News and Notes from #CanesCamp from www.hurricanesports.com:
· #100 Days Countdown to Kickoff: 15 days (Miami vs. FAU at 8 p.m. on 8/30).
· Thursday was the Canes’ third two-a-days session of #CanesCamp.
· Both Thursday practices were held on the UM intramural fields, while the grounds crew worked on the Greentree Practice Fields.
· After wearing a red (non-contact) jersey Wednesday, junior WR Rashawn Scott was back in a white offense jersey for Thursday’s practice.
· Sophomore RB Brandon Yosha remains in a red (non-contact) jersey, while sophomore DB Deon Bush and junior DL David Perry wore yellow (limited contact) jerseys.
· Thursday’s morning session started late after the campus’s lightning detection system alarm went off at 7 a.m. Practice eventually started after 8:30 a.m. The Canes wore full pads for the morning practice.
More weather delays hampered the start of the afternoon practice session. The Canes went without shoulder pads for the afternoon, practicing for 90 minutes amidst intermittent rain showers.
QUOTABLES
Al Golden on what the biggest things for Friday’s scrimmage…
“It’s time to cut the cord with some of these guys. It can’t be about yelling from the sideline. They’re going to have crowd noise and music. They’ve got to learn to signal. They’ve got to be independent thinkers out there. They’ve got to work collectively in terms of safeties to corners, safeties to linebackers, linebackers to the front. On offense, just getting the signal and playing fast. We’ll see who can play. It’ll probably be 40 to 50 plays with each group. Maybe a little bit more. I think we’ll get a break with the weather. Two nights ago it was nice at night. So I think the guys will be excited about that, and this will obviously set the way it is because it’s two weeks out from FAU.
Golden on how correctable tackling and completion percentage is…
“Well we’ve got to get the tackling squared away fast because that will rear its head in the opening, there’s no question. And you don’t want to be a day late on that. A bad tackling performance in an opener can destroy you so we’re trying to take care of that. Again, there’s excuse for the completion percentage to be the way it is with the experience that we have, with the protection that we’re getting, and the type of Quarterback that we have leading us there’s no excuse for that. So that was disappointing and we’ve got to get it fixed. But as I said, I’m worried about everything right now. We have a long way to go as a team and there’s a lot of practices between now and game week.”
Golden on whether or not the scrimmage will be like a game-like situation…
“Yeah, what we’ll try to do is have orange on one side and white on the other. Again, there’s a sense of comfort if you just go offense and defense because if I’m the second team guard I’m looking at Linder, I’m just waiting for when coach calls me. When they’re on that side, and you’ve got a first until on each side the three’s got to be ready to go. Guys come out and they’ve got to go in. They’ve got to pay attention. But I think the biggest thing is that they learn how to go on and off the field with the sub patterns and it makes them think fast so it’s important for us.”
Beau Sandland on whether spring was different than what he expected…
“I don’t know if it was different than I expected, but
it was definitely a transition period with everybody being bigger, faster,
stronger, smarter and everything at this level. You have to do everything by the
book and do your techniques and your right steps and foot placement or else
you’ll get exposed and stuff. I always said you could get away with it high
school and junior college maybe you wouldn’t get away with it this level with
the athletes and smarter defenders.”
Sandland on his biggest adjustment so far…
“Probably, like I said, maybe the speed. So much faster than junior college and all of the defenders do a way better job at jamming you up at the line and everything like that. Just a combination of all those things… the speed of the game and physicality and just having to know all of your footwork and hand placement and everything.”
Duke Johnson on the importance of Friday’s scrimmage…
“It’s a big deal. The first scrimmage was just to get them warmed up to what we’re going to be doing and how things are working and the other scrimmage is going out there and fighting for your position.”
Stephen Morris on how to improve on pass coverage and percentage…
“I definitely think that’s true. We definitely need to
improve on our completion percentage. I think that the best way to do that is
just take what the defense is giving you and not force anything. All camp we’ve
just been stressing just accuracy and decision making from the quarterback’s
room. And I think Coach Coley’s done an unbelievable job of really stressing
that every single day with us, not letting us forget where we need to be. We’re
trying to have 75 percent at the end of the day for practice. We’ve just got to
do the little things right. That comes with pocket presence, receiving the right
guys, finding the right targets, and never forcing stuff.”
Morris on the process of working on his footwork…
“That started after the (2012) season. Throughout the whole off-season, throughout spring, that’s just been my main concern is just continue to make myself better in the pocket, continue to improve my footwork. And other than that, everything will come after that.”
Morris on what he wants to see at Friday’s scrimmage…
“For the scrimmage tomorrow, I just want to see us compete. I just want to see the defense come out strong. I want to see offense respond well. I want to take care of players. You know, no stupid hits and no cheap shots and stuff like that. I just want to see the offense move the chains.”

