Tito doin work...

I was able to speak with Booker T Washington head coach Ice Harris at the Nike 7 on 7 event regarding his football team, prospects and the University of Miami.

Q:Coach Harris, you guys were at the last tournament, the Dolphin 7 on 7, and now you’re at this one, the Nike 7 on 7. What are you guys trying to do this summer with these 7 on 7’s?

A: “Just trying to do a great job of team building. This is a great opportunity for our team to continue to work together, to work on their schemes, to work on their relationships with coaches and players. These events are great for team building.

Q: Obviously, you guys are also getting ready for the regular season or the “Real Season” as some call it. What are you guys doing during the summer as far as workouts to get ready or get better?

A: “Training, making sure to continue get better in the weight room, to get better in the classroom phase of the game through film, through the playbook area. As well as getting out there and just running and getting into shape, trying to be in the best shape possible going into the season so we can play at a higher level for the schedule we have for our student athletes.”

Q: You guys have a strong team again this year with guys like Treon Harris, Nigel Bethel as well as Chad Thomas, but talk about the young guys for a bit. Guys like Mark Walton, Shaquille Green and James King.

A: “The underclassmen summer is about making sure to keep getting them better through events like this and other camps that we are doing throughout the summer. We’re just trying to make sure to establish that depth because all the back up guys are one play away from being a starter. So we wanna make sure we prepare them to be starters because that can at anytime. Shaquille Green is developing well, after last year really learning the tempo. This summer he has shown a great job with his training, he had a great spring so now we are looking for him to take that next step that we know he can to be able to contribute this season. James King, he is working well. I think our linebacker situation looks good, especially after losing Matthew Thomas, so our young guys have done a great job of stepping up. But the summer is about competing, getting in shape and doing the things they need to show they can become big time player in a big time program.”

Q: With upperclassmen like, Chad Thomas, Nigel Bethel and Treon Harris how do you guide them through the recruiting process. Obviously, the recruiting process is something that can be strenuous and tiring, but what do you guys tell them usually?

A: “The main thing is that their taking their time understanding the situation, talking to every school, look at every situation and then with your heart and with your family everything will work out to choose the best school possible at that point. But for right now, were just telling everybody to continue to build that relationship with all the colleges around the country and with that concept and that mental aspect about recruiting they should handle it well throughout the process.”

Q: What are your thoughts on the recent commits Miami has gotten, they’re beginning to get down into south Florida and get all the young and local products. What are your thoughts on it?

A: “I think they’re doing a great job. I think coach (Al) Golden and his staff are doing a tremendous job in terms of making sure locally that they stay home and get the best guys possible at home that are gonna be able to help that program grow and get better to go into national championship setting. I think they’re on the right track in terms of doing the right things they’re supposed to do here in south Florida.”

hahahahahaha...

Just wanted to answer the question I have seen pop up a few times here on TMB. How come Rivals.com is not at The Opening and Elite 11 Finals?

To be clear - this is not a complaint; rather, this is an explanation for anyone who asks:
Rivals.com applied for credentials numerous times leading into this week. However, Student Sports (operators of The Opening and Elite 11) chose not to credential the Rivals.com National Team (Mike Farrell & his motley crew).

While we are disappointed, we must respect Student Sports' decision. Credentials have been issued, though, to select Rivals.com team sites on a case-by-case basis.

As Rivals.com subscribers, you can read any content item and watch any video throughout the network - regardless of team site affiliation.

As a reminder. the majority of these athletes did participate a few weeks ago at the 3-day Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge at Soldier Field in Chicago. Our team knocked out a staggering amount of subscriber-only video and written content (and some free too). Click below to check it out.

Thanks for being a Rivals.com subscriber and for understanding what went on behind the scenes ...

The Miami Hurricanes' summer recruiting run continued Friday when the program picked up its 19th pledge for the Class of 2014 in little known Miami Booker T. Washington defensive end Demetrius Jackson.

The 6-5, 230-pound senior played varsity football for the first time this spring and was known more for what he did on the basketball court, earning All-Dade Second Team honors this past season.

"People may not know much about him right now, but they will," Tornadoes offensive coordinator Tim "Ice" Harris Jr. said. "He's a freak talent who played plenty of football growing up. He just turned his focus to basketball in high school. But he knows his best way to a scholarship is football. A lot of schools who saw him this spring were impressed."

