On a hot, humid and overcast night in the 305, your University of Miami Hurricanes beat their South Florida neighbors, the Florida Atlantic University Owls, by a score of 34-6.
However, the eventual four touchdown margin of victory turned out to be maybe the most ironic or misleading stat of the evening.
For the highly favored Hurricanes the 28 point win was much more workman-like than it was impressive. UM struggled to get anything going offensively in the first half and meandered to a 20-6 halftime score. And even though the 'Canes broke off at least two or three big plays in the second half they managed only 14 points against the over-matched Owls.
Fans at they game walked away only mildly impressed with the outcome and wondered out loud about how it was that the much maligned Miami defense could clearly out-perform the highly touted UM offense. The 'Canes gave up only 6 points, substituted players on a regular basis and looked markedly better on the defensive side of the ball as compared to last season.
Senior QB Stephen Morris had an evening that could easily be summed up in one word: meh. As usual and as expected RB Duke Johnson did his thing but it may have been WR Herb Waters who had the best play of the evening. The Herb took the ball from The Duke on a reverse and sauntered his waY left and right through the Owls' swiss cheese defense for a much needed score.
The special teams were very solid with Matt Goudis handling the FG and point after duties and highly experienced newcomer Pat O'Donnell kicking the stuffing out of the ball all night on punts and kickoffs. The return game did nothing special but at least there were no turnovers and consistent play all around.
But do not be fooled by this workman-like win over FAU Canes fans. Much, much more will be required of the Hurricanes on both sides of the ball next week when the hated Florida Gators come to town. It will be time to put on your big boy pants and get ready to rumble when the dreaded SEC reptiles show up at Sun Life Stadium on September 7.
So I have just one question for you: "Are U ready?"
Alex Collins starting 4 the hogs, & looking pretty good considering he's a true frosh.

Twas a pleasure meeting DeeCane and Terrance, Dee is cool to see a game with. The man's got football focus. He keeps track of who's in, who's out, which side of the field they're throwing to, which side their avoiding, whereas I can get distracted by gyrating bottoms of which there were plenty.
Terrance is great company after a game. The man knows how to chill. He sits back, enjoys a couple of his pleasures -- a big stogie and a brewski - chats and relaxes. You can see it and feel it. Everything is right in his world.
As for Native Cane, he's a great dude to take a road trip through Florida with. There's another tale around every bend: hunting gators and wild hogs, kayaking the Alafia, airboating on Kissimmee or swimming in the springs. I learned the best places to buy jerky and swamp cabbage as well as how to cook it. Ever wonder what goes on in a Cowboy Church? Native knows.
I met the white sheep of the Popadak clan: Tom's brother. As for Soup, with a beat down next week, his game shirts are going to be collector's items. Trust me, you're gonna be wearing it 10 years from now.

WWIN, I REALLY do feel good bout nex week.
Posted by: 4-Real | August 31, 2013 at 06:40 PM
SOUP's brother is cool, I've never met the other one though Judson.
The Dude, I'm trying to decide, Logan Thomas = homeless man's Josh Freeman? No, Josh Freeman was actually good at one point.
dj, Cho made them start lying about VT. Hey, plenty of conference titles in a basketball conference to show for it tough.
VA C, he's more my punching bag than my buddy. Love watching Beamer ball self destruct, it's such a 'stay close and pray for rain' type of mentality it will never be top flight successful.

He's going to have to return the keys to the white pickup at this rate.

I understand Beamer. He must think he has a pocket QB? Run that kid.
Posted by: The Dude | August 31, 2013 at 06:55 PM
Beamer ball is so flat.

Special teams the only thing working 4 Bama!!!
Posted by: 4-Real | August 31, 2013 at 06:57 PM
Negative OGV,
Beamer Ball is dead, nada, kaput, erased from existence.
Posted by: BEERicane | August 31, 2013 at 06:58 PM
I'm going to say this though, Beamer looks physically better than he's been since he was in the Big East to me. His team however, not so much, LOL!

Offense and defense have enough points to win without them for now 4-Real.
If this is the best shot you can take against the biggest winners in the modern history of the game who are looking to set the bar higher than ever it has been set before, this is a major failure of leadership. UM better not finish behind this joke program.

All I know Ogv is that Bama best not play Oregon or any other team with a pulse!! Keep in mind Miami beat the crap outta this vt team with a bunch of freshmen!
Posted by: 4-Real | August 31, 2013 at 07:24 PM
As of right this moment, Duke Johnson is leading rusher in all of college football. I think that Miami Norland grad is pretty special
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | August 31, 2013 at 07:34 PM
I will agree with u BigWindy when Duke puts up big numbers against a team with a pulse.

Ro Scott...dang dang dang..that kid can play..get your head together and your shoulder right...can be a major asset
Gus Edwards..I think he may be show us something by mid to late season...nice frame and seemed to have a lil quicks

It sure looks to me like Alabama is making its bid to be (if it is not already) the most dominant college football dynasty evah -- certainly since the NCAA started limiting team scholarships.
Opening your season going into Blacksburg, which most agree is an unwelcoming environment, and thrashing the ever-living **** out of the Hokies -- that's the way to defend a championship (which is, BTW, your 3rd in 4 years).
I don't like 'em, but I have to respect 'em.

Soup and Terrance, were are the pics of you all at the game/?? Hmmmmmm?
Watched the opening of the Clemson - Georgia game. Had to almost stop from laughing out loud "a storied tradition that you never get tired of looking at" as the buses, yes buses come into the stadium. I guess they don't realize that all teams get to their stadiums the same way. Whatever.
Posted by: CGNC | August 31, 2013 at 08:33 PM
Game is in Atlanta dj, but yeah, they've made the people who thought VT had any chance in the preseason look just as bad as the Chokies do tonight in a lot of a ways.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | August 31, 2013 at 08:40 PM
OGV I think it is because Beamer has been there so long they think he must have won something right?
Posted by: CGNC | August 31, 2013 at 08:46 PM
For school that has never won anything but a conference title, he's slightly better than Bill Dooley.
If they need reminding there's always that empty trophy case they can check in a pinch CGNC!

Actually he is a VT grad played there and graduated 1970 I think.....I played HS for him in the 70s we won 38 in a row 2 States...he then went to Maryland and Morehead State.
Shameless Plug (stole that line from Chuck Todd UM grad and biased Liberal) left DT and fullback for VT played for me in youth league.
VTs D did a pretty damn good job vs #1....D kept it close STs and O gave them 3 TDs Foster knows D I see him leaving in next couple to be a HC. Beamers son Shane is Asst HC...worked under Spurrier....I am not sold on him as HC but my contacts tell me that is the VT plan....Foster not at all happy about it as he has had many offers...he will take one soon.
Is Bama #1? Oregon Stanford GA OSU will have something to say maybe they are #1. Bama just like us....catch Sabans comments I sure AG feels the same way....he said Bama has a lot of work to do and we need to put a technical emphasis on fundamentals...Tell em Nick. I preach it endlessly....as a 4 time BCS champ that man damn sure knows what it takes....basics....JMO

Don't think they look like one of the best 25 teams in the nation this year from what I've seen so far.

What's concerning is that FAU is the second worst team that we will face this season, and we had a pedestrian effort against them. I think all of us were hoping for a 40 to 50 point win.
On the positive, I guess a 28 pt win will prevent any overconfidence going into the Florida game.
