We thought that it should not go unmentioned that seven Miami Hurricanes were inducted into the UM Sports Hall of Fame during its 45th annual induction banquet earlier this year.
Prior to the UMSHOF inductions two additional awards were handed out:
- Junior
football player Shane McDermott was presented with the Walter Kichefski Endowed
Football Scholarship by Don Mariutto Jr.
- The UMSHOF Distinguished Service
Award was presented to Dr. Clyde B. McCoy.
The Class of 2013 included Ed
Contreras (baseball, 1957-59), Ken Dorsey (football, 1999-2002), Bryan Gillooly
(diving, 1994-98), Norm Parsons (administration / coaching, 1972-2012), Brett
Romberg (football, 1999-2002), Don Soldinger (coach, 1984-88 and 1995-2006) and
Jay Tessmer (baseball, 1994-95).
Ed Contreras, Baseball:
One of Miami's first true power hitters, Contreras led the Canes in home runs and RBI in each of his three seasons (19 HR, 67 RBI in 77 games) and also led the team in batting in 1958 (.316) and 1959 (.310). He left Miami as the school's single-season and career home runs leader and he still holds the UM career slugging percentage record (.615) for under 300 at bats. He played for legendary major leaguer and UM coach, Jimmy Foxx, and also played basketball for UM Sports Hall of Famer, Coach Bruce Hall.
Ken Dorsey, Football:
Dorsey quarterbacked the Hurricanes to their fifth national championship in 2001 and was named MVP of the 2002 Rose Bowl. He was a 2002 All-American by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and the Walter Camp Football Foundation. The 2001 and 2002 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, Dorsey set eight UM career records, including total offense, passing yards, passing touchdowns, completions and attempts. He is the winningest quarterback in program history (38-2) and he won the 2001 Maxwell Award as the top player in college football.
Brett Romberg, Football
In 2002 Romberg was
a consensus All-American and Rimington Award winner as the nation's best center.
He was a first-team All-BIG EAST selection in 2001 and 2002, while never
allowing a sack in his time as the Hurricanes center. Miami went 35-2 in his 37
consecutive starts at center, helping lead the Canes to the 2001 national title
and three BIG EAST titles.
Don Soldinger, Coach
Soldinger was the linebackers and tight ends coach for Jimmy Johnson from 1984-88 and was the running backs and special teams coach under coaches Butch Davis and Larry Coker from 1995-2006. He was on the 1987 and 2001 national championship coaching staffs; he also coached six of the seven Miami running backs that rushed for 1,000 yards in a season (Willis McGahee, Edgerrin James - twice, Clinton Portis, Danyell Ferguson, Frank Gore and James Jackson). In his 16 seasons as a Hurricanes assistant coach, Miami won 158 games.
Jay Tessmer, Baseball
Tessmer was a first-team Collegiate Baseball All-American in 1995 after collecting 20 saves - tied for second-most in school history - and posting a 1.31 ERA to lead Jim Morris' squad to the College World Series. He finished second nationally in Division I with a 1.16 ERA in 1994, while his career 1.24 ERA ranks second in school history. He holds the UM record for fewest walks per 9 innings (1.42 average) and has the second-most appearances by a pitcher in a season (45 in 1995). Tessmer finished his career fifth with 23 saves and played professionally for the New York Yankees.

