2014 Blanche Ely outside linebacker Terry McCray has been not only working on the field with his team to get plays down, but has also been trying to connect them off the field and build a sense of unity.

“Right now, we’ve been together a lot. We just try and come together, we have like barbecue’s to get a better connection, but right now I think my team, (Blanche) Ely, would be the team to beat.”

McCray is hoping to end on a good note with the Tigers and is making the effort to be the a senior leader on both sides of the field.

“I try to show the younger guys, how to show college coaches what they want in a kid, like ‘be on time,’ ‘be consistent’ and also be dedicated to the game.”

McCray gave his pledge to the Hurricanes a couple of weeks back and remains a solid commitment.

“Yes, I’m still a hundred percent.”

The 6’3, 210 pound linebacker has taken notice of the class Coach Golden is building this year and is anxious to suit up with many of them next year.

“I love it and one of the things I love is half of us are from South Florida. For a while schools like Alabama and LSU, they had been taking all the guys from down here and we couldn’t get them to Miami, but Coach Golden made a good effort to get kids to stay.”

Camp notes: Miami Hurricanes’ Gus Edwards has eligibility issue
by Matt Porter

Miami running back Gus Edwards, expected to be a big bruiser to help take the load off star tailback Duke Johnson, has hit a roadblock.

Edwards has not been at practice this week. Coach Al Golden explained it by saying the 6-foot-2, 230-pound true freshman has an eligibility issue.

“He’s got to take care of a couple clearinghouse issues,” Golden said. “It’s not anything that he’s academically deficient in. It’s really just a clearinghouse deal. As soon as he’s cleared to go, he’s good to go. That should be any day now.”

The clearinghouse Golden refers to is the NCAA Eligibility Center, which ensures Division I and II student-athletes are eligible to practice and play. Edwards practiced during the first week of camp, but was pulled off the field.

A UM spokesman said Edwards was cleared by the NCAA to practice, but the Eligibility Center noticed an issue. CaneSport.com reported Edwards could be back Tuesday.

Edwards, a three-star recruit from Staten Island, N.Y., was the nation’s No. 1 fullback according to Rivals.com.

Scott OK: Receiver Rashawn Scott was in a red (no-contact) jersey on Wednesday, but Golden said he didn’t know what was wrong. Maybe, he said, Scott had a foot injury. “Unless it’s really significant, those guys have to work it through with the trainers,” Golden said. “I think he’ll be ready to go. There he is now.” As Golden spoke, Scott walked by in a full uniform, signifying he is back to full health.

Dewey returning? Golden continues to squash rumors about Preston Dewey’s departure. The redshirt freshman quarterback, who appears to be fifth on UM’s depth chart behind starter Stephen Morris, backup Ryan Williams and young standouts Gray Crow and Kevin Olsen, has not yet reported for practice. That has led to the feeling that Dewey, who reportedly has a back injury, is looking for another place to play. Golden said last week Dewey would return eventually, and repeated that Thursday. “He’ll be with us shortly,” he said. “We’re respecting his time and privacy.”

Scrimmage looms: Miami’s second and final scrimmage of camp is Friday. Plenty of jobs are on the line. The scrimmage will be as close to a game simulation as possible.

“It’s time to cut the cord with some of these guys,” he said.

Leading in, Golden wants to see better tackling and a higher completion percentage, expressing his disappointment with not seeing an experienced offense finish more plays.

“We got to get the tackling squared away fast because that will rear its head in the opener [against FAU],” he said. “You don’t want to be a day late on that. A bad tackling performance in an opener can destroy you.

“There’s no excuse for the completion percentage to be the way it is. With the experience that we have, with the protection that we’re getting, and the type of quarterback we have leading us, there’s no excuse for that.

Quote of the day comes from Duke Johnson, who raised a high eyebrow worthy of ex-UM defensive tackle Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson when asked which linebacker has the best shot of chasing him down.

“Chase … me … down?” Johnson said.

For what it’s worth, Johnson said Denzel Perryman is the team’s best pursuit linebacker. “He’ll get there and make the tackle nine times out of 10,” Johnson said.

"I'm not sure if OGV was. Almost after every Saturday game, although I played d2 there was a party for the football players where a decent amount of guys got intoxicated. The guys that didn't where there to pick up girls.

We all appreciated Morris being a coach last year when he was hurt. He grew from that. The bottome line though is he is getting a lot of press this preseason and he is blowing up even more on campus and in Miami in general. We all know the women in Miami can be the hottest and most scandalous in the world."

Most to all college players party and chase girls. That I don't care about. I was fortunate enough to marry a hot chick, so go for it.

As long as 1. they don't get caught doing something stupid and 2. it doesn't distract, I'm good. Don't be a putz like Manziel, Urban Meyer's players, or the Gators who in truth embody the tired connotations of UM.

LB

Just a reminder: starting college quarterbacks have the microscope on them. They're the CEO. They are the face and thus held to higher standards.

"Something I would like to add about Miami’s recruitment of Cook is the connection between ‘Canes running backs coach Hurlie Brown and Roland Smith. Brown and Smith played in the same defensive backfield at Miami and I’m told the two still have a very good relationship to this day. Having Smith on Miami’s side with Cook definitely can’t hurt."

Dude, give it a REST!

Cook is a Gator...the ONLY way that changes is IF we beat da Gatah badly and the NCAA let's us walk away clean in the next month.

