#CANESCAMP NOTES
- #100Days Countdown to Kickoff: Just 20 days until Miami plays Aug. 30 vs. FAU at 8 p.m. on ESPNU.
- The Canes participated in hat/jog walk-thru for Saturday’s practice, wearing shells with no pads.
- DL David Perry, DB Deon Bush and RB Brandon Yosha were in red non-contact jerseys Saturday.
- Former Canes safety JoJo Nicolas was in attendance.
- Miami will hold the first of two Fall scrimmages Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at Greentree Practice Fields.
- Junior DL Ufomba Kamalu (Butler CC), graduate DE David Gilbert (Wisconsin) and graduate DT Justin Renfrow (Virginia) participated in their first #CanesCamp practice Saturday.
Art Kehoe on Sunny Odogwu…
“You just have to be around Sunny to see what he's like. He's very intense and very outgoing and loveable, but when he wants to compete he's a really competitive guy. I think once he starts understanding all the aspects of what we're doing out here I think he's going to be a dangerous guy because he's so big and talented... Some kids you have to get them to the water to drink. He wants to be good, he wants to be a good player so he's going to be good faster than he probably should be.”
Al Golden on the schedule…
“It's very compact right now. Six days left to establish whether or not you're coming out of the smoke. It's a big deal.”
Golden on who might step up in Sunday’s scrimmage…
“I don't know. It's always different. Everything happens fast. There's no one coaching you before the play or after the play. Coaches are on the sideline. We're going to find out who can manage it and who can excel in those types of situations.”
Golden on the defense…
“It's not even the same group. You can't even compare it to
last year. The biggest challenge for our defense and for our defensive staff is
to let last year go... It's not even the same group in terms of maturity, size,
experience, strength, poise, or communication.”
Denzel Perryman on his weight…
“I put on, like, 10 pounds and I’m still running the same numbers…I feel like a wrecking ball."
All of us at Canespace say: "Wreck them Denzel, just WRECK them." If you get the chance to wreck certain people then do it like this: UF, FSU and UVA!

Dyron Dye is on the injured reserve list and has not been cleared yet by the NCAA.
Posted by: Montreal-Cane | August 10, 2013 at 11:16 PM
Monty...Dye had the torn achilles and is out for a while, correct? NCAA will also decide soon enough I guess?

I wonder how Arthur would have fared had he stayed at Miami under Shannon.
Posted by: TonyCane | August 10, 2013 at 10:27 PM
AB would've been a career special teamer under Shannon. AB and Spencer Adkins had to have been the two most COACH wasted talents to come through Miami.

Correct in both cases!
I know the COI of the NCAA had meetings last week and on monday all the members will be back to their homes and headquarters according to the emails i have received friday...So it's only logical that a final decision has been made on the Miami case.
Now it's a matter of public relations and when it will be the best time for the NCAA to release the information.
Once again i expected the decision yesterday and i wouldn't be surprised that the NCAA decided to wait a few more days because of the Johnny Maziel situation and also with the news the NCAA will "exit" the business of selling player and school related memorabilia and apparel...
The guys in Indianapolis know they are on very thin ice and they move very slowly.
Just speculation on my part based on very little informations...So is this week the week??? Only god knows.

I remember when we had that "vaunted" 08 class and Spence, Cookie, Futch and #2 LB Arthur Brown Jr came in and AB in that spring game was playing lights out... come gameday you saw #11 running down field..on special team. Remember that Vtech game ? When he (ab) made a bonehead play and Shannon gave him that stare of death ? That was alll I remember of him. When he transferred I called it. Dad told him to come home ? 2 time all American at kstate big 12 dpoy .... eff shannon . Loved what he was coaching until 04 on d

Among the top rated running backs in the class of 2014, Plantation American Heritage's Sony Michel (rivals.com's No. 2 running back prospect) told us Saturday that UM is still trying to recruit him through social media, but he's firmly committed to Georgia.
Miami Central's Joseph Yearby (No. 7 running back) said he's now sure he will attend UM.
And Central's Dalvon Cook (No. 6) said he is firmly committed to UF, though UM would love to get him to switch. Cook was wearing a UF cap at the first annual high school media day Saturday at Sun Life Stadium.

Sony Michel is the one i would like UM to get.
Miami will just have to win this season and many recruits will switch to UM...Win big Canes!!!
Yearby seems so much smaller than Duke...lol...And he is not solid on UM.
I just hate it when South Florida kids with a lot of talent and good grades don't sign with UM the no.1 University in the state...It makes no sense...

"I just hate it when South Florida kids with a lot of talent and good grades don't sign with UM the no.1 University in the state...It makes no sense..."
I can think of a few dozen reasons, none of which have anything to do with grades or stars.

The SEC is like the modern age blue chips nowadays. U want that duffle bag of cash? You're dad need that new farm equipment? Moms need a new job? But NCAA wants to play King of the people, without any form of consistency, fairness, and full of corruption. I.E. Rebellion, Riots, Revolution.

There IT is right there.
Posted by: SOUP | August 11, 2013 at 10:30 AM
There is ONE reason why beating UF is important. IF we beat them on the field then we have a better chance to take their recruits.
Although some will never come because they don't wanna go to class or graduate, or work out or practice hard, or want cash or girls given to them, or wanna smoke pot and not be held accountable.
Those players, U know the ones that play the recruiting game that is so played out, say things like "I still like schools like Miami and Florida that are close to home" or those that wear their Gator hats sideways and look like thugs, yeah those guys.

