Leonard Fournette the No. 1 recruit in the country appears to have reversed course as his father confirmed Michigan, Alabama, LSU, USC and Miami would receive his five official visits.

I was reading an article last night, I think Matt Porter posted the link, and the article was wondering if the NCAA was purposly withholding their announcement as a "counter punch" to Donna calling them out.

BUT, what I found more interesting in this article is that the 6-8 week period is basically a made up time frame by the media. The NCAA's website actually says 10-12 weeks, but other schools have waited up to 4 months. So there is a good chance we may night hear until the middle of the season.

It’s not unheard of that the NCAA would make Miami or any school twist in the wind for what seems like forever while waiting on the results of a Committee on Infractions hearing.

Given the circumstances, however, with the Hurricanes’ season-opening game against Florida Atlantic just one week from Friday night, the delay seems unnecessarily tortuous and possibly deliberate.

Friday marks exactly 10 weeks since Miami President Donna Shalala and other school officials completed their hearing before the infractions committee in the Nevin Shapiro booster-gone-wild case.

Enough already with the manufactured drama.

If a bowl ban or worse is coming, then spill it. Knowing that the spread and the scope of this investigation have finally reached the limits of toxicity will come as a relief to coach Al Golden, no matter what the NCAA’s final sanctions letter has to say.

Look at the timing, however, and ask yourself if a bonus swipe at Miami is being worked into the schedule.

The NCAA could, say, hand down a 2013 postseason ban next week, mere days or even hours prior to the Hurricanes’ opening game against the Owls. Or, for greater impact, Miami could be forced to take its medicine on the week of the Sept. 7 Florida game.

While it’s true that these infrequent meetings with the Gators exist in a motivational universe of their own, the Hurricanes clearly don’t need that kind of emotional backwash.

Staying within the NCAA’s rules, of course, would have prevented all of these problems for the Hurricanes. Shapiro, a convicted Ponzi schemer, served up an unbelievably lurid menu of alleged major violations involving former Miami players and coaches.

February’s admission of “a very serious issue of improper conduct” on the part of NCAA investigators is what changed the game, however. Shalala, sensing a rare opportunity, fired back at the NCAA for being “unethical and unprofessional” and requested, without success, that the case be dropped altogether.

Given the secrecy of the process, every day that passes now without the announcement of sanctions could reasonably be perceived as a counterpunch delivered by the NCAA.

How long should it take for the Committee on Infractions to agree on a list of punishments and then get it all typed up and released in the appropriately cloudy legalese? The Associated Press has consistently listed six-to-eight weeks as the average wait time for a decision, and that range is also suggested on a University of Miami website devoted to the investigation.

The NCAA, on the other hand, writes on its own website that “it typically takes from eight to 12 weeks to write the report and announce penalties.” By that count, Miami is in the middle of the expected range at 10 weeks and counting.

Naturally, there’s always some leeway in the middle of the limbo. Priorities can be changed. Paperwork can be rushed or shuffled.

Ohio State went before the Committee of Infractions in August of 2011 for improper-benefits violations. The sanctions, including a one-year bowl ban, were released in December, more than four months later, but the Buckeyes were allowed to play in the Jan. 2 Gator Bowl all the same. In this case, the postseason ban was applied to 2012, when a 12-0 Ohio State team was frozen out of the national title chase.

North Carolina also waited more than four months for sanctions in 2012, but with the benefit of getting smacked after national signing day for high school recruits had already passed. Oregon, on the other hand, received its sanctions this summer after a wait of nine-plus weeks, and a full two months prior to the start of football season.

That’s what Miami wants, a break from this dirty business that is quick and clean. If the NCAA really practiced what it preaches about cooperation, it already would have happened.

On Miami: says his visit to the recruit BBQ was great, says he saw a lot of commits and it was a fun experience, says Kc McDermott is working him real hard, says he probably won't take an OV to Miami, but will go to some games there
On Ohio St.: says it's going good with them, says he thinks he'll be going to Ohio St. early in the season
Says he's constantly working on his route running
Dixon and Dwyer play Yearby, Darling, and Central this Saturday
Ohio St. tools feel our Canes are going to be tough to beat

its "Friday Night Lights" time!!! Tonight I get to watch my son perform for the first time in the high school marching band at half time. Pretty excited about it!!

CaneRock

Anyone else worried about our safeties?

Posted by: Montreal-Cane | August 23, 2013 at 12:28 AM

Yeah...DB2 not being 100%, Kacy Rodgers II back there, He didn't bring it AT ALL! last season. I like Highsmith at FS, and Jenkins showed promise last year, but my concern is the depth at that position.