Jackson had a sack, forced fumble and fumble recovery as well as a few batted balls at the line of scrimmage in the spring game for the defending Class 4A state champions. He has offers from Arkansas and FIU and had committed to the Razorbacks last week, but the school didn't accept his oral commitment because he hadn't visited the campus yet.

"He's going to be like a rush end/outside linebacker in 3-4 look," Harris Jr. said. "He can rush the quarterback. You look at him at [four-star recruit] Chad Thomas they compliment each other well. Demetrius probably has him in speed, movements. That's going to work out well."

Harris Jr. said Jackson is already a full college qualifier and has a 3.0 GPA and scored 21 on the ACT. Harris Jr. said Jackson is the cousin of former Booker T. defensive ends Joseph Jackson (South Florida) and Jonathan Jackson (FIU).

GILBERT COULD BE HEADED TO UM

Although it's not a 100 percent done deal according to sources at UM, reports are UM will also be adding former Wisconsin senior defensive end David Gilbert to its roster, just a couple months after the former Oakland Park Northeast High standout said he was ending his career with the Badgers due to foot injuries.

BadgerBlitz.com was the first to report the news Thursday night. Gilbert reportedly graduated in May would be eligible to play for the Hurricanes as a post-graduate.

Gilbert started 13 games last season, rolling up 42 tackles, 9.5 for loss, four sacks and three forced fumbles and earned honorable mention on the All-Big Ten Team.

Gilbert broke his right foot twice in 2011 and missed spring practice this past April to undergo more surgery on the same foot, repairing ligament damage this time.

As a senior at Northeast, Gilbert was an All-State First Team selection, racking up 57 tackles, nine sacks and eight tackles for loss in 2007.

> Canesport.com reported Friday that 2013 signee Ryheem Lockley is headed to Fork Union Military Academy, but says he will remain committed to UM and expects to arrive in Coral Gables in the spring. UM's sports information staff told The Miami Herald the only Summer II session arrivals were the five players reported earlier this week.

Old Skool

"I'm not going to talk about that" OSU coach Urban Meyer's response when asked about Aaron Hernandez

The Tampa Bay Times then followed that with an interesting factoid.

During Meyer's six years at FU 25 players were arrested 31 times. His record 65-15 or roughly two wins per arrest.

Sounds like the Dolphins should hold another half time tribute.

That is WAY too low for Brandon Linder and a touch too high for Porter. The others are about right.

Does anyone want to make predictions on the front seven two deep on defense beginning and ending the year?

Ohio_Cane

---------------------------------------

I don't like it considering there's something about Michael Johnson that's keeping Golden from offering. We need to hit on Valentine.

I say offer Johnson if they'll both commit on the spot lol

UMike

When you see a local product many times, including the camps, and do not offer, something is up. Since loosing our on Clark (at least for now) we do need to hit on Valentine, especially since we have been in "the lead" for a while now. Then again Clark was a lock lol

UMike

Valentine could just be trying to get his boy an offer...cause if they REALLY wanted to play together wouldnt Valentine just commit to Louisville along with Johnson lol

LB

Those are defensive tackles, right? If so, then it continues the trend. It's not meant as a knock or a prop, but simply data. UM misses out on their initial targets at that position.

They had a similar problem at tight end until last year (Dobard, Sandland).

The only way I can see to fix that problem is winning. Luckily, UM is set up to win big right now. There's no excuse for not taking an outright Coastal title and winning a bowl game.

-------
As for other targets: UM does an exceptional job at pretty much every other position (especially offensive line and receivers).

But the defensive tackle spot makes me scratch my head. If the coaches are deplorable, then why does UM consistently nab quality defensive ends (Chickillo, Hamilton, McCord, AQM)? System? I have no idea.

LB

On a positive note, if Tucker/Grace/Blue can challenge for the two deep... then it should help put a pin at the depth issues at linebacker.

Ohio_Cane

Ok LB and Herbie...sorry to pass this on..BUT..it appears DT Dequan Ivery is no longer on the roster.

This has been coming. Not going to post why on here.

4-Real

No need to elaborate on the Ivery situation cause we already know why he's leaving Ohio...he had no business being at UM in the first place! Lol

UMike

LB...I think it has a lot to do with what these recruits and their coaches or parents see and read. If they watch Miami and see a horrible defense and a team that cant stop the run or any decent mobile QB..they might think twice. They might question the scheme or coordinator etc. jmo any way

Then it seems obvious that when it is over and all is said and done that UM will have a Top 10 recruiting class in 2014. Winning BIG this year could make it Top 5.

