ESPN recently updated and released their Top 300 player list for the 2014 recruiting class. Upon quick review, here is what we found out about the class of 2014 players verbally committed to the Miami Hurricanes:
- UM has a total of 6 players verbally commited that are on the ESPN Top 300 players list.
- Three of the players are ranked in the top 150 at #20, #45, #133.
- Three players are ranked between 151-300 at #216, #253, #289.
- Miami's highest ranked players are RB Yearby (#20), OT McDermott (#45) and OT Darling (#133).
- Miami also has OT Reilly Gibbons (#216), QB Brad Kaaya (#253) and WR Darrell Langham (#289) on the list.
With Miami in desperate need of some "big uglies" in the middle of the defensive line we payed special attention to that position in the Top 300 list. Here is what we found in our brief review of that list:
- There are a total of 23 defensive tackles in the ESPN top 300 players.
- Eleven of the DTs are listed in the top 150 and twelve are ranked between 151 and 300.
- Of the 23 DT's on the list only 8 are currently verbally committed, with UF and FSU having one each respectively. UM has none.
- Only 4 of the 23 defensive tackles on the Top 300 list are from the State of Florida.
- UF has a verbal from #167 DT Anthony Moten from Fort Lauderdale and FSU has a verbal from #209 DT Demarcus Christmas from Bradenton.
- Miami is thought to be the leading school for both #147 DT Kahiri Clark from Hollywood and #150 DT Travonte Valentine from Palm Bay. In case you didn't notice, both players are ranked higher than the players that verbally committed to UF (#167) and FSU (#209).
- In addition, according to ESPN, Miami has offers out to Top 150 DTs #3 Andrew Brown from VA, #85 Thomas Holley from NY and #108 Garrald McDowell from LA.
In addition, we found out that ESPN reviewed just 1,000 players to get to their Top 300 rankings. With an estimated 1 million high school football players in the U.S. we found that fact very interesting. Based on this fact it is clear that there are still many diamonds left to be found in the rough.
Furthermore, there were a total of 13 players that garnered the coveted five-star rating, up from 11 during the first evaluation period. And, among the top 300 players, it was not surprising that Florida had the most players on the list at 51, followed by Texas with 35, then California and Georgia with 29.

Finally settling back to normal, friends! Work settling down (kind of), and the kids activities are now only slightly unworkable as opposed to impossible. Right in time for Steele's mag tomorrow, and hopefully someone decides to talk about the hearings.

From Tito...
2014 Hardee (Fla.) defensive end Keyon Brown is rated as one of the top pass rushers in the nation and is looking to focus on improving one skill this summer that is sure to take his talents to the next level.
“My speed, I’m trying to get faster. So I’m trying to work on speed.”
While some recruits find the recruiting process to be stressful at times, Brown has yet to feel any stress during it.
“I think it’s kinda fun. I mean I can understand where it can be stressful in the middle of the season or towards the end of the season, but right now I’m enjoying and having a good time with it.”
The 6’3 240 pound end prospect has been hearing from multiple top schools such as Georgia, Florida State, Miami, Clemson and Tennessee.
In the past, Brown has refrained from naming a leader. However, there is a new school in the front for his services.
“Georgia, Georgia is my leader right now, they’re sticking out now.”
The Hardee star has built a good relationship with the staff in Athens and likes the team’s defense.
“Coach (Todd) Grantham and coach (Bryan McClendon) came down twice, I’m talking to them a lot and they seem like great guys. I know Georgia’s defense is great and I think Georgia would be a great school.”
While the Bulldogs may the lead at the moment, he still has Miami in the mix.
“I still like them a lot, it’s still a great school. I wouldn’t say Miami’s far behind Georgia right now, it’s just that I like Georgia a lot right now.”
The star defensive end is in constant contact with Coach Jethro Franklin and maintains a good relationship with him.
“My mom just talked to Coach Franklin today, my mom and him are good friends. They talk as much as me and him do. They have a great relationship and I have a great relationship with him, so thats good. I would say they’re one of the main schools recruiting me pretty hard.”
Brown is very intrigued by Miami’s campus and always seems to enjoy visiting it.
“That’s one of the main reason’s I like Miami. I can comeback at any time. It feels like a family down there and I can visit at any time.”
The top ranked rush edge player is planning on returning to the Miami campus sometime during the summer.
“I’m sure I’ll be back down there, it’s only about two and a half hours. I’ll probably be back down there sometime, I just don’t know when.”
Brown is looking to have his final decision following his senior season.
“I’m pretty sure it will be after my season, I mean I’m not putting an exact time on it but I’m pretty sure it will be after my season.”

