Miami Hurricanes senior QB Stephen
Morris and sophomore RB Duke Johnson have been named to the watch list for the
77th annual Maxwell Award, announced Monday by the Maxwell Football
Club.
The Maxwell
Award, named in honor of Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell, has been given to America’s
College Player of the Year since 1937. Maxwell’s contributions to the game of
football were extensive, including as a player, sportswriter and official.
Three Miami
Hurricanes have previously won the Maxwell Award – Vinny Testaverde (1986), Gino
Torretta (1991) and Ken Dorsey (2001). Miami’s three Maxwell Award winners are
tied for the sixth-most among NCAA teams.
Morris started
all 12 games under center a season ago, throwing for a career-best 3,345 yards
and 21 touchdowns. His 3,345 passing yards in 2012 were the fifth-most in
program history, while his 3,415 yards of total offense set a new single-season
mark at Miami. He also became the first QB in Miami Hurricanes history to post
multiple 400-yard passing games in a single season.
Last week,
Johnson was named to the watch list for the 2013 Paul Hornung Award, which is
given to the most versatile player in college football. The Miami product enjoyed one of the greatest freshman
seasons in Hurricanes history in 2012, amassing 2,060 all-purpose yards and 13
TDs, while breaking Clinton Portis’ 13-year-old school freshman rushing record
with 947 yards. His 892 kick return yards were a single-season record, while
also tying the school single-season mark with two kick returns for
touchdowns.
Semifinalists for
the Maxwell Award will be announced Oct. 29, while the three finalists will be
unveiled Nov. 18. The 2013 Maxwell Award winner will be announced Dec. 12 as
part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show. The formal
presentation will be made March 7, 2014, at the Maxwell Football Club Awards
Gala hosted by Harrah’s Entertainment Atlantic City.
The watch list
candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club’s selection committee,
which analyzes both past performance and future potential. The Club reserves the
right to make additions and deletions to the list as the 2013 season unfolds.
All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA sports information directors, FBS
head coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for the
awards.

I don't blame Shannon AT ALL! for what Golden "inherited", I blame the lazy ass people at the top, for not doing their OWN! due diligence, and hiring a better coach.
REMEMBER!, it wasn't the Prez or the AD that targeted and hired Shannon, it was the University that hired an outside firm (head-hunter) to target and hire Shannon. An outside firm that didn't know $hit! about football <------- In my Roger Mayweather voice.
Now think about that for a second...the University HIRED SOMEBODY, to HIRE SOMEBODY, who they ended up FIRING! And what's worse, it was an in-house hiring, so the headhunter didn't have far to go LMAO!
We spent 50 grand FOR THAT!
Posted by: CaneRock | July 09, 2013 at 01:14 PM
CaneRock..actually, the firm picked a few others, but like Golden I think RS was the third choice..but I get your point..your going to hire a firm to look for someone? Like that firms understands the U, or the Miami area etc etc..craziness lol

Virginia Tech running back Michael Holmes has been dismissed from the team and the school, according to a school spokesman.
Holmes was kicked out of school by a panel of his peers on the university’s student judiciary committee -- not the athletic department -- after he was found guilty of a reduced misdemeanor charge of assault and battery. Holmes was originally facing a felony malicious wounding charge for his alleged involvement in a fight in April. Because the felony was reduced to a misdemeanor charge, Holmes could have been reinstated by athletic director Jim Weaver, as long as he was cleared by the university. The student judiciary panel, though, is of a higher authority than the school’s athletic director.

Posted by: UMike | July 09, 2013 at 01:18 PM
EXACTLY!
If that firm understood Miami's past successes, it would know that the HCs of those teams went against the grain of what the City Of Miami was about.
Schnellenberger was an Alabama guy.
JJ was a West Texas guy, who played for Bud Wilkinson at OU.
Erickson was a yuppy from the West Coast.
Davis, who was a JJ disciple, was an Oklahoma guy.
Coker, who was a Davis disciple, was an Oklahoma guy.
Shannon, as we all know, was born and raised in Miami. Maybe familiarity does breed contempt.

But as far as Shannon's failures as a HC, His biggest one was with the media. If Shannon had a better relationship with the media, then that would've covered His shortcomings as a HC for at least another year. Which is what AG is good at...using the media to cover His shortcomings.
Posted by: CaneRock | July 09, 2013 at 01:40 PM
^^^^^^^^^^IOWs, when the media turns on you, IT'S A WRAP!

Fair enough, Soupers. I'll call off the artillery.
Posted by: LB | July 09, 2013 at 01:47 PM
But looking at the aforementioned coaches, even though they came from different cultures, they embraced the Miami culture.
And that's why I think AG will succeed...He embraces the Miami culture.

