The formula is simple and undeniable: The U + The NFL = The NFLU.
Any sports fan that follows college and professional football knows that the NFL would just not be the same or as complete if not for a small, private school in South Florida that completely stood college football on it's proverbial head exactly 30 years ago.
When the Miami Hurricanes won their first National Championship in 1983 under head coach Howard Schnellenberger, the former NFL offensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins, and behind a quarterback named Bernie Kosar that would go on to play for the Cleveland Browns and later those same Dolphins, the National Football League began to take notice of the talent being produced at The U.
And since that time they have never looked back. In fact, so many great University of Miami football players have been drafted and gone on to achieve stardom in the NFL that Hurricane fans, and even some of those who are not, often refer to the League as the NFLU.
Even this past season two of the highest profile professional Hurricanes and soon to be NFL Hall of Famers, LB Ray Lewis and S Ed Reed, along with OL Bryant McKinnie, RB Damien Berry and WR Tommy Streeter, helped the Baltimore Ravens win the NFL's ultimate prize, the Super Bowl.
The U.
The NFL.
The NFLU.
And to football fans everywhere: U are very, very welcome.
First?

SOUP, this article got me thinking about an arguement I've been having at work for the last couple years. It goes like this...
Anyone here think Edge gets in the Hall? He has more career rushing yards than Marcus Allen, Thurman Thomas and Franco Harris. More TDs than Tony Dorsett and Earl Campbell. His 91 career TDs ranks him 26th in NFL history. He was the 1999 NFL Rookie of the Year, was selected for the Pro Bowl 4 times, All Pro 4 times and won the NFL Rushing Title twice. He rushed for over 1,500 yards 4 times. Oh yeah, he did most of this for teams chucking the ball all over the field and was a fantastic ambassador to the game and otherwise wonderful human being.
Edge better make the Hall.
He's 11th all time in rushing yards and 22nd all time in total yards.

I say YES to Edge in the NFLU HOF just based on the stats U provided. Good research there.

Another future Hall of Fame candidate? Reggie Wayne. Only 32 receptions short of 1,000. Already 10th all time in receptions. He's a 6 time Pro-Bowler and a Super Bowl Champion. In 2007 he finished as the NFL's leader in receiving yards with 1,510, which was better than Randy Moss's historic 1,493 effort with the New England Patriots. He currently ranks 24th in career receiving touchdowns but will likely be in the teens before next season is over. I believe he also owns an NFL record for most consecutive games with 3 catches.

Behind a well-balanced barrage from their offense and another strong start from Chris Diaz, the Miami Hurricanes captured their series opener over visiting St. John's by a final score of 12-3.
The Hurricanes (30-18) scored five of their first seven runs with two outs, registering a season-high 12 in the contest. Not to be outdone, Diaz continued a dominant personal stretch on the mound to help his team get back on the winning track in its final non-conference series.
The southpaw, who tossed six shutout innings against the Red Storm (20-28), allowed just one hit in another impressive stint. Dating back to his April 5 start against Florida State, Diaz has allowed just one earned run over his last 37.1 innings, good for a miniscule ERA of 0.24 across those five starts.

I think the Canes that end up making the HOF are: Reggie Wayne, Andre Johnson, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Vince Wilfork and Frank Gore. Clinton Portis may make it if voters remember him well. Santana Moss still has an opportunity, but needs to make it to a few probowls. Same could be said of Bryant McKinnie and Chris Myers.
There are currently 6 Hurricanes in the NFL HOF. The leader is 11 by USC. If the six I listed as likely candidates make it, that would give the Hurricanes 12. Junior Seau is a gauranteed 1st ballot HOF for USC in 2015. So we could be tied for 1st.
Posted by: The Dude | May 04, 2013 at 11:10 AM
Florida State will get Derrick Brooks in next year and MAYBE Walter Jones. Its a pretty good 2014 class. I'd have to think that Jones gets in eventually. That would bring FSU up to 4 HOFers.

TJL, there probably will be more Gators fans. Until we start embarassing them again, it will be that way. We need to put the shame back in 'em. Its the same way with FSU. We gotta get good again. Where the other fans don't want to come to our house, because they don't want to face that walk of shame to the car at the end of the game.

Faulk is still a little bitter Gino has 'his' Heisman I'm betting.
The Dude, the capacity is just under 4100 and it was pretty much 2/3rds full with the uncovered seats almost completely empty thanks to the rain probably so I'd guess 2100 or so?
As for the future HOF'ers from UM, Edge will get in, it might take a while though, I think Wayne, Lewis and Reed will get in quickly, with a possible first ballot induction for both Reggie and Ed to go along with Ray's definite first ballot selection, Johnson and Gore won't have to wait long although Frank is going to have a tougher time than Andre keeping his production up long enough to lock his spot in at Canton, McKinney would be nearing a lock but for the words 'boat party' entering sports lexicon thanks in part to him (he will probably eventually get there in due time), Meyers is UM's OL version of Ray Lewis, a very good college player who is quickly putting together a HOF NFL career although it's usually toughest for guards and centers to garner enough support for induction. Vince will get in, it will take a few ballots though.
Portis and Moss, two of my favorites from the team from when I was in college, are locks for the 'Hall of Very Good,' but for the HOF, will have to wait a long time I'm guessing if they make it at all, obviously Santana still has a chance to add to his career totals and change that. Clinton may have excelled under Shanahan, but was run into the ground with the workload doing so, the press conference antics won't play well with a percentage of the voting base either, another hurdle for induction his career will have to overcome by either having that voting bloc die off or get over it in time.

