This tradition actually started when CGNC, who is without a doubt a legend herself here on Canespace, started a series of player features with the same title. Three years ago she wrote features about former UM players QB Kenny Dorsey and TE Jeremy Shockey and called them "Legends of the Fall".
In our fan selection process true "Legends of the Fall" are those players who the fans feel will have outstanding or "breakout" season for the Canes on offense and defense this year.
It's not about simply picking the Hurricanes' best players, but your personal favorites among the UM players apart from the usual suspects and most obvious stars. Some bloggers choose first or second year players who are likely to break on the scene as freshmen or sophomores.
Five years ago those players were LB Sean Spence and WR Aldarius Johnson.
Four years ago the LOFs were QB Jacory Harris and DL Allen Bailey.
Three years ago they were WR Leonard Hankerson and CB Brandon Harris.
Two years ago it was RB Lamar Miller and LB Sean Spence as the LOFs.
Last year it was RB Duke Johnson and LB Denzel Perryman.
There are your unusual selections and surprises like kicker, punter and lead body slammer Matt Bosher who just happened to be the Canes 2008 MVP. Who woulda thunk it?
Other bloggers are more traditional or conservative in their picks and select juniors or seniors who are projected to finally have that one incredible breakout season that leads them to become a high round NFL draft selection.
These picks could really be any defensive or offensive player who may be primed to explode on the scene after a solid previous season or a spectacular Summer with Swasey. Offensive and defensive linemen may not be popular or sexy picks but they are just as eligible as any other position player.
And don't forget special teams standouts too who can change a game with that one big play that shifts the entire momentum of a game. Some bold predictions even result in selections of completely unexpected dark horse candidates for this honor like Sam Shields a few years ago.
Sam "Sticky" Shields went from being buried on the depth chart at WR to CB where he shined and eventually got drafted by the Green Bay Packers.
If these long-shot picks actually play out, the blogger (like OcalaCane seen above with Shields at CaneFest in 2009) who picked them look like an absolute genius. This is the most risky, but potentially most rewarding, approach of all.
Then again if you decide to take a leap of faith on a player and they don't ball out like you might have hoped or expected then you might wind up like old time blogger Cat5 who selected LB Arthur Brown or SolarCane who selected WR Thearon Collier and then well, U know what happens then.
It's your choice. Here are the 2012 LOF rules:
- Ineligible players on offense: Stephen Morris, Duke Johnson
- Ineligible players on defense: Denzel Perryman, Anthony Chickillo
- Pick one player on offense and one player on defense.
- Pick one freshman for "Freshman Impact Player of the Year".
- Pick one assistant coach or cooordinator for "Coach of the Year".
Now make your choices and you may win Canespace prizes (shirts, coffee, mugs) and other fun stuff like tickets to a 2013 UM football, basketball or baseball game. And remember: U gotta be in it to win it!
Phillip Dorsett on Offense
Tyriq McCord on Defense

I know everybody is saying WHO? so here it is:
Billy Furman is in his third year working with the Miami Hurricanes football program and his first as the Special Teams / Walk-On coordinator. He works directly with head coach Al Golden on all special teams game plans, while working with kickers, punters and snappers daily. He is also responsbile for all University of Miami walk-ons.
Prior to his current role, Furman spent his first two years at UM as the defensive graduate assistant. He assisted Mark D'Onofrio with game plans, scouting reports, practice scout teams and quality control.
He arrived in Coral Gables after spending three years as the offensive student assistant at Temple University, where he assisted the offensive coordinator with game plans and scouting reports. He was a member of the Temple staff that led the Owls to their first bowl game in 30 years, while also claiming the 2009 MAC East Division Co-Champions crown.
His coaching career began in 2004 as Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, W.Va. He was the offensive line assistant and video coordinator for the Rams for three seasons. In 2007, he was the running backs coach at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont.
He graduated from Temple in 2011 with a degree in broadcast telecommunications and mass media. He attended Shepherd University for one year in 2003 and was a quarterback for the Rams, but he redshirted after a career-ending shoulder injury.