Some Canes camp observations. Don't see any catch and release players from the incoming class. Freshman like Coley, Burns, Muhammad can help.

Newcomers Kamulu, Gilbert and Renfrow might not be Hurricane Hall of Famers but they're men, not kids, giving the Canes size and strength.

*** Another running back and new transfer, listed as 5-8, 198-pound junior DeAndre Johnson, has joined the Hurricanes roster from the University of Iowa. He is a Miamian and played with Stephen Morris at Monsignor Pace. In 2011 as a redshirt freshman at Iowa, Johnson ran for 79 yards on 18 carries in four games. He did not compete in 2012 and Golden said he believes he's eligible to play this season.
"I like DeAndre,'' Golden said. "He's got a lot to learn in terms of how we do it here in the offense but he wants to be a great teammate, he wants to compete, he's trying to get into special teams. He's got the requisite speed, he's got a good build, 196 or 198 pounds. Guys like that are awessome to have on the team. They can always play a role for us."

Way too early projections, cont.:
Round 2, pick 38: Morris to Arizona
Posted by: LB | August 15, 2013 at 03:48 PM
Its been a long time since we have had a quarterback projected this high going into his senior season. Although that is great, I believe he will end up getting drafted even higher with the good year that I think he and his teammates will have this year.

With Gilbert (Broward native) and DeAndre (miami-Dade native), we have more S. Fla. recruits who left to attend Big 10 schools under Shannon, and are now being brought back home by Golden where they belong so that they can help the U make that magical run this year back to the top of college football.

I want to rehash a rumor that was thrown out here.
Stephen Morris partying and not caring after wins.
I don't know if they are true but I was a college athlete. I'm not sure if OGV was. Almost after every Saturday game, although I played d2 there was a party for the football players where a decent amount of guys got intoxicated. The guys that didn't where there to pick up girls.
We all appreciated Morris being a coach last year when he was hurt. He grew from that. The bottome line though is he is getting a lot of press this preseason and he is blowing up even more on campus and in Miami in general. We all know the women in Miami can be the hottest and most scandalous in the world.
I hope he is ready for the upcoming season and doesn't let the hype get to his head. If anybody believes this season doesn't hinge on Stephen you're crazy. We don't have a world beater defense but with an elite QB our offense has the talent to win 9-10 games easily with this schedule. Anything less is a failure.
The time is now for Stephen and I hope he understands the ramifications cause we are talking millions for the first 2 rounds but if he has a bad season he could easily be undrafted. That is how much of a variable he is.

In other news ...
Researchers surveyed Emergency Room patients who’d been drinking. They found that Budweiser was the number one brand consumed, followed Steel Reserve Malt Liquor, Colt 45 malt liquor, Bud Ice (another malt liquor), Bud Light, and a discount-priced vodka called Barton’s.
Though Budweiser has 9.1 percent of the national beer market, it represented 15 percent of the of the E.R. “market.” The disparity was even more pronounced for Steel Reserve. It has only .8 percent of the market nationally, but accounted for 14.7 percent of the E.R. market. In all, Steel Reserve, Colt 45, Bud Ice, and another malt liquor, King Cobra, account for only 2.4 percent of the U.S. beer market, but accounted for 46 percent of the beer consumed by E.R. patients.

