LANZAROTE, Canary Islands - Leading from wire-to-wire, the 2013 USA
U19 Women’s U19 World Championship Team (2-0) upended host Spain (0-2) 78-49 in
the 2013 Lanzarote International Invitational on Saturday night at the Teguise
Arena in Lanzarote, Canary Islands. Seven U.S. players chipped in no less than
six points apiece, led by Linnae Harper (Whitney Young H.S. / Chicago, Ill.) and
Bashaara Graves (Tennessee / Clarksville, Tenn.), who notched 15 and 10 points,
respectively.
The round-robin tournament concludes on
Sunday with the Americans going against Canada at 11:00 a.m. (6:00 a.m. EDT) and
the Australia-Spain contest tips at 1:00 p.m. (8:00 a.m.
EDT).
“I thought that was a great response by
our team to understand the level of effort that we have to give every night,”
said USA U19 and University of Miami head coach Katie Meier. “Spain had our
attention; they had our full attention. We expected a real emotional, passionate
performance by them and they started out that way. It was a great response by
our team.”
Coming out with more energy overall than
it did against Australia last night, the USA jumped out to an early lead it
would never relinquish. Graves got the U.S. on the board 17 seconds into the
game and by the 6:21 mark, with three more Americans contributing points, the
USA was up 10-2.
However, the red, white and blue had a
tough time adjusting to the international style of play and at 5:08 was whistled
for its fifth team foul. Being in the bonus resulted the host nation hitting
9-of-10 in the second half of the stanza to keep the game within single digits
and at the end of the period the USA led by nine, 23-14.
“I think Spain came out really hard and aggressive,” said Harper. “They saw us play last night and saw how we started. I think this game, the USA came out really hard. We wanted to prove ourselves and play better than we did yesterday, execute the things we needed to do and do the little things. Since we started from the beginning, playing hard and hustling, I think it made the game easier for us.”
However, following a jumper by Spain, the USA sent the hosts to the line for six tries in less than a two-minute span and the Europeans closed the gap to 34-22 at 5:39. That was as close as Spain would get for the remainder of the contest. Holding onto a 15-point, 45-30, advantage, the Americans got a long two from Kelsey Plum (La Jolla Country Day / Poway, Calif.) at the buzzer and headed to the locker room up 47-30.
“The key to the game was the early foul
trouble by our starters, which gave us significant minutes off of our bench,”
added Meier, whose squad had six players with two fouls apiece by halftime. “We
don’t really call it our bench; we call it our second wave, our reinforcements,
because they just reinforced what the starters did. They played with a
tremendous amount of poise and I was awfully pleased with
that.
“As coaches we were allowed to manage
minutes and we needed that. We’re trying to learn about the team. I was
disappointed about the early foul trouble, but I thought the response to the
early foul trouble was a real positive for the team.”

Behind an intense pressure defense, the 2013 USA U19 Women's U19 World Championship Team (3-0) sprinted to a 28-7 lead en route to a 69-49 defeat of Canada (1-2) to capture the 2013 Lanzarote International Invitational championship on Sunday morning at the Teguise Arena in Lanzarote, Canary Islands. Australia (2-1) defeated host Spain (0-3) 75-58 and finished second in the round-robin tournament as Canada nabbed third place.
Breanna Stewart (Connecticut / North Syracuse, N.Y.) led the way with 11 points, while Morgan Tuck (Connecticut / Bolingbrook, Ill.) scored 10 and Brianna Turner (Manvel H.S. / Pearland, Texas) also had 10 points to go with seven rebounds.
“The start of the game, our first quarter was just phenomenal, especially after that short (13-hour) turnaround," said USA U19 and University of Miami head coach Katie Meier. "It really showed maturity in our starters. But, our pressure wasn't consistent throughout the game. It came and went. We kind of pressured in spurts. We weren't as sharp mentally as we needed to be, but I was really happy to see the veterans set the tone early in this game."

