In case you were not paying attention the first official weekend of Summer just ended. During this time of year many people like to take some time off from their hectic lives and busy schedules and simply get away from it all by enjoying the beautiful outdoors and the many attractions across Florida.
College football fans are no different as the time between Spring practice and Fall preparations for the upcoming season provide an opportunity to decompress, disconnect and take some time away from the game to recharge their batteries before the tailgating and game day activities resume.
So just in case you were out kayaking on a spring-fed lake in North Florida, or maybe on your annual Summer family vacation at Disney World in Central Florida, or or taking a leisurely stroll on a sunny beach in South Florida, or just hiding under a the shade of a big oak tree at Bok Tower trying to avoid the oppressive heat, you might have missed it.
Canespace would like to bring you this very important public service announcement, especially for all of you talented and aspiring high school football players out there:
If U want to be a Miami Hurricane then U better get on board quick, because the train is leaving the station, and once it is full and moving down the tracks, it ain't stopping or coming back for anybody.
Al Golden and his staff landed a freight train load of talent this weekend with, count them, not five, not six, not seven, but as many as EIGHT new verbal commitments during the last week with most coming this past weekend. Now, no matter how you dissect or analyze it, that is impressive!
During the last of several Golden Football Camps on the lovely UM campus in Coral Gables the scholarships were being snapped up by talented recruits at a record breaking pace. By most estimates the Hurricanes now have around 16 solid verbal commits for the 2014 class and it is only June!
Al Golden and his staff have done miraculously well in spite of the difficult circumstances that stem from the on-going NCAA situation surrounding the athletic department off the field and from several years of middle of the pack performance on the field.
So that begs the question: When the NCAA mess is finally over (should be soon) and the Hurricanes start winning and competing for ACC titles and national championships again on a regular basis (should be soon) what will Golden and his staff be able to do then?

The NCAA now says McNair's request to provide the entire investigative file should have been denied because he didn't prove “good cause.” In its 185-word conclusion, the NCAA says “it has a … right not to be dragged through expensive and intrusive discovery simply because McNair does not like credibility determination made and then affirmed by fourteen independent lawyers, law professors, and institutional and conference representatives.”
That would be a reference to the infractions and appeals committees who pronounced sentence on McNair. The same committees who, it can be argued, put Miami and others through “expensive and intrusive discovery” in long and lingering cases.
##WOW! The nerve of these imbeciles. They just can't hide their contentiousness when somebody challenges their snotty asses. Look at how they present McNair's name above...not Todd McNair, not Mr.McNair, just...McNair. And then they had the nerve to say this about McNair...
“a lying, morally bankrupt criminal, in my view, and a hypocrite of the highest order,” according to one piece of NCAA communication. REALLY?!

It was the news Jim Kelly was hoping for following surgery to remove part of his jaw that was stricken with cancer. Last week on a follow-up visit to the physicians that performed his surgery June 7th, Kelly was told he was cancer free and for now would avoid chemotherapy.
"I found out great news on Wednesday," Kelly said Monday at the opening of his 26th annual Jim Kelly Football Camp. "I don’t have to go through radiation treatment and chemo, which is a blessing. From what I’ve been told everything that they did in surgery, if I had to do radiation or chemo it would put me way back."

I wanted to piggyback on O_C and UMikes comments about the game against the Gators this year. I know a lot of people will say that game is not a MUST WIN, because its not against an ACC Coastal team, but I say it is. Golden needs to show we are back and that he can outcoach Muschamp. The reward for beating the Gators is the jackpot at the slot machine. It gets you everything you want for our program. To me, no singular game next year means as much. It is the most important game we could win.
Posted by: The Dude | June 24, 2013 at 02:24 PM
The Dude, agree with one caveat... We need to win 10 games in addition to beating UiF.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | June 24, 2013 at 02:35 PM
Agree with all of you with one other requirement. We have to beat UF and FSU and win 10 games. Do that and we'll get the tackles and then some!
Go 'canes!

Beat UF and win 9 more then beat FSU in ACC title game.

So we get to beat them twice this year? Yes please! And then we should play UF in the Sugar or Orange Bowl and beat them twice as well!
Go 'canes!!

Lt. Philip Nolan @TheStateOfTheU
The first DT in the last RT's link comes in at number 27. So if Miami lands all of the kids they are after above him, did we fail?
Lt. Philip Nolan @TheStateOfTheU
To put that another way, according to @larryblustein, the top 26 players in SoFla next year are not DT's. Miami is after almost all of them.
Lt. Philip Nolan @TheStateOfTheU
Should we abandon going after those top 26 simply because they aren't DT's? We only have 25 scholarships to hand out per year.
Posted by: UMike | June 24, 2013 at 03:14 PM
Lt. Philip Nolan @TheStateOfTheU
In fact, in that SoFla top 80 players list, only 1 (one, uno, single) is listed as a DT. Can't wait to hear the arguments next year.

K.C. Jones of ESPN is picking the Canes as the ACC sleeper pick. Seems there are higher expectations among national media for the Canes in 2013. I guess they are starting to figure out what we on the space already know.

Well it's good to see us raking in more recruits, although the Herb is disturb, that another big DT got away, in Clarke. Yes sports fans it's June and the same trend continues and that's us not sealing the deal with the the road graders on Defense. I know we are all excited about the recent commits but the Herb warns, if we can't get some talent, not just fillers, but talent at DT, the same thing is going to keep happening to us. Not everybody we get is going to be a 4 or 5 star player but you have to have some talent. I like that we are getting some big bodies at LB but once again we need difference makers and only time will tell how big the difference is.