Agree with this, CaneRock. The other major shortcoming Shannon had was his inability to pick good assistant coaches. The ones he picked had no loyalty to him, ignored his warnings on Shapiro, didn't outwork anyone, etc.
Posted by: j.w. | July 09, 2013 at 02:00 PM
I like Al Golden but if any of u honestly think Hocutt had Miami's best interest in hand when hiring Golden is definitely walking around with blinders on! Case-n-point, if Hocutt had so much faith in the G-Child then why didn't he ever reach out & offer Golden the Texas tech job after Tubbs left? Dude had 1 thing on his to-do list b4 he bolted 2 Texas...Fire that N@#$a Randy Shannon, and replace him with whoever!!!!

J.w, let's not 4get Shannon tried to hire BOTH Kevin Sumlin, Dirk Cutter & Charlie Strong but the administration refused to shell out the cash. Shannon also tried to put his foot in Shapiro's ass but was COMMANDED by BOTH Hocutt & Shalala to leave the snake be & let him have his fun. Shannon was never seen accepting a check from Ratboy.

Coastal Opponents (6-4)
Ga. Tech: 2-0
Va. Tech: 1-1
Duke: 2-0
N. Carolina: 1-1

Not giving the funds to Shannon to hire better coordinators is a real indictement on UM leadership during his tenure. Hopefully they now realize that a top level BCS program cannot be maintained on the cheap.
One fault I did have with Shannon was a lack of emotion. It bled out into his players as time went on. If you are stoic when you are up 20, or down 20 why should we be surprised if some players stopped caring, or behaved like automatons.

So the "sources" said, 4-real. But Koetter got an NFL job, while Sumlin and Strong might very well have known their path to a head coaching opportunity was stronger by staying where they were. I'll grant you the admin. screwed up royally with Shapiro. As for Hocutt at Texas Tech, we have no idea if Kirby did try to hire Golden at Tech, whether Golden politely refused, whether Hocutt realized that Golden was probably not a great fit at an outpost like Lubbock, Tx given his New Jersey roots, etc.
Posted by: j.w. | July 09, 2013 at 02:40 PM
What does that mean?
Golden showed significant improvement from year 1 to 2 despite heavy losses due to graduation, suspension, transfer, and injury. He also improved despite playing 3 BCS teams (vs. 1 in 2011).
UM is very quickly learning how to beat conference opponents (UVA will get fixed this year, and FSU is next).
But UM needs to do a few things in order to be considered "back:"
1. Outright win the Coastal.
- Though this would have happened last year, NC had the better record and beat UM. There's no excuse for this team not to sweep the six in front of them. Prediction: 2013.
2. Win a bowl game.
- I can't stress how important this is to momentum and team morale. It propels a team in the rankings and absolutely assists in recruiting. It also hasn't happened since 2006. If it's a non-BCS bowl game, it must happen this year. Prediction: 2013.
3. Win the ACC. Honestly, it's without question the worst of the major BCS conferences and is absolutely winnable. Nobody sucks like the ACC in BCS games (their recent only wins coming against N. Illinois & Cincinnati). Can it happen in 2013? It all depends on how far the defense progresses. Prediction: Tossup.
4. Consistently beat ranked teams. Al Golden is 1-6 vs. postseason ranked teams, and this is something that has got to get fixed NOW. This can be partially attributed to suspensions, injuries, and a terrible defense. UM has the benefit of an easy schedule (they play only 2 BCS teams). But they've got to at least beat a major ranked opponent to be taken seriously on a national level.
5. Win the Orange Bowl.

I think FAU, Savannah State, Wake Forest, USF, Virginia, Pittsburgh, Duke, are automatic wins. I think we should beat Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, and Floriduh. The two games I think we can lose is FSwho and UNC. Go Canes.

OFF TOPIC JOKE:
One day Little Johnny's mom was cleaning his room. In the closet, she found a bondage S+M magazine. This was highly upsetting to her. She hid the magazine until his father got home. When Little Johnny's father walked in the door, she irately handed the magazine to him, and said:
"This is what I found in your son's closet." He looked at it and handed it back to her without a word. Several minutes passed, then she finally asked him, "Well what should we do about this?"
Little Johnny's dad looked at her and said:
Well I don't think you should spank him.

I'm a Golden supporter, but I'm not blind, either.
Golden is learning on the job and he has done some good things but there are some red flags as well.
As long as LB is parsing statistics, chew on this: a combined 1-4 against BC, Maryland, and Virginia is a big red flag.
Like I said, I fully support the coaches, but they have a ways to go before I will be confident they're the final answer. WE CAN NO LONGER LOSE TO THESE TYPE OF TEAMS in year three and going forward.

Well we can’t look at just half the story here. Yes AG has gone 1-4 against BC, Maryland and Virginia, but also within that time span he posted a 4 – 2 against GT, VT, and NC
(2 – 0 against GT), 1 – 1 against VT, and 1 – 1 against North Carolina
I agree we can't lose to those other teams, but looking at the full picture we are a better team. Just need to play up to our game, EVERY game (which comes with maturity which is what we have this year)
Not giving out passes, but we are a better team from the first to the second year and let’s sit and wait for 2013!