Dude, you are usually spot on.
But I totally disagree with your last statement. Have you ever been to a game, especially FSU at home or the last time we played the gators?
There will be a lot of gayturs in the stands, no doubt, but MORE than Canes. No way. That's crazy. If you were I say 40% gators I would still disagree strongly, but at least that would be closer.
More gators than canes? Delusional and unrealistic. No way in hell.
Posted by: Canesfan_1 | May 04, 2013 at 01:16 PM
There was more than 40% FSU fans at the game last year, it was basically a presidential election split at best, 47/53. Nothing delusional about a projected 50/50 split or unrealistic at all.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | May 04, 2013 at 01:27 PM
CF1, yeah, I've been to two home games, but they were in the Orange Bowl in '03 and '04. Wasn't against FSU or UF. I've been to 1 bowl game, Cokers last bowl, when Shannon was named HC. I don't think its unrealistic at all. I'm not saying its all going to be Orange and Blue. But so long as they keep beating us, their fans will continue to make the trip to our house. I am guessing this year there are more Gator fans then ever before. They will be confident. They are all high on the scent of their own SEC farts. I don't really care what Marshall Faulk has to say anyways. Canes need to take care of business and get that respect back. The way it looked for FSU on TV was an even split. I can't remember UF the last time around. To your credit, your post has me thinking that FSU depends on how the teams are doing. UF game, I expect around a 50/50 split with all their recent success. It will still be early in the season. If Miami is sucking when FSU comes out, I would expect a very weak Hurricane fan turnout.

If the team struggles this year, the fans are going to freaking lose it. If the D is bad again you can kiss this blog goodbye! OGV will get banned. CoCane will bring the FCC down on SOUP. Herbi will jump off a bridge when the DTs committ somewhere else and UMike will get arrested after fighting someone at a game. The last anyone will have heard from Solar will be he just left with his kayak one day.

I don't want to upset anyone CF1, but just imagine the fallout of a 2-3 start. On second thought, don't. Scary, too scary. Now I need a beer.

Dude...also know that many UM fans are still suffering from PTSD for the last seven years running and that keeps many of them away from the games too. Hard core fans like myself and others (OGV included) go to the games even when we have to drive 3-5 hours to get there and stay overnight at a hotel which just adds to the cost.
There have been many times when for noon games I have left at 6 AM and driven down 3.5 hours to tailgate and then driven back home after the game another 3.5 hours after the game and gotten home after 7 PM.
But many so-called canes fans who live in SoFl don't go and will not go until we start winning again. They don't want to leave the stadium embarrassed either.
It is a longer drive home after a loss. Trust me on this one.

Yes, but again the question was the UF game, and to say there will be more gator fans is just dead wrong. It won't ebpven be 40%. I go to all the games, like Soup, so I've got a good feel for this. We will be 1-0 with a lot of optimism when we p,ay the gators.
Sure it might be as many as 35% gators, bot keep in mind that's a hell of a lot. That's about 25,000 fans out of the 70,000 or so that will be there.
At last years FSU game it was about 25-30% or 20,000+. That's a lot.
The only way FSU gets around 50% is if we've only won a couple of games going in. If that's the case Ono is gone and Golden is on a very hot seat. A dream scenario for OGV
But again, gators: 30-35% MAX
Posted by: Canesfan_1 | May 04, 2013 at 09:59 PM
Also, it's so true about many of our fans, though.
Yes they'll show up for the Florida game, but a lot of those people are not real fans. They bitch all day long but find a million excuses not to go to the other games. Anybody that lives in the tricounty area and doesn't go, are flat out lying if they say they're fans. They're NOT. Just a bunch of lame talk.
Posted by: Canesfan_1 | May 04, 2013 at 10:03 PM
You're probably right that there won't be more Gators fans than Miami. But the point I was trying to make is that IDC if its 100% Gator trash. Miami needs to take their SWAG back. They can beat Florida. But they gotta want it now. They gotta be giving it their all now so they can be ready when the time comes. If we can take away their run game and Morris can move the ball, we should win. Unless D'Onofrio has the corners playing 10 yards off on 3rd and 3.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | May 04, 2013 at 10:38 PM
When do the new comers get on campus? Does Golden already have them on a diet and workout plan? We need guys to contribute and beef up! If you are one of the players that reads this blog, get off your d@mn phone or computer and go hit the weights. You need to beat Florida and you have work to do.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | May 04, 2013 at 10:43 PM
If you have already worked out today then write an essay to D'Onofrio about how the team feels they shouldn't play so far off the receivers, especially on third down. Essays should be a minimum 3 pages.

Powered by another strong start from junior lefthander Bryan Radziewski, the Miami Hurricanes clinched their weekend series against visiting St. John's with a 4-2 victory Saturday night at Alex Rodriguez Park.
Radziewski, who entered the contest with a team-leading 0.95 ERA, was efficient once again for the Hurricanes, owners of a five-game home winning streak. The southpaw went eight innings, scattering six hits while allowing just one earned run.
The Miami, Fla., native, who was named to the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list earlier in the week, fanned eight Red Storm batters on the night, bringing his impressive season total to 81 in just 64.2 innings. He managed to maintain his ERA under one run for the season, as it moved to 0.97 after the outing.
Senior Chantz Mack celebrated his birthday with a 3-for-3 day at the plate, including what proved to be the game-winning run on an RBI triple in the fifth.
After an offensive barrage from the Hurricanes (31-18) in game one of the series, it was the visitors who struck first on a picturesque night for baseball at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.

Soup is spot on about the attendance. My guess it will be about 45,000 Canes fans to 30,000 Gators fans at Sun Lifeonon September 7th. Can August 30th get here already.
