The Jimmy Johnson coaching era began in 1984 with the 10th ranked Miami Hurricanes 20-18 victory over the top ranked Auburn Tigers and eventual Heisman Trophy winning running back Bo Jackson in the 2nd Kickoff Classic held at the Meadowlands in New Jersey.
The match up featured the defending National Champion Hurricanes and the Tigers who were passed up the previous season as champions when the 5th ranked Canes leapfrogged the 3rd ranked Tigers for the 1983 championship with their 31-30 victory over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl.
UM Sports Hall of Fame (UMSHoF) member and game MVP Bernie Kosar passed for 329 yards on 21 of 38 passing and two touchdowns. UMSHoF member Alonzo Highsmith had 140 yards on 21 carries and UMSHoF member Eddie Brown had 8 catches for 157 yards.
TE Willie Smith added 4 catches for 70 yards, Stanley Shakespeare caught Kosar's two touchdown passes and place kicker Greg Cox nailed two 4th quarter field goals for the margin of victory.
Coach Jimmy Johnson will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame tomorrow night, August 28, 2013 in a ceremony at the Omni Hotel in Atlanta.
The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit, 501c3 corporation whose sole purpose is to recognize those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have excelled at their sports and brought acclaim to the university through their accomplishments. and as soon as i say that...Unc scores lol
Posted by: sass80 | August 29, 2013 at 06:59 PM
They certainly didn't show up for the opening gun, but still plenty of time to get back into it for UNC. Fedora can put up points in a hurry too.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | August 29, 2013 at 07:07 PM
It's not easy to put up quick points against SC's defense...
Posted by: CoCane | August 29, 2013 at 07:29 PM
No, no it's not Coke. Unless Fedora makes some astute adjustments here in the second half he's going to have trouble making up this two score deficit. I figure he's going to go hurry up to try and extend the game but they can't turn the ball over and you figure more passing attempts means more chances for Clowney to lower the boom on Renner.
Spurrier is going to draw them into creeping up the safeties and then go over the top in a repeat of the first drive at some point in the second half so UNC will have to get the ball back with a TO or two of their own to make up for that inevitability.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | August 29, 2013 at 07:38 PM
Or he'll just wait until the Heels drop a TD pass in the end-zone to settle for three then have the safety take the wrong angle to house it from 3/4ths of the way from the end-zone, and now UNC is behind the eight ball.
That works for this decade's Spurrier too.

BigWindy,
If we're as good as we hope, we will crush them but... Let's wait & see how we look against the gayturds before we talk about crushing anybody.

Looked at the FAU roster and they are obviously a lot smaller than us at every position that matters. We need to really push them around.
Posted by: Clwtrdan | August 29, 2013 at 10:57 PM
I think UM should win against UNC but they have not played well there recently, last time notwithstanding. Road team in that series has had a tough go of it, but of course, last two games has won.
Yeah, the DT who's listed at 6-2 225 made me LOL too on FAU.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | August 29, 2013 at 11:35 PM
I hope for that 225 pound kids sake he doesn't play. Linder will tee off on him. S. Carolina looks good. Ole Miss certainly cleaned up in recruiting. USC, not sure what to make of them so far. They look like pre Pete Carroll USC.
