The Jimmy Johnson coaching era began in 1984 with the 10th ranked Miami Hurricanes 20-18 victory over the top ranked Auburn Tigers and eventual Heisman Trophy winning running back Bo Jackson in the 2nd Kickoff Classic held at the Meadowlands in New Jersey.
The match up featured the defending National Champion Hurricanes and the Tigers who were passed up the previous season as champions when the 5th ranked Canes leapfrogged the 3rd ranked Tigers for the 1983 championship with their 31-30 victory over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl.
UM Sports Hall of Fame (UMSHoF) member and game MVP Bernie Kosar passed for 329 yards on 21 of 38 passing and two touchdowns. UMSHoF member Alonzo Highsmith had 140 yards on 21 carries and UMSHoF member Eddie Brown had 8 catches for 157 yards.
TE Willie Smith added 4 catches for 70 yards, Stanley Shakespeare caught Kosar's two touchdown passes and place kicker Greg Cox nailed two 4th quarter field goals for the margin of victory.
Coach Jimmy Johnson will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame tomorrow night, August 28, 2013 in a ceremony at the Omni Hotel in Atlanta.
The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit, 501c3 corporation whose sole purpose is to recognize those student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have excelled at their sports and brought acclaim to the university through their accomplishments. Manziel suspended for one half is a joke. Either suspend him or don't.
However, this has nothing to do with UM case. Manziel was one incident with one player. Big difference between that and the scope of the UM investigation.
Posted by: Gin & Tonic | August 29, 2013 at 10:06 AM
G&T, I agree the scope is much larger and more involved, but one issue I have is how the NCAA repeatedly interviewed the same people trying to dig up "evidence" in the UM case, but simply used the evidence Manziel provided to determine his fate. If this was Morris they would have interviewed the brokers who made the claims, repeatedly, they would of interviewed the ESPN reporter who said he saw the video and heard Manziel's remarks etc etc etc. But all they did was talk to Manziel and then close the case.

Pete Ariz:
Thought this would be an interesting look at the roster.
**Using Rivals.com’s star system, here is the breakdown of Miami’s two-deep depth chart for the FAU game:
Offense
5-stars: 2 (Seantrel Henderson, Duke Johnson)
4-stars: 5 (Stacy Coley, Ereck Flowers, Brandon Linder, Shane McDermott, Eduardo Clements)
3-stars: 10 (Allen Hurns, Herb Waters, Malcolm Bunche, Jon Feliciano, Jared Wheeler, Clive Walford, Maurice Hagens, Stephen Morris, Dallas Crawford, Phillip Dorsett)
2-stars: 3 (Asante Cleveland, Walter Tucker, Ryan Williams)
Defense
5-stars: 1 (Tracy Howard)
4-stars: 5 (Anthony Chickillo, Kacy Rodgers, Luther Robinson, David Gilbert, Raphael Kirby)
3-stars: 10 (Antonio Crawford, Curtis Porter, Justin Renfrow, Alonzo Highsmith, Jr., Olsen Pierre, Denzel Perryman, Tyrone Cornileus, Ladarius Gunter, Nate Dortch)
2-stars: 2 (Ufomba Kamalu, Jimmy Gaines)
NR: 3 (Alex Figueroa, Thurston Armbrister, Nantambu Akil-Fentress)
**When healthy, Deon Bush is expected to return to the two-deep. He was a 4-star recruit.

Brokers didn't want to talk to the NCAA.
That's the difference. UM has a jailhouse snack that can't get any attention except by talking, so he talks. Brokers have a real business not a ponzi scheme, so they have better things to do than interview repeatedly from a prison cell with the amateur athletic traffic cops.
All this hand wringing by Miami fans is misdirected. Special K is where you should be dumping dirt on the grave of, not the NCAA, they'd be remiss not to interview those willing to talk. Plus, it ignores the fact that a bunch of barely average football teams got caught with their hands in the cookie jar, all the 'greats' at UM who are implicated were freshman on the last championship team, after that, a bunch of entitled believers of their own hype that never lived up to it. Like solar said YEARS ago now, you get caught speeding, you get mad about it, you go to court and you pay the fine anyway, he was 100% right.