From Tito at CIS..
2015 ATH Jaquan Johnson led his Killian Cougars to one of the greatest seasons and playoff runs in school history. He is hoping to learn from it and and use it as fuel for next season.
“It was a great experience for me, because that was my first time. I was excited to be there and I wanted to win, but it didn’t turn out our way. Now we are just learning from it, we are learning from that experience to get better. The main difference from our team last year and this year is the focus. We are more focused now then we were last year as a whole team.”
Johnson was a leader on and off the field despite only being a sophomore. he believes it is an honor to be considered a leader by many and is looking forward to doing it for more years.
“It just means that all the work I put in before I was in high school really paid off. Everybody looks up to me because I have really put in the effort to be better then my opponent. It’s just a really great experience and I’m happy that I can do it for all four years and not only one.”
Johnson is currently sidelined with a strained back and is not participating in spring with the team. However, he is expected to be back on June 3rd.
Despite his young age, the rising junior is attracting major interest from schools all around the country including Tennessee, Clemson, Florida State, Florida and Miami.
While the Killian product is gaining major interest from dozens of schools he claims that every one is even and has no leader.
“Everybody is about the same, the schools I’ve been talking to Florida State, Florida and Miami. All of them are the same.”
Miami offered Johnson back in February and has stayed in constant contact with the staff since
“ My relationship with Miami is very close, I just like that they are trying to bring back Miami, what we lost. I grew up a Miami fan and we lost the swagger that we had, and the excitement and how we used to play. Thats what they are trying to bring back and that’s what I’m looking forward to if I do commit to Miami.”
Johnson is also highly interested in the cross state rival, Florida, and described what his draw to their program is.
“I like the campus and the facilities, they are big. The weight room looks nice, and the coach who is recruiting me is really cool.”
Johnson has no plans of an early decision but knows what coaches will need to do to land him.
“I just want to gain trust and be able to believe everything they tell me is exactly how it is and from there just be able to go an play ball.”

For the Herb lol..
American Heritage DT Edgar Cerenord (6’2”, 290) has enjoyed a Spring filled with offers from Arkansas, Cincinnati, Wake Forest, East Carolina, Indiana, Rutgers, and UCF amongst others. Although he knows these are steps in the right direction, Cerenord isn’t willing to settle.
“It means a lot, but then again it doesn’t because that stuff can kind of get your mind off of the main goal, which is winning the state championship. I’m just going to keep working hard so that good things happen,” said Cerenord.
American Heritage will have high hopes yet again this season, as they will be playing this season with a new Head Coach, former Miami Hurricane Mike Rumph.
“It’s been different in many different ways. Practice is more physical and high-tempo. You just have to work harder and the coaches are pushing us to the limit.”
Heritage will be boasting one of the top schedules in the entire country next season and Cerenord is looking forward to the challenge.
“We don’t think about it as us having a hard schedule, we think about it as them having a tough game with us on their schedule. We’re trying to work hard and get to the top. Cypress Bay, Central, Columbus, Chaminade are our first four games and I think we might have Delray Heritage in there too.”
What has the agile lineman been working on this offseason?
“I’ve been trying to focus on my pass-rush because my cousin has pointed it out to me that most of my highlights are run-stop plays. Even in practice, I’m focusing on getting after the quarterback. I’m still progressing with it.”
Something that Cerenord prides himself on is his elite conditioning and quickness, which is a rare combination for most at his position.
“It helps a lot because I can do more things than most big guys my size. I train hard with my trainer and it makes everything better because you don’t have to be huffing-and-puffing all the time.”
Cerenord has taken the recruiting process step-by-step and is planning his summer schedule.
“What I’m doing now is going through a process with my family and cousin to make a list of all the schools with interest in me and have offered me and putting down the coaches’ phone numbers and camp dates because I know a lot of these camps are on the same date.”
One school he hopes to hear more from is the University of Florida.
“Florida is stacked at defensive tackle, but growing up I like them a lot and they were big for me, but I’m open to everybody.”
Cerenord has had contact with Miami in the past, most notably with Defensive Coordinator Mark D’Onofrio. He spoke with the ‘Canes about three weeks ago when they were at his school.
“The week before Sony’s decision they were there and told me to go to a camp, but I haven’t had a chance to talk to Coach D’Onofrio lately. I’ll probably call him this week.”

2013 DT Eddie Vanderdoes is in the process of decommitting from ND for various reasons, could UM be a Possibility as a destination. There are rumors that ND won't accept one of classes (which was the samething with AQM) where as I am thinking UM will accept the class.

Another thing about the Wilson "situation", we aren't exactly hurting for DB's..this is one area we really dont have to reach on or take chances. There is a good chance Miami will sign Patten and Lammons in this class, both 4-star CB's rated ahead of Wilson.