Somebody should pick this guy for coach(OGV?):
Former Miami defensive standout Kareem Brown is in his first season as a defensive line graduate assistant for the Hurricanes. He previously spent the 2012 season as a defensive line assistant at FIU.
During his time at FIU, Brown worked directly with defensive coordinator Todd Orlando and assisted the defensive staff in preparation for opponents. He signaled calls to the defensive line on game day and worked with FIU's defensive line coach in developing run game and pass rush schemes.
He spent five years in the NFL with three different teams. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. He spent the 2008 and 2009 seasons with the New York Jets and the 2010 and 2011 seasons with the Tennessee Titans.
Brown was played football for the Miami Hurricanes from 2002-05. In 2004, he was recognized as the team's Most Improved Defensive Player. In 2005, he earned the Defensive Lineman of the Year.
As a senior in 2005, Brown tallied 60 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and a team-best 11.0 sacks, while also posting 16 QB hurries. As a junior in 2004, he made 39 tackles, 11.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks, while recovering two fumbles. He was a starter in the 2006 Under Armour Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.
A Miami native, Brown was a four-year starter at Miami Norland Senior High School. He graduated from UM with a bachelor's degree in liberal arts in May 2006.

Chris O'Hara is in his first season as a defensive graduate assistant for the Miami Hurricanes. O'Hara spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons as a student defensive assistant for the Hurricanes.
As a UM student assistant, he assisted defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio with creating weekly scouting reports, assited with daily practice preparation and post-practice meetings for defensive backs, scout team operation and maintained and updated all quality control.
Prior to arriving in Coral Gables, O'Hara spent two seasons with Golden and D'Onofrio at Temple University in Philadelphia. In his first semester with the Owls, he was a recruiting assistant before becoming a student defensive assistant for the remainder of his freshman and sophomore years.
O'Hara earned his bachelor's degree in sport administration with a minor in business from the University of Miami in December 2012, graduating magna cum laude with a 3.87 GPA. He maintained a 3.9 GPA at Temple, studying sport and recreation management.

Kareem got his job because he went NCAA evidence SOUP, I can't reward him like the program did with a paycheck for that, although he played real well as a senior after being JAG for a long time. You still have to hit on two to win, I'm recalling correctly? The offensive ineligibles are making that choice nearly impossible for me this year, still say new coordinator who hasn't called plays should allow them to be eligible, but of course you'll get nothing but Morris/Duke picks then and one of them will get through the year without incident and win the head to head match-up for this over the other so instead it's WR roulette?

Flying in for Canes vs Terds game on Sept 7. Staying at hotel by Ft. Lauderdale airport. Don't have parking pass. What is best solution to get to game and back....rental car, taxi, or bus? Parking passes look to be $100 then add rental car fee of $100 a day. Taxi to and from can't cost $200 can it?
Or should I switch hotels? closest Marriott property looks like 6 miles away from Sunlife
Posted by: LA3 | August 17, 2013 at 12:45 PM
Are you in for only the day of the game or do you fly in for a weekend LA3?

I didn't even think of Swasey... not a bad choice for Asst. Coach.
My only problem with him is that he kind of slacked off under the previous regime... He has show he knows his stuff on many occasions, no doubt... but, it took AG to light a fire under him again.
The results this year are just incredible though!

We hear Herb Waters and Philip Dorsett were among those who were impressive in UM’s scrimmage Friday night. (There was a high-school presence at the closed scrimmage, so it’s inevitable that a few details leak.)
Waters caught two long passes, and Dorsett caught a long pass down the sideline. Freshman Stacy Coley caught two TD passes from Ryan Williams – that’s the only specific detail that UM announced about the scrimmage. UM people reiterate that Coley is too good to keep off the field this season. Coley has even taken some first team snaps.
Expect Coley, Waters, Allen Hurns, Rashawn Scott, Phillip Dorsett and Malcolm Lewis all to play this season.
Offensive coordinator James Coley said there’s certainly enough snaps to use at least six receivers because UM expects to play at a quick tempo and expects to get a lot of offensive plays.
Dorsett figures to be the primary punt returner, but UM people expect Coley could eventually be a factor there.
