The University of Miami unveiled the official logo of the 1983 National Championship team’s 30-year reunion, to be held Aug. 30 during the football regular season opener against Florida Atlantic at Sun Life Stadium.
“1983 was the linchpin that put into place the wonderful talent that was assembled and would continue to create the greatest college football dynasty since World War II,” former Miami Hurricanes head coach Howard Schnellenberger said. “I was thrilled when I learned the University was going to move up the next scheduled reunion so that I and many others could participate and enjoy.”
The logo, a brainchild of Miami Hurricanes graphic designer Leo Ramos, includes both subtle and stout references to the historical significance of the team’s accomplishments.
“It was an honor to even be asked to design it,” Ramos said. “I put an immense amount of pressure on myself to make sure it was done right and highlight the team that basically started it all. I had to try and dim down my fanhood and really try to honor them as they deserved to be.”
Among the multiple historical references embedded in the logo: a bowl of oranges commemorating the 50th Orange Bowl Classic, the markings of a football on the bowl, a “1” to signify the program’s first national championship, as well as the tagline “The Dynasty Begins” located on the base of the logo.
“Whenever I’m designing, I always like to insert subliminal hints towards history,” Ramos said. “I want it to be significant. Looking great is almost an afterthought. I want to make sure it served a purpose. I want it to highlight the idea of foundation.”
Ramos put in plenty of personal research before he began designing. “I went as far as to re-watch a few of the team’s games from that season,” he said. “I wanted to really get the attitude of the team, capture all of the poetic romance, and try to visually describe all of it.”
More than 65 players and coaches from the 1983 team are planning to attend, with more names being added to the growing list daily.
“The University and athletic department are excited about the opportunity to bring back the 1983 National Champions,” said Director of Alumni Programs Rick Remmert. “They represent the best of who we are. You can’t win your second national championship until you’ve won your first. They did it with incredible style, fashion and performance, and they certainly are deserving and worthy of this recognition.”

No. 3. Duke Johnson, RB, Miami
Previous ranking: No. 11
Making the case for Johnson: He had what was arguably the greatest freshman season in school history. Still need more? Johnson, who was named the ACC’s overall and offensive Rookie of the Year in 2012, was one of the ACC’s most electric kick returners, and he set the school single-season record with 892 kick return yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a freshman-record 947 yards and 10 touchdowns. His 2,060 all-purpose yards were the second-most in program history.
Johnson played in all 12 games last year and made five starts. He also had six games with 200-plus all-purpose yards and four 100-yard rushing games. He was named the ACC’s Rookie of the Week a league-best five-times. It’s possible Johnson could be even better this fall, as all five starters return on the offensive line, and the Canes have one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Stephen Morris.

JW- I really like the home schedule. Getting Duke, FSU, Syracuse, Notre Dame and BC at the BUC is a really good thing.
Boston College is bound to surprise some people. Really young team last season, and Hanlan was a freak.

Just saw this in (Wo)Mandel's mailbag, all I can say is, well, let's let him take it instead;
" I have a question about another "smart" school: Georgia Tech. Considering its history and location, Tech is a school that could (arguably should) thrive like Vandy or Stanford. But the Jackets seem to be stuck, at best, competing for the ACC Coastal division title. What's holding Georgia Tech back?
--Vince, Washington D.C.
It seems to me the Jackets were humming along just fine until Al Groh showed up on the scene. Paul Johnson's program was coming off an 11-win season, ACC title and Orange Bowl berth when the recently fired Virginia coach became its defensive coordinator. It proceeded to go 16-16 with a 2-4 start last year, until Johnson dismissed Groh in early October; Tech went 5-3 the rest of the way, won its division (albeit by default) and limited USC to seven points in the Sun Bowl.
OK, that's a bit harsh and simplistic, but Georgia Tech is not exactly a program in disarray. In fact, they're my dark horse to win the ACC this season. (Anyone besides Clemson or Florida State is a dark horse this year.) Quarterback Vad Lee is by far the best passer Johnson has had to run his option-based offense, which should make the Jackets tough to defend. Former Auburn and Penn State coordinator and Tech alum Ted Roof was an excellent choice as defensive coordinator. That unit showed improvement late last season and has some nice pieces to stop the pass. Academic requirements are not the same hurdle at Georgia Tech that they are at the schools I profiled. Like most ACC programs, Tech gets "special admits." However, due to its location, Tech is recruiting head-to-head with nearly the entire SEC. Johnson is not considered a particularly good recruiter, and the triple-option is often a tough sell. But Tech did greatly enhance its recruiting department this offseason, which could prove beneficial."
Entire playbook this year, just remember that.

"Tough", because it's hard not to get kids to laugh at you, when you tell em' you're gonna be the feature back in that souped up Wishbone offense.

Don't care where they went to school and if they went to UM they definitely need to have the light shined on them so they can be exposed for the proverbial cockroaches they really are.

Looks like we'll find out sooner rather than later whether any UM players were involved...

This thing is about to get really ugly now that the FED has convened a Grand Jury.

Deep down i tink it will be a 60/40 Canes to Crocs fan ratio. I forgot there is a million Croc fans in Dade County. Thats why the Fins cater to them. Oh well August 30th and September 7th cant get here soon enough. Go Canes!

This design is incredible! You certainly know how to keep a reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost...HaHa!) Excellent job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