Good point OGV. I don't think it is particularly UM....my contention is that the NCAA has outlived its usefulness, and there has to be a modern approach to recruiting, money etc. I am not saying no rules, but progressive ideas. Not way left or right, but somewhere that is sensible for all.
The haves will always have, and some have nots may become semi haves (TCU, Boise, Utah etc) but face it those people do not have big time programs and never will. It is not about level playing field, it is about competition. There needs to be a top tier super conference with the big players....the rest stay in the other 3 divisions. You play only the best teams non of the lower teams...I hate playing FAUs of the world...they suck. Play all top tier opponents...I like the idea of VT-Bama, NC-SC, we should be playing UF not this rinky dink sandlot team this week. Get rid of FAU, SF and Savannah; play Ohio State, UCLA and ND in their place. That makes this so so schedule a mans schedule not 3 patsies to go along with some competition.
Posted by: VA Cane | August 29, 2013 at 11:04 AM
OGV, you have a point..BUT, even the former players that didn't want to talk they tried repeatedly to talk to. They put pressure on UM and UM even told players if they don't talk they aren't allowed back...where was all that pressure and bullying with Fairyball? That is my particular beef. To me it just seems the NCAA didn't TRY to find anything n Manziel but tried VERY hard to find everything and anything on Miami, even going as far as to say something was corroborated if the rat said it twice.
Posted by: UMike | August 29, 2013 at 11:08 AM
For once I agree with ogv. The brokers aren't speaking to the NCAA so what does Manziels attorneys do? They strike a deal for half a game and case closed. Even if the brokers do talk to the ncaa, im sure his attorneys made sure there would be no further punishment in case the brokers were sandbagging. He's gonna eventually burn a&m in one way or another anyway.
Posted by: Ftmcane | August 29, 2013 at 11:11 AM
In my world, I lobby for playing the best teams. I am playing Clover Hill and Beattie Weaver as 2 of my 8 reg season games....they were conference champs of the 2 divisions north of the river. I want to play the best and beat the best....therefore it makes me the best. I hate playing teams that are not so good; we use real vanilla stuff against them so we do not run up the score. I also set up 4 scrimmages before the season starts against the best 4 teams; makes me better.
I am very disappointed playing the shitty teams on our schedule; I want a big conference of the best 50 or so and you play only the best teams. I want to play Bama, OSU, Oregon, LSU, UF, FSU, Michigan, Ok, Nebraska, USC etc we might lose all those games but then we may win the m all....hell 12-0 and a playoff title would really solve this mythical NC talk....we have 5 titles....but they are all mythical just like everybody elses. Playoff system of top teams in top tier puts this mythical stuff to rest.....and they are just that myths when you start to think about it.
I am old school....when we won 2 straight HS titles, we played a good reg season and tough playoffs... blew out good teams 38 straight...on our way to 2 state titles. I want to always beat the best...its my way of proving you are the best!!!! JMO

Now, that they got Johnny football cleared, maybe now they will once again worry about us and you better believe it will probably be before the Flo. game just to mess with our minds. The Herb can't stand the NCAA henchmen because they are like Gnats but we have nobody to blame but ourselves for getting into this predicament and being at their mercy. It sux but it's the truth. Those bastards hate us as it is and slow bleeding us is a way to get back at us.
Posted by: herbieibis | August 29, 2013 at 11:44 AM
Some people on here need to brush upon our case.
As just ONE example, DeQuan Jones' case and Manziel's are comparable. Similar amount of money alleged, and both involved a question of eligibility. Dequan misses 11 games as the NCAA takes its sweet time. Unlike Manziel, Dequan is COMPLETELY exonerated, and was found to NOT have violated any rules, while Manziel misses 30 minutes for an admission of rules violations.
Also, some of you need to check the NCAA's bylaws. They don't need direct testimony to act. They can use statements attributed and not made directly to them, as long as they can be verified as having been made, which the broker's statements are. The brokers unwillingness to speak with the NCAA are totally irrelevant, as they had in essence testified to the ESPN reporters.
Let's not let the NCAA off the hook. They definitely have multiple standards.