Once a prized four-star recruit out of Miami’s Booker T. Washington High School, Clements (5-9, 182 pounds) is no longer chasing NFL dreams or setting lofty goals for himself. He knows exactly where he stands at the University of Miami — a backup to star running back Duke Johnson, somebody he says is just happy to be back out on the field.
“My whole thing is just to finish healthy,” said Clements, who in 31 games in three seasons at Miami has run for 184 yards and three touchdowns on 39 carries and caught 17 passes for 183 yards while also registering 13 tackles on special teams.
“I really don’t have any goals right now. It seems like every time I come up with goals they don’t happen. So basically, my goal is to do whatever the team wants and help them accomplish team goals this year. Whatever I can do to help, those are my goals.”
Nicknamed “OT” for Overtown, Clements is beloved by his teammates and coach Al Golden. When Clements scored a touchdown in last Sunday’s closed scrimmage, his teammates lifted him up in celebration.
“He’s not the biggest running back in the world, but he’s definitely one of the toughest and a great dude,” center Shane McDermott said.

I'm not really sure how Golden is able to collect all these players, but its good depth if nothing else. I believe Golden when he says we have actual competitions now for playing time. We have a full team. I don't think its as talented as the teams Butch built, but winning this year will be the key for next. Like Ohio says, win and they will come. I think we are ready to start winning. 12-0 until otherwise. Just gonna have fun routing for this young dynamic offense and hope for improvement on D.
Posted by: The Dude | August 15, 2013 at 11:41 PM
OGV...It used to be SO MUCH BETTER. So here are the reasons why I will NOT go:
1. They hold it inside the BUC in a side or practice area and it is like a dungeon in there. No lights, no windows and very depressing.
2. It is VERY controlled in terms of access and the crowd. They herd U like SHEEP and they smack U if U step out of line.
3. No more autographs except for the poster.
4. Drive three hours, pay toll and gas, to talk to one player and get MAYBE one autograph or photo?
NOT HAPPENING!