More Tito...
2014 Scottsdale Community College (AZ) linebacker Antonio Smothers was anxious to pick a school coming out of high school and couldn’t wait to play college football, but he ended up taking a different route to get there.
“I did poorly on my ACT. I could have taken it again, but I decided not because I had to pay for it. So at that point I knew I had to go the JUCO route.”
Smothers then made another switch after attending his first junior college.
“The first year, I actually went to Arizona Western, but that didn’t work out either too much and then I transferred to Scottsdale Community College.”
Smothers’ most recent season was a very good one that landed him some honors as well as some interest from top colleges.
“Last season I played really well. I ended up making First Team All-Conference and First Team All- Region. I’ve been talking to Kansas State, UM, Cincinnati, University of Arizona and the University of Memphis.”
While the 6’2 237 pound prospect was originally planning to not name any leaders, he has narrowed his choice down to two schools.
“I was kinda playing it even at first, but now it looks like Kansas State or the University of Miami.”
The Scottsdale linebacker was recently in Coral Gables for a visit and had quite the time while in Miami.
“The visit went very well. I enjoyed the Miami life, but as well as the football aspect of it, like how do I fit in their schemes. I loved coach Michael Barrow, the way he coaches and what he is outside of football as a man. Al Golden seemed like a nice guy too.”
Smother’s got a chance to tour the campus and spend quality time with the coaches.
“So basically, of course we ate well. I got to see the facility, we watches some film and they just showed me around.”
The JUCO star really enjoyed his time with linebackers coach Michael Barrow as well as head coach Al Golden.
“With Coach Barrow, he is a mixture of both cool and funny. It’s bigger then football. I believe he can teach me a lot of things about football but also teach me how to be a man. So we bonded instantly.”
“With Coach Golden, he is a cool guy. At first he’s kind of intimidating, I can’t lie. But after talking to him he made me believe that they needed me there and that was good.”
Smother’s has one more trip planned to Kansas State and should be set to make his decisions once that is over.
“Definitely after I visit Kansas State, so I’ll say sometime before the season starts.”
Smothers described himself as a very hard hitting linebacker.
“I’m very good in space, but also when it’s time to hit I hit with killer instincts.”

### A source said UM ended up disputing at least parts of most of the 18 charges the NCAA leveled against Miami. UM internally has discussed how many scholarship cuts it would accept for football and basketball (suffice it to say it's a modest number) but likely would appeal if it exceeds that number.
Meanwhile, Shalala and NCAA president Mark Emmert have discussed the case, but Emmert apparently isn’t getting involved in UM’s discipline. He wasn't at UM's hearings this past week, which isn't unusual.
### Though Sports Illustrated did good work exploring the NCAA enforcement staff’s problems --- fired investigator Abigail Grantstein said superiors told her, in general, to “find a way to prove” any allegations -- this week’s piece printed but provided no concrete evidence to substantiate Nevin Shapiro’s claims that he received inside information from 16 UM players, four coaches and four athletic department staffers (none identified by name), nor did it provide any kind of proof for his very hard-to-believe claim that he won ALL 23 bets he placed on UM games as a result (while often betting against UM).
Nor did SI prove that UM people knew he was seeking information for bets, which Shapiro said was the case. With regards to Shapiro's claims, the NCAA is wisely ignoring the SI story, having already investigated the gambling angle a year ago.
### SI disclosed that like the NCAA, it wired money to Shapiro’s commissary account for pay for his phone calls with them. Shapiro asked to be on SI’s cover; SI compromised by mentioning the story on the front, above a photo of two Detroit Tigers.
### Rich Johanningmeier, who spent 50 hours interviewing Shapiro before retiring last May, told SI: “To us, it’s not relevant if he has an ax to grind. The point is: What are your facts and are they correct? Nevin falls into that category… Is he basically telling a true story? Yes. Is there some embellishment? Yes, too.”... The first time Shapiro met Johanningmeier and since-fired investigator Amin Najjar in prison, he told them: "If you guys aren't ready to make history, don't enter."

I'm unsure if this has been covered, but "State" covers the safeties and it's a pretty interesting read.
- They predict Bush to increase production to due increase in size
- Highsmith is a touch slow, but should improve as a senior
- They're most excited about Jenkins; he needs more playing time
- Rodgers needs to help out on turnovers
- No love for Fentress. He's a special teams guru (why in the effing crap would they move him from linebacker?)
- Recommend that Carter redshirt and develop before hitting the field (good call)

Again, possibly a repost from Athlon's recent articles:
Athlon's ACC All-Conference:
RB: Duke Johnson
G: Brandon Linder
KR: Duke Johnson
Second Team
DE: Anthony Chickillo
LB: Denzel Perryman
Third Team
C: Shane McDermott
T: Susan's Man
S: Deon Bush
----
ACC in general:
- UM atop the Coastal at 9-4 due to confidence in Golden, return of Morris, Duke Johnson, and the schedule (yay!).
- They expect the Turtles to get seven wins (funny).
- They're not confident in Logan Thomas as a senior
- They don't like Syracuse due to loss of talent
- Duke won't reach a bowl game in consecutive years

Both are D.
Obviously, as UMike said, there could always be a reason for giving a "silent" as opposed to announcing, but I don't think either are "to get coaches off their back".
I think they both just have a reason they don't want in the spotlight.

Athlon should have made the first team QB anyone that plays our defense because they all look like Heisman Trophy winners against Mark D'Onofrio.