I think UMike has been telling us that Lane is Bama bound and it now appears that Cook is a Gator for sure so it is time to move on from those two and shift our focus IMHO.

Berrios comments on recruiting

Has a top 5 of Tenn, Clemson, WV, Kentucky and South Carolina. It is subject to change if Ohio State and Miami offer. He thinks OSU is very close and says: "I camped at Miami and killed it, won wr mvp. I talk to the coaches and know they want to offer but haven't yet, I think there's politics involved but that's recruiting."

Miramar (Fla.) High School Class of 2015 CB Tyrek Cole is already considered to be one of the top south Florida prospects around. The electrifying talent is being recruited by some of the most prestigious college football programs in the nation. Last spring alone he racked up over ten scholarship offers.

The rising junior currently holds over 16 scholarship offers, but has no front runners at the moment. Although, he may not have any favorites, he did mention that Miami, Florida, Florida State, South Carolina, Texas, and Tennessee are recruiting him the hardest.

Of what he likes about Miami, Cole said, "The history of the program, and it's my hometown (school). It's also a great academic school, and a great defensive back school."

Knee deep into his summer break, Cole is focused on improving his game.

"Right now, I'm focused on working hard in the weight room, and getting quicker and faster," Cole said. "I'm actually going to the Friday Night Lights camp up in Gainesville soon."

Cole has not had the chance to visit many schools this summer, so visiting the University of Florida has him excited.

"I want to see the facilities, and meet the whole coaching staff," Cole said. "I just want to enjoy my time up there, and compete at the friday night lights event."

The standout prospect is looking for a school that can provide two major factors.

"First you have to go with the academic stand point, and after that is playing time," Cole said. "I'd rather play early."

Cole recently participated in one of IMG's 7-on-7 tournaments, and he learned a lot doing so.

"It was a great tournament," Cole said. "I played with a lot of competition, so it made me better. I also learned that you have to play every play a hundred percent, because at those tournaments you're playing with great players that have a lot of talent."

There have been rumors swirling around that Cole could be committing soon, but not even he is sure of when he will commit. It could be before the season or even after the season. At this point, he is just weighing all his option.

Miami Booker T. Washington Sr. High has been known to produce some of the most heralded football players in the nation throughout the years. So, it should come as no surprise that the Miami Hurricanes are putting a lot of their recruiting efforts into trying to persuade those prospects to stay home for college. Not only does this football program produce college ready players, they produce wins on the grid-iron as well. They are the reigning Class 4A State Champions, and they are primed to make a run to become back-to-back state champions.

"We have the potential to be very good," Tornadoes offensive coordinator Tim "Ice" Harris Jr. said. "On paper, I think this is probably one of our better team's with have had, even including last year's team-- Overall, the training has gone well and we look forward to the season. We feel we have a shot not only for the state championship, but also a national championship."

The Hurricane's coaching staff has already extended scholarship offers to four of Booker T. Washington's rising seniors, of which one has already verbally committed to the ‘Canes. That commitment came yesterday from defensive end Demetrius Jackson (6'5/225).

"It's huge for him and we are all excited for him," Harris Jr. said. "He grew up playing football in the same little league program all our guys played in. He's fast, he can run, he has all the physical tools. His best years are way ahead of him as a football player, because he's an athletic freak. We are just looking forward to continuing to develop him, and to make sure he's ready to perform and show up as a Miami caliber football player during the season."

Booker T. Washington's quarterback Treon Harris (6'0/182) is another rising senior that holds an offer from the ‘Canes. The standout athlete has already had a stellar high school career at the quarterback position, leading his team to a state championship during his junior season.

"Treon (Harris) is going into his third year as a starter, and to this point he's 24-3 as a starting quarterback in high school, playing in Dade county," Harris Jr. said. "He has a chance right now to kind of cement himself as probably one of the best quarterbacks to come through South Florida, if not the entire state of Florida."

As of right now, Harris holds a host of other scholarship offers, including the likes of Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Mississippi, Mississippi State, NC State, South Florida and Central Florida.

Harris plans to continue playing quarterback at the next level, but he has not completely shut the door on the possibility of playing a different position.

