After an impressive 4,400 fans showed up for CanesFest on Saturday at the BankUnited Center on campus in Coral Gables, the University of Miami football team went back to work on Sunday.
#CANESCAMP NOTES
- 12 days until Miami opens 2013 season Aug. 30 vs. FAU at 8 p.m. on ESPNU.
- Sunday was the Hurricanes’ fourth two-a-days session of #CanesCamp.
- Both practices were held on the UM intramural fields, while the grounds crew worked on the
Greentree Practice Fields. - Players wore full pads for Sunday’s two-hour morning session and tops with shoulder pads
during the 90-minute afternoon practice. - Junior DL David Perry and freshman OL Alex Gall wore yellow (non-contact) jerseys for Sunday’s practices.
- During the morning session, senior QB Stephen Morris threw three TD passes to freshman WR Stacy Coley. On the third TD, freshman LB Alex Figueroa tipped Morris’ pass, but Coley caught the deflection in stride for the score.
- Morris also connected with junior WR Phillip Dorsett for a TD on a long play over the top.
- Figueroa and senior DE David Gilbert both registered non-contact sacks.
QUOTABLES
Senior DE David Gilbert on coming home to South Florida…
“Coming back home, being around my family and having a support system, is priceless. It’s something I didn’t really get at Wisconsin and I wasn’t able to appreciate having my parents right there.”
Senior DT Justin Renfrow on how he ended up at UM…
“I graduated from UVA and needed a new situation and a new change. Coach Golden had recruited me along with Coach (D’Onofrio) out of high school because I’m originally from Philly. They recruited me to Temple and it just so happened they still needed D-Linemen here and I ended up coming here.
It’s been a great situation and a great opportunity.”
Mark D’Onofrio on offseason recruiting…
"We didn't stop from signing day until a week ago. We didn't stop continuing to try to upgrade our team if we could. And that's our job and (the players) understand that."
D’Onofrio on defensive competition…
"There are a ton of battles. There aren't many positions that are locked up. There are always going to battles. When you get in the position where guys think they have a spot, that's when you're not a very good team. When they get comfortable and say, 'OK, this is my spot,' then we've got problems. When you have competition every day and they have to fight for their position, you've got a chance to improve."
"LB, remember when Shannon said He recruits 2-3 years out...I think that's universal thinking amongst CFB coaches. I remember when we had to put a kicker (Brian Monroe) at WR, that $hit was EMBARASSING! Don't want to get caught out there like THAT! again. LMAO!"
I remember vividly. But WR is a position of strength and I think Carroll is an upgrade (considering the dropped passes prevented Morris for a 65%+ season).
Defensive tackles and linebackers, please.

I think Golden might be expecting Hurns, Dorsett, and Scott to go pro next year?

Yeah he did say 4-8. LOL even I knew we were better than that, defense be damned

Soup - I have no plans at the moment to go to any games

"I think Golden might be expecting Hurns, Dorsett, and Scott to go pro next year?"
I doubt that. Dorsett and Scott definitely need a senior year. The only person who could turn pro early is Perryman.
Posted by: LB | August 19, 2013 at 12:48 PM
LB,
Both could go next year if they want to. Perryman is definitely not the only one
Posted by: WWIN | August 19, 2013 at 12:52 PM
CGNC,
What's up did you get my post about LOF?
Posted by: WWIN | August 19, 2013 at 12:53 PM
Chad Thomas jumped 169 spots on Rivals to #52 overall. They'll keep moving all year.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 19, 2013 at 12:56 PM
LB, I don't know that they "need" another year, but I think they should use it. They don't have "mileage" concerns like LM6. Perryman too. He should use all 4 years to develop.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 19, 2013 at 12:58 PM
Terrence he also wanted a lifetime extension for a .500 season, I think the '11 extension announced during the loss to BC may have screwed up his AD perspective just slightly.

Monday Canes Camp Update: Gus Edwards, depth chart, no red (other than QBs) or yellow jerseys
"I’m concerned about our depth at wideout,'' he continued. "We’re not deep in terms of our scholarship numbers. If we get nicked up like we have been in the last couple days, I’m worried there.''

### Golden interacts effectively with recruits’ parents. Miami Northwestern three-star cornerback Ryan Mayes said: “My mom and grandmother were very happy, and that was a big deal, because it is hard to satisfy women, especially those two. They liked the fact coach Golden is respectful and well mannered.”
Well, I only wish I had as much wisdom at an early age : )
AG definitely luring mature, level-headed kids. As the saying goes, "Birds of a feather flock together"...