We've got a few "silent recruits" on D now, or at least it seems that way from the impact they've made the past few years.
What we need is for someone to step up and get loud!
I think Santana Moss once commented after the Peach Bowl game, "in big games, big time players make big plays". He sure lived up to it!!

The woman who falsely accused football star Brian Banks of raping her is being forced to pay big time.
A judge has ordered that the woman pay $2.6 million to Banks for ruining his life with false allegations. The lies caused him to lose numerous scholarship offers to college and also led to a prison sentence of over five years.
Wanetta Gibson told lies to authorities when she accused Banks of assaulting her when the two attended Long Beach Poly High, where Banks was both a student and football star.
After the conviction, the girl sued the school district and received $1.5 million. The conviction was overturned when Gibson was secretly recorded admitting that she made the whole thing up.
Years later, Gibson confessed and Banks was released. The woman is being forced to repay a $750,000 settlement to the school, plus attorneys fees, interest and another $1 million in punitive damages.

UNION CITY, Calif. (AP) — A 6-year-old San Francisco Bay area boy has died after he was attacked by his family's dog.
Authorities say the attack occurred around 11 a.m. Monday at the boy's Union City home. The dog has been described as a pit bull or pit bull mix.
He died at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto. His name has not been released.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that a man who answered the phone at the family's home declined to comment.

Like I said a few weeks ago, Walter Tucker is a LB. He'll get a shot at RB, though.
From Thread Killa:
Walter Tucker update
-Will start at LB in the fall with the ability to play RB
-Is 6-0 212 right now
-Played SAM and backup RB for Heritage
-Had football offers from USF and UCF
-Says he and Artie Burns have ran track together since they were 10
-Says they're best friends off the track but on the track they're enemies
-Says he and Burns go back and forth winning events
-Says they know each other well
-Says Burns wanted him go to Miami 3 months ago
-Starts classes on 25 June
-Says he and Coach Rumph have been talking about The U for a while
-Says he loves Miami and this is a wish come true

Ariz doin work...
**It isn’t rare for a recruit to say they’re going to help recruit their class, but Brad Kaaya is taking it to a whole new level. Kaaya has been doing a lot of research on who Miami is recruiting, watching highlight videos, and even asking me questions about the class in order to get a clearer picture for himself. It is just amazing to me because you hear of recruits every year that say they’re going to get other top recruits along with them, but what Kaaya is doing is different. While he is constantly talking with other recruits, he is also genuinely interested in learning more about each prospect instead of just looking at their rankings on recruiting sites.
**Travonte Valentine is one of the biggest names that Miami is recruiting right now. There have been long-standing rumors that Valentine has poor grades, but I’ve recently heard differently. Apparently the issue with Valentine is not his GPA (2.9), but the number of credits he needs. He is taking multiple courses this summer to catch up with what he needs and a person working with him is optimistic he will be able to get everything squared away without going prep.
**I recently spoke with Georgia DE Justin Jones and I got very good vibes from him about the ‘Canes. He really enjoyed his visit a couple weeks ago and Miami isn’t going up against traditional powerhouses for him right now either. He wants to commit before his season and the sense I get is that Miami is the leader right now and is friends with recent commit Juwon Young. Jones loves the presence of Georgia players on the Miami roster right now. He visited NC State and Wake Forest last weekend.
**There have been a lot of people requesting an update on Dalvin Cook, but there isn’t much of one right now. The toughest part for Miami right now seems to be getting him on campus, where he hasn’t been since back in January. I really expect things to heat up with him during basketball season, when his brother DeAndre Burnett will be playing a big role on the upcoming season’s team. Cook will most likely be on campus a good amount during that period and that is when I see a big push being made. Miami still wants him.
**Little update on Carol City ATH Trayone Gray: He told me he wants to go to camp this weekend and I’ll be interested to see if he makes it out there. “Chocolate” is as impressive as anyone physically and Tito Benach had high praises for him at the Miami Dolphins 7-on-7: “-Trayone Gray from Carol City is a man-child. When standing next to Trayone and not knowing who he is your under the impression that he has to play linebacker or safety but his talent and size at QB is unbelievable. He is supremely talented and it's a scary thought to consider that he can most likely play multiple other positions as well.”
Gray had this to say about Miami camp: “I will go not just for offers but to compete with anyone. I will let my actions do all my talking there.”
**North Carolina WR Braxton Berrios will be at camp this weekend with the goal of earning an offer. Although Berrios recently released a top 5 without Miami in it, if the 'Canes offer then I expect them to jump right to the top of his list. Berrios has a strong family base in South Florida and his father graduated from Southridge in 1986. I'm excited to see him up against defensive backs from Florida.

In other news ....
Many folks might argue that Steven Phillips deserves any break he can get: Convicted of a number of sex crimes in the '80s, Phillips was exonerated by the courts after spending 24 years in prison when DNA implicated another man. He was provided with a "compensation package" totaling around $6 million for those two and a half decades — and the woman who divorced him while he was in jail, Traci Tucker, wants a cut. Last year a judge awarded her $150,000, and now Phillips is appealing that decision: "To make a claim on those years I spent in prison is really freaking outrageous," he says.
