I will say this...no matter who we do end up with or dont end up with..the staff has put in major work this recruiting cycle

Posted by: UMike | July 09, 2013 at 06:37 AM

////////////

Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely encouraged by what Golden & co. have been doing, but putting in major work is what they're supposed to be doing. To have ANY hope of succeeding, extraordinary work should be the minimum standard, each and every day.

Even with all the NCAA BS, coach Golden has been handed the keys to a Lamborghini. I love all the hype, but it means NOTHING until he translates into on field success.

The days of making excuses are over. It's time to put up. The only strike I see is on defense. The excuse we have trouble recruiting there will no longer be valid. We sure haven't had a problem recruiting an offense full of studs, have we?

I love everything coach has done, but now I MUST see big results over the next two years. NO EXCUSES.

LB

"Even with all the NCAA BS, coach Golden has been handed the keys to a Lamborghini."

Please remember Randy Shannon traded in the Lamborghini for a bicycle. This program was skyrocketing towards FBS levels.

"I love all the hype, but it means NOTHING until he translates into on field success."

Agreed. Yet if not for suspensions and a bad defense, he would have had a nine win team LAST YEAR.

"The excuse we have trouble recruiting there will no longer be valid. We sure haven't had a problem recruiting an offense full of studs, have we?"

I don't see any issues in recruiting at all.

"I love everything coach has done, but now I MUST see big results over the next two years. NO EXCUSES."

I'm with you. There's no excuse not to win 9 games and outright claim the Coastal. Zero. And losing a non-BCS bowl game is an absolute failure. This team hasn't won a bowl game since 2006 (a one point win vs. the mighty Nevada Wolfpack).

UMike

Canefan..I didnt mean to imply that the staff doest do work every year, it just SEEMS they were a little late on some guys last year, but even last year they went hard after all those top local guys, they just decided to go elsewhere. I do agree its time to show it on the field..I just hope that Golden has the guts to fire D-No if there is no improvement. That is the ONLY area that concerns me with Golden.

UMike

if you look at the guys we "lost", we were in it to the very end and in a couple cases were told players were silents. Kirkland, Collins, Thomas etc...But the staff learned a lot from last year it seems. They are hitting south florida hard and early

LB

I repeat: we were on way to becoming Kent State and Eastern Michigan before Al Golden.

-------
"I just hope that Golden has the guts to fire D-No if there is no improvement. That is the ONLY area that concerns me with Golden."

I had that concern, too. Had. Past tense.

LB

"if you look at the guys we "lost", we were in it to the very end and in a couple cases were told players were silents. Kirkland, Collins, Thomas etc...But the staff learned a lot from last year it seems. They are hitting south florida hard and early"

Eff 'em.

Seriously.

I'd rather take somebody like Corn Elder who's dying to have an opportunity here than a primadonna who'd rather play for a deflating program like USC.

LB

Speaking of the beloved USC, those motherscratchers play seven teams with winning records this year. They also lost their QB.

Ouch. Way to have a bad break in a conference with Stanford, Oregon, and rapidly improving teams (UCLA, Washington, Arizona).

Kiffin is done.

But it's okay... because they have a team full of five stars. :)

LB

Meanwhile, UM plays FOUR teams with winning records (Va. Tech, Florida, FSU, North Carolina).

How about that?

Ohio_Cane

While I agree we will have some EE's, Berrios is NOT a current commit.

Posted by: UMike | July 09, 2013 at 06:04 AM
--------------------------------------

Lol, no kidding. I was including him and Kaaya into the other 2-3 or so that I believe we have already committed.

In my eyes, Berrios is a Cane until he decides to go somewhere else. He's one I'll consider myself "shocked" if he goes elsewhere.

Canesfan_1

Mike - no problem with what you said at all.

Even with what Golden was handed, the analogy still remains, LB. I don't apologize for what we have, it was a Lamborghini that needed work, but it's still a stud car.

My major criticism is that we've been a little lenient accepting the defensive excuses. Again we have an offense full of studs. We have not done as well on defense, both on the field and in recruiting, and that falls on this staff, not the last one. Golden's into his third year, now. I'm letting the past go, but I'm expecting results in the future.

