Nine days into #CanesCamp, the
Miami Hurricanes held their first preseason scrimmage Sunday afternoon at the
Greentree Practice Fields. The scripted scrimmage lasted for approximately 90
minutes in the mid-90 degree heat.
Artificial crowd
noise was pumped through the sound system during each drive, signature
third-down music was played in an effort to rattle the offense, and referees
enforced penalties on both sides to ensure the scrimmage replicated a real-game
atmosphere.
Several players
were held out of Sunday’s scrimmage. Junior DL David Perry, sophomore DB Deon
Bush and sophomore RB Brandon Yosha were in red (non-contact) jerseys, while six
other Canes were not in pads – junior DE Ufomba Kamalu, senior DT Justin
Renfrow, senior DE David Gilbert, junior DE Anthony Naser, freshman OL Hunter
Knighton and freshman DE Naim Mustafaa.
The scrimmage opened with goal
line and short yardage situations as the offense showcased a number of different
looks. The next set of plays flipped the field, with the ball being spotted
inside the five-yard line.
Senior QB Stephen Morris threw
two TDs, a one-yarder to senior FB Maurice Hagens and then a 30-yarder
over-the-shoulder catch by junior WR Phillip Dorsett to end the scrimmage.
Redshirt freshman RB Danny Dillard posted a 3-yard TD and senior RB Eduardo
Clements later found pay dirt from six yards out – all after initial contact to
barrel into the end zone.
Defensively, the Hurricanes
registered three sacks, four tackles for loss, three pass deflections and three
pass break-ups.
Sophomore PK Matt Goudis was a
perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts, knocking home all three kicks from
between 45-47 yards out.
The Hurricanes
are off Monday and will return to practice Tuesday morning with their second
two-a-days practice of #CanesCamp.
Single-game and season tickets for the 2013 season are on sale now at www.CanesTix.com. For the latest information on the Miami Hurricanes, follow us on Twitter, @MiamiHurricanes.

OGV. Just wanted to make it clear I rather not give back that trophy despite Elmer Fudds drawbacks. And honestly. It isn't on him after that. It was this university going in the cheap with Shannon and exposing his lack if experience. Coker was not a great leader but he kept together a bond. Whoever did that coaching search after him set this program back years and I say that living Randy as a Hurricane. I'm sad to see him in Arkansas.

The coach "search" for RS was a joke. The problem was two fold. 1) If we didn't hire him, we probably would have lost him to another program as a DC or as a HC. This probably would have been in everyones best interest except for the #2 reason. 2) Miami couldn't pass on him w/o seeming like race had something to do with it. He was the "hot" DC in America and was already in our program and a lifelong Cane. They'd say well if he's not qualified who is? We were kinda stuck into hiring him. Plus if he had any kind of success at say a Memphis, there would have been all kinds of egg on our face. I really thought RS would save us. I thought we won games because his defenses were so stout and that they were starting to slip like the rest of the team because of Coker's lack of accountability. Hind sight says RS should have left for HC experience. But I feel like we had to and that Randy earned a chance to be HC. It just didn't work out unfortunately for Him, The U, us fans, everyone. I still love RS as a Hurricane. I think he had trouble relating the intensity required to play at The U to the young guys because it seemed so obvious to him. I think he trusted his players too much.

Apart from Morris, Duke or Dorsett, if you were to draft anyone for college fantasy football from the Canes who would it be?
I'm thinking Clement for my final pick. What about Coley?
Posted by: TonyCane | August 11, 2013 at 07:24 PM
Dude, that's IT right there. Too much trust...trusting the players to eat right, to work out...to show the same intensity that he brought as a player and that he worked to instill in Cortez Kennedy.
Posted by: TonyCane | August 11, 2013 at 07:25 PM
4 Real, no harm or problem with what you said. I agree AG has not burned up the rope either.
OGV I am going to tell you a secret.Coker did not put that trophy in the case...I did from behind the curtain, a la Wizard of Oz!!! I left him to his own devices the next year.....and he forgot to pay Terry....and the rest is history!!!
Randy was a very good DC. He has problems dealing a straight unbiased deck with people. Like Dude says, it was all a politically correct thing, there was not a real search. What if we did not do it and he did succeed somewhere? We look bad and it gets played racially. It was a difficult situation. Coker was there because Dorsey and the Boys pushed for it. Never let players make coaching decisions it will go wrong. It did, badly. Bothe guys were good honest people that is fact. I liked them both; but Onion was harder to like; he just did not get along with anybody it seemed. Chip on the shoulder, maybe not trusting due to his tough life...don't know...but good men for sure...just not the right coach for the U.

