There seems to be a lot of controversy surrounding the popular high school scouting services and their associated recruiting ranking systems that are published each year.
For some fans it is all about "the stars", as in how many stars does Johnny Rockets have attached to his name. These faithful fans follow the star system ratings like a religion.
However, for others, they simply do not by into the hype and dismiss the star rankings as utter nonsense that sells subscriptions to the schools with the largest fan bases.
Either way, their is no disputing the fact that college sports fans pay big money and an incredible amount of time and attention reading and comparing these three sites rankings of players their school is potentially recruiting.
Each year three of the most well known sites - Rivals, Scout and ESPN - release what they refer top as their top 300, 250 or 150 players lists. We thought we would take a look at some of the players that are allegedly being recruited by and have scholarship offers from Miami.
The listings below are: Player, Rivals, Scout and ESPN rankings (in that order):
Sony Michel: #6, #10, #16.
Dalvin Cook: #24, #71, #20
Joseph Yearby: #42, #25, #18
Ermon Lane: #32, #53, #25
KC McDermott: #40, #16, #52
Keyon Brown: #79, #164, UR
Artavis Scott: #81, #122, #85
Thomas Holley: #84, #70, #93
Isaiah Wynn: #89, #196, #113
Treon Harris: #130, #87, UR
Johnnie Dixon: #135, UR, #43
Elisha Shaw: #137, #72, #60
Khairi Clark: #139, #18, #146
Travis Rudolph: #153, #79, #79
Trevor Darling: #178, #108, #130
Brad Kaaya: #200, #297, UR
Now in case you haven't noticed, the rankings are generally all over the place and the variances between the sites can be as many as 100 spots on the charts from site to site.
Furthermore, there seems to be no logical rhyme or reason as to which players get a top 25 ranking versus a top 125 ranking much less a top 225 ranking as each site has their highs and lows.
So what do you think about these stats and the Top 150, 250 and 300 players from the various sites? Are they accurate and on target or is their method and system antiquated and inaccurate?
I think the fact that the staff hasn't contacted Sony since his commitment tells me all I need to know about whether the staff believes there's business shenanigans going on there. Not hard to read between the lines.

Felipe, I agree 100%..this staff doesn't give up on recruits simply because they commit elsewhere...especially one of the top players on their board
Posted by: UMike | June 09, 2013 at 03:49 PM
Rumor is 2015 recruit De'Vante Phillips may have committed today
Posted by: UMike | June 09, 2013 at 04:10 PM
Oh man, I like that rumor.
And any Central kids that commit will not decommit with our coach there.

Al Golden is the real deal! He has turned this mess around under the worst of circumstances and continues to build bridges into communities where there were none.
UM has a top 5 offense (my opinion), a top 5 special teams corps (my opinion), and a defense which should be improved and is slowly rebuilding through recruiting.
Al had every opportunity to leave and likely could have been offered the TENN job if he had shown interest.
I can't wait to see the naysayers tuck tail and come in here to feast on the nonsense that they have been spewing and continue to spew about the Hurricanes.
Go 'canes!!

Soup as always great job!! I am miffed why you would want to spend one minute at a UM football game with "The Negative One"!
Go 'canes!!
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | June 09, 2013 at 04:40 PM
Think the thing that has our jimmies rustled the most (as a general statement of fanbase frustration) is that the defense is the lagging indicator of where we are. Seems everyone who is a Canes fan just loves a mauling defense more than anything else, lol.
Posted by: Felipe | June 09, 2013 at 04:48 PM
But no golden is doing amazing, as is SOUP. All is well, !@&# the NCAA this week.
Posted by: Felipe | June 09, 2013 at 04:52 PM
!@@#$% the NCAA is right! And !@@##$$%^ Shapiro as well! And !!@@##$%^ Sports Illustrated if they pile on this week as well. Are they just going to re-write Charles Robinson's hack piece? My guess is it will be a "Miami's guilty, but the NCAA screwed up" fluff piece!!
Go 'canes!
P.S. We've all been frustrated Felipe, but to refer to Al Golden as recently as a few weeks ago as the "Lie with the Tie" is way beyond frustrated. It's not accurate, it's ignorant, and it won't be forgotten when UM starts winning again.
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | June 09, 2013 at 05:04 PM
LMAO.
That is all.