I just dont get it Ohio...ALL schools want certain players to change positions..and MANY players that have done so have excelled. I hate that they are trying to paint Miami in a negative light simply because the staff is being honest. We could EASILY say he will play corner to he would sign and then switch him..which is probably what will happen lol..I am sure the staff has evaluated him and know.
There is also a story about Cardinal Gibbons Rb George Simmoms. Someone (maybe a coach, IDK) called Miami about their interest in him...and Miami wanted him to come camp so they could see him. What the hell is wrong with that? They expected an offer from a phone call?? lol It seems SOME of these South Florida kids think their entitled to a Miami offer.
Posted by: UMike | May 22, 2013 at 09:33 AM
I don't think it's just south Florida kids UMike. I believe it is a shift in our culture as a whole. A lot of kids think that hard work ends once you are labeled "good". It's not all the kids fault either. I believe most of the blame rest on hungry adults.

Here's the long and short of it with Quincy. Quincy wants to be a corner. Our staff has evaluated him extensively, and believes he should be a safety due to his hips. His hips are slow. He's a fantastic athlete, but he's no corner at that level.
The staff does NOT think Quincy sucks, they just do NOT believe he'll be a good corner. They'll believe he'll be a GREAT safety.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | May 22, 2013 at 10:10 AM
Ohio...and with all the quality corners available..and the talent we have coming in..no need to reach on a guy. Again..staff gets no love for actually being honest.
Posted by: UMike | May 22, 2013 at 10:16 AM
UMike, there's no need to reach on anyone from here on out with sanctions ending and Golden building the depth he needs.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | May 22, 2013 at 10:55 AM
Ohio..I'm just saying..with our lack of depth and talent at the DT and LB spots, i could understand reaching a little on a player..but not at CB lol

#TownCane
Posted by: LB | May 22, 2013 at 12:58 PM
Kamalu is a Cane. Said he's coming, just not in Summer 1.
Griffin is waiting on NCAA clearinghouse, I believe. He scored high enough on his exit exam.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | May 22, 2013 at 01:26 PM
LB..I personally don have an update on neither..This is thel atest on Griffin as of a week ago...
Via Barry Jackson
### Derrick Griffin, rivals.com’s No. 3 receiver prospect and No. 81 hoops prospect in this class, must still pass a Texas-required “exit test” to be eligible to attend UM and play football and basketball, his Terry (Tx.)-based high school athletic director said, adding resolution is expected within a couple weeks. The athletic director said junior colleges have been in contact with Griffin in case he doesn't qualify. The athletic director, Mike Rice, said he could not speculate on the chances of Griffin passing the test, though everyone is hopeful.
UM's basketball team is really counting on him to contribute significantly this season. Rice said his GPA and ACT score have met requirements.
As for Kamalu..I heard he wasnt coming because of sanctions..then I heard he was. I do not know if he signed or not..it is different for JUCO players, their deadlines are different than HS kids.

Perhaps the youth is weighing college versus going directly into the NFL draft?

Let the Herb speak about some of these young High Schoolers, first this kid Rudolph, Miami offers the kid and he verbals, then he starts getting love from some other big time schools and decides to decom from us, his ego gets big and he starts running dem chops and now he's back tracking. The Herb says we don't need him. These kids that want to dictate, where their going to play, let'm go, the same with Quincy Wilson of course we haven't offered him yet but the dude wants to play corner and that's it. These kids have to learn that we butter the bread not them. We need kids that are willing to do whatever the staff wants, even if that means switching positions to get on the field.
The Herb loves that we offered another DT a ship, that makes about 19 so far, so our chances are going up that we can get at least one! Also good to see Goldie coming to UNC country to try and get some players.
We do have a little depth at CB, as compared to DT & LB but the Herb sees where we could always use another stout CB or 2. The Herb, is not staisfied with the overall depth of talent on the defensive side of the ball, as it is anyway, at any position.