LB

Oh, and before anyone starts lauding Va. Tech...

- The current three game winning streak they're on? Boston College, Virginia, and Rutgers. Two of those games were overtime wins.

- A gutted offensive staff.

- A program without a big win since 2010.

The time is now to grab this sucky conference by the nads and SQUEEZE.

Ohio_Cane

Here's ESPN talking about Golden and this recruiting class:

UMike

Canesfan...I'm going to disagree with you about one thing. No way was Golden handed the keys to a Lamborghini lol

Ohio_Cane

I don't apologize for what we have, it was a Lamborghini that needed work, but it's still a stud car.

Posted by: Canesfan_1 | July 09, 2013 at 09:14 AM
-------------------------------------------------

Golden was handed a Lamborghini? Maybe one that'd been wrecked 5 times and then left out in the rain with the windows down and the doors up for a year or two...

When he got here in December/January of 2010(?), we had 2 commits. TWO. It's July and we have 20 with a couple real close to committing.

Canesfan_1

I disagree with you - back at you.

The []_[] is always a Lamborghini. It may have needed a little body work, an overhaul, and a tune up, but it's still a beaut.

I'm never ashamed of dis []_[]. I'm a soldier.

UMike

Canesfan..I understand in our minds as fans the U will always be a "Lamborghini"..but in reality we have been far from a sports car for about 7 years now lol....Golden did get a job in a top University in a recruiting hotbed..BUT..that recruiting hotbed was corrupted by RS and neglected by Coker. The majority of the players he inherited were lazy and out of shape thanks to Shannons favoritism. Oh..and that whole NCAA thing lol

LB

"Even with what Golden was handed, the analogy still remains, LB. I don't apologize for what we have, it was a Lamborghini that needed work, but it's still a stud car."

Not when Randy Shannon was coaching. Not at all.

Shannon's record? 28-23. Bowl record? 0-2 vs. a bad California team and a transitioning Notre Dame.

His record vs. the ACC opponents that matter (FSU, Va. Tech, Ga. Tech, North Carolina)? 4-8. He didn't have a winning record vs. any of them.

He never won more than three games in a row. He ended every year with a loss. Three of those years were on losing streaks of three games or more (one year four).

Golden, however?

In two years rebuilding Shannon's mess and with hordes of issues (injuries, suspensions, the NCAA, a partridge and a pear tree)?

He had a three game losing streak, but was preceded by a three game winning streak. The same year, last year, he had a two game winning streak to end the year. This with probably one of the worst defense in football, if not in UM history. Oh, and he also faced THREE teams that appeared in BCS games(FSU, Notre Dame, Kansas State).

Now he's got a good team with an excellent schedule. Al Golden hasn't had an opportunity to go to a bowl game.

This is the year where we find out how well he can do.

If this team fails to:
- Win the coastal
- Win 8 games
- Lose a non-BCS bowl game

I'm with you. But I don't think these things will happen. There's too much talent on a team with a senior QB.

Ohio_Cane

----------------------------------------

No doubt. The base is there. The engine is ready to haul a$$. Granted U can make the argument a Lamborghini is a Lamborghini regardless of it's condition, but this one was in a junk yard, not a show-room floor.

Freakin' THIS.

Anything less than those this year is failure.

Florida Atlantic
Savannah State
South Florida

North Carolina
Wake Forest
Duke
Virgina
Pitt

SHOULD all be wins, even if our D is only a little improved. We should win at LEAST one out of..

Florida
FSU
VT

No excuses AT ALL to not win 8 games or more, even with last years D

Canesfan_1

Sorry guys. With our schedule, wining only 8 games is SEVERE UNDERPERFORMANCE. Get out of here with that mess. 9 wins is barely acceptable. 10 wins is what I expect.

Also, I was no Shannon fan, but lets stop with using that as an excuse. I'll buy it for years one and two, but not year 3. This is is Golden's deal now. No more excuses. 8 wins? Which is just one more than last year? That's a joke.

10 wins or bust. Lets not be coddling this staff, either. Perform or else.

trianglecane

UNC and Pitt are shakey to me. Not because we can't win, but we have been inconsistent for 9 years. I would switch VT and UNC. UNC will be a black out game on thursday and it should be fun.