Sota...ease up, have a beer (or three) and wait until the winning occurs to dig in deep. It will happen this year so U will not have to wait long! Pace yourself.
OGV...I have RESPECT for U holding back and biting your tounge. See U in Miami, Tampa and Tallahassee this year. It is gonna be FUN for ALL of the UM fans who travel deep into enemy territory with NO FEAR like U and me!
Posted by: SOUP | June 09, 2013 at 09:08 PM
Al Golden was offered the Tennessee job a month AFTER Charlie Strong turned it down.
Posted by: 4-Real | June 09, 2013 at 09:15 PM
So what. Al Golden had options if he wanted to leave UM. He's here because even in light of all of UM's current challenges Al knows that he can win in Miami. Jimmy Johnson, Alonzo Highsmith, ESPN, most local H.S. coaches all know Al can win here.
The only one who doesn't have faith in Al is Dan Sileo and his minion(s).
Go 'canes!

Dan Silio and his minions 4-Real. You got that? Sounds like a . . . CONSPIRACY!
LMAO. Like I said, that is all.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | June 09, 2013 at 09:46 PM
I hear 'ya Soup but I'm the one holding back. I'll try to be more respectful going forward. See you in Miami and Tampa this year.
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | June 09, 2013 at 09:49 PM
This has been a really well played finals but the officiating tonight has been much more suspect than in game 1.
Hopefully the Heat don't tire out in the 4th again and can hold on here for the win.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | June 09, 2013 at 09:53 PM
It's not conspiracy, it's idiocy. To process all of the available data we get about the football team and come to the conclusion that Al Golden was not the right hire at the right time in nonsense.
And to pump a degenerate gamblers pick for the ACC Coastal with a dozen more respectable publications picking UM is ridiculous.

Heat will win because of the refs tonight......with the next 3 games in SA, the spurs will win the next 3 games. Home court is huge!!!! This is the best game the heat have played all season and game 1 is now the second best game they have played (they still loss).....look for the heat to fall flat the next 2 games and game 5 will be close.
The refs have been in the heats corner the whole playoffs!!!!

NBA script is going according to plan.
Heat in 7.
Posted by: SOUP | June 09, 2013 at 10:28 PM
You should come up to Atlanta for a Braves game. B.J. Upton's here you know!!
I'm heading out to L.A. to see my kid in a few. We're gonna meet my Dad in Santa Monica for the week of the 4th.
When I get back I'm gonna load up on Braves games till football season. It's a great park if you've never been up here, plus they're winning!!

You too? This whole post season feels scripted by the league. LeBron shoots two when he should have drawn a charge, momentum seemed designed to go with the Heat tonight.
I don't think it was blatant, but the refs can control the flow in Bball unlike any other team sport.

Stories I could tell from Buckhead...
Posted by: SOUP | June 09, 2013 at 10:41 PM
I hear ya! My daughter lives in North Hollywood so I'll be making my way to Cali for my vaca. I can't wait! Matt's family lives in Calabasas so I'm going to see them as well.
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | June 09, 2013 at 10:53 PM
By the way Buckhead is kinda lame compared to when you were probably up here. From what I hear the club scene from a few years ago is gone now. It's all condo's and restaurants now. It's still fun, just not debaucherous!

5-Star Challenge Update
WR Ermon Lane says he is wide open. His mother is going to play a HUGE role in his final selection. Will visit Alabama in July. Lane also mentioned that Barrow is a small factor because Barrow is always around his family.
- WR Travis Rudolph is wide open. He says everything regarding position at Miami is cleared up now. They want him strictly as a receiver and that there is no more DB talk.

Florida State senior receiver Greg Dent was arrested and charged Sunday night with sexual assault on a person over the age of 12 years old, according to the Leon County Sherrif's Office online booking detail.

Give 'em all a ribbon! I'm sure we'll lose a few of these recruits but the fact that they are willing to sign on the spot tells me that the message is good. We picked up three in June while Richt probably lost three here in Georgia this month. Once UM moves past the NCAA nonsense then Al should be able to recruit on par with any team in the country.

These rankings change so much during the season! Kaaya for example, who is listed at 200, will probably move up since the Elite 11 staff selected him this month. Canes recruiters are smart in chasing down underrated players.