Seeing as they were allegedly with Hernandez the night he shot two people in Gainesville it's not really a stretch. UF's "Greatest Class of All Time" has as many felons as Miami's had 1st round draft picks!
Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | July 14, 2013 at 01:20 PM
I will say it plainly I despise Urban Greasy Myer; he is a piece of shit. He may win, but at a cost. Screw Hernandez, and those idiot Ponceys...Hernandez will get it in THE END in prison, he will find out about tough and bad. I hope both of the Pounceys blow a knee out, and end up on skid row. They are complete jerks. The whole UF program is BS. Muschamp has a fat gut and a big mouth....no better than greasy. I hate OSU, Myer Florida....as much as I respect Tebow as a person, I do not see how he can be so blind to Greasy Myer....
U Mike your posts are great I really get a lot from them. Keep up the good work.
Its rained so much here in VA I think I am in Miami. I been sweating my guys, we are ready, and man are we loaded this year. These kids have worked so hard all summer on fundamentals....that's where I destroy other teams. They run triple reverse bubble screen don't hit don't get dirty Urban Myer garbage crap....we are sweating out up downs, bear crawls, practicing handoffs, sled work, reach blocks, using our hands, form tackling and blocking, getting in shape in shorts and shirts....etc. I KNOW and my kids KNOW they are talented but all the talent in the world cannot beat basic football and talent!!! One of our rivals came out to see us, said he was ready for us this year. I told him that was great. My main assistant was so pissed he wants to run the score up 100-0. I told him no way do I ever do that, cause that is not fair to those kids. I said we just dominate the lines of scrimmage and do the basics...win by knowing the game, not having an attitude.
My heart goes out to Trayvon Martins family. His parents were dignified and holy in their grief. I also think the political figures who stuck their mouths and noses in it cost the victims dearly; I feel the jury wanted to show the political talking heads they were not in charge...sad for the child and parents whom I feel for deeply. Yes, we'll that's just it. They've been implicated of at least being at the scene of attempted murder in Gainesville, by AHernandez. Their school is a laughingstock, and they're pro football players making millions, and they do something this stoooopid??? They must share one small brain between the both of them. My guess is that in ten years they'll be broke and unemployed.

I am not really sold on a cat named Johnny QB. Yes he had a nice year last year, played very well against Bama. Since then, his attitude is well disinterested in football, crying about pub, whining about having to take online classes, way too many other interests....not sold on the guy. Lets see him repeat. Personally, I think our boy SM is going to have a very good season. Maybe old Johnny football had too many cold ones and thought he could not compete with Morris.
I despise Myer so much; joke as a leader and person. He faked all that hear shit, hell he doesn't care about his kids what a BShitter. What lame answers to his days at UF. Same with Fatazz Muschump. I want to lay some wood to those pu**ies from UF....maybe they could have some uni pants that look like jorts....what a bunch of idiots. Hell we get people from all over at VT and you would not believe some of those idiots either...well maybe you would!!!!

Damn right he had to turn ND down......his kind of players don't have the brains to stay out of trouble how would they get in? Exceptions? Hey at least they have some standards...rather see them do well than UF or OSU. Hope Greasy Mole Face has some heart trouble the piece of shit!!!!!!

Think the bottom will fall out this year for Johny Football and A&M. Think Morris will be a better pro QB either way.
Not a Tebow fan, though not a religious person, I respect he stood by his own values. How much would his persona become if he steps in a TE for NE and does well in Hernandez's absence. media will have a feiled day.
Lisening to a rap song on the radio with my daughter. "All I do is win" I think it was called, anyways Snoop Dog references "like the The U in the 80s"

### While the NCAA case nears a conclusion, UM has yet another off-field issue to deal with. Jimmy Goins -- who purchased human growth hormone and other drugs from Anthony Bosch’s Biogenesis clinic, according to a Miami New Times report in January -- is suing UM for firing him as the baseball team’s strength and conditioning coach, asserting the university breached his contract by dismissing him “without following rules laid out in the UM employee handbook.”
UM filed a motion to dismiss the case on Friday, with UM attorney Eric Isicoff writing in the motion that Goins “does not point to a specific provision” in the UM handbook that UM “has allegedly breached.”
Goins, who was fired in March after more than nine years on the job, also is suing Biogenesis, New Times, The Miami Herald and The New York Times.
Goins’ attorney said in the suit that he went to Biogenesis with the belief the clinic “was properly licensed and that Bosch was a medical doctor – neither of which was true.”
Goins’ attorney said blood work determined Goins needed testosterone, and his Biogenesis treatment included HGH. He alleged the medical records published by New Times – and media reports in the other publications – led to his termination from UM.
### One tweak in UM’s offense from Jedd Fisch to James Coley: Expect, on occasion, more of a power running element, with guards pulling and extra tight ends. Al Golden is so appreciative of Coley using the terminology already in place with Fisch, so the players wouldn’t have to learn an entirely new system.... Please check the last post for more Hurricanes tidbits from Saturday.