Here we go with the Shannon Killers hey Guess what SmartyPantses....IT IS WELL KNOWN THE CANES QUIT ON SHANNON NOT VICE VERSA..
Are U Guys Blind or Dumb...Stop Blaming a man who is the ONLY name to remain clean and NOT have to answer anything at all about Nevin Shapiro...Stop Blamiing the man that made the kids go to class because before Shannon we WERE NOT the tops in Graduating kids and giving them MORE than football...Stop blaming the man that said he is NOT allowing his kids to take checks from Nevin and Punished them if he found they did..U guys are jaded I swear always wanna finger point at the wrong ppl...

A 7 win team with the #22 overall defense might not be a Lamborghini but it SURE IS HELL WASN'T A DODGE NEON EITHER!!!

"A late run at Sony Michel is not completely out of the question, but it is extremely unlikely that materializes into anything."

I agree with this, have for a while now.

BUT, we have our sites on more than Just Dalvin Cook to go with Yearby. As more time goes by and IF it looks more and more like Cook will stick with UF, then UM will move on to another of the many RB recruits to pair up with Yearby next year.

I don't have specific names but will research it to find out. If somebody knows what other RBs we have offered that would help.

and how HORRIBLE was our offense under Shannon was that his fault too????

Can I get an AMEN from the congregation?

UMike

For the record I was not blaming RS for our situation right now..I was talking about some of the mess he left Golden. I applaud Shannon for a lot of stuff. He got the kids in class and the arrest were down etc, but he made bad hires and hurt a lot of relationships with local coaches/schools. Also, IF the players quit on RS, there was a reason. If the players quit that is on Shannon. RS is a Cane and did some good, but he doesnt get a pass and he at least deserves SOME of the blame for the last couple years.

SOUP

It looks to be a very good team. Barring injury to Morris, there's no excuse for an ACC title game appearance. None.

Clearly U can't handle the truth, so why bother with facts? When it comes to Shannon U have blinders on and U can't see anything clearly even with the facts staring you right in the face.

But let's end the Shannon talk here and now. Those days are over. This is Golden's team and as Canesfan_1 has said our CURRENT coach and HIS players have to win and win BIG over the next two years and then beyond.

NO EXCUSES.

UpNorthCane27

Im in that small pool of believers that we are going 12-0 with a big BCS bowl win!!!!

Canes allday everyday!!!

UMike

UpNorth..i do not think 12-0 is beyond reach. With Duke full time at RB and Morris we can score with anyone on our schedule. If our D improves and a few things go our way, we could be 12-0. FSU is breaking in a new QB and coordinator and is always overrated. VT is down some at the moment and Florida is at home. So yea..it could happen lol

CoCane

FAU, Savanna St, USF, Wake, Duke, Virginia & Ga Tech SHOULD be 7 automic wins... Florida, @FSU & VT will be the most losable games... @UNC & @PITT are the wildcard games. Games we should win but we'll lose if we play sub par or dont bring it... I say 9-3 or 10-2.

UpNorthCane27

UMike im telling you man its going to happen this year we are gonna be the greatest show on grass. Highpowered offense with a crazy running game to go with it. Our Defense will shock the nation

UMike

I honestly cant remember the last time our D was good..2004 maybe?

LB

"Are U Guys Blind or Dumb...Stop Blaming a man who is the ONLY name to remain clean and NOT have to answer anything at all about Nevin Shapiro...Stop Blamiing the man that made the kids go to class because before Shannon we WERE NOT the tops in Graduating kids and giving them MORE than football...Stop blaming the man that said he is NOT allowing his kids to take checks from Nevin and Punished them if he found they did..U guys are jaded I swear always wanna finger point at the wrong ppl..."

Try again.

----------
Honestly, our defense doesn't have to improve that much to have an outstanding year. I'd consider double digits wins in that vein.

j.w.

He wad handed the keys to a rusted Alfa Romeo with 300k miles on it, a broken door handle and a cracked windshield. The fact he kept that fractured, flawed team together for 2 years when they had no depth, selfish leadership with very few exceptions and no recruits in year 1 is frankly amazing.