"Right now, the few schools he's really closing in on are all quarterback schools (offered Harris as a quarterback)," Harris Jr. said. "At this moment, it looks like he'll be making the decision to play quarterback in college. That could change, just because we understand the recruiting process is long-- If it wasn't at the quarterback position we felt that defensive back would be the next move he would make, not so much wide receiver."

Another player being recruited by Miami is running back Mark Walton (5'10/180), who will be a sophomore next season.

Current Team:

Seniors: Allen Hurns

Juniors: Phillip Dorsett, Rashawn Scott

Sophomores: Herb Waters, Malcolm Lewis

Freshmen: Jontavious Carter, D’Mauri Jones, Stacy Coley, Derrick Griffin (assuming he qualifies)

Miami actually doesn’t have much issue after this season. Allen Hurns is a nice WR and a dependable option but he’s the only one leaving and thus should be replaceable from within simply by having guys get more experience and grow into bigger roles.

Long term things get a little more hairy. Within two years the Canes will be losing at least 3 of their top 4 WRs. Couple that with the fact that D’Mauri Jones has reportedly not shown much to this point and that Derrick Griffin could easily outgrow the WR position if he qualifies and that leaves Miami in a tricky spot. I think it’s safe to assume that Lewis, Waters, and Coley will all be safely established as a top 3 core heading into the 2015 season and Carter (who has reportedly shown some flashes) would hopefully have grown enough to be another solid option. But that’s only 4 guys and not much in the way of depth. That makes the next couple of WR classes pretty important to Miami moving forward.

Numbers:

Miami currently has 9 WR’s which is a solid enough number. Anything around that 10 range is fine. Given that Miami is losing 3 WRs within the next couple seasons and that attrition is part of the norm these days, the coaches are likely looking at bringing in 3 or 4 bodies at the position this year in order to get ahead of the losses going forward and make it easier to reload from year to year instead of constantly having to throw kids to the wolves when they should be redshirting.

2014 Recruits:

Current Commitments: Darrell Langham (3*) Trayon Gray (3* ATH)

Current Targets: Ermon Lane (5*), Travis Rudolph (4*), Johnnie Dixon (4*), JoJo Robinson (3*), Ryeshene Bronson (4*), Braxton Barrios (4*)

As I did last installment, I tried to keep the options to a minimum and give just the main targets.

Starting at the top is the number 1 WR in the country, Ermon Lane out of Homestead. Potentially Miami’s number 1 overall target this class, he is the one truly blue chip player in this class and would step in the play from Day 1 for the Canes. Miami is battlng Bama (who has a slight lead) and UF (who is more of a darkhorse candidate) for his services.

Former Miami commitment Travis Rudolph was originally offered as a DB before decommmiting and naming Florida as his leader. He has since backed off that and now it seems that Miami is pushing pretty close to even with Florida for his services. Believe it or not, Rudolph is one of the more underrated players this class and luckily for Miami, he has ties to them through his star cousin, Former Cane great Devin Hester.

Johnnie Dixon would be the ultimate payoff for Miami after years of putting in work at Dwyer HS in West Palm. Dixon is undersized but explosive with the ball in his hands and would be a natural replacement to fill a role similar to Phillip Dorsett’s. It’s tough to see Miami turning down any of the above 3 talents no matter what and the hope is to be able to land a couple of them.

After the top 3 comes local favorite JoJo Robinson. He is currently committed to Florida State but with two other teammates committed to Miami and rumors swirling everywhere, it’s getting tougher and tougher to envision him not making the switch as well.

Braxton Barrios camped last week ad really pushed hard for an offer but unfortunately, it does not look like one is coming for the undersized slot WR. He is certainly an option that Miami will keep tabs on moving forward in case things don’t work out with their higher rated targets.

Ryeshene Bronson is further down the list but is an option to keep an eye on as Miami has recruited him throughout the cycle so far.

Grooms was never coming "back" to UM after being denied and AJL just didn't cut it. They are completely different from Locksley.

ACC changes effective 7/1/13:

UMike

SOUP..I can understand Grooms..but how is Locksley "completely different" from AJL? lol

UMike

My ONLY point is..if a kid doesn't qualify from the start..thee is no guarantee he ever will. And until he is officially at UM, he isn't a Cane or on the roster lol

I never GUARANTEED that he would be here but as of NOW that is the plan for next year so U have to count him until something ELSE happens and he doesn't get admitted.

I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt that he will be successful go to prep and eventually get into UM.

