making some good selections! We are on the way to our 6th Superbowl win!!!

Whatever makes you sleep better at night BEER, other than an extra six pack before bed. 13-11 for 54.1% winning percentage means he's an average coach at best but keep reading, "What dad did at Temple," while UVA kicks his @$$ every year and you wave a three way tie for the top half of the division pennant to celebrate that incredible 7-5 'breakthrough' year. Sounds like a real Special K definition of an accomplished coach to me, as long as you don't pay attention to what other 2nd year head coaches at their respective schools have done over the last decade by comparison, of course. How about another weight lifting video, or at the very least, another presser, to help kill the time until end of August?

UMike

A few weeks ago when I said Sony to UGA I got called negative, said I had an agenda etc etc..well...your welcome haters!! hahaha

orange 'n green in the vein

UMike, your agenda was to guess accurately what he was going to announce, since that isn't a pro-UM agenda by the very definition of the word accurately, some posters who have nothing but a pro-UM agenda and wish to enforce that onto every blog they can find dealing with discussing final scores in college sports will be sure to let you know they take offense to your posts on the basis of them not singularly sharing their own blobbing agenda.

However, with that being said, UGA is the payroll, I mean program, to beat at this point and Mike Rumph said it best when he wished Sony would just wait because the announcement isn't going to stop the recruiting insanity in the slightest for the guy, so you might not end up being right 10 months from now.

BEERicane

OGV give me an example of your definition of a successful 2nd yr HC who also hasn't had a single selection in the NFL draft. Come up with one and I will hear your argument against golden. He had the least to work with out of pretty much anyone in major college football and even some not so major CFB.

Sarasota 'cane

Can't handle the truth OGV?

Sarasota 'cane

I can't wait to watch you slither out of here next season!

UMike

OGV....I actually hope I was wrong 10 months from now lol

BEERicane

Congrats B McGee!

BEERicane

Too bad B McGee has to go to the city which is Detroit's incestuous offspring. Ball out, boi!!

orange 'n green in the vein

Somebody missed their testosterone pill today to make up for what their body doesn't make anymore.

Sure BEER, the standard for your second year coaches is set by the bars (not where you order a drink bars) that Stoops at OU, Tressel at OSU, Meyer at just about everywhere he's been as a head coach, Chizik at AU, heck I'm going to say it, Coker at UM, set for programs over the last 10 seasons. From there you've got a bunch of 2nd tier bars (still not the kind you order a drink from) set by guys like Petersen at BSU, Saban at Alabama, and some others I can name by name if you want more examples of, that got to 10 wins. By comparison, three way tie for the worst division in the sport and a game over .500 for the year isn't any great shakes.

8 NFL players on the roster the last two years so far and counting, what's that about no talent again?

orange 'n green in the vein

Me too UMike, but I've lost my note telling me if I'm hoping O_C is right or wrong on this recruiting prediction 10 months from now, so maybe he'll claim he got it right as long as Sony doesn't end up at somewhere others than the school he loved growing up and the school his parents love a payoff from?

Sarasota 'cane

You're comparing what Shula left Saban at Alabama to what Shannon and the NCAA gave to Golden at UM?

Classic!

CoCane

I'll say this. There is great optimism about this years team taking that next step to ACC title contender. But as far as results, 13-11. You are what your record says you are. Hopefully after this season Golden's record will say he's gotten much better. I believe it will...

BEERicane

OGV, those coaches ha NFL talent. Golden hasn't had that luxury! So you still didn't come up with coaches that lacked NFL talent and were successful.

BEERicane

OGV is delusional. It took Kirk Ferentz until his 4th season to get to the BCS. He had no talent. Had to replace the old trash and bring in his horses to make it a successful program. If Golden turns out to be as bad of a coach as Fetentz (4-19 first 2 seasons by your measuring stick) I'd take it!

BEERicane

And Chizik?! Wow your brain must have had a large infarct when you typed that. Is is still coaching Auburn, right? Oh and his coaching record is 38-38.

orange 'n green in the vein

BEER, there's been 8 draft picks in the upperclassmen so far, that's NFL talent, it might not have been utilized to the fullest extent but it was there to work with, instead it left early, wasn't buying in, whatever you want to say that in an apologist mind makes it 'understandable' why he's got the record he does, it doesn't mean he did this great job with the roster he was given, it means he did the job he did and got the results he has, which aren't that impressive to me.

At least you can admit how bad the DC is, I hoping non-facetiously, though sometimes you can never tell on the internet, but why is he still employed if the UM coach is so good and GT fired their idol mid-season and improved defensively running a simplified scheme with an empty seat in the film room instead of a DC who had coached in the NFL for a lot of his adult life? Here's another fun puzzler, if Temple worships D'No as the second holy football savior after Golden and as Mark always tells you, they won games with defense during their turnaround, why did Temple hire the old OL coach when it came time to replace the guy who replaced Golden? What happened to winning with defense, D'No being just as revered as Al, in the city of brotherly love, it was all just lip service then?