UMike

I was looking at Miami's page in CNN SI...and when you land on the page it shows (largely) the score from our last game. 52-45 against freaking Duke!!!!! Did we really score 52 and only win by 7...against Duke? WOW. I know it has been one offseason, but I do think our D will be greatly improved with all the new additions and the added size, strength and experience of the guys returning. Which is good, because we can win 9 to 11 games giving up 45 points to the Dukes of the world lol

UMike, does your Son still play football?

TonyCane

UMike, I think the NCAA will release its verdict right before we are about to kick off against Alabama in this year's national championship game!

UMike

CR..No..he played in 6th and again in 7th, he broke is finger in 7th but kinda fell out of love with it. I love my kid, but he is a bit of a nerd lol. I was proud that he maid the team to begin with and was starting by 7th. Up until the summer before 6th grade he never played football and I worked with him all that Summer because he wanted to make the team. He loves band and made the All-County band last year. He also made All-County track team. So no football in HS, but band and track along with nerdy stuff like robotics. He wants to be an engineer and he has the brains for it. I got to admit, it took me a little time to realize my son wasn't going to be the popular cool athlete lol...but at this rate he will be the first person in my family to graduate from high school and he is involved and excels in a lot of stuff outside of sports..very proud of him.

My youngest son is about to turn 10, he has been playing tackle football since he was 6 and I'm always a coach on his team. He loves football. He is on the line right now and is the best tackler we have, he has a future in football for sure.

UMike

Tony..that would be fine with me lol

UMike

NICE!

Same thing with mine's...although they still play sports, I think their future is in math related. They're light years ahead of me in the math department LMAO!

Sarasota 'cane

It sounds like your "doing the do" with your kids UMike! My daughter was a nerd in H.S. and college. She refused to live the life I wanted for her and I couldn't be happier!
She wanted to make movies and I'll be damned if she didn't make it happen.

Go 'canes!

Canesfan_1

Mike but still note his last remark: "If the NCAA really practiced what it preaches about cooperation, it already would have happened."

He's actually agreeing that the ruling should have been already handed down, and the NCAA website says 8-12 weeks on average. We're at ten weeks, on the back end of almost THREE YEARS!!! The other examples of 4 months were exceptions, and those were much shorter investigations.

It's time for the morons in Indiana to get of their asses and rule no further penalties.

UMike

Sota..yea he is coming into his own and Im so happy for him. He is way smarted than I was at his age and will go on to be way smarter than me.

CR, I havent been able to help with school work in years, Im always like "didn't you go over that in school" haha

UMike

Canesfan_1.. I agree they need to hurry, especially with the spotlight on the case the way it is. I was just pointing out that the 6-8 weeks a lot of us had penciled in may not have been realistic.

Sun-Sentinel staff predictions!

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/um-hurricanes/sfl-miami-hurricanes-2013-season-predictions,0,502558.story

UMike

Growing up on a military base with Marines for parents, University of Miami freshman linebacker Alex Figueroa learned early there is a right way and a wrong way to do things.

His father, Luis, taught him one of those life lessons by the way he showed Alex to tie his shoes.

“He would tie my shoe for me, show me show step by step. He wouldn’t use any of the around the rabbit ear moves. He would be straight up,” Figueroa said. “When it was my time to do it, if I had my hands wrong, didn’t do exactly what he said but still got it around, he would say that’s not how you do it, and I would have do it all over again.

“That’s just another example how precise my dad is, and how being brought up by him really instilled that in me.”

Precision and perfection are what the Hurricanes would eventually like to see from the 6-3, 235-pounder from Stafford, Va. But what they are getting out of him since his arrival in January might already be good enough to warrant a starting job a week from Friday night when UM opens the 2013 season against Florida Atlantic at Sun Life Stadium.

In-N-Out is the best fast food chain in the world. I would be surprised if they expand that far east, its a family-owned business (no franchises) and they only have a few restaurants outside of CA (Vegas, maybe Phoenix, and 1 in Dallas IIRC). But if you get one, just be ready for a half-hour minimum wait when it first opens. It will be worth it, and ask me for their secret menu. :)

In honor of Soup being in Bville and to counteract all the burger talk, there used to be a restaurant there that served armadillo. No more.

Researchers discovered something called Hanson disease (HD).

There was no association between HD and place of birth or having hunted, consumed, or had direct or indirect contact with deer, birds, or squirrels, however, analysis showed that residence in Mexico, hunting rabbits, cleaning rabbits, and armadillo exposure from hunting, cleaning, consuming them, or having direct armadillo contact were associated with HD.