U on the oither hand don't even want to count him on the roster for next season and have already written him off as NEVER getting into UM.

And U wonder why people think U are negative?

NEW SOTU: Our position breakdown focuses on the running backs, and what things look like behind Duke. #Canes http://sbn.to/1b5tjH0

UMike

SOUP..when did i EVER say he would never get in??? lol...How can you "count him" or "count him on the roster" when he hasnt qualified yet? lol...I didnt say ONE negative thing. I just said he isnt guaranteed so there is no reason to count him in..because he isnt in lol

UMike

Ohio..you never been to Miami? Like that Indian guy on 40 Year Old Virgin "Dude..you got to get on that shyt" haha

UMike

I dont care if people THINK im negative..but you read every post about Lockley and there is not one negative comment there lol...You said they didnt include him on their list..and I simply said it was because he isnt guaranteed...i NEVER...NEVER said he was never going to get in

Ohio_Cane

UMike is more of a realist, 86 is an optimist. This is why U 2 clash. Lol

Umike, nope and I know! I was supposed to be there for the OSU game 2 years ago, but had a 1 month old that we didn't plan on having lol

UMike

I hear that Ohio..I did make it for that game..hung out with SOUP and a couple other spacers...ATL is only 2 hours from me so I go every other year with a friend of mine who is a GT fan. i was born and raised in Miami..so I got to go to the Orange Bowl and Dolphin stadium etc..besides my grandmother..Canes games are the only thing I miss lol

LB

"I was also told that Angelo Jean-Louis was going to prep school and would be a Cane..same with Kevin Grooms and many others lol"

Those dudes are down in my neck of the woods (Marshall). They don't last long. Maybe it's the water?
----------------
Out of Blue, Grace, and Tucker... who's the most game ready right now?

UpNorthCane27

LB... ima go with Jawand Blue because he's gone through 2 U tough seasons and has a season under his belt learning the defense and adjsuting to college play and speed. then after him i Would say Grace who might be closer to game ready then many fans even know. The kid just hasthe it factor when it coems to football. leaving tucker to be the least game ready right now.

SOUP

UMike...Not only did U say that Locksley would never get in but that Global warming is a hoax, that Tim Tebow was gonna be a great NFL QB, the Apocalypse will occur in 2015 and that the Florida Marlins were gonna win the Wiorld Series in 2013.

U don't remember sying all that? I have it on record. LOL

UMike

You never know with the Marlins haha

That's amazing considering the things high school coaches here were saying about UM in 2010. Must be the Golden Touch.

If the #Canes landed Dixon, paired with McDermott and Langham, they'd be getting three of Palm Beach County's top five 2014 prospects.

SOUP... There are low achievers and high achievers... low achievers set their goals low... and are happy when they achieve. High achievers set their goals high... and more often get disappointed. You are a high achiever!

Brad Kaaya just dropped a beautiful pass over the shoulder of Budda Baker (I believe) for a TD. Apocalypse rolling over the Field Generals.

#Miami commit Brad Kaaya off to a sizzling start at #TheOpening today. Big Cali qb is very smooth.

If he keeps this up, offensive recruits will take notice and want to play with him. Glad he's already committed.

Brevardcane

It be cool if he got his 5th star..

VA Cane

Great story about JB Soup. If he was alive, and RS would tell him stay away, or he saw guys from 2004 on dogging it.....WOW!!! That guy played like the Great Dale Earnhardt drove WFO!!!!! He was a champion indeed.

I like the idea of recruiting guys....go after the best but not based on stars. Base it on live games, film, camps....and feel you get from a kid in a 1 on 1 situation. We are getting to where we want to be. I am not saying NC in 2013....but we are building towards a strong future. I think AG and Co. are doing it right. Some feel and expected him to turn it around in 2 years....the man has had some obstacles. I do like what I see. Thanks for all the reports on scouting from all you cats in the know....awesome stuff, best place on the planet for Canes Info!!!

Very very hot humid here in VA....we are working in shorts and Ts....conditioning sweating so we can play 7 or 8 quarters if need be. Doing our basics...block tackle handoff catch throw STs D and O sets and plays that we will build on....hustle, work ethic attitude TEAMWORK. This team is going to be very very good....talent is deep. I am not telling them that though...Shhhhhhhhh its a secret!!!! VAC

elliott

VA Cane

Freaking love this kid!