Airz workin..
FOOTBALL TEAM
**The team will scrimmage tomorrow for the second time. “It’s time to cut the cord with some of these guys. It can’t be about screaming from the sideline. They’re going to have crowd noise and music so they’ve gotta learn the signals and be independent thinkers out there,” said Golden.
---More from Golden on tomorrow’s scrimmage: “What we’ll try to do is have orange on one side and white on the other. There’s a sense of comfort if you just go offense and defense because if I’m the second-team guard I’m just looking at Linder and waiting for when coach calls me. I think the biggest thing is that they learn how to go on and off the field with the sub patterns and it makes them think fast.”
**Golden confirmed today that Preston Dewey would be with the team this fall despite his absence from camp thus far.
**According to Golden, freshman RB Augustus Edwards is dealing with an NCAA Clearinghouse issue that should be resolved shortly. Edwards has not participated in the last couple practice, but is expected back in time for the first game.
**Golden was asked if the team would have any days off between now and the first game against Florida Atlantic, he said, “Any days off? You sound like one of the players (laughs).”
**The backup running back competition seems to be narrowed in between Dallas Crawford and Eduardo Clements, which should not be a surprise, but Gus Edwards is also impressing Duke Johnson. “Gus can come in right away and play. He’s learning the playbook fast and he has the will to want to play and want to learn,” said Johnson
**Golden pointed out completion percentage as an area that needs to be improved upon during practice and Stephen Morris chimed in. “We definitely need to improve on completion percentage. I think that the best way to do that is to just take what the defense is giving you and not force anything. All camp we've been stressing accuracy and decision-making from the quarterback’s room and I think Coach Coley is doing an unbelievable job of stressing that every day with us,” said Morris. Allen Hurns added, “We just need to be precise on our routes.”
**From all accounts, Wisconsin OLB/DE transfer David Gilbert has made an early impression and seems like a player who will be able to impact the team this year.
**The depth of the offensive line was viewed as one of the strengths of the team heading into camp, but the injury bug bit the unit as Hunter Knighton (out for season, shoulder) and Danny Isidora (three months, foot) suffered injuries. There still seems to be enough behind the starting five between Malcolm Bunche/Ereck Flowers, Jared Wheeler, Sonny Odogwu, and Hunter Wells, but it’s unfortunate to see these injuries. Isidora is a redshirt freshman, while Knighton is a true freshman who arrived in January.
FOOTBALL RECRUITING
**Here are a few tidbits I picked up from last Saturday’s Dolphins HS Media Day at Sun Life Stadium:
---I spoke with Dillard QB Bud Martin and asked him about his teammate Dennis Turner (Miami commit) and Martin couldn’t stop raving about him. “People will definitely find out about him this season. He can do it all. His speed is unreal and he can play receiver, defensive back, whatever. Miami got a really good one,” said Martin.
---I spoke to a Champagnat Catholic coach who told me that Travonte Valentine is in the 320-325 weight range right now, as opposed to the 345 he arrived in Miami at. An in-shape Valentine will be a nightmare for opposing defenses this season.
---A name generating a lot of buzz for Miami Northwestern is 2015 defensive back Khalid McGee. Mike Smith, Ryan Mayes, Shermarke Spence (yes, Sean’s little brother), and head coach Stephen Field have had nothing but great things to say about McGee. I heard that McGee also performed very well at UGA camp over the summer. McGee is on the shorter side at 5’8”, but is a playmaker. I’m excited to see what he does this season considering the high praise he has received.
---Tito Benach spoke with Alin Edouard at the event and Edouard told Tito that he hasn’t been able to get in contact with the Miami coaches at all recently. Edouard told Tito that he planned to meet with the coaches after Sunday’s scrimmage. The Miami QB commit told Tito on Monday that he did not end up meeting with the coaches on Sunday, so that issue is still in the air. There is also talk that Louisville pulled Edouard’s offer so it’s going to be interesting to see how things develop with him and Miami. It is still unlikely he winds in the class.
---A player to watch from Columbus is 2017 DB Trajan Bandy. People might think I’m crazy to mention an incoming high school freshman, but the bloodlines are strong here as Bandy’s cousin is Deon Bush. I’m told that Bandy is in line to start at cornerback for the Explorers, which is an extremely rare feat for a freshman at Columbus. The last few players from Columbus to get significant playing time freshman year? Notre Dame LB Anthony Rabasa, FIU RB Jakhari Gore, and Louisville RB Brandon Radcliff.
**I’ve mentioned this previously, but it will be very interesting to see what the coaches do with the safety position. From this class, Ryan Mayes could slide back into that spot, but I don’t see him as having a safety’s mentality. As I posted last week, Trayone Gray has a long ways to go to be able to qualify plus he prefers playing offense. Miramar’s Andre Godfrey is a name that has generated some buzz recently and I’m told that Miami is still in contact with him. Michael Johnson from Champagnat (Louisville commit) is a prospect who I’m a fan of, but a Champagnat coach told me that Miami told him “he’s not what they’re looking for”.
**Here are my recent interviews with Dalvin Cook and Central HC Roland Smith: http://www.canesinsight.com/content/...land-Smith-Q-A
http://www.canesinsight.com/content/...istening-to-UM
Something I would like to add about Miami’s recruitment of Cook is the connection between ‘Canes running backs coach Hurlie Brown and Roland Smith. Brown and Smith played in the same defensive backfield at Miami and I’m told the two still have a very good relationship to this day. Having Smith on Miami’s side with Cook definitely can’t hurt.
**The news of Ernest Suttles winding up at Memphis was a tricky situation. He did sign with Miami, but it seems like administrative higher-ups did not clear the signing. The coaches wanted him, but administration didn’t want the baggage stemming from his situation at Nebraska.
**I hate to beat a dead horse on the subject, but here’s the bottom-line about Quincy Wilson, Ermon Lane, and Chris Lammons committing to UF. Quincy Wilson did not have a Miami offer (a subject that has been discussed countless times) so that wasn’t a “loss” in the eyes of the staff. Ermon Lane was a player that Miami wanted, but for whatever reason their opinion of him wasn’t as high as their opinion of others such as Johnnie Dixon and Darrell Langham. Lammons was a prospect who Miami got on earlier than basically any of the big programs, but it became increasingly evident as the months went on that it was either going to be Nigel Bethel II or Lammons in the class, so things cooled down with him after Bethel committed.
