In a back-and-forth affair at Alex Rodriguez Park, the Miami Hurricanes completed a weekend sweep of visiting St. John's with a 6-4 win in Sunday's series finale.
Sophomore lefthander Andrew Suarez provided another strong performance from the mound, going 6.2 innings and allowing just one earned run. The Miami, Fla., native, who struck out three Red Storm batters on the afternoon and walked none, scattered six hits in his third straight quality start.
In a game that saw three lead changes over the middle frames, a three-run, two-out rally in the seventh inning would prove the difference. With the victory, the Hurricanes (32-18) extended their home winning streak to six consecutive games.
Suarez was boosted by a diving grab from senior Chantz Mack in the second that helped prevent an early run. With two runners on base, Mack lunged forward and caught a sinking flyball in his outstretched glove to end the inning. The lefthander would retire six in a row after the catch, doing his part to keep the Red Storm (20-30) off the board.
Despite drawing five walks against St. John's starter Ryan Horstman, the Hurricanes were unable to generate any run support for Suarez in the early going. But, having chased Horstman out of the game after just four innings, the hosts tagged Ryan McCormick in his first inning of relief.
Freshman outfielder Ricky Eusebio led off the inning with a single, while Palmer reached via bunt single to give the Hurricanes two runners on base. After Hernandez advanced both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, McCormick intentionally walked Mack to force an out at any base.
Junior Brad Fieger would convert the opportunity, connecting on a flyball to deep center to plate Eusebio and break the deadlock for a 1-0 advantage. McCormick limited the damage, however, as freshman David Thompson's 12-pitch at bat ended in an inning-ending strikeout.
The Red Storm responded with two runs in the top of the sixth, taking their first lead of the game on an RBI single from Frank Schwindel.
The lead would be short-lived, however, as the Hurricanes managed to plate two runs in the bottom of the inning to regain a 3-2 advantage. After allowing back-to-back singles to senior Alex San Juan and sophomore Garrett Kennedy, McCormick balked to advance both runners into scoring position. Infield RBI singles from Eusebio and Hernandez helped Miami regain a one-run lead.
Though St. John's would knot the game at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly from Dan Roland, the Hurricanes connected for three runs off reliever Thomas Hackimer (0-2) in the decisive seventh inning. With two runners on base and two outs, pinch hitter Roger Gonzalez connected on an infield hit to load the bases. Palmer went opposite field for a single to put Miami back on top at 4-3, while a rip up the middle from Hernandez off Hackimer plated two more to extend the lead to three. With the hit, Hernandez set a new career high with three RBI's in the game.
Senior Eric Whaley pitched well in relief of Suarez, allowing a lone unearned run. The righthander jumpstarted an inning-ending double play in the eighth by fielding a sharp grounder and throwing to a covering Brandon Lopez, who fired to first baseman Brad Fieger to end the inning.
Closer Eric Nedeljkovic recorded his second save of the series and conference-leading 12th save of the season with a perfect ninth, as Miami cruised to its first weekend sweep since February.
The Hurricanes next travel to Winston Salem, N.C. for a weekend series with Wake Forest. First pitch for Friday's series opener is set for 6 p.m.
Is there any team outside the sec doing well signing DTs?
Posted by: My Balls are Sweaty | May 06, 2013 at 06:36 AM
In the class of 2013 recruiting cycle outside of the SEC schools ND, USC, FSU, UNC, Michigan, Ohio State, Washington and Baylor signed a top 25 DT.
In the State of FL there were 4 DTs rated in the top 30 by Scout. FSU signed 2 of them the #7 and #18 ranked DTs and UF signed 2 also the #17 and #19 ranked DTs from 2013. Which means UM signed 0.
According to sources there are allegations are that at least one of the UF recruits had the kitchen sink of recruiting enticements thrown at him which according to "rumors" is why the UF DT coached recently "resigned" to "spend more time with his "family".
In 2012 according to Scout there was only ONE DT from FL ranked in the top 30: Omari Phiilps from Venice, FL. He was ranked #19 and went to Tennessee.
In 2012 UF signed a JC transfer who was ranked #20 and that's all.
In 2012 FSU sigend 2 DT's ranked in the top 25 on Scout. FSU signed the #4 and #10 ranked DTs that year but neither was from FL, one was from Wash D.C. and the other from Alabama.
In 2011 there were only 2 DTs from FL ranked in the top 25 by Scout. FSU signed the #4 ranked propect and UF signed NONE. The other recruit from FL was ranked #23 and went to Bama.
In 2011 Miami signed Jalen Grimble from Las Vegas, NV the #7 ranked DT nationally by Scout.
So in the last two years FSU has signed the #4, #4, #7, #10 and #18 ranked DTs to Miami's ONE (#7 Grimble). UF has signed the #17, #19 and #20 for three total over the last three years (one a JC transfer).
My intial analysis of these facts is consistent with Canespace recruiting expert UMike and is as follows: "NOT GOOD".

First, right off the bat, I'm no Onofrio or Jethro fan. I hate onofrio's passive, ten yards off the ball scheme. My problem with Jethro is he hasn't produced bottom line. Whether I aching or recruiting, based on MEASUABLE results.
But this "I have read/heard from multiple places that Franklin is an azz clown on the recruiting trail and many families just dont like him" is just gossip rag nonsense. How about some specifics, and sources, otherwise it's meaningless mouth diahhrhea. We have enough problems recruiting defensive players without this unsourced silly gossip being put out there TO HURT US.
Just my 2 cents

I think as long as we win some games this year (8 to 10), and our D shows any improvement, we should pick up Clark & Valentine and perhaps a JUCO DT or two. We are also in the thick of it for Lamont Gaillard and Thomas Holley.

