Nine days into #CanesCamp, the
Miami Hurricanes held their first preseason scrimmage Sunday afternoon at the
Greentree Practice Fields. The scripted scrimmage lasted for approximately 90
minutes in the mid-90 degree heat.
Artificial crowd
noise was pumped through the sound system during each drive, signature
third-down music was played in an effort to rattle the offense, and referees
enforced penalties on both sides to ensure the scrimmage replicated a real-game
atmosphere.
Several players
were held out of Sunday’s scrimmage. Junior DL David Perry, sophomore DB Deon
Bush and sophomore RB Brandon Yosha were in red (non-contact) jerseys, while six
other Canes were not in pads – junior DE Ufomba Kamalu, senior DT Justin
Renfrow, senior DE David Gilbert, junior DE Anthony Naser, freshman OL Hunter
Knighton and freshman DE Naim Mustafaa.
The scrimmage opened with goal
line and short yardage situations as the offense showcased a number of different
looks. The next set of plays flipped the field, with the ball being spotted
inside the five-yard line.
Senior QB Stephen Morris threw
two TDs, a one-yarder to senior FB Maurice Hagens and then a 30-yarder
over-the-shoulder catch by junior WR Phillip Dorsett to end the scrimmage.
Redshirt freshman RB Danny Dillard posted a 3-yard TD and senior RB Eduardo
Clements later found pay dirt from six yards out – all after initial contact to
barrel into the end zone.
Defensively, the Hurricanes
registered three sacks, four tackles for loss, three pass deflections and three
pass break-ups.
Sophomore PK Matt Goudis was a
perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts, knocking home all three kicks from
between 45-47 yards out.
The Hurricanes
are off Monday and will return to practice Tuesday morning with their second
two-a-days practice of #CanesCamp.
Single-game and season tickets for the 2013 season are on sale now at www.CanesTix.com. For the latest information on the Miami Hurricanes, follow us on Twitter, @MiamiHurricanes.

Yeah but how much do U wanna bet ME that they do not end their careers at UM there?

I thought those were the keys that spelled out, "Welcome to Canespace, post here, post often," but apparently reading it now my fingers were on the wrong set of home row letters the entire time and it came out quoting Navarro?
Oops.
I'm actually really curious as to what Manny thinks of the team chances this year since he said he was impressed by the defense for the first time in forever, but don't know how long he had been locked out of watching them in the almost decade he's claiming he hadn't felt this way about what he was seeing from them in practice.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | August 11, 2013 at 10:38 PM
I gotta admit, quoting Navarro was FUNNY.
It brings back so many memories, right?
Posted by: SOUP | August 11, 2013 at 10:47 PM
4-real, I know. Lots here were saying the last couple days that UM was the favorite and I was questioning it.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 11, 2013 at 10:52 PM
SOUP, I wouldn't be surprised to see them switch at some point. Especially Corn who is dynamic with the ball in his hands
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 11, 2013 at 10:53 PM
UH, Ohio that is not what I asked U.
I didn't ask U IF they would switch, I asked U how much do U wanna bet me that they WILL switch during their careers?
Since U were SO right about the first call I thought that U might wanna be right about the next one too? LOL
Posted by: SOUP | August 11, 2013 at 10:59 PM
I'm not going to bet on where we'll be deep at because of transfers, injuries, etc, which is why both (mostly Corn) are playing the position now.
I don't take that big of a risk in betting. That's like playing blackjack but I can only go up to 17 without going over. Lol

we might see them as RB at some point. And if Elder becomes as good as Shane Larkin, he may have to drop football later on. Playing 2 sports at UM is close to impossible because of academics. At FSU even if you can't read you get your caveman diploma...lol

Morris needs to lead the team to something significant is why, I don't really have much of a problem with him not getting hyped by anybody because as great a statistical season he had last year, good teams shut him down even when he wasn't gimpy on the foot. He needs to play with a chip on his shoulder because he's playing for a chance to strike it rich this year so motivation shouldn't be lacking for any reason for the guy.

Intriguing =/= 'top' necessarily, just saying.
SOUP, sometimes I don't know if Morris hates to lose, which would make sense when you think about Al saying he needs to be more of a leader.

About one of the dumbest things you have posted.
I'm pretty sure he hates to lose more than your hero Shannon.
Also, something that the coach, who you clearly hate, said a couple of years ago is getting twisted into basically saying Morris is not a winner.
Take your sad, tired pathetic act out of here. I think most people are completely disgusted with your ongoing, spiteful hatefest towards this coaching staff and team.