UMike, I usually like to carpool if possible just because it makes everything a little easier to round up there and back, FSU was a bit of a cluster-YKW last year and I imagine week two is going to be that again with a cherry on top.

I didn't mean to be short. If DP can come out being the in my top 10 i'm happy. here are my top LB's:
1. Ray Lewis
2. Ted Hendricks (before my time, but a HOFer)
3. Jonathan Vilma
4. Michael Barrow
5. Rohan Marley
6. Dan Morgan
7. Jon Beason
8. DJ Williams
9. Sean Spence
10. Darrin Smith

Is that the order? Cuz Dan Morgan is ahead of Rastafari, IMO.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 19, 2013 at 03:56 PM
yep. my order. If Marley was 6'2" 230, he would have been outlawed from the game. LOL!! He's ahead in my opinion on heart.

Just wondering if there is any traction on specific color for Sept. 7th....Terds are Blue and Orange....Should we fill Sun Life with GREEN or WHITE? Getting ready to order some new stuff and want to makes sure I have all bases covered.
Posted by: LA3 | August 19, 2013 at 04:04 PM
LA3, I'd guess that if there was any dominant color, it'd be white, since it's a home game.
May want ask a seasoned game-attending veteran that question tho.

Hendricks is the player to ever wear the Cane uniform. 3 time All American and still the record holder for tackles by a Cane DL.
Lewis never fulfilled his potential at Miami. he came into hisownin the pros.
Hendricks, as well, won 4 Super Bowls, named to NFL 75 th Annivesary NFL All Time Team.
Mad Stork is hard to argue against.

I was telling SOUP (as you may have read) that me and my brother can give you guys a ride to the game, BUT, wont be able to give you a ride back. SOUP did say Kenny might be able to. If you work it out with them just let me know. We plan on meeting at the hotel around 5:45 - 6:00 and if you still need a ride there we got you.

Yahoo's Top 25 Most Intriguing Non-QB's for this season generated ONE Cane, and no, it's somehow not Duke Johnson. LOL
21. Seantrel Henderson, Miami OT. Remember him? He was the No. 1 recruit in the nation in 2010 and ticketed for USC. When probation blew up the Trojans, Henderson called an audible and enrolled at Miami instead. The on-field play hasn't lived up to the pre-college hype, which is why Henderson is back for a senior year most never expected to see. But at 6-foot-8 and 336 pounds, the size and athletic talent is there, and if the mind is willing, he may have the kind of dominant season long expected of him.

Undeated-14-0!
Means the LOF will have to be D-Line!
That is key to entire season and defense improving! AQM, Famalu, Gilbert, & Renfrow need 10-15 plays a game to make ONE impact play each! The new bunch will have to give us 3 or 4 IMPACT plays a game. TO, Sacks, Pass Deflections, etc.
AND they will have to provide speed rush and depth in the 4th Qtr. Our D-line was pushed around and got no pressure in the 3rd or 4th qtrs...Then Dman started calling blitz...showing blitz early. And we got burnt a lot.
IF the D-line plays like MEN entire game, THEN we have chance to win every game. Because D-line can save short comings w LB's and DB's. If other team can't run it and has not time to throw it, then Duke & Company should put enough points on the board! Even if we are not ahead in the 4th...Duke and Morris can put points up QUICK!
LOF - DEF LINE!!!!!

Dyron Dye will no longer be part of Miami football team. Story upcoming.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | August 19, 2013 at 04:28 PM
I personally never got to see Hendricks at The U, but imho Sean Taylor was the greatest to ever wear the "U". He would have become the best play making Safety of all time in the NFL, even passing Reed imo
Posted by: UMike | August 19, 2013 at 04:29 PM
Umike preach brotha!!! SeanT#26 best ever!!!
Posted by: UpNorthCane27 | August 19, 2013 at 04:35 PM
Most tackles is held by Dan Morgan.
BUT, most solo tackles in a career is held my Ted Hendricks. Pretty good since he was playing end.
Hendricks had points deducted because there wasn't a U on the side of his helmet. LOL!
Posted by: trianglecane | August 19, 2013 at 04:36 PM
Per Reynolds, Dye is no longer a Cane. Anyone else thinking this means we are getting a ruling on both issues now? Sucks for Dye. He was never the next great TE that some predicted but I appreciated his effort.

I know you are talking LB's....And UMike has valid point about Sean Taylor.
But the U has some GREAT ones.....and I don't know how you judge them or rank them.
IMPACT PLAYERS OR GAME CHANGERS!??
Sean Taylor beat FSU! Coach B even said so!
Mike Irvin beat Neon Sanders TWICE (I think)for TD's win a game.
There are lots of GREAT's!