Miami coaches also recently visited Lorenzo Carter the #1 rated DE and #9 overall. I don't think he is realistic, but at least the staff is putting in the work.

Not U personally UMike, but believe me when I tell U that OTHERS are intentionally trying to hurt UM and spreading untrue rumors is the oldest trick in the book to get that done. They almost always get repeated as was the case here.

FROM HEATHER AT THE ESPN ACC BLOG
Miami officials aren't the only ones still waiting for closure from the NCAA on its investigation into the program.
ACC commissioner John Swofford told ESPN.com on Thursday that the mere length of this case is "a sanction in itself." A hearing is scheduled to begin in June, but Miami officials filed a motion about a month ago to dismiss the case before it even gets that far. Miami is not commenting publicly on whether or not the NCAA has granted or denied its motion, but a school representative said the university has heard from the Committee on Infractions and that, "as of now, we are progressing towards the hearing."
The NCAA did not immediately return a phone call and email seeking comment on Friday afternoon.
“I think Miami has handled its part of this in a quality way and a very appropriate way and has addressed it head-up with self-imposed sanctions," Swofford said. "Hopefully this will be coming to an end in the next few months because it’s dragged on long enough. That’s a sanction in itself, when something of this nature drags on literally for years without being brought to a conclusion. So hopefully we’re near the end of it.”

It definitely isn't a rumor that his D-Line has consistently under performed lol
Posted by: UMike | May 06, 2013 at 10:41 AM
I don't know that I can say they've underperformed. Crap in, Crap out, right?
Posted by: BEERicane | May 06, 2013 at 10:43 AM
Something is definitely scaring these DT recruits away. We have managed to get highly rated QB's, DB's, WR's, TE's, LB's (not many), and DE's..but no DT's. The last highly rated DT we had that committed AND signed was Luther Robinson who was a 4-Star in the 2009 class.
Posted by: UMike | May 06, 2013 at 10:46 AM
BEER..you could definitely be right, but Chick didn't seem to improve and he was our best, or among our best, DL. I think we had enough talent to be better than we were. I know he isn't dealing with the deepest pool of talent, but geez lol
Posted by: UMike | May 06, 2013 at 10:48 AM
The stats don't lie. The D-line has not produced, BUT you can see improvements (O. Pierre, Robinson and Porter). I really think the early depature from 2 years ago hurt and AG and staff had to bring in bodies for the D-Line (King, Plug, etc.) Now we just have to continue teaching and making the most of the D-line on campus and recruiting others. It is time for Grimble to produce. IF he can bring his game up to O.P., L. Robinson, and C. Porter that will go a long ways allow us to rotate 4 quality guys in. We can then rotate them out on 3rd and long (when's the last time we had one of those) and bring in a Chick to get more speed in the interior.
Posted by: Houston | May 06, 2013 at 10:57 AM
Here is the "talent" Miami has brought in since the 2010 class. Not all players made the field and some didn't quality etc..but here are the D-Line commits according to Rivals starting with the 2010 class.
2010
Jeffery Brown DT 2-Star
Tavadis Glenn DT 4-Star
David Perry DE 3-Star
Andrew Tallman DE 3-Star
Delmar Taylor DT 3-Star
2011
Anthony Chickillo DE 4-Star
Jalen Grimble DE 4-Star
Olsen Pierre DE 3-Star
Corey King DT 2-Star
Darius Smith DT Unrated
2012
Jacoby Briscoe DT 3-Star
Jelani Hamilton DE 4-Star
Dwayne Hoilett DE 3-Star
Dequan Ivery DT 3-Star
Tyriq McCord DE 4-Star
Earl Moore DT 3-Star
Jake O'Donnell DE 3-Star
2013
Ufomba Kamalu DE 2-Star
Al-Quadin Muhammad DE 4-Star
Posted by: UMike | May 06, 2013 at 10:57 AM
Houston...I didn't take into account the early departures, good point. I don't think Porter improved as much as e just got healthy. But Pierre has improved, i agree.
Posted by: UMike | May 06, 2013 at 10:59 AM
And that's sad, that Lutha was even a 4 star. He's played like a no-star.Let's put blame where blame is deserved, first our present DT's scare no-one! Now we can blame the coaches, it's true, are DEE-line coach (Jethro) hasn't motivated anybody, except to get out of the way of the ball carrier and don't touch the QB until, he's drank his coffee. In their defense, the talent level is not very good, I hate to say it, but it's true. What did we do to remedy the problem, nothing, we couldn't land one DT but of course we only went after about 4 guys initially and only after we didn't get those guys did we go after about 4 more and that went South too! We did get some raw bone, that played DE and he will move to tackle, so I guess we did get one. Our LB position is a little brighter but it seems we are in the business now of getting them ready for the JR. Colleges. The Herb sees the Defensive front playing better than they did last year, they can't be much worse, so that has to be a plus. We'll dip inside of the 90's at best. I hate it for our guys in the secondary because we actually have some talent back their.

This Haith thing is interesting because I've talked to tellers at the evil corporation who have stated if you look into certain accounts (think trash 'reality' TV 'stars' who are on the cover of the local supermarket rag with their ugly sisters and a baby bump with no wedding ring) without authorization an investigation is immediately launched into the employee's actions and you're basically fired unless they or their representatives are standing there telling you to bring up the account.
Now, obviously, Frank Haith isn't pregnant by a rapper, so he doesn't have that kind of protection, but still, he deserves privacy of his records despite the lawyer scum who think otherwise on the payroll of the NCAA being whipped up into a frenzy by Kyle Wrong's #1 fan who wants to elope to a state that will recognize his marriage to the bust.
Got ethics? UM could also use an AD that's Got Intelligence, Eichorst apparently did as far as I can tell, James, jury's still out, Special K, BWAHAHAHA! Yeah right!