LB

"I honestly cant remember the last time our D was good..2004 maybe?"

Actually, 2006.

Here's a look at points allowed from 2004-since:

Coker
2004: 17 (1 shutout, 4 games allowed 24+ pts.)
2005: 14.25 (0 shutouts, 2 games allowed 24+ pts.)
2006: 15.08 (1 shutout, 2 games allowed 24+ pts.)

Shannon
2007: 26 (0 shutouts, 6 games allowed 24+ pts.)
2008: 24 (0 shutouts, 7 games allowed 24+ pts.)
2009: 20.33 (0 shutouts, 4 games allowed 24+ pts.)
2010: 19.67 (1 shutout, 5 games allowed 24+ pts.)

Golden
2011: 20.08 (0 shutouts, 6 games allowed 24+ pts.)
2012: 27.08 (0 shutouts, 7 games allowed 24+ pts.)

UpNorthCane27

Plain and simple people.....

WIN THE TURNOVERS MATCH AND UM WINS AND GOES 12-0!!!!

LB

Golden's numbers are most comparable to 2007 & 2008, when Shannon first took charge.

Defensive leaders (top three tacklers):
2007
T. Gooden (100 tackles, 1 Int), C. McCarthy (68 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 Int), C. Campbell (50 tackles, 6 sacks, 1 Int)

2008
G. Cook (76 tackles, 1 sack), D. Sharpton (58 tackles, 2 sacks), R. Davis (31 tackles)

2011
S. Spence (106 tackles, 3 sacks), D. Perryman (69 tackles, 1 sack), J. Nicolas (66 tackles, 2 Int)

2012
S. Green (67 tackles), D. Perryman (64 tackles, 1 Int), G. Paul (61 tackles)

SOUP

Miami Hurricanes junior center Shane McDermott is one of 44 players named to the 2013 Rimington Trophy Watch List, released Tuesday by the trophy’s selection committee. The award is presented annually to the nation’s top collegiate center in NCAA Division I FBS.

McDermott is one of five ACC centers on the list, joined by Russell Bodine (North Carolina), Jay Finch (Georgia Tech), Macky MacPherson (Syracuse) and Bryan Stork (Florida State).

An All-ACC honorable mention selection in 2012 by the league coaches, McDermott started all 12 games at center for the Hurricanes. He anchored the offensive line that paved the way for the ACC’s third-best passing offense (295.4) and fifth-best total offense (440.2). As a redshirt freshman in 2011, he saw action in 10 games, allowing no sacks and registering zero penalties on the season.

The Lake Worth, Fla., native was awarded the Walter Kichefski Endowed Football Scholarship at the 2013 UM Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and he will graduate this summer with his bachelor’s degree.

Miami’s Brett Romberg won the Rimington Trophy in 2002 after contributing the Miami’s 34-game winning streak from 2000-2002. He never allowed a sack at center and led an offensive line that helped produce three 1,000-yard rushers – James Jackson, Clinton Portis and Willis McGahee.

SOUP

Some REALLY good blogging today peeps.

Especially LB and UMike doin work!

LB

Onto 2013, and our opponents offensively (Savannah St. doesn't count):

FIU 20.5, 107th
Florida 26.5, 78th
USF 20.6, 106th
Ga. Tech 33.6, 34th
North Carolina 40.6, 8th
Wake Forest 18.5, 116th
FSU 39.3, 10th
Va. Tech 25.1, 83rd
Duke 31.5, 44th
Virginia 22.8, 95th
Pittsburgh 26.6, 76th

How it really looks: we play opponents who score around 27.8 pts. a game, and average around 68th for offense.

Here's where it gets good:

We play the 76th, 78th, 83rd, 95th, 106th, 107th, and 116th ranked offenses. Again, I'm not including Savannah.

The others?
D'Onofrio's defenses have been historically quite good against Ga. Tech.

North Carolina lost their nasty little tailback.

FSU is going through QB transition.

The other team? Duke. All they did was lose their QB & top receiver.

---------------------

That's why anything less than 8 wins and an ACC title appearance is an absolute failutre.