BARRY JACKSON, MIAMI HERALD:
It will be fascinating to watch Corn Elder and eventually, Derrick Griffin (if he qualifies) try to juggle football and basketball --- something rare in modern UM history.
Jimmy Graham was the only recent Cane to make an imprint in both of those sports but played one season of football only after he was done with basketball.
Elder will play football this fall, then shift to basketball –- possibly in mid-November if he redshirts, Al Golden said. Elder said Friday he won’t pick up a basketball until he’s done with football this season and “hopefully if I can make difference in football, I won’t redshirt.”
Because of positional need, Elder is playing cornerback for the first time –- it's “pretty hard; I’m starting to get it down” -- and also is working as a returner. He ran for 6351 yards (a Tennessee record) and scored 84 touchdowns in high school, averaged 20 points as a senior in basketball and won a combined five state championships.
"If anyone can do both sports, it's him," said Ricky Bowers, his football and basketball coach at Ensworth High in Nashville. "That's because of his skill level, speed, and competitive spirit.”
Elder, 5-10, conceded Friday “it’s going to be pretty challenging.”
So why do it? “I love both of them. I grew up playing both. Coach Golden was fine with it.”
Elder is close friends with a player who did exactly what he’s doing –- playing cornerback and point guard in college: former Vanderbilt athlete Jamie Graham. “He said it’s really hard but he thinks I can do it,” Elder said.
As a football player, Elder "has excellent speed, lateral quickness, change of direction,” said Golden, who said he might be a slot receiver eventually.
And as a basketball player? At this year’s Final Four, “two guys from the state of Tennessee came up to me,” coach Jim Larranaga said, “and they asked me: Do you know how lucky you are that your football program signed Corn Elder? Because he’s the best basketball player in the state…' He has tremendous defensive skills. He knows how to run a team. Great leadership qualities.”
Elder could end up sharing point guard this season with guard/forward Garrius Adams and Belgian freshman Emmanuel LeComte.

I love the idea of the coaches allowing him to do both but as somebody who played college football I feel like eventually he will have to choose. The time constraints for both are so intense and I think coach L will keep brining in top tier talent this is around ball all year that will force Elder if he wants PT their to make a decision.
Saw how quickly Thompson played both. Don't believe it for a second if you don't think Morris started being in his ear early telling him baseball is where it's at and he needed to focus on that you're crazy.

From #Sutrel at the Miami Herald:
Al Golden had just finished praising the young man he considered the “most impressive” Miami Hurricane after two days of fall camp, when someone suggested that the 6-5, 220-pound Cincinnati transfer looked like a beast.
“He does,” Golden said in agreement. “He looks like a SAM linebacker.”
Patrick O’Donnell did play some linebacker at Palm Beach Central High. Tight end, too.
But what the Hurricanes really needed for this season is what O’Donnell — deemed one of the Top 10 “workout-warrior freaks” in college football by ESPN in 2011 — now proudly calls himself.
A punter.
O’Donnell, 22, grew up playing soccer and loving the Canes with his mother, father and younger sister. He watched them on TV. He listened to them on the radio. But he was not recruited by Miami as a scholarship player, despite being a first-team All-State kicker and co-winner of the 2008 Lou Groza Award as the top kicker in Palm Beach County.

Agree 100%... Moss and Gore were both WAY overweight while here together. I remember traveling up to the UNC game one year, when they both lumbered onto the field for warmups... I thought we had two new bloated lineman! (We got upset that game too, BTW.)

No such worries this year.
Injuries, turnovers, and D'No are my ONLY worries about this season.
AG has everything else under control! There's a major storm about to hit the college football world... Let's Go Canes!

Roachcane, I recall Coker said angrily at a meeting after the 2005 season, "No more fat running backs!" As if this had happened mysteriously and not under his watch in the previous years!

Ya'll damn sure right, the conditioning was HORRIBLE! under Coker. Another guy that got fat, was Ryan Moore. I used to think He was running around out there with a flap-jacket LMAO!
But is it just me, or did it seem like it was just the offensive guys that were out of shape...

Tyrone Moss was a lazy person and player. He did not run hard, he did not care....but you know he was right in the thick of Shapiro as he wanted all the glory of being a UM player...in short he was a lazy slug stupid piece of shit. He did not want to win at any cost. Hope he is one who gets banned; he has no right to be around this program.
All I can say is thank God that RS the Onion is gone....he should never have been considered for the HC......nor LC Clappy....whoever entertained either....and despite my love for the 2001 team damn their AZZ for backing Coker, hell they didn't have a clue.....the Clappy-Onion years were the worst ever....those 2 put us miles behind...good guys good as coordinators.....horrible choices for HC....they could not HC a sandlot flag team....do not understand or are willing to understand what MAKES PLAYERS TICK...jmo

Good stuff...Ryan Williams looks like He's throwing a better ball this year, more velocity. Kevin Olsen threw a TD to Malcolm Williams, He throws a pretty good ball to.

4 Real,
though I was not a HC Onion fan at all, and I did not like a lot of his program ideas, I will have to agree with you that we are still on the same wave length as we were with Clappy and Onion...nothing has been accomplished yet and without some real luck last year that was spectacular, it might have been worse. I am looking for a breakout year this season....I am not a 12-0 guy, but I think this year we should be able to see where we are headed.....I may be wrong..JMO