Tito Doin Work...
Since it's the off-season, now would be a good time to debut a project I've been working on for a while. Here are some comparisons between Miami skill-position recruits and current NFL players based on skillset and physical gifts. This doesn't mean the recruits will turn out as good as these guys, but it is just a comparison of styles.
DT:
Travonte Valentine: Marcel Dareus
I like this comparison because both of these guys displays their atheltic ability as DT’s. The first thing that jumps at you when you see Valentine is his size. A legit 6’4 300 pounds with tremendous strength. Valentine also displays good technique and combines it with his strength is nearly unstoppable. Valentine like Dareus, could use more time on the field but once his conditioning can improve, this kid is going to be an absolute nightmare for any offensive linemen.
Valentine:6'4 310
Dareus: 6'4 280
Valentine Highlights:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STYcZzmsMGA
(Skip the two minute atrocity at the beginning of the video)
Dareus Highlights:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OCQdUGsP28
Dalvon Stuckey: Ryan Pickett
These guys are basic “Space Eaters”. All they do is draw double teams and take up large gaps directly in the hole and swallow running backs. When looking at Stuckey’s tape you notice he is a pure run stuffer, and not much of a pass rusher. Similar to Pickett, Stuckey isn’t much of a pass rusher due to only having a Bull-Rush technique.
Stuckey: 6'2 310
Pickett: 6'2 300
Stuckey Highlight:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axZFRKzj-E8
Courtel Jenkins: Brandon Mebane
After watching this guy’s tape I’m really beginning to believe that he can really contribute early here. Jenkins is a monster physically and is always involved in the runs plays up the middle. He finds a way by out working his blocker. He stands around 6-2 310, but uses that weight to stuff the run at every opportunity. Like Mebane, Jenkins relies mostly on his strength. Mebane was going to be the starter for the Seahawks DT spot this year until he hurt his calf.
Jenkins: 6'1 310
Mebane: 6'2 308
Jenkins Highlights:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHRNPyTEpbk
Khairi Clark: Jurell Casey
Size and aggresive play is what makes me believe these two are similar. They both play with a very high motor and make their names known in the opposing team’s backfield. However, like most would say ,Clark does have a lot of unnecessary weight that needs to be cut and Casey is using his cut weight to be more aggressive and attacking.
Clark:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Sv0AWvZ2_U
Casey:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDFNtXzoGAY

Here are some comparisons between Miami skill-position recruits and current NFL players based on skillset and physical gifts. This doesn't mean the recruits will turn out as good as these guys, but it is just a comparison of styles.
Today’s comparisons are for the receivers
Ermon Lane: Julio Jones
Lane and Jones have the rare ability to go up and get those fifty-fifty balls almost effortlessly. They both are good route runners with strong hands. Although Lane and Jones may not be the ones to catch a screen pass and take it down the field for 80, they can get deep.
Lane: 6’3 195
Jones: 6’4 215
Travis Rudolph: Reggie Wayne
Wayne has polished catching skills, as does Rudolph, and he can make difficult catches look easy. They both are very smooth and always in control. Rudolph brings the added threat of punt returning, as he is a threat to score with the ball in his hands.
Rudolph:6’0 189
Wayne: 6’ 198
Johnnie Dixon: Antonio Brown
Both guys are good route runners with big-play ability, but Dixon may even be more versatile with his ability to line up outside.
Dixon: 5’11 190
Brown: 5’10 175
Braxton Berrios- Wes Welker
This is an easy comparison, but it is the right one IMO. Everything about Berrios's game resembles Welker but with a little more explosiveness. Berrios ran a 4.48 at the same camp where Dixon and Lane ran 4.5+, and his quickness (like Welker's) makes him impossible to cover. Berrios showed at the Miami camp that he can adjust to bad passes and he also has surprising jumping ability, similar to Santana Moss.
Berrios: 5’10 175
Welker:5’9 185
Darrell Langham- Tommy Streeter
Langham has good speed and amazing size that he uses to catch the jump balls and deep balls. Like Streeter, his route running is very good for a big man and he catches the ball away from his body. One area I would really like to see Langham improve is drops; scouts have reported he seems to be able to catch the hard passes but drops the easier ones. If he want to live up to this comparison, he needs to be more consistent.
Langham 6’3 180
Streeter: 6’4 190

Ufomba *The African Nightmare* Kamalu update
-He's just waiting UM to accept him.
-He's fully cleared and waiting for his final grades and see if UM accepts him.
-He was wavering, but now he is 100% CANE!
-He's lifting 3-4 hours a day, running 1 1/2 hours a day.
-He talks to UM staff a lot and he's currently in GA.

He's a defensive tackle and Miami wants him. Even an inch of talent and heart and he's starting for a 5-time national champion on the way back to top 15 prominence. Oh, and a top 40 school.
No matter how bad D'Onofrio and the d-line have been, you'd have to be mad not to jump at that chance.