Dyron Dye and his attorney, Darren Heitner, filed an incident report last spring with the Coral Gables police department in which it’s accused that an NCAA investigator had “coerced” Dye into making statements that benefited The Association’s case against the Hurricanes. That investigator, Rich Johanningmeier, has since “retired.”
Dye was suspended for four games in the 2011 season in connection to his involvement in the Shapiro scandal. It was shown by the NCAA in August of that year that Dye received from Shapiro and “UM athletics personnel” $738 in impermissible benefits.
Dye suffered an Achilles injury during the first scrimmage this past spring and is out indefinitely, leaving his status for the 2013 season up in the air even prior to this latest attempt by the NCAA to save some type of face in what’s gone well beyond a FUBAR situation.
The police complaint was rejected and the bad guys at the NCAA are taking their sweet time to clear him to play in 2013. Obviously the NCAA didn't appreciate that Mr.Dye filed a complaint against The Association...
I just think the NCAA is acting in bad faith in Dye's case.If he can't play this season i Wonder if he will be able to redshirt...
With everything that has been going on the last few years with the NCAA, we have every reasons to hate the clowns in Indianapolis (and not the former baseball team...lol..). I wrote to every members on the COI and once you know where they are from and which University they have attented or are working for, it doesn't surprise me that they made the process much more painful for UM than it should have been. See how Oregon got away...so easy...Manziel will get away just like Newton...Yes it's us against the world and we love it. We will shake the world in the coming months and years....We are Canes for life!!!
Posted by: Montreal-Cane | August 11, 2013 at 07:34 PM
I am beyond all that stuff, those guys just did not pan out. I am a huge Oakland Raider fan....when was the last time we made a good hire....EONS ago....it happens. I just want to be relevant....we have been a has been since...well for almost 10 years. A heel program, losers...I said it. There are no excuses for not being back near the top of the heap every year...not for me. I hate losing, I hate .500....I hate 7-5...I want to win every damn game from here to eternity!!!! Its just the way I am programmed. I work so hard every year to make my guys reach their peak....and they have done so by giving me everything they have as a group towards winning as a team....they achieve so much by doing the basics right...I do life, job school and football on fundamentals...it works JMO

VA C, I don't believe your secret. Nice try though man.
Yeah those of you pointing out the assistant salary miserliness, I never got that either, you're going to promote your coordinator in house, but then get cheap on the staff paychecks for him once he's there and just figure there will be no problems or something? Never added up to me why the administration wanted to handcuff a guy learning on the job in a tough situation like that, especially after jumping to the ACC for the revenue stream increase for the department?

Good to sdd Dorsett finally learned to master that over the shoulder catch (see ND game). Seems he has been working on more than just his speed. Coley should play and Waters and Hurns are solid. Looking to see what happens with rashawn Scott . When he was on the field last year and this spring, scott was simply outstanding. Scott's movements in live action sure passes the eye test. Looks likd the canes are developing that depth at wr that they haven't had for years. And the Canes finally have an NFL-ready quarterback who developed his skills the old fashioned way -- hard work. Look for Morris and the WRs to light up the record books in 2013

Message to OGV, you never bring anything important to the discussion other than to bash DNO and Golden. I know you're friends w soup but you've annoyed us all for sometime. Unless you have some insightful info to present to the thread please don't post anything. We come on this site to read about our beloved canes and not read some pompus person who doesn't like the coach so he types nothing but negatives about him (look it's human nature when you don't like something you'll root for their failure to make yourself look like a prophet). Wait till the season get's going and then say something (if you're right}. Till then please...please...shut the pie hole.

The most straightforward quantitative aspect of the difference between RS and AG is strength and conditioning. For some reason we got weak and had poor fitness. We were getting pushed around and owned in the 4th qtr.
Same strength and condition ing coach and now much better weight numbers and all pass the conditioning test.
Difference: the head coach who sets the tone

Anyone see the USA Today sports section from the weekend edition? They listed the preseason rankings for the top h.s. football teams, with several south FL teams being very highly ranked, including BTW at #1. I know this general topic was discussed already. However, what I liked was how there were several mentions of three top players from this team already planning on going to the U, giving the U some extra positive media attention nationwide. Moten was mentioned with STA, but obviously without a team right now. Would love to see Dixon and Moten head this way, and wouldn't be surprised if one had already made up his mind.
Good weekend all.

Q, I thought for about half a second of tearing that laughable post down point by point, but then realized, not worth the effort. Guess somebody's mouse and arrow keys on their computer don't work so they can't scroll down and avert their eyes to protect their fragile feelings.
I got a feeling that your game six verdict is about four games later than most fans are ready to cut slack to the guy. Like I said, no wins against a top 10 team yet and that game is the perfect opportunity to end that 0-for.