2015 Monarch ATH Shawn Burgess-Becker is looking to prove to other teams in south Florida that his team isn’t a joke.
“We’re just trying to let people know that we are a football team just like everyone else, have people show us respect and we’re trying to make the playoffs this year, have a better season from last year and just keep on going from there.”
The 6’2 190 pound athlete isn’t looking forward to any game in particular but rather taking it one game at a time.
“We’re taking it one game at a time, we don’t really have a game focused on. After that game we are just going to focus on the next game.”
Burgess-Becker has experience on both sides of the ball playing safety last year for his team and also working as a receiver this summer, but he won’t be limited to only those positions this year.
“I don’t have a preference for any position. They have me playing a little quarterback this year behind our starting quarterback Michael Harris, so I’ll be all over the field this year.”
The Monarch product still has a lot of time to make a decision as to what college he will attend, but that didn’t hold him back from releasing a list of four top schools.
“Alabama, LSU, Miami and UF.”
The versatile athlete broke down each school and what he likes about them.

Plantation tight end Ravian Pierce recently named Arkansas, Alabama, and Florida as three schools that were sticking out to him. Although those three might have the edge right now, Pierce is not limiting is recruitment them.
“To be honest, those are not the only three schools I’m looking at. I’m still open, but right now I’m feeling that those schools are leading for me,” said Pierce.
Despite Miami not cracking his top list, the two sides are staying in touch.
“Me and Miami are still talking. Coach D’Onofrio and I are still chatting.”
What is it about the ‘Canes that Pierce is unsure about?

2014 Miami Central offensive tackle Trevor Darling is one of the many team leaders on the rockets team who pushes the younger players to achieve greater goals.
“Right now, were stressing to continue to work hard in practice. We’re going to push them to get the most out of them and get the best out of them. We just talk to them about not letting the pressure get to your head because we’re a big school and just because we have a big fanclub.”
Central’s schedule is jam packed with tough opponents including a trip to to play nationally ranked Don Bosco Prep, as well as playing the talented local teams such as Booker T, Northwestern and Carol City. The towering offensive linemen can’t seem to pick a favorite game though.
“I’m most excited about the national teams, but at the same time the local teams that we play because we know some of the players from the other teams and we talk to each other and get riled up.”
The 6’5 295 pound offensive linemen has been the longest standing commitment for the university of Miami when he gave his pledge before his junior year. While some would think that his commitment would begin to weaken, he reassures ‘Canes fans he is still solidly committed.
“Yes, I’m still a 100%.”

Travonte Valentine has no shortage of confidence, which is an important trait for all dominant defensive tackles to have. The 6-5, 320-pound lineman has been in the spotlight for a few years now as he has been committed to Louisvile, UF, and Miami. Has the attention he's received decreased since his commitment to the 'Canes.
"Nah, not really but I just ignore the media sometimes so other than that it's been great. Out of all the commits I did, I think Miami was the biggest one. I'm in the spotlight basically all the time with Kc McDermott, Chad Thomas, and Mike Smith. I'll be seeing all my teammates at the barbecue and I'll probably see guys like Johnnie Dixon and Ermon Lane so hopefully they'll pull that trigger and come to the U. It's gon' be a great feeling," said Valentine.
Valentine is extremely excited to have the opportunity to play alongside Booker T. Washington's Chad Thomas at Miami.
"They don't know what's coming. Thomas and Valentine's day are going to be there so most definitely I can't wait for that."
The Champagnat Catholic defensive tackle has often talked about bringing the old Miami mentally back to the 'Canes. He got more specific as to what he wants to do.
"I want that old school. I'm rocking the camo hat like back in the old day where they rocked nothing but camo outfits. I already told the coaching staff don't be surprised if I only wear camo because I'm old school. Miami will be shocked when they see I bring it back."

St. Thomas Aquinas defensive tackle Anthony Moten committed to UF in early April before de-committing last month. With the dawn of his senior season upon him, Moten has tried to put recruiting on the back burner.
"I've just been basically focusing on football, that's what my goal is. My coaches have been telling me college will come, but the season is here right now. I have big goals this season so there's no point in me worrying about college right now," said Moten.
After learning from two division-1 defensive linemen, the reigns are now Moten's at Aquinas.
"Joey (Bosa) left me a lot of weight on my shoulders and then Jelani (Hamilton) before that so I feel like I have a lot to prove."
His de-commitment from Florida hasn't stopped him from considering the Gators.
"I'm definitely considering Florida still, but I like Florida State, Miami, South Carolina, Notre Dame, and Michigan State."
The hometown Hurricanes have been rumored to be Moten's leader and he commented on that.

LB's Monday Translations:
"Pat Forde from Yahoooooo didn't put Stephen Morris on his top 25 QB list today...He is getting blasted on twitter...Good for him."
Wow, somebody got hit with the stupid stick. I guess he knows more than the NFL.
"According to Rivals the BBQ helped "shore up" Edouard's commitment."
Translation: every single person looked at him and more than subtly mentioned that if he wanted to play behind a junior varsity offensive line and turn down a top 40 education...
...enjoy mediocrity.
More importantly, check out the defensive line upgrades just within the past couple of weeks. Oh, and Gilbert can play right away.
Translation: the NCAA mess is WANING.
18 Days to go.