In Cam Newtons case they even had proof his dad got money, but said since Cam had no knowledge of it, it was ok lol

VA C, I'm all for getting rid of the cupcakes from schedules and I agree that writing a rulebook for a digital age instead of an agrarian one would be a major improvement in the bureaucracy that runs this whole show, but I think if you go no price barred for recruits like the major land grant powers would love to see, UM can't play in that field, heck they can barely play in the over-regulated field they exist in now in a lot of ways.
UMike, I didn't personally like The Don's thumbscrew turning letter, but I understand why she would do something like that in the situation she was in at the time. Is making someone suggest you go stick your next request for an interview where the sun don't shine one more time unreasonable in a thorough investigation? Not to me, especially when you have someone of little person stature waiving bank statements and receipts in your face raving about how many rule violations he was directly responsible for. Again, get mad at the traffic cops all you want but I find it misdirected, after-all Special K sure has moved on to bigger and better things and is showing how on top of everything he is at Lubbock so there's no reason to doubt his leadership in his previous stop after the fact is there? Oh. Wait.
Fc, look out, start agreeing with me here, next thing you know, somebody who never went a day to the college I did and who will talk major sh!t about a guy who contributed some substantial hardware to the trophy case in Coral Gables at the drop of a hat, while pumping up how awesome reptile baseball with not a single title is, will accuse you of personally not liking a football coach as he and his best friend field the worst defense in UM history and you mention they aren't very good at this game-day coaching thing apparently two years before it happens to play out on the field after you state that. Too bad you're not signed in to typepad, we could go back and pull up your Nostradamus impersonation posts from around the Sun Bowl if you were. I agree that Manziel can't survive on innate spidey-sense in the pocket much longer since he now is a target for the rest of his playing days. Who wants to be the guy who ended a Heisman's career is the question going into every game he steps on the field for now.
CR, YEAH BUT . . . no hands are supposed to be in ANY so it's tough for me to garner a lot of sympathy for those that couldn't resist.

I think you are right on the no holds barred $ OGV, that is where regulation would need to be monitored and regulated. I do not want to pay salaries, but I want these kids who need money to have it. Johnny Littleballs has $ from mommy and daddy...he is set. I think it can be done compared to the caveman rules we have now...you cannot even give a kid a shirt, cleats or a ride....lots of dumb shit!!!

UMike, that was a fantastic jiujitsu counter by junior Newton, wasn't it? "Duh, uh, I didn't know my dad shopped me around to SEC schools, so duh, uh, let me go get me some SEC title. Thnx, bye!"
The OSU Sugar Bowl deal one was way worse though in a lot of ways. So it's more top revenue earners immunity, not SEC only, although they are a top earner league.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | August 29, 2013 at 12:10 PM
OGV, that is true. They made sure to let those OSU players play in the bowl game
Posted by: UMike | August 29, 2013 at 12:15 PM
Va Cane, until the strength of schedule actually matters in determining who makes the BCS (or playoff upcoming), teams will schedule non-conference patsies, if their overriding objective is to be NC.
There is a reason UF hasn't played an out of state non-conference game in decades.
If you got really penalized in the formula for not playing real teams, the schedule would change.

To play devil's advocate, there is a difference between Manziel and Cook. Manziel was accused of selling his autograph. There was no allegation of involvement by Texas A&M coaches or staff. Cook's allegation involved a Miami coach - thus the NCAA spent more resources and time.
That said, when you look at the cases that involve alleged impropriety on a program level - not individual like Manziel - it appears that there is a definitive double standard between Miami and almost anyone else.

Criminal-What happened with Manziel.
Yes, our case is different. The OSU players, the Dez Bryant situation, and there are tons of others where a player received something for their likeness in regards to their playing status with a University and got phucked by the NCAA.
The part of our situation that is insulting is the fact that, since they didn't have a story corroborated twice by a convicted felon....And our players did not have rich hot shot parents with a tough guy legal defense; it is a slap on the wrist?
Nothing about that makes sense. If the NCAA had nothing then there was no reasonable way for them to give a half game suspension.
If Manziel did nothing, there is no reasonable explanation for accepting any suspesion.
It is an even bigger slap in the face to educated individuals and non TAMU fans. If you are going to try and phuck us at least don't tell me it is apple pie and I'm eating dessert.