Sarasota 'cane

Delusional is the word Beer. It's almost "Rain Man" like. So set to prove a point that is being eroded on a daily basis that to continue to try and drive home the point becomes bizarre and comical to read!

We all read just about every written word about the team and can usually tell where the team is lacking (defense still needs one or two recruiting cycles is one example.). But to take all the info that's been written about the team, process it, and then conclude that Golden is the problem is delusional. There's no other explanation.

Now how good is Golden? Is he Beamer good (never won a title)? Is he Zook good? Is he Butch Davis good (great recruiter, sometimes rattled on game day)? We do not have enough data to make a reasonable decision about where he fits yet.

The only way to hammer Golden the way he gets here is to completely factor out the state of the program that was left to him, and also factor out the impact that the NCAA investigation. But you cannot remove those two factors and come to a reasonable conclusion free of delusion.

orange 'n green in the vein

I'd take Chizik, fired with his one ring in over 50 years of the AU program, over Ferentz any day BEER.

I think Kirk is the most overrated coach in that league, not that he's bad IMO, he's better than average but not great by any means in any way IMO. Can you even make a compelling case for his tenure matching up to his contract/media hype?

Not being snarky or anything, it's a serious question, since you brought his turnaround from the one and two win seasons he started with up, but he's been there for approaching two decades and he's just as likely to lose six games or more as he is to win 10 any given season or go to a BCS game once every 7 years or so.

I've just never gotten the appeal of the guy or why Iowa keeps cutting the big checks for those results, though he can develop OL's thanks to his time in the NFL doing the same before he got the job, admittedly.

CoCane

Congradulations to Brandon McGee. His family is from my neighborhood in Westwood Park in Lauderdale. I grew up with his older cousins. I know his mom would be so proud. God bless them. He & his family really deserves this. LAUDERDALE!!!

Congrats to McGee!

Oregon, two year investigation by the NCAA into paying cash for steering recruits to them, finally went to the COI this spring.

24-3 over the last two years. Coach was rumored to go to the NFL (not a basketball school, the NFL) it seemed like every week over that span also BTW.

Continue with the persecution complex to justify a 13-11 record over the last two years now . . .

(I think the LB drafted #3 is going to be a bust because you should never draft defensive players from a league that can't stop anybody good.)

Sarasota 'cane

Damn the Dolphins added two crocs! I say with free agency and the draft the Dolphins look improved! Tom Brady will know who the Miami Dolphins are next year!

Go Dolphins!

BEERicane

Ferentz derserves his accolades because he has a tremendous recruiting disadvantage because of location and lack of anything resembling a metropolitan area from which to recruit. He does way more with less talent than anyone in the country. Put him down here in Miami and give him access to these Florida athletes, he would have dominant teams year-in and year-out. He can develop players.

Sarasota 'cane

Oregon example is a fail as well. They didn't have the empty cupboard (Shannon) to start with for one, and two the coach they just hired is the one that will have to deal with the repercussions, not Kelly! And three (since I'm feeling generous) their NCAA transgressions don't even compare to what Golden has been dealing with. Nice try though!

Square peg, I'd like you to meet round hole!

Go 'canes!

4real the wheels had completely fallen off this team when Randy was fired. He had lost the locker room, the assistants, and the support of the admin and community.

Butch had it better than Golden and his teams digressed early in his regime. If we had social media in 96-98 then Butch Davis would not have been our coach nor would he have turned around the team in 99. That's a fact.

Now I'm off! Maybe...

UMike

Mike dont be an insufferable little liar

You weren't accused of having an agenda because you said Sony was going to GA. It was because you were moaning and whining like a little girl about how Golden keeps losing S Fla prospects. Look it up.

I, for one, was saying if we lost him it wouldn't be the end of the world like you'd like it to be. If you review your posts on this blog and at the Herald (as someone else posted) its clear you have an anti-Golden and antiCane agenda, in my opinion

Posted by: Canesfan_1 | April 27, 2013 at 03:40 PM

Lets get this clear...your a pussy! Talk all this stuff on a blog like your some tough guy..I HOPE you would say it to my face one day. I NEVER post at the Herald and I seriously have no clue why someone would use that name, but it sure isnt me. Also, I NEVER said it would be the end of the world, I said it would "hurt" and it appears there is a trend of top local talent getting away, and I never said it was Golden. I have praised Golden countless times but I bet you looked that right over. Its is pretty sad you spend your time reading and researching my posts, maybe you need a gf or a pet or something to occupy your time.

orange 'n green in the vein

BEER, by that reasoning, Golden's miracle at Temple needs to be discounted out of hand because he had those advantages that MAC opponents didn't have at his last stop.