Until BOTH of those things happen do NOT even mention him again. Moving ON now...

Cities are willing to pay millions of dollars to save or move a house that is deemed historic just for the fact that it is old so about 15 people a year can walk through it. But they wouldn't want to save a stadium that is just as old where countless historical events have happened and about 800,000 people a year walk through it. It all makes sense to me how about you?

Not to worry the OB will return in 25 years. The same moronic city goverement that ruined the OB doeesnt even realize they are planning to start rebuilidng it now. When they move the Florida Marlins to the OB site. They will effectively seal the fate of the Marlins. No one from North Broward or Palm Beach will come to the games. It is to far of a drive. No one wants to tail gate in a parking garage. I have a feeling alot of people not living in Miami may feel alienated (however spelled) when they cahnge the name from Florida Marlins to Miami Marlins. With all of this said and alot of other reasons of why it is a bad idea to move the Marlins to the OB site, I believe the Marlins will move cities due to financial reasons with in 5-10 years of their move to the OB site. And the City of Miami will be left with a brand new unoccupied stadium with no team to play host too. So the city will stop putting money into it. 15-20 years later when the Hurricanes contract is up with Dolphin stadium. The Canes put up the money combined with some assanign (however spelled) deal by the city to fund half of it to convert the stadium to a football stadium. So in the end (25 years from now) the Canes will be back at th OB site playing in a run down stadium that the city didnt keep up. It will all come full circle.

Yeah, and 1 of em' left the team (Reid), got kicked off (Ray-Ray), and haven't played that much (Wheeler).

Although I think Wheeler still has a shot at Guard this year.

CoCane

I don't remember posting that. Not even a little bit. LMAO

I do remember really wanting us to get Smith, Debose, Telfort, Ray Ray, Charles, Reid & Wheeler. So that's definitely me.

UpNorth, yeah we whiffed like mutha fukka on most of them. Lol

CoCane

CaneRock,

The only ones that balled in college are the ones we DIDN'T get. Lol

CaneRock

Wasn't McCaskill the one that got burned by Debose in the State C'ship...

I seem to recall that there was a lil' buzz around Him, and then the Debose thing happened, and the buzz cooled down.

Sad if it happened that way, I liked Him as a Safety.

Looking back on those old articles are priceless. We are locked into Sun Life until the 2033 season and honestly I dont see us leaving. Man its 2 weeks till Gameday so amped up. Go Canes!

UpNorthCane27

For real Coke we def did whiff on those boys... i still feel bad for Frankie Telfort had to give up football because of a heart condition, but that boy can run and hit like a mutha***.. I really liked Bostic too thought he was a good player and if last night's hit he put on a dude from the chargers means anything he wouldve been a beast for us instead of the gaytors.

The National Park Service says a grizzly bear charged a group of hikers in Yellowstone National Park, leaving two people injured, including one person who suffered bite and claw wounds.

---Tito Benach spoke with Alin Edouard at the event and Edouard told Tito that he hasn’t been able to get in contact with the Miami coaches at all recently. Edouard told "Tito that he planned to meet with the coaches after Sunday’s scrimmage. The Miami QB commit told Tito on Monday that he did not end up meeting with the coaches on Sunday, so that issue is still in the air. There is also talk that Louisville pulled Edouard’s offer so it’s going to be interesting to see how things develop with him and Miami. It is still unlikely he winds in the class."

Muy interesante:

What about college football? With its 12 game season and 119 teams each home game is – generally – an event. Yet the average college football game between 2008 and 2011 only saw 80% attendance. Meanwhile, in 2010, 13-1 Nevada played in front of home crowds filled to 65% of capacity and 5-7 Texas sold out every game. What, then, drives college football attendance?

At the request of Winthrop Intelligence and with the help of Ed Gunther at The National Championship Issue I parsed through three years worth of attendance data to find out. Here are some of my findings, as well as some suggestions on how schools can improve ticket sales:

READ MORE HERE:

AQM didn't literally smack Morris. He sacked him even tho he was wearing the no contact jersey for QBs.

I personally love it. Now, had Morris gotten hurt, I wouldn't love it so much, but do love the competitive side from him. Need more guys like that on D

Soup,

So according to the Harvard study, Miami should become a public school, have a lot more students and win more and we'll be ok on attendance. Hope that wasn't from a n expensive grant.

Terrance Sullivan

Soup that was an interesting and overall good article from that Harvard Study U posted. I still say there is no reason why the Canes should average less than 60,000 fans a game I get that its in a 16th largest TV market Miami/Fort Lauderdale and if U want to combine it with the West Palm Beach/Port St Lucie TV Market which is 38th then I havent mentioned the Fort Meyers TV Market which i think is like 75th. There is like 7.5 million people within 2 hours of Sun Life Stadium I am sure our Canes with their championship history and pedigree deserves at least 60,000 fans per game. IJS. Go canes and i didnt mention the thousands of people who live more than 2 hours from Sun Life that drive to see our Canes play.

j.w.

Soup, DBC got attacked again? Poor guy.

Old Skool

Shocking ...

Orlando Sentinel columnist Beth Kassab, recently published excerpts of a message sent by the university’s athletic director to former Gator season ticketholders. The note pointed out there are “more affordable tickets” lately, and pleaded with them to come out for at least a home game or two—ideally for matchups against lesser opponents like Toledo and Georgia Southern, which have been selling particularly poorly.