Ferentz can develop OL's, on that we agree. Other than that I don't get the hype of him being one of the best in the profession, but of course I'm not the type of person impressed by a game or half a game over .500 seasons, which he turns out on the regular, so that figures.

8 NFL caliber players on the top half of the roster to start with, Mike James going to make it 9? Not so empty since you're approaching a whole starting half a team that was deemed worthy of a pick in the draft or a contract to win a job in camp. How many guys with ugly college uniforms are on NFL rosters over the same stretch, more, less, the same? The investigations occurred over almost the exact same time frame, so Kelly was on campus dealing with the fallout of his own actions while he lost only 3 games in two years instead of 11. A coach paying a handler to steer players to him is a little more serious than a broke liar with a desire to sniff jocks wailing from his jail cell about all the times he got a whiff and then didn't get so much as a callback when it all came crashing down. They're repeat violators also by the way, last time I checked.

Terrance Sullivan

Congrats Brandon McGEE.

BEERicane

The lack of any metro area and being able to play winning football is much more telling than the presence of one. Which is why you don't see a ton of Hawkeyes putting people to the NFL in skill positions- yet they still win more often than not in a really tough football conference. The lack of big time stars walking in at Iowa City only adds to the argument for him being a tremendous coach not detracts from it. He is one of the only guys that can win and get to BCS bowls without such talent which implies his coaching is way up there. He wins with less -- much less.

86Cane

UMike...don't sweat the small stuff. What I think about U and your perceived agenda means very little in the bigger scheme of things. I cannot prove your agencda in a court of law but what I do know is this:

1. You view the world from a glass half empty perspective. Instead of being thankful for what U have you are always worrying about things you don't have and which you and others have no control over.

2. The majority of your comments are really complaints about something and most of them focus on the negative which makes you appear to be a negative person.

Buy like I said, don't mind me, it's just one person's opinion based on your blog behavior. U know yourself better than I do so just trust yourself. My advice to U is:

"Don't worry, be happy."

"Be Calm and Carry On".

UMike

86..your killing me lol...I do not see the world from a glass half empty view lol...all I am doing is either passing on information or giving an opinion. Some times that info is good, sometimes it is bad. Some times my opinion is negative, some times it is positive...just like every one else. I said I think Sony is going to UGA, that is not negative at all, just my opinion for doing my homework. I said I think there is a trend of top local players leaving, again just an opinion and once that is backed up with facts. Even that opinion wasnt negative, just something I though was happening. I never said Golden or Miami was doing anything wrong, I just said we are missing out on a lot of top local guys lately. The only thing I have criticized Golden about is keeping D'No and the Kirkland situation, other than that I have done nothing but praise him.

I just want it to be clear to you and everyone, I am NOT a negative person, I do NOT have an agenda...it just appears some people only want to response to a negative comment while forgetting all the positive ones. I have no idea how anyone could say I have an "anit-cane" or "anti-Golden" agenda and if so they obviously dont read ALL my posts. I have been blogging on the space since its second season and no one as ever accused me of being negative lol

BEERicane

I just want it to be clear to you and everyone, I am NOT a negative person

This is something a negative person would say. LOL!

orange 'n green in the vein

BEER, I don't disagree with that argument really, and like I said, he's a good coach, I just don't understand how he gets boosted into the great coaches club like his salary is elevated to.

I will say this about Ferentz, first, he's a good father from what I've read of him, second, if UM had opened the wallet and shelled out Schiano offer money (and let's face it, UM wasn't opening the wallet with Holcut out there stammering on and on about how money wasn't going to be a detractor in the search) to get him to replace Shannon, I would have had reservations about him along the lines I've expressed today still but would have felt a lot better about having someone on the sidelines with the ability to start winning big like the team was set up to do in '11 and '12 than they ended up being those two seasons.

Two split titles 10 years or so ago, hasn't had a good season in four years going into this one, huge contract (probably paid right from a chunk of the network money from the conference but still), I get the feeling we have widely varying opinions on the quality of the league over his tenure too. When you throw out those first two years though he had a pretty impressive run going up until last year, so like I said, good coach, can't put him in the top echelon personally though and I can see why you're inclined to give him a bit of weighted scale of evaluation due to the program idiosyncrasies compared to the competition. Do you think Bill Snyder is a better coach than Ferentz, personally?

BEERicane

I'd place Snyder a small notch below Ferentz simply based on NFL production over similar time spans. They are similar coaches in ability --though Manhattan KS is pretty close to KC. Ferentz is paid because he turned around a dead and hopeless program and gave the people of Iowa a renewed sense of pride in something relevant to the rest of the nation. Got the school back on national TV, boosted Alumni donations and the endowment at the school. He is paid to keep him around to keep the interest in the university high. He has that all important tool in business known as leverege and is paid because of it and fear of becoming irrelevant again and quickly.
